Intro video happening now with games and consoles from the past being shown.

Tons of older games being shown. This is epic. Tons of lights, and video screens and epic music.

Okay we are up and running.

Talk about the PS Vita right now and unlocking the potential.

Also expanding the PS network and online gaming to tablets and smart phones.

New platform of gameplay?

Right now, it’s a lot of talk of what they want to do. Not necessarily new consoles or games as of yet.

PS4!!!!

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-2

Sony is saying the pS4 is going to not just be a box, but change the game play community.

Mark Cerny is up and talking.

I guess we are going to find out all about the PS4 today.  AWESOME!

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-3

live0346

“Nothing between you and the game”.

“We were able to create, with PlayStation 4, a platform by creators for creators.”

It’s a PC-like architecture, he says. “Supercharged.” It’s an X86 CPU with an “enhanced PC GPU” for graphics.

PS4 will have 8GB of “high-speed unified memory.” That’s a lot better than the ones we have now.

New controller.

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-4

Dual Shock 4!

It’s much more rounded, looks like a rubberized grip with “enhanced rumble capabilities”

There’s a touchpad up top in the middle, a “share” button and a headphone jack, and a “light bar” as a “simpler, more friendly way to identify players.”

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-5

There’s also a stereo camera that can track the 3D position of the controller through that light bar. Think Kinect.

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-7

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-6

It’s GDDR5 memory, by the way. “Typically reserved for high-end graphics cards.”

Mark is showing up a game he is working on for the PS4. Looks incredible.  Kinda like Pixar characters that we get to control.

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-9

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-8

And it is called ‘Knack’. Looks like a magical robot game.

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-10

liveblog-sony-playstation-4

Simple, Immediate, Social, Integrated and Personalized were the guiding forces for the system here.

“On PlayStation 4, we’ve put together a feature set… that radically reduces the lag time between consumers and their content.”

HOLY GOD!  The system will suspend when you hit the power button. To resume, just hit the power button again and BAM you’re back in the game. “At the exact spot you left off.”

There’s a a “secondary custom chip” that can download or update games in the background. “On PlayStation 4, digital titles are playable even as they are downloaded.”

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-1

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-2

The PS4 will be very socially integrated with social platforms like Twitter and facebook.  You will be able to share your video game screen shots or video live to your social platforms.

You can also live-stream your gameplay experience! Friends can even help you out by taking over the controller.

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-3

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-4

The social network will be “highly integrated.” You’ll see real photos of people, real names, and there’ll be mobile apps that let you connect from anywhere. You will be able to browse everything from your tablets, smartphones and Vita.

Finally, the system will “get to know you” — personalization will be a major feature, the system learning your likes and dislikes.  It’ll automatically download content it thinks you’ll like. “Our long-term vision is to reduce download times to zero… If we know enough about you to predict your next purchase, then that game can be loaded and ready to go before you even click that button.”

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-5

The system will be Deeply Satisfying, Developer Focused and provide “Easy Access to Content and Experiences”.

Dave Perry is coming on stage to talk.

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-6

“The gamer is at the center of the network, so every decision we make is scrutinized.”

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-7

“With GaiKai in the PlayStation Store, you’ll be able to instantly experience anything that you like.”

Facebook and Ustream will be integrated.

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-8

“As you know, spectating has become very popular in our industry… it’s our job at PlayStation to make that even better.”

With the Share button, you can broadcast from your game to all your friends instantly. In 100% real time. And your friends can watch your screen and post comments which will show up on your screen.

Not only that, you can allow them to take over your controller and help you in difficult spots in a game.

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-9

“The base hardware architecture for PlayStation network was designed to integrate social networks through all aspects”.

Now onto Remote play.  which is 2nd screen play, meaning PS Vita.

This means that if you are playing on your PS4, and you have to leave to do something, you can transfer your game instantly to your pS Vita to continue your game right where you left off.

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-10

In addition to gaming, they will have a video app system, which will have tons of movies and tv shows.

live0441

“We’ll be rolling out PlayStation’s Cloud Services in phases, so we can’t reveal all the possibilities today.”

So, no backwards compatibility, and Perry isn’t confirming it now for the PS4, just mentioning it as a possibility.

