Back in 2013, horror master Stephen King released the novel ‘Doctor Sleep‘, which was his sequel to ‘The Shining‘. It was only a matter of time before we got a movie adaptation of it. So here we are in 2018 and it looks like Warner Bros. is developing the project at full steam ahead. Mike Flanagan has been set to write and direct the film. Flanagan is a horror filmmaker himself, where he got his start with the films ‘Oculus‘ and ‘Hush‘.

Good news, everyone. There is a new horror genre film festival looking to scare people next year, which will be called ‘The Overlook Film Festival‘ and will start on April 27th at Oregon’s Timberline Lodge, which was used (exterior shots) for Stanley Kubrick’s ‘The Shining’. Festival heads Michael Lerman and Landon Zakheim announced the event this Halloween and are planning on bringing classic films, new films, experimental events, and interactive fun to the Timberline Hotel. Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

the_chickening_still_5__large

I was fortunate enough to have seen this at last year’s Fantastic Fest in Austin and was completely amazed. I’m not sure if amazed is the right word, but I was something and it has changed me forever. There is really no explanation for ‘The Chickening‘ other than that Toronto-based filmmakers Nick DenBoer and Davy Force took Stanley Kubrick’sThe Shining‘ and made it into something out of an acid trip nightmare with tons of chickens. Insane Clown Posse would be proud. You’ve never seen anything like this before, but you won’t be able to look away, and if you’re like me, you’ll watch it a million times.

Hi, Bryan Here…

This is just so cool.  Artist Kyle Lambert did a paint mash-up of Toy Story and The Shining on his iPad.  It’s just too cool.  Here’s what he said:  “Earlier this year I began following Lee Unkrich, the director of Toy Story 3) on Twitter (@leeunkrich). As well as his journey to the Oscars with Toy Story 3, Lee often tweets about his passion for Stanley Kubrick and the movie The Shining which inspired him to pursue a career in filmmaking. Having seen both The Shining and Toy Story 3 for the first time recently myself, I thought it would be cool idea to mash the two movies together as a fun side project.”

Hi Bryan Here….

Now most of you know I am a HUGE fan of Kubrick’ work.  Anything related to the director, I want to read, watch, and cherish.  There was a documentary that premiered at Sundance recently entitled ‘Room 237’.  It is a documentary on the Kubrick’s ‘The Shining’ movie.  Not the one made by his daughter that is shown on the DVD, but rather a different type of documentary that explores the insane conspiracy theories and subtext of the “real meaning” of ‘The Shining’.

Hi Bryan Here….

“At an awards ceremony at George Mason University last Friday, Stephen King regaled audiences with a chapter from Doctor Sleep, his upcoming novel about a grown-up Danny Torrance from ‘The Shining.  In the book, Danny is a hospice worker who uses his powers to help ill patients to pass away without pain. Unfortunately, he runs afoul of a gang of wandering psychic vampires who feed on people’s energy.”

Film Review: ‘The Intruder’!!

by Janet White on May 2nd, 2019

Hello Everyone, Janet W. here…

“The Intruder was suspenseful and sneaks up on the viewer.”

The Intruder’s opening sequence was a mix match. For what does an Audi commercial have to do with the storyline? The images of a car zooming in and out of traffic are exciting and punching though it does not establish the story or the couple. Though the cinematography was well planned and executed, the sound mixing was off in regards to levels. The songs were introduced in a manner that was jarring and distracting versus really pushing the narrative. The muting of the score and dialogue during Charlie’s rage moments were inconsistent ranging from too low to too high as well. The Intruder will remind you of the cinematic genius of Alfred Hitchcock with its villain shot angles, the use of a MacGuffin, shadow, mise en scéne, and psychological shot composition. The viewer will feel the frustration and trap of the story without question. Also, a little of Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining style rears its head as well, literally. Kudos to Deon Taylor, the director!

‘US’ – Film Review!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 20th, 2019

“‘US‘ is a true masterpiece in horror.”

The horror genre is something sacred and entertaining. It can be whatever you’d like it to be from something of a masked killer on the loose slashing their way through unsuspecting teenage victims to a literal hell unleashing in space to something much more quiet and unnerving like family being torn apart by a demonic entity and everything in between. Jordan Peele has crafted his own horror universe and elements and is 2/2 (so far) in drilling the nail into that horror membrane with precision and accuracy. His latest film simply titled ‘US‘ is much more than a straight out horror film, but something that makes us think about our past, present and ultimate future with each other. I’m happy to say that ‘US‘ is a true masterpiece in horror.

4K UHD Review: ‘Ready Player One’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 18th, 2018

THE FILM

One of the most anticipated movies of the year is finally upon us with Steven Spielberg’s return to the fantasy/sci-fi realm in ‘Ready Player One‘, which is based on the pop-culture fandom novel from 2011 of the same name by author Ernest Cline. The novel was a best-seller and was chock-full of the 1980s and 1990s references in the form of video games, movies, TV shows, and more. in fact, every page of the book was like reading a nostalgic diary of your past childhood favorite things. ‘Ready Player One‘ takes places a few decades into the future where a simulated and very realistic virtual reality game is the main form of entertainment where people put on goggles and can be anyone or anything they want.

Film Review: ‘Hereditary’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 5th, 2018

Being a huge fan of the horror genre, you always hope for something that will stick with you long after you see it, and that will cause you to sleep with the lights on and truly terrify you. More often than not, the horror movies we digest can be easily forgotten in a matter of minutes after viewing with some small laughs and eye rolls, even though we might have a cheap scare, forcing us to jump. Then there are times when we get a seriously horrifying movie that we just can’t shake off. A horror film that scares us to our core and reminds us why we love the horror genre and continues to pave the way in original and creative ways for all things scary. It doesn’t happen as often as it should these days, but we can all rejoice today, because the film ‘Hereditary‘ is here to scare the hell out of us in the best ways possible.
