Film Review: ‘Monkey Kingdom’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Apr 17th, 2015

Janet W., Here…

fbeef64b6ab236c4821a3a215cf81ef81e8c2859

Monkeys, Tina Fey, and a series of calamitous frolicking couldn’t be anything, but a delightful time.  Disneynature’s Monkey Kingdom follows Maya, a lowborn female monkey, through her journey to challenge the caste system.  The highborn, The Sisterhood (Queens), three female monkeys with red splattered faces, is given the best food, lodging, grooming, obedience, and fear.  Slightly lower than The Queens is Raja, the highest born alpha male monkey.  Far underneath The Queens and Raja and still other levels of lieutenants and random monkeys is sweet Maya.  Like any human would, Maya endeavors to make a better life for herself and was fearless in her pursuit of it.

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 31st, 2015

Janet W., Here…

WOMAN IN GOLD

The Piano.  Schindler’s List. I have seen films about the Holocaust and the invasion of countries by the Nazi regime.  Along comes Woman in Gold a true story about one woman’s fight against Nazi-sympathizing Austria.  Mrs. Maria Altmann (Helen Mirren) loses her sister and within her sister’s belongings finds a postcard of Gustav Klimt’sWoman in Gold” painting.  Shortly after this find, Austria announces their intent to restore stolen artwork to their rightful owners namely the Jewish families who were robbed by the Nazis when they invaded Austria.  Randy (Ryan Reynolds) is a down on his luck attorney who failed at his solo practice.

WWE: RAW 3/9/15 Recap: Never Ever Trust a Viper

by Angelic Heel on Mar 13th, 2015

Angelic Heel once again…

The road to Wrestlemania never looked so bleak as it does now for all those loyal members of the WWE Universe that have proudly Bought In. Pittsburgh, PA was the scene of one of the most brutal unjustified beatings I have witnessed. RAW came to us live from the Steel City and was filled with its typical hard hitting action and more Intercontinental Championship shenanigans, but it was all darkened by the actions of one man, Randy Orton. Want to know what happened?

Hey guys, Jana here,

ethan_hawke_denzel_washington_antoine_fuqua_training_day_001

In true Hollywood fashion, re-making an old classic is always a popular project and ‘Magnificent Seven‘ is no different. The new Seven is based on, of course, the 1960’s film of the same name that starred Steve McQueen, Yul Brynner, Charles Bronson, Eli Wallach and James Coburn. Of course, this classic is a remake of yet another film, from iconic director Akira Kurosawa’sSeven Samurai‘ from 1954.

Disney has done it again, they’ve taken a popular musical and put it on screen. There are all kinds of takes on how well the film did, the casting choices and even the songs (Hello? Didn’t anyone see the original show before?), not to mention the flack over the prolific double entendres uttered by Johnny Depp’s Big Bad Wolf to Lilla Crawford’s Red Riding Hood, once again, did you NOT see the original people? I loved it, one of the high points is Meryl Streep as the witch. Meryl is flawless regardless her role. Now the Blu-ray is coming on March 24, 2015!!!

Comic Con: Dallas Fan Days 2015!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 9th, 2015

Hillary T., Here…

cc011

As a fangirl, I love comics and dressing up. I love being someone else for one day and let’s not lie, Comic Con is my mother ship. This weekend was no exception. I spent two days basking the glory and adoration that was formerly Sci-Fi Expo and is now Fan Days 2.0! It’s my family, and walking through the doors of the Irving Convention Center is always like being at home. It is very much like a space ship or the Sandcrawler from ‘Star Wars’, with its four levels, an over powering awning, and yet, when the parking attendant took mine and Taylor’s (lead camera) money, we were excited and ready to get out of the car and start mingling with everyone and see what Fan Days 2015 had to offer. I decided to go ahead and dress up, because hey, who doesn’t like it when press looks like someone else? My costume of choice? Totally obscure and amazing! I was ready to go as Special Agent Dale Cooper, from Twin Peaks. I even brought along a thermos of “Damn fine coffee,” and a bag of donuts. Dead Laura Palmer would be waiting for me at the convention, for sure!

Film Review: ‘Big Eyes’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 24th, 2014

Janet W., Here….

A few things are expected when you view a Tim Burton film…dark comedy, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, and a twisted outcome.  Big Eyes is different.  The true story of Margaret D.H. Keane/Margaret (Amy Adams), a renowned artist, is told in bright light.  The only seemingly twisted or dark aspect of Big Eyes are the twin pools of the deepest fathoms that are the eyes of the people in Margaret’s paintings.  Big Eyes follows the sad yet courageous journey of Margaret from the escape from her first marriage to her triumph of finding her self as well as her voice.

Vinnie Jones Co-stars On The CW’s ‘Arrow’!!!

