Jana’s Best/Worst of 2014!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Dec 15th, 2014

Hey guys, Jana here,

PicMonkey Collage

It’s been a big year for the entertainment world. Netflix’s initial push to bring movie-theater worthy films straight to streaming customers and bypassing the big screen altogether set off a chain of deals that will take those fresh releases and push them directly into homes allowing us to bypass a $15.00 soda, but denying us the $20.00 popcorn you can only get at the theater. Then came the deluge of series and movies being made for exclusive run with everyone from Netflix, Amazon to Crackle and everything in between. Top that off with the huge breach of privacy Sony experienced. New releases were flooded onto P2P sharing sites and private emails from the film company’s big wigs that show us how the infrastructure of Sony really works, not to mention what those involved really think of some of their superstars.

Hey guys, Jana here,

Martin Scorsese is one of my favorite directors, if he attaches his name to a project, I watch it, even if I’m not interested in the subject matter, that he hasn’t led me wrong, yet. This unashamed love of his work is why one of my favorite films EVER is ‘The Departed‘. The mob, action, Boston and even including ‘Dropkick Murphys‘ on the soundtrack – that movie was an across the board win for me. So you can understand where I’m coming from when I see the famed director set to exec produce an authorized documentary on one of the most iconic bands of the 60’s, ‘The Grateful Dead‘. Excitement ensues.

Hey guys, Jana here,

When Tim Burton makes a new movie, it gets attention. Be it good, bad or ugly, people talk about it. The newest film to add to the cannon of Burton films is ‘Big Eyes‘. His latest live action film since 2012’s ‘Dark Shadows‘.  A drama centered on the awakening of the painter Margaret Keane, her extravagant success in the 1950’s and the following legal problems she had with her husband. Why did she have legal problems with her husband, you ask? He claimed credit for her paintings in the 1960’s. Talk about a maladjusted marriage! Makes Ike and Tina Turner look like a model of marriage perfection.

Hey guys, Jana here,

I seriously hadn’t thought of Angela Lansbury in years. Sure, I’ll make the ‘Murder, She Wrote‘ joke when the opportunity presents itself, but in my mind, she lives in a cabinet in The Beast’s castle and sings with dishes on occasion. Apparently, she’s not sitting in a cabinet. In fact, the actress is winning Tony’s and impressing the hell out of critics and theater-goers alike, with ‘Blithe Spirit‘. If you happen to be so lucky to be in one of the cities that the cast will be touring through, do yourself a favor and check it out!

Dance Review: ‘MOMIX: Alchemia’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 13th, 2014

Janet W., Here..

2030-fitandcrop-660x365

While set to an ethereal melody, the retractable chandelier ascended into the ceiling to create a starry sky.  Showtime.  The sky dimmed, the music came up and then a spotlight shone on an abstract image on a black curtain, which appears as wood chips on fire, in reds, oranges, and browns ablaze.  This perception changed over the journey that is Alchemia.

Hey Hed-heads, Jana here,

article-2595203-1CC462D300000578-4_634x448

Hedwig and the Angry Inch‘ is a musical that may be new to theater-goers.  Some may have just heard about it when they saw that Neil Patrick Harris got glammed up to play the lead in a revival of the transgendered hit.  Hedwig began in 1998 in an Off-Broadway rendering written and composed by John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask. The pair then took their work to Off-Broadway with Mitchell playing Hedwig and Trask as one of the band members. Not to confuse those of you that are unfamiliar with Hedwig any further, let me give you a run-down.

I hoped this was going to happen, and it has come true! Emma Stone is going to make her Broadway debut in ‘Cabaret‘. Michelle Williams opened the revival of Sam Mendes‘ Tony Award winning production and will take her final bow in the role on November 9. Stone will take over for Williams as the 19-year old English cabaret performer Sally Bowles and her relationship with the young American writer Cliff Bradshaw.

The life of John Lennon has been a topic of discussion and fascination since The Beatles created a world-wide phenomenon with their four chord progressive style, but the means of telling the story has changed over the years. Australian natives actor/musician John R. Waters and singer/pianist Stewart D’Arrietta created a theater production, ‘Lennon: Through A Glass Onion‘ in 1992 in their native Australia where they originally performed the piece. The legendary activist died 12 years before the show debuted while living in New York where he was murdered outside his home by a fan.

Bill Cosby Coming To Netflix!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Aug 14th, 2014

Hey everyone, Jana here,

Netflix is a good place to turn if you want to laugh. Besides their movies and TV shows that can cause you to crack a rib with laughter, they’ve always had a fairly decent supply of live performances by our favorite comedians. I just watched Sherri Shepherd’s stand-up on Netflix, ‘It’s My Time To Talk‘ a few days ago and thought it was one of the most brilliant bits of comedy I’ve seen in a long time.

Finding Neverland‘ was a film released in 2004. Starring Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet, the movie details the experiences of “Peter Pan” author J.M. Barrie, which lead him to write the children’s classic. He got to know four children who have no father. Drawing from his time with the kids, he writes a story about children who don’t want to grow up. In a little bit of a backwards twist, Broadway took an idea from Hollywood to adapt into a musical.

