Top 10 Books That Need To Become Movies!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jan 10th, 2015

Hey guys, Jana here,

bookstack

I love to be entertained, whether it’s watching a great movie, ballgame, series, listening to Led Zeppelin or reading a book, I always have at least two of them going at once. Reading gets a lot of time and attention from me, so it stands to reason that I would have a list of favorite books, not just favorites that I love to read, but favorite titles that should be given the big screen treatment.

Film Review: ‘Sin City 2: A Dame To Kill For’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 21st, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

sin-city-2-a-dame-to-kill-for-eva-green-ava-lord

Second verse, same as the first. It’s been almost ten years since Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller brought us the noir-soaked graphic novels known to comic book fans around the world as ‘Sin City‘, which was created by Miller himself. This seedy, ultra violent, and nasty underworld, where crime is rampant and the bad guys end up on top of this booze drenched and drug induced city is the backdrop for some of the most entertaining characters in ever to come out of a graphic novel.

Film Review: ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 7th, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

TMNT-2014-Desktop-Wallpaper-HD1

It has been 21 years since we’ve had a ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles‘ live action movie in theaters. In 2007, there was a CG animated ‘TMNT‘ film, which was actually quite good. And of course there have been the comic and two different animated series. And now we have a complete reboot of the entire franchise in live action form from Jonathan Libesman (the guy who directed ‘Wrath of the Titans‘ and ‘Battle Los Angeles‘). You can add to that so-called talent the worst filmmaker to ever come out of Hollywood, Michael Bay (‘Armageddon‘) as a hands on producer. The sad thing about this reboot is that it has tons of potential to be a great film. A really great film. But everything went wrong everywhere with the movie, and poor decisions were made, and now we have a steaming pile of shit for a film that could have run with the best of the Marvel Comic book films.

Hey everyone, Jana here,

It seems that everything can be made into a movie, anymore. Where Hollywood seems to hit the re-make option a bit too much, they also surprise us with something very original. Case in point – ‘Tupperware Unsealed‘. Sony recently picked up rights to author Bob Kealing’s non-fiction book that will be the basis for the film which will star Sandra Bullock.

Film Review: ’22 Jump Street’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 11th, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

1396290301000-22-JUMP-STREET-MOV-JY-3504--63256180

The movie theater chains across America are plagued with sequels, reboots, and remakes these days. It seems like almost every film out there is either a sequel or a remake of an older film, leaving the original indie films left out to dry for the more independent theaters or video-on-demand. While you want these sequels and remakes to be just as good as the original or first film, most of them fall a little short, or are down right terrible. There are only a select few sequels that receive the praise and box office power that have audiences across the globe cheering its name. And I’m happy to report that ‘22 Jump Street‘ falls into that category, maybe even being towards the top of that list.

Film Review: ‘The Signal’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 10th, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

signal21

Starting last year and heading into the year 2016, we will be bombarded with tons of sci-fi films. This is great news, people. We have seen a treasure trove of this great genre with big action blockbusters that cost upwards of $200 million and some more meager projects that cost less than a tenth of that budget, while still maintaining decent visual effects and sci-fi story lines. I could start listing some of these movies, but I’d be here for a few hours. Whether these current sci-fi films are good or bad, we are still receiving excellent characters and story arcs that dare us to think and dream.

Dallas Comic Con 2014 Coverage!!

Comic Con. The word evokes a range of feelings from a vast diversity of people who come together to celebrate their passions and show their allegiances to their fandoms.  The ways to do this are many, be it through dressing up as their favorite character, meeting the actors and actresses who bring those characters to life, or expressing it in countless other ways, Dallas Comic Con of 2014 offered something for everyone.  Between the vendors offering one of a kind collectibles, getting one on one time with celebrity guests, the panels that brought like minds together, and the sense of camaraderie and belonging between the attendees, I was not disappointed in my first foray into the world of comic book conventions.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead To Be ‘Exposed’?

by Red Zeppelbon on Mar 11th, 2014

Hello Jana here,

Mary-Elizabeth-Winstead

If you’re shopping for the cast to be in a pilot of a new series, you can rarely get better than a well-known actor, with a dedicated fan base, to play the lead. This is what director Patty Jenkins was thinking when she courted Mary Elizabeth Winstead for the lead in ABC’s new drama series ‘Exposed‘. Jenkins was the writer and director for the gritty feature ‘Monster‘ that won Charlize Theron a myriad of awards as she portrayed infamous serial killer Aileen Wuornos.