Where Marvel-based comic book films have the leading edge over DC-based films, with character introduction and cross-branding, especially  when you take into the post-film stinger that we’ve all learned to wait for, but DC does have a strong point over Marvel with TV serials. I know, Marvel is getting into the small-screen game, too, but it’s no match for DC’s proven titles that have been drawing in crowds from the beginning. Where Marvel didn’t get into the series racket until 1974 with ‘Super Spidey Stories‘ that aired during small segments of ‘The Electric Company‘, DC began in the 1950’s and has kept producing through the decades.

Pride film

Films based on historic events concerning equal rights and marginalized groups rarely, if ever, have giant dance sequences and laugh out loud moments….until now! “Pride” is set in Margaret Thatcher’s England at a time when the government went heavily against a national strike by coal miner’s unions.  Seeing the similarities in oppressions, a group adequately named “Lesbians and Gays Support Miners” makes the union’s cause their own.

There has already been some talk about a new biopic of sorts based on the life of Scribner’s iconic editor Max Perkins. Perkins worked with such literary notables as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Thomas Wolfe and Ernest Hemmingway. In hearing tales of how these respected authors worked, the amount of difficulty friends and family had with some, I can only imagine the set of balls it would take to be the one forced with fact-checking, making corrections and offering changes in whole to the manuscripts. The flip-side of the downfalls to the job is that the editor is allowed to nurture and encourage talent in it’s various forms. This is precisely what Perkins did, and what will pique the curiosity of viewers the world over.

Robin Williams 1951-2014!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Aug 11th, 2014

Jana here,

Robin Williams-AES-050543

This is a truly sad day. Robin Williams was found dead of an apparent suicide today. Williams was found dead in his Northern California home. The actor had been battling some pretty heavy depression lately and Williams had struggled with addiction earlier on in his career, but recently went to rehab to help maintain his sobriety, his rep said at the time. The rehab stint would have gone unnoticed, expect that the comedian opted to pose with a fan for a photo at a Dairy Queen near the facility, and the picture eventually went viral.

Top 10 List of Reboots We Don’t Want To See!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 8th, 2014

Paul N., Here…

Terminator-5-TV-Series

Like Bill Murray once said, “he’s got to be stopped. And I have to stop him.” You might have thought he was talking about a weather-predicting rodent, but no, he was actually talking about studio executives (the “he” is collective). Hollywood, like any business, is in it to make money. Therefore, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that they choose to rehash tried and true film formulas over and over again rather than take a chance on something new. While this is understandable (albeit infuriating), it doesn’t excuse the idea that EVERYTHING deserves to be re-made. Some films, like priceless art, should never be re-made and re-sold. Every time a classic film gets re-made, audiences hold their collective breaths and hope that it won’t be a straight shot in “the feels” (that nostalgic part of your brain that remembers, with fondness, all your pop culture favorites).

Michael “explosion” Bay is releasing his latest bastardization of 80’s culture unto the world in the shape of the beloved “heroes in a half shell”. In case you haven’t been following, this has been one cluster mess after another. From alien origins to white-washed villains, this movie begs the questions: “does Michael Bay hate the 80’s? Did he have some traumatically horrific experience with toys when he was a kid? Why does he have to take a giant dump on our collective fond memories time after time?”  Read the rest of this entry »

Blu-Ray Review: ‘300: Rise of an Empire’!!

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

300-rise-of-an-empire-blu-ray-cover-69

THE FILM

You would think that by the look of ‘300: Rise of an Empire‘, the sequel to the 2006 hit film ’300′, director Zack Snyder had returned to make this film. Well, you’d be wrong as Noam Murro directed this, making this film his first feature film. But don’t worry, Snyder seemed to have a heavy hand and watchful eye over this film, as his handprints are all over this from his screenplay to the camerawork. It’s all here again in this prequel, side story, and sequel that features a lot of the same characters from the original. ’300′ cost $65 million to make back in 2006 and was largely made in front of a green screen. That film grossed over $457 million dollars.

Different is not necessarily Evil. This is the lesson learned with the telling of King Arthur’s story through the eyes of Morgaine Le Fay in The Mists of AvalonMaleficent provides a different point of view for this timeless villain.  The original insight of Maleficent’s character was in Disney’s Sleeping Beauty where Maleficent was a wicked captor of a gentle beauty.  In her blazing greens and purples, she was terrifying and extremely menacing.  Maleficent offers the origin and growth of a fairy that is just a little bit different than the rest but nonetheless beautiful and powerful.

Roald Dahl is a fantastic author that doesn’t get nearly enough mainstream credit. Film-goers have enjoyed his stories for years and most of us grew up with at least one of them. Film Review: ‘300: Rise of an Empire’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 6th, 2014

Hi, Bryan Here….