Lauren Bacall 1924-2014!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Aug 13th, 2014

Hi all, Jana here,

Lauren-Bacall-001

Sadly, I’m bringing you another bit of sad news tonight. While the world is still reeling from the loss of Robin Williams, we’ve unfortunately lost another star that adds to the pantheon of Hollywood Royalty that will be shining down on us from above. Lauren Bacall took her leave today at the age of 89.

Bacall shot to stardom during Hollywood’s golden age, with all the sexuality a hundred women possess in only her little finger, she was not accidentally given success, but was one of the most beautiful and glamorous women to prove she had the right to grace the silver screen.  It only took the slightest sound to escape her lips that rendered men powerless. Men wanted her and women wanted to be her. Her first film was the 1944 effort based on an Ernest Hemingway novel, ‘To Have and Have Not’. While this film not only launched her career, but it also paired her with the dashing and always debonair Humphrey Bogart. While  the reasons this was no chance encounter but a divine meeting will soon become clear to all after the siren and the hard-edged cynic with a nobility streak take their working relationship to the next level and end up with rice in their hair when the two thespians became legally wed on May 21, 1945 and lasted until Bogie’s death in  1957. She married one more time in her life to Jason Robards lasting only 8 years and ended in divorce.

Comedian and star of ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm‘, Larry David is taking the Broadway stage by storm when he debuts in the spring starring in his own, autobiographical play. Broadway’s First Black Cinderella Takes Stage!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Aug 6th, 2014

Hey guys, Jana here,

raw_file_url

Remember the movie ‘Akeelah and the Bee‘? Akeelah is all grown up now and preparing to take her place on the Great White Way. Keke Palmer is a long way from where she began her career as a thespian and is watching her dreams come true in a whole new way, now. Palmer will be the title character in ‘Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella‘ bowing on September 9th at the Broadway Theatre. Not only is she the new lead for the show, but she takes precedence as the show’s first black Cinderella. Brandy held the same distinction when she wore the glass slippers in 1997’s TV Movie of the same name.

Hi everyone, Jana here,

Bryan Cranston

When you take a multi-faceted actor like Bryan Cranston, his many hats show throughout his career. You’ve got the spineless, browbeaten dad, Hal from ‘Malcolm in the Middle‘, the absolutely brilliant, frightening, genius that is Walter White from ‘Breaking Bad‘. Then you turn-around and he’s in the ‘Rock of Ages‘ musical whaling out Pat Benatar’s ‘Hit Me With Your Best Shot‘. He does some fantastic voice-over work for animated productions. Remember the 6-episode of the animated version to ‘Clerks‘? Chances are if you’ve seen that, you’ve heard Cranston’s voice ( you also understand Jay’s saying “we steal monkeys all the time!” in a later film), but I digress. PLUS!!!  Don’t forget that he’s a bad boy with the roller skates! Remember that episode in Malcolm where he had a big skate scene? That was really him doing it! He’s a renaissance man. The real deal. So it shouldn’t be such a surprise that after Cranston wrapped with ‘Breaking Bad’ that he went straight to Broadway.

Hey guys, Jana here,

American_Psycho_Musical

Ever hear of two things that shouldn’t go together but end up working? A bit of chocolate in your homemade chili, Kevin Youkilis  as a Yankee, Catherine ZetaJones and Michael Douglas? OK, well maybe not them so much, anymore, but you get my point. ‘American Psycho‘ – the book by Bret Easton Ellis that made a 2000 movie with Christian Bale, evolved into a musical? Yup, you read that one right. Off-Broadway theater company, Second Stage is going to present the U.S. premiere. This has been discussed and debated, but ultimately it’s happened and coming to America next!

Film Review: ‘Finding Vivian Maier’!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Apr 10th, 2014

Hello, Jana here,

FindingVivianMaier_Facebook

When I first heard of ‘Finding Vivian Maier‘, I was intrigued by the story line. Once I looked it up and saw Phil Donahue was in it, I was even more so interested. I wanted to see how the path of these two people intersected. Vivian Maier was an extremely reclusive artist. The term artist was probably never really used to describe her during her lifetime but has become a posthumous descriptor most strangers associate her with.

Hello, Jana here,

Benedict Cumberbatch is an actor that sends fan-girls reeling the world over. He has a quality that is simply irresistible, and film makers have monopolized on his popularity. His big breakthrough came in 2004 with a title role in the TV movie ‘Hawking‘. He worked steadily until he garnered another title role, this time playing the fictional genius, Sherlock Holmes in Steven Moffat’s ‘Sherlock‘. This is the role that marked him as the next big star and made him a household name. He has had his pick of prime acting gigs and his name has been on the tongue of casting directors since then.

Hi, Bryan Here….

modern-neverending-story-characters-1

Not sure if any of you have seen this yet, but I thought it was pretty cool. Artist Nicolas Francoeur has created a bunch of characters from the classic 1980’s film ‘The NeverEnding Story‘, as if the film were to be remade for next year. It’s not a crazy thought, and to be honest, I don’t know why it hasn’t been remade yet. Hell, it had a few sequels.