Now we’re hearing about “simple” vs. “elegant” — “The more elegant the design is, then the more simple and easy it is to get incredible depth.”

“There isn’t any more waiting time, there isn’t any startup… it’s a huge win for gamers.”

“It doesn’t involve three minutes of bootup and disc shuffling and all these things that are just a nuisance to playing a game.”

“You’re able to download the first bit of the game and start playing it before the next 20GB download.”

Hmmm. No mention yet of actual physical discs yet.

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-1

liveblog-sony-playstation-4

Michael Denny is up now.

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-2

We still haven’t seen what the Console looks like yet.

Herman Holst from Gorilla Games is up on stage now.

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-3

Now we’re seeing a game called Killzone Shadowfall.  Looks Badass!

Very futuristic metropolis.  It’s set in the year 2381.  Looks incredible.

I guess we play a futuristic soldier.  We play Lucas Kellar and WHOA.  Explosions everywhere.  AWESOME! Graphics are amazing.

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-4

Looks a little like Halo play.

This looks inasne.  Tons of big guns, grenades, and monsters. We’re hanging on a cable of an aerial vehicle trying to shoot the bad guys as we fly through the city.

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-5

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-6

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-7

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-8

Okay, next up a driving game from Evolution Studios. Drive Club.

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-9
They’ve been working on drive club for 10 years now! “It’s always been a very simple concept about driving the very best cars in the world in the greatest locations in the world.”

“Next generation no longer just means more powerful… We want to play great looking games like this, but in new ways that fit our permanently connected social lives. For us, that means driving in a team.”

“Driving Club is a game to play with real clubs, asynchronously and online, against other clubs all around the world.”

live0537

You get rewards for playing, regardless of how you finish — he just ref’d “the best online shooters.” So, expect some sort of CoD style experience.

You can also watch racers try to beat your challenges even if you’re away from your console.

“Every section of every track is packed with challenges.”

“First-person games are also great at transporting you and your friends fully into their worlds. We’re using first-person perspective to make sure you and your mates feel exactly as you should when you roll your car… like this.”

liveblog-sony-playstation-4

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-1

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-2

liveblog-sony-playstation-4

“This isn’t cockpit view, this is true first-person racing.”

We actually get in the car and set belt up as if it were us actually going to race.

It’s Suckerpunch’s Nate Fox talking about… getting teargassed.

“Our security comes at a high price: our freedom.”

“Picture how things would change, if the world would react, if people developed super-human abilities.”  WTF?

Looks crazy.  We’re seeing a dystopian future with cameras and dudes in yellow body armor being attacked.

WOW. Very violent.    And it is the next ‘Infamous’ game.  cool.

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-1

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-2

“PlayStation will always be a leader in encouraging others to push the boundaries.”

“In the next few minutes we would like to take you on an adventure into the imaginations of three unique creators.”

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-3

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-4

Beautiful music is playing, we’re solving puzzles.  It’s a 25 hour game, he says, and it will be exclusive to the PS4.

And it’s called The Witness.

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-5

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-6

David Cage from Quantic Dream is now on-stage.

“Getting the player emotionally involved is the holy grail of all game creators.”

“Emotion is something complex and challenging to capture… in a medium like ours, technology is very important. It is what we rely on to get the player emotionally involved.”

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-7

“With the PlayStation 4, games have now finally reached that stage.” Meaning, that they have reached the point where they can show the most subtle emotions on screen.

We’re seeing a comparison of polygon counts — 30,000 polygons for characters in their new game!

WOW. It looks insane.  These graphics and features are going to be insane.  We’re seeing an amazing rendered face, running in real-time.

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-8

Media Molecule now is up.  “Creativity takes many forms these days.”

“Creativity is everywhere, but it can feel fractured… how can we cut through the crap?”

Recording dreams?

liveblog-sony-playstation-4
liveblog-sony-playstation-4-1

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-2

“completely fallen in love” with the Move controller.

We’re seeing some sculpting happening, in 3D

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-3

They’re sketching, collaborating, adding and subtracting into a virtual, 3D scupture.

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-4

We’re seeing a sculpture being played back, coming to life out of simple shapes and looking quite impressive.

“It makes 3D sculpting easy for beginners, and deep for masters.”

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-5

WOW!

“It’s fast to create.”

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-6

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-7

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-8

Another player has joined, controlling someone playing the character.