I’m surprised it’s taken this long for there to be a spoof made from ‘The Fast and Furious‘.  The writer-director team of Aaron Seltzer and Jason Friedberg who have both brought us’Vampires Suck‘, (as if ‘Twilight‘ didn’t already show us that), and ‘Meet The Spartans‘. Personally, they ought to be grateful King Leonidas isn’t around to kick their arses all over the place for that one, but I digress. Serratos is back into the world of the undead, this time on the small screen, having been cast in the upcoming fourth season of AMC’s hit zombie drama The Walking Dead. Misty S. Delivers Her Thoughts On ‘Grown Ups 2’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 11th, 2013

Misty S., Here….

grown-ups-2-1

Adam Sandler, the founder of Happy Madison films, has used the same formula for every movie that he has ever done. He took some of his unknown buddies that have all started in his first movie “Billy Madison” and every movie since, combined with his ‘Saturday Night Live‘ buddies and throws in some big guest appearances for added entertainment to create a comedic movie that all will love and flock to go see in the theaters. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn’t. This time, though, it did better than I expected it to. ‘Grown Ups 2‘, the obvious sequel to ‘Grown Ups‘, came and delivered, even with all the press and hype to it. This movie is not really a sequel since it can be watched without seeing the first one, but when one does not know what to call a “sequel”, just add a #2 to it. Adam Sandler, David Spade, Chris Rock and Kevin James have the chemistry and natural banter, like they had in the first one, that makes the movie ebb and flow without hardly any slow or unfunny scenes to sit through. There are, however, the same jokes that you see in all of the Happy Madison films and even on ‘Saturday Night Live‘. This is the type of film that when you walk into it, you are already knowledgeable of what is going to happen.

Although ‘Beasts of the Southern Wild‘ didn’t win, there was some well-deserved victories. We also had out 6th annual live commentary last night, and it was a great success. Hi, Bryan Here….

The Golden Globes were last night and Tina Fey and Amy Poehler killed it. They were amazing.  Even former president Bill Clinton showed up to talk about Spielberg’s ‘Lincoln‘.  Even though I really liked the film ‘Argo‘, I was shocked when it won best film and director for Ben Affleck. I was happy to see ‘Django Unchained‘ win for best supporting actor for Christoph Waltz and screenplay for Tarantino. If this is any pre-cursor to the Oscars, I’d be completely let down if ‘Argo‘ takes it all.  Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great film, but not the best film of the year.  I expect it to and want it to win the best adapted screenplay.  Just my opinion.  Below are the full results from last night’s show.

Bryan’s Review of ‘Bachelorette’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 6th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here…..

Leslye Headland’s ‘Bachelorette’ tries to combine ‘The Hangover’ and ‘Bridesmaids’ into a solid film.  But, with its characters, who I’d rather see pushed out of an airplane at 30,000 feet without a parachute then watch another minute of them on screen, really soured this film’s potential.  ‘Bachelorette’ was originally an off-Broadway play by Headland, who subsequently wrote and directed the film adaptation you see now.  This whole story and cast looks great on paper, however these characters are just terrible people, who really have no redeeming qualities to make you feel good about them or good about yourself watching the film.  And after the whole film shows that these characters are miserable people, the last two minutes of the film tries to wrap everything up in a cozy happy little ball with our four main actresses dancing like nothing happened.  It makes no sense.

Bryan’s ‘Flareup’ DVD Review!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 24th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

Racquel Welch is a goddess. In ‘Flareup’, you can see why Welch was a leading lady in so many films.  She was a sex symbol and a surprisingly very funny and gifted comedy actress.  It’s very easy to watch Welch on screen and become hypnotized by her beauty, that you completely forget the title of the film you are watching.  Then you snap out of it and think, “WOW, this movie and Welch were amazing.”  This film does exactly that.  Sadly, ‘Flareup’ was one of those long lost forgotten films, that most of you never heard of.  And thank the geniuses over at the Warner Archive collection for finally releasing this on DVD.