EW-300-rise-of-an-empire-banner

You would think that by the look of ‘300: Rise of an Empire‘, the sequel to the 2006 hit film ‘300’, director Zack Snyder had returned to make this film. ‘300’ cost $65 million to make back in 2006 and was largely made in front of a green screen. That film grossed over $457 million dollars.

Jana B. here,

bryan-singer

Bryan Singer is one busy dude in the entertainment industry, he’s known for the ‘X-Men‘ movies, ‘Superman Returns‘, ‘Jack the Giant Slayer‘ and of course he burst onto our radar with 1995’s twisted crime flick ‘The Usual Suspects‘ that made Singer and Keyser Söze common names. In addition to all the movie titles he has under his belt, he was also the director for the pilot of David Shore’s hit medical drama series ‘House‘ on Fox. Shore and Singer worked together to executive produce the accolade-accumulating series for the entire eight–season run.

Film Review: ’12 Years A Slave’

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 24th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

john-legend-12-years-soundtrack-lead

There have been many films about slavery and the Civil War over the years. Only a couple have been good, and those have featured a big war in the storyline. But as far as a story strictly on slavery goes, the film count doesn’t have a lot of marks for great movies. With the exception of Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Django Unchained’, which was more a fantasy and revenge flick on slavery, british director Steve McQueen’s ’12 Years A Slave’ is a phenomenal film from top to bottom, yet it’s extremely rough to watch in certain parts due to the emotional content of the story. Chiwetel Ejiofor leads an all-star cast in one of the finest films in recent memory. One we won’t soon forget and will discuss with friends, families, strangers, and others for months to come.

Fernando’s Review of ’12 Years A Slave’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 24th, 2013

Fernando M., Here…

 twelve-years-a-slave-michael-fassbender

Last year, we saw two films tackle the darkest of moments in American History.  Quentin Tarantino’sDjango Unchained” gave us a “what if?” historical satire that was a hit with critics and audiences alike.  Steven Spielberg chimed in too with the also acclaimed, though incredibly white washed, “Lincoln,” which depicted the legislative maneuvering that underwent to abolish slavery.

The Top 20 Vampire Movies Of All Time!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 20th, 2013

Jana B., Here…

085 - Evil Ed

I love making lists. Grocery lists. Bucket lists. Holiday lists. Favorite movie lists. Favorite VAMPIRE movie lists. I bet that got your attention, didn’t it? This is MY list of the top 20 Vampire movies ever made. Why did I point out that it was MY list? Easy. So you read this knowing it wasn’t an Academy vote that got a movie on this list. No one paid me to promote their movie. However, I’m NOT against this, just to be clear. Why spend time putting movies in a list? Maybe it satisfies some Freudian lack of paternal affection I suffered as a child. But the real answer is, “Why wouldn’t I make a list as awesome as this?”

300-rise-of-an-empire

Well, we’re finally getting a sequel to ‘300‘. The title is of course ‘300: Rise of an Empire‘ and brings back Lena Headey as Queen Gorgo and Rodrigo Santoro as Xerxes. Eva Green will play Artemisia and Sullivan Stapleton will play Themistocles. This trailer is all sorts of cool as it transitions nicely from the original ‘300’ film and features a thrilling speech from Gorgo. I cannot wait.

Bryan Reviews Oliver Stone’s ‘Savages’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 6th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

After a few years of getting a softer side of Oliver Stone, Savages brings the director back to his ultra violent, drug induced, sex crazed, and savage side.  Based on Don Winslow’s novel, Savages tells an intense tale of drugs, sex, and betrayal.  I really missed this side of Oliver Stone.  I’ve been hoping for a film that can be put in the same cookie jar as Natural Born Killers, Platoon, and U Turn.  Instead, we have received films like Wall Street 2: Electric Boogaloo, W., and World Trade Center.  By far not his best work nor interesting.  So the big question is, “Did Oliver Stone deliver the goods on his return to a more sadistic film?”

Bryan’s ‘Mirror Mirror’ Review!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 29th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

I didn’t know what quite to expect from ‘Mirror Mirror’.  I have seen the trailers and have compared them to the other Snow White film coming out this year (Snow White and the Huntsman), and immediately knew that ‘Mirror Mirror’ was the sillier of the two.  Did I hate ‘Mirror Mirror’?  No.  Did I like ‘Mirror Mirror’? No.  ‘Mirror Mirror’ is a foolish yet whimsical film based on Disney’s classic, Snow White.  I have no doubt that ‘Mirror Mirror’ will be eaten up by kids under 12, but if your age is above that of a 6th grader, then you might find yourself angry that you bought a ticket.

HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones’ series is one of the better series to come out in the last 20 years.  Based on the books by George R.R. Martin which are called ‘A Song of Fire and Ice’, this series adaptation is top notch in every aspect.  If you haven’t seen HBO’s ‘ Game of Thrones’ or read George R.R. Martin’s novels, then I highly suggest you do a few things.  First, purchase this bluray set.  It will be the best purchase you will make this year so far.  Second, set your DVR’s to record this series.  And third, get the books.  This is truly one of the best HBO series that has been released on bluray.

‘Annie Hall’ is finally on blu-ray and that is good news folks.  But at least for me, it’s bittersweet good news.  Sadly, like most or all Woody Allen dvd’s or blu-rays, this does not have any extras besides the trailer.  Wouldn’t it be amazing if there was a commentary by Allen on ‘Annie Hall’?  But, with that said, this is the best the film has looked and should be in everyone’s collection.  ‘Annie Hall’ is a comedic masterpiece of love, loss, and wit.  One of the best films of all time.

Bryan Reviews ‘Cars 2’ in 3D!!! (A 3D Blu-ray Review)

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 19th, 2011

Hi Bryan Here…..

I liked two things from Cars 2.  It looks really good and crisp.  And Bruce “man-god” Campbell lends his voice to one of the cars.  That’s it.  I don’t understand why Pixar lowered the bar with this one.  Cars 2 actually should have been called “The Mater Show” since the film it 95% about him, which is just terrible on every level.  Maybe it’s because I find Larry the Cable Guy just an untalented guy.  The first Cars film has always been my least favorite of all the Pixar films, but that’s not saying much, because every Pixar film is AWESOME.  AWESOME until this sequel.  However this is one of the best looking Pixar films ever to grace blu-ray.  And the 3D is top notch after the first big scene of the film.  But does that make it worth the buy?  You be the judge.

Hollywood has a rich tradition of releasing competing movie projects at virtually the same time.  Armageddon squared off against Deep Impact.  Before that, Big duked it out with Vice Versa and roughly 87 other body-swapping comedies, the last of which was kept on a shelf until finally being released earlier this year (The Change-Up).  So it is that two studios have set their sights on updated interpretations of Snow White, currently scheduled to be released with 3 months of each other. Hi Bryan Here….

I remember watching Degrassi growing up way back when it first started.  It has changed quite a bit in its 10th season but the core of the stories are still there.  I remember when Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes (Jay and Silent Bob) got involved with the Degrassi franchise.  This 10th season had 44 episodes and was previously known as Degrassi: The Next Generation but dropped ‘The Next Generation’ part for this 10th season.  This was quite fun to watch, but I’d imagine teens and pre teens would enjoy it more than I did.

The Bishop Charlotte reporting….

Oh good. I was starting to get worried.

Mostly because my mother, who was ridiculously excited about the film, was starting to get worried, but I do love a good Michael Douglas flick. And Matt Damon is adorable no matter how you swing. Plus, we get to watch Michael Douglas swing towards Matt Damon! After seeing Robert De Niro pull off flamboyant (in 2007’s underrated Stardust) I’ve had an odd but acceptable desire to see other ladies’ men jump the fence for a flick.

The Bishop Charlotte reporting….

In 1989, Herbert Ross directed a chick flick entitled Steel Magnolias and wowed America with an all-star cast. Dolly Parton, Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis, and new-at-the-time Julia Roberts played the titular tarts and used their acting chops to save a movie that could have been the most melodramatic film of the 80’s (which, let’s be frank, would be saying something.) Steel Magnolias pushed past its flaws and became a classic.

Hi Bryan Here….

On Sept. 20, the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (DADT) goes into effect.  HBO will tell the strange-but-true tale of the U.S. military’s ban on gays and lesbians from its implementation, through passionate protests and debates, and finally to its 2011 repeal.  A timely and historical look at the legacy of gays and lesbians in the military, THE STRANGE HISTORY OF DON’T ASK, DON’T TELL illustrates the tumultuous evolution of the controversial policy that fostered hate and intolerance within the military – and undermined the very freedoms American forces defend – by forcing many soldiers to lie and live in secrecy.

Movie Quotes

Ron Camp:
Who is he, a friend?
Melissa Robinson:
No, this is my date. He's a lawyer.
Ron Camp:
Well, does he have a name, or should I call him "lawyer?"
Melissa Robinson:
No, this is Ace... um, Tom Ace.
Ace Ventura:
Tom Ace. Pleasure to meet you Sir and may I congradulate you on all your success... you smell TEREFFIC! I was just telling Melissa that one of the first things we learned back at... Stanford Law... was the modern proliferation of food poisoning claims against wealthy, private homeowners. In fact, if one were so inclined, one could make quite a lucrative law practice on little else. How is everyone feeling tonight?
Ron Camp:
[nervously] Very, very well, thank you.