They are controlling this.  VERY COOL.

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-9

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-10

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-11

The controls are a little unclear — they’re basically just waving the Move controllers to the beat.

He just flashed up a huge list of game devs that are going to be supporting the console. Basically everyone.

liveblog-sony-playstation-4

Yoshinori Ono is up no from Capcom.

“It feels good to finally be able to talk about this stuff. I hope you are eager to listen to this as well.”

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-1

Now we are seeing old games again.  Come on, show me that CONSOLE!

“And now here we are with the announcement of the PlayStation 4.” This game is codenamed Panta Rhei.

Game has  very detailed faces, realistic fire and environments.

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-2

“Deep down” is the working title.

The dragon and fire graphics are unreal.

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-3

liveblog-sony-playstation-4

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-1

ONTO Square Enix.  New Final Fantasy Game?”

Yoshihisa Hashimoto is on-stage.

“it’s a great pleasure to be present at the announcement of the PlayStation 4. This is a historical event for the gaming industry.”

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-2

“Today’s demo isn’t a game, but rather a real-time demo running on PlayStation 4. This demo was created using Lumia Studio.” this is the name for their game engine.

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-5

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-6

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-4

This looks very good. Incredible, but it’s something we have already seen, but longer now.

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-7

“This is the level of quality that Square Enix is targeting for our next-generation titles.”

Now, it’s  Shinji Hashimoto.

“Today, I just have one thing to say…”

“I would also like to announce that we are preparing for development of a Final Fantasy title. Please be excited for E3 this year.”

liveblog-sony-playstation-4

Ubisoft CEO and co-founder Yves Guillemot is up next.

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-1

“We are using the PS4’s quantum leap in power and graphics and AI to create deeper, richer and more powerful games.”

Jonathan Moran is here to give us a demo of Watch Dogs.

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-3

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-2

“Now, it’s the next step: smart cities. A system that manages entire cities to solve complex problems.”

“In Watch Dog, you’re going to control all of it.”

“I want you all to feel what it’s like… to invade everyone’s privacy without them knowing.”

Watch Dogs is a third-person action game that plays on the interconnectedness of our modern society.

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-4

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-5

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-6

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-7

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-8

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-9

This  looks a lot like Grand Theft Auto.

liveblog-sony-playstation-4

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-2

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-1

WOW.  Looks insane.  And very real.  Tons of features here.

Chris Metzen from Blizzard is up now.

“Many of you are probably wondering why an old-school PC game developer is crashing the big Sony party tonight. I’m very pleased to share with you all tonight that Blizzard and Sony have entered into a strategic partnership through which we will take over the world.”

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-3

DIABLO FUCKING 3 IS COMING TO PS4!

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-1

liveblog-sony-playstation-4

“Diablo III has really never been easier to play. One of the really fun things about this version of the game is that we’ve developed a four-player co-op game that’s full-screen.”

Will be available on both the pS3 and PS4.

“One couch to rule them all” is the catchphrase.  LOL.

Eric Hirshberg from Activision is up and most likely the last guest.

Still no console yet.

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-2

“We’re excited to be a part in bringing the next generation of great games to the next great gaming platform from Sony… But there is one developer in particular who we think has been absent from the PlayStation nation for too long now.”

FUCKING BUNGIE IS COMING TO PS4!!!!

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-3

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-4

“Last week, in Seattle, we gave the world its first glimpse into our ambitious 10 year project Destiny.”

“After Halo, we asked ourselves the question: what’s next? What’s worth doing?

They want to take the FPS and “turn it on its head again” — Bungie’s next great FPS

It’s a “fantastic new universe to explore”

DESTINY!!!

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-6

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-5

“Destiny is going to be amazing on PlayStation4, it’s a great piece of gear. We can’t wait to see what PlayStation fans do when they set foot into our world for the first time.”

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-7

“Destiny is an ambitions project, what we’re calling the world’s first shared-world shooter.”

liveblog-sony-playstation-4-8

“Destiny is an online, connected experience. Like the PlayStation 4, Destiny lets you enjoy your content from multiple devices.”

Versions coming for both the PS3 and PS4, and there’ll be “exclusive, playable” content for just the PlayStations.

And that’s it.  Nothing on the console.