Opera Review: ‘Aida’

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 1st, 2012

Claire S. Here….

The Dallas Opera’s production of Aida was well-staged, the arias were well-sung, the choreography was well-danced, and yet despite these technical proficiencies, I was emotionally unmoved by the production as a whole.  Although this opera has always been loved for its grand pageantry, the true essence of the story lies in the intimate relationships between the three main characters. Unfortunately, here, the three leads Latonia Moore (Aida), Nadia Krasteva (Amneris), and Antonello Palombi (Radames) had little chemistry on Wednesday night, and their lack of intimacy created a hollowness that plagued the entire performance.

Artist Dave Rapoza has created several BADASS re-creations of one of my favorite cartoons and iconic characters growing up.  The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.  The work is more on the realistic side and just makes everything and every character simply magical and AMAZING.  Sadly Dave has not done the Turtles themselves yet, but hopefully soon he will.  Someone start an online petition and send letters to the studios to get Dave to make the TMNT film.

Hi Bryan Here….

Director Tarsem Singh (The Cell, The Fall) is hard at work on his new film called “Immortals” which brings the myth of Theseus to the silver screen.  IMDB says “Greek warrior Theseus battles against imprisoned titans.”  This looks a lot like 300, but with Tarsem’s stamp on it, I think it is gong to be one hello  of a beautiful and violent film.

Hi Bryan Here…

Terrance Malick might have the best eye for film since Stanley Kubrick.  His new film, “Tree of Life” is set to debut at Cannes this year and after that, the rest of the world will be able to see this beautiful masterpiece.  This poster really does say it all.  It seems they are stills from the trailer.  I cannot wait to see this.

Here’s A Peak At Pixar’s New Film, “Brave”!!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 28th, 2011

Hi Bryan Here….

While I love every Pixar film thus far, I find myself having a hard time getting really amped up for Cars 2.  Don’t get me wrong, I am excited for Cars 2, but I am not that enthused about it.  But for Pixar’s next film which is called “Brave”, I am whole heartedly excited and much thrilled about their new story of a dark fairy tale.

"Inside Out No. II"

Every once in awhile an artist is born that grows and matures into serious double trouble. Not only is artist Nic Noblique renowned for his amazing skill and talent as a metal sculptor, he also tears up the visual art world with his highly sought after oil paintings.

Noblique returns to the Dallas art stage with his latest exhibit, “Music, Flame Retardant & A Tetanus Shot” on Saturday, March 12th at The Cameron Gallery from 6-9pm.

The always impressive body of work showcases many of Noblique’s latest Corten Steel sculptures, several of which are ambitious in size, measuring nearly 16 to 18 feet in height. Each of Noblique’s metal gems come in variety of fantastic powder-coated color, looking like a 1957 Cadillac Eldorado fresh off the showroom floor.

"Dear Marilyn III" by Jonathon Kimbrell.

Tonight marks the official opening of The Cameron Gallery’s annual “Made For Love” exhibit, featuring a wealth of talented and renowned Dallas-based artists.

As February is typically the month of  love and romance the work included in “Made For Love” takes its cue from Cupid’s arrow and showers the walls with objects of obsession and want. Artists Jonathon Kimbrell, Gina Dunn, Nic Noblique, Tanner Lawley and others interpret their views of love to create the amorous spectacle that “Made For Love” has become to be known. “We Are Modern” Sneak Peek

by NapkinArt on Feb 18th, 2011

Hey everyone. Jonathon from Napkin Art Studios here…

As I continue to work on paintings for my upcoming exhibition, “We Are Modern”, opening at The Cameron Gallery April 2, 2011, you can catch sneak previews of some of the work here on the good ‘ol Boomstick site, as well as my own studio blog.

I won’t give away all my goodies, but will do my best to keep everyone returning for more. More importantly, hopefully it’ll get people into the door at the gallery for the opening.

Ok, now back to flipping through vintage issues of “Popular Mechanics” and re-watching all of my available episodes of “Mad Men” for additional inspiration. In case you were wondering, this show is heavily influenced by 1950s and 60s consumer culture.

Stay tuned for further updates.

Two “Mad Men” Prints to Heat Up Your Holidays

by NapkinArt on Dec 11th, 2010

Hey Everyone. Kimbrell here from Napkin Art Studios.

So, hands down my favorite television show of ALL TIME is AMC’s “Mad Men”, featuring my man crush John Hamm as the dapper ‘Don Draper’. Was I ever excited to know that my two favorite print and design studios, Print Mafia and Hero Design, got together and collaborated on two very awesome hand made prints for us “Mad Men” fans to geek-out over.

There is a rule in my family that no one is supposed to buy themselves anything (minus groceries and such) after Halloween until after Christmas, giving my family a chance to surprise everyone with goodies from their holiday wish list. Well, I must confess that I have been breaking that rule left and right this year. I Most certainly couldn’t pass up this owning this awesome artwork.