‘Cannonball Run’ is most certainly an acquired taste.  Much like a fine scotch.  It’s not for everyone.  If you’re a fan of those late 70’s early 80’s silly goofball comedies, than ‘Cannonball Run’  is the movie for you.  However, if you aren’t, then this movie will be like nails on a chalkboard.  I will say that it has an amazing cast with the likes of; Burt Reynolds, Farrah Fawcett, Dom Deluise, Roger Moore, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Jackie Chan, Adrienne Barbeau, and Jamie Farr to name a few.  This i movie is a lot of fun if you’re into this sort of thing, and my guess is that like myself, you have seen this over a dozen times.  ‘Cannonball Run’  is a zany film to have fun with.

Hi Bryan Here…..

The 84th annual Academy Award nominations are in.  There are a couple of surprises that I was very happy to see on here and tons of disappointment.  It looks like the Academy went with 9 Best Picture noms this year rather than 10.  They also only went with 3 noms for make up which I can think of others, and only two for original song.  Was this a time issue, so that the event would be over on time for once rather than have all 5 songs being sung?  I don’t like it, but that’s how it is this year.  Below you will see each category with my thoughts.  Enjoy.

Bryan Reviews Toy Story 2 in 3D!!! (A 3D Blu-ray Review)

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 15th, 2011

Hi Bryan Here….

Toy Story 2 is definitely in my top list of best sequels ever.  It shares the list with Godfather 2.  It’s always a crap shoot with sequels, but Pixar did it right with Toy Story.  It added new lovable characters along with some new villains.  And again with the 3D, this sequel amps of the 3D from the first film.  The story is just as good as the first one and adds new laughs and plot.  It never seems redundant from the first film and is always quick to satisfy.  Also let us note that this was the first time Pixar toyed with my emotions making me choke up.  They enjoy doing this to me in later movies like Wall-E, and Up.  But, Toy Story 2 3D edition is badass on all levels and any 3D enthusiast and lover of films and Pixar should rush out to get this.

Bryan Enjoys The ‘Straw Dogs’ Remake!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 16th, 2011

Hi Bryan Here….

Once I heard of the news that Sam Peckinpah’s 1971 film ‘Straw Dogs’ was getting remade, I was completely skeptical.  It was going to take one hell of a cast a crew to fill Peckinpah’s and Dustin Hoffman’s shoes.  I honestly didn’t think it could be done, but alas I think Peckinpah would be proud of this modern day re-telling of his work from Gordon Williams’ novel, ‘The Siege of Trencher’s Farm’.  Now the remake has its flaws, but everything from the original is mostly seen in this remake.  For fans of the original or for people new to the story, I definitely think you will enjoy all the brutal and barbaric images portrayed in this remake of ‘Straw Dogs’.

Hi Bryan Here….

Inspired by the beloved stories from A.A. Milne’s books and crafted in Disney’s classic style, “Winnie the Pooh,” is the most critically-acclaimed animated film of 2011.  It is narrated by the voice of John Cleese and features the vocal talents of legendary voice actor Jim Cummings(over 350 voices including Gnomeo & Juliet) and a host of other distinctive actors including Craig Ferguson(TV’s ‘The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson’), Tom Kenny (TV’s ‘SpongeBob SquarePants’), Bud Luckey (Toy Story 3) and musical performances by Zooey Deschanel (indie folk band “She & Him”).

Ben K. Here….

‘Snow Flower and the Secret Fan’ Review

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan is a film filled with good intentions, but a poor understanding of subtlety. Wayne Wang, the film’s Chinese American director, takes aim at a particular demographic and pushes every possible button. Wang has been better; see The Joy Luck Club. I found his latest to be redundant in both message and narrative, as it essentially tells the same story twice in different costumes.

Hi Bryan Here….

WOW.  This was a mighty mighty fun blu-ray set to get through.  Took a while as there are hours and hours of extras and commentaries to listen and watch.  It was great watching all of these again.  Some greater than others.  I haven’t watched all of the Superman films since that tin DVD box set came out several years ago.  Oh man do these newly remastered blu-rays look fucking beautiful in HI-DEF.  So, this particular review will be set up by film.  I will go through all eight discs of the set and outline everything you would ever want to know about them.  From the movie itself to the extras and the audio and video quality.  This is one hell of a set and Warner Bros. and DC went above and beyond the call of making one AWESOME home video release in Superman.

Amy Adams Cast As Superman’s Lois Lane!!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 28th, 2011

Hi Bryan Here….

Now I have spoken out on who should play Lois Lane before.  My first suggestion has always been Selma Blair.  She looks the part and is one hell of an actress.  But this news according to Hero Complex that actress Amy Adams (The Fighter, Enchanted, Catch Me If You Can) has been cast as Lois Lane is wonderful.  Amy Adams has been nominated for an Oscar for her acting three times.  She is one hell of an actress and I believe she will be the best Lois Lane yet.

Bryan Made A Short Film… Click Here to See It!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 10th, 2010

Hi Bryan Here…

Back last July, myself and my next door neighbor, Jay Shirtz, set out to make a short film in the heat of the summer.  We had a great cast and crew  that were comprised of our good friends, and we shot it all in one long night.  It was all filmed on location at one of our houses, and at a wooded park.

I would like you all to welcome Boomstick’s newest writer and contributor, CrescentFresh_22.  He hangs his hat in the great city of Wichita and enjoys a good cigar and glass of scotch.  He is one of two people I know who has seen Adam Sandler’s first movie, “Going Overboard” twice in a row and was one of the first people to get their hands on a copy of Boondock Saints over 10 years ago.  He can be found at any point  during the day watching a Troma movie marathon and writing letters to his personal hero, Billy Mitchell.  Please make him feel welcome.  I know this review is a little late, but the movie hasn’t been out for very long, and is still making money, so if you have not seen the new Resident Evil movie yet, maybe this review will get you in that theater seat.  Enjoy.

I finally got down to my local theater to see a movie, and of all the options available I choose to see the latest edition in the Resident Evil franchise.  I’ll be honest with you, it was the 3D that sold me on this movie and if the third dimension wasn’t available, I likely would have watched something different.  I had not seen or heard anything about this movie, so I was really going in fresh.  In that light, I am going to do my best to make sure that there are is as little spoilers here as possible.

Let’s start at the beginning…  Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D uses the same team that was responsible for Avatar, and it shows.  The opening shot has a scene in the rain, and rain in 3D shows depth and layers that immerse the viewer right away. The director must have loved how it looked in the rain as well because later in the movie there is another scene that takes place indoors and yet has rain effects… but who cares because it looks great!  The 3D is truly stunning, and I will say now that it is worth the price of admission.

I will also let you know now that there may be a slight bias because this movie has two actresses that were crushes of mine throughout my 20’s.  Milla Jovovich looks as good as ever, and the movie constantly reminded me of why I was so fond of her ever since The Fifth Element.  Then there’s Ali Larter, who had my full attention from the moment she wore the whip cream bikini in Varsity Blues,.  Let’s just say that both of these two lovely ladies helped the younger me out through the lonelier days of my past, and I am eternally grateful.

There are also a couple actors that I think are worth the mention.  Wentworth Miller is in this movie… or as I like to call him, that guy from Prison Break with the tattoos.  And guess what, he’s stuck in a prison and knows how to break out.  Although in this movie he can’t escape without help, and I’m guessing it’s because he doesn’t have the tattoos.  There’s also some guy named Shawn Roberts in this movie that plays the bad guy.  This movie is shot in stunning 3D, and yet all the technology in the world doesn’t seem to save the one dimensional performances of these guys.

The first installment of the series directed by Paul W.S. Anderson was (and still is) my favorite chapter in this series.  While the second and third installments of this series were directed by someone else, Paul W.S. Anderson has returned to direct this film, and I think I know why.  While 3D has been around for some time, it is utilizing new technology and has really advanced a great deal since its first uses.  To that extent, there is a race to have movies presented in 3D.  I think this movie was attempting to gain as many “firsts” as possible, such as the first Real D film shot in the rain, underwater, etc.

You aren’t going to a Resident Evil movie for a powerful character study, but for a video game on film.  This movie succeeds in that.  You get plenty of action sequences, and great special effects.  If you are still reading this, you are likely a fan of the series in some form, so find a 3D showing and go see it.

– CrescentFresh_22

There needs to be more 3-D rain and 3-D under water sequences.
