Film Review: ‘The Room’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 16th, 2017

There is nothing that can be said about ‘The Room‘ that hasn’t been said already.  There’s a book about it, there’s about to be a feature film about it, and it’s show on countless theaters at midnight screenings.  But for those of you who don’t know, let me tell you about this magic.

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

HBO and the Duplass Brothers have come together to make an anthology series titled Room 104, which will have a brand new story each week, where the tone, theme, characters, and time period changing that all takes place in a room at a motel. Below is more information, but I can say that the trailer for this show looks quite good. I mean, it’s HBO, so what would be bad about it, right?

‘Green Room’ Blu-ray Announced and Detailed!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 3rd, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

91LSukBM25L._SL1500_

Green Room‘ was my favorite film from 2015’s ‘Fantastic Fest‘. You don’t get much better than Patrick Stewart as a bad neo-nazi, trying to kill a punk rock band. Not only that, you have the ‘Blue Ruin‘ guys Jeremy Saulnier and Macon Blair on top of this film as well. It’s in theaters now, and I highly recommend you go and see it. Lionsgate has just announced the Blu-ray too, which will release on July 12th with some cool extras. Below is the information.

Film Review: ‘Assassination Classroom’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 18th, 2015

Paul N., Here…

assassination-classroom1

Imagine that the leaders of Wal-Mart suddenly snapped and created an invincible killing machine out of their famous smiling logo (not that far-fetched now that I think about it). Now imagine that same death machine decided to take a breather and teach students at a Japanese high school. If you were to film such an event, you’d have something similar to director Eiichirô Hasumi’s creation. The end result is a heartwarming tale of global destruction that’s fun for the whole family.

Film Review: ‘Green Room’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 30th, 2015

Jay S., Here…

green-room-movie

As a hobby musician, I’ve played a few sketchy venues.  I’ve had occasions where I had to worry about whether or not I would be paid, and I’ve even had a couple of times where my physical safety held the forefront of my thoughts.  In his latest triumph, “Green Room,” writer-director Jeremy Saulnier (‘Blue Ruin‘) takes ahold of those themes and runs screaming into the woods, dodging bullets, machetes, and outpacing the foaming jowls of kill-hounds.  During the Q&A at Austin’s Fantastic Fest, Mr. Saulnier told the audience about, as a teen, attending Punk-Rock shows and being perplexed and off-put at having to share the event with skinheads and neo-Nazis.  This experience he credited as being the seed that eventually led to the screenplay for his thrilling movie, “Green Room.”

The Keeping Room‘ is a western, albeit a radically new kind of western, let’s call it a feminist western, while we’re at it, imagine a feminist western that brings a combination of ‘Cold Mountain‘ and ‘Straw Dogs‘ to the screen. Set at the tail-end of the Civil War, Southerner Augusta (Brit Marling) encounters two renegade, drunken soldiers (Sam Worthington and Kyle Soller) who are dead-set on a mission of pillage and violence. Afterfending off and escaping an attempted assault she rushes towards safety.

Emma Donoghue wrote what has become a sensational multi-award winner in ‘ROOM‘, then she wrote a screenplay and worked with director Lenny Abrahamson to bring the final product to the big screen. ‘ROOM‘ is incredibly moving, emotional in ways I didn’t really anticipate with an edge-of-your-seat thriller sensation as well.

HBO Renews ‘The Newsroom’ and ‘True Blood’!!!

Hi, Bryan Here….

HBO renews Sorkin’s ‘The Newsroom’ for a second season and ‘True Blood’ for a sixth season.  ‘The Newsroom’ update comes just one day after its second season.  Needless to say, it has tons of viewers and very positive reviews.  And the hit vampire/werewolf/werepanther/witch/monster show has been renewed for a sixth season.  This time, I don’t think Alan Ball will be involved.  It will be interesting to see how the show does with out him running the show.

David Reviews ‘The Bed Sitting Room’ DVD!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 17th, 2012

David, Here….

Firstly, I just want to point out that I enjoy British comedy.  It just has such a different feel than most of what we get on this side of the pond.  So, when I got my hands on this, I was understandably pretty excited despite not knowing anything about the film.  After reading the back of the case and watching the trailer (included on the title screen of the DVD) I was even more excited, it just sounded so absurd!  And… it was.

Now most of you know I am a HUGE fan of Kubrick’ work.  Anything related to the director, I want to read, watch, and cherish.  There was a documentary that premiered at Sundance recently entitled ‘Room 237’.  It is a documentary on the Kubrick’s ‘The Shining’ movie.  Not the one made by his daughter that is shown on the DVD, but rather a different type of documentary that explores the insane conspiracy theories and subtext of the “real meaning” of ‘The Shining’.

THE FILM

Back in 2009, the brilliant filmmaker Sam Raimi journeyed back to his horror roots and made a fun-as-hell horror-comedy film called ‘Drag Me To Hell‘. For those of you who don’t remember who Sam Raimi is, movies like ‘Evil Dead II‘, ‘Army of Darkness‘, ‘The Spider-Man Trilogy‘, and ‘Darkman‘ are some of his accomplishments. Raimi and his brother and frequent collaborator Ivan Raimi had an idea for a horror film called ‘The Curse‘, but when Raimi booked the ‘Spider-Man‘ gig, that film was put on hold for the next decade. After ‘Spider-Man 3‘ was released, Sam and Ivan went quickly back to their idea to work on a low budget horror film again, which turned into ‘Drag Me To Hell’.

Film Review: ‘The Disaster Artist’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 16th, 2017

By now you must know about the “The Room.”  If by some chance you don’t know what it is, I would highly recommend viewing before watching “The Disaster Artist,” although it is by no means required.  Just as a cliff’s note, “The Room” is a cult film known as the best worst movie ever made.  It’s a melodramatic poorly acted mess, but it has hit a chord with enough people to gain midnight movie status, along with audience participation a-la Rocky Horror Picture Show.  It is a beast all of its own and it has drawn the love from college stoners to A list actors alike.  Naturally, in the center of the Venn Diagram of these fanbases, lies James Franco.

Film Review: ‘Battle of the Sexes’!!

by Janet White on Sep 22nd, 2017

Hello Everyone, Janet W. here…

The year was 1972; Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) had just won the US Open. Thrust into the mainstream limelight, emerged into the Women’s Lib movement, and treated as the lesser sex by the world, King breaks free from the bonds of the United States National Lawn Tennis Association. The USNLTA paid the female players considerably less than the male players for illogical reasons like men are the big ticket sellers; men need the money for their families, etc. With her trusted friend and manager, Gladys Heldman (Sarah Silverman), along with her and other female tennis players the face of tennis was forever changed.

4K UHD Review: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 16th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

THE FILM

First off, my favorite Marvel Cinematic Universe film is ‘Guardians of the Galaxy‘. I love the weird, oddball, and sometimes anti-hero characters so much, the dialogue, and the feel of the whole movie, that I really connected to it and enjoyed it on every level. This group of heroes are not the norm and I relish in all their conflicts, endearing moments, and witty banter. That brings us to Vol. 2 that reunites all of our favorite characters as they go on missions to save the galaxy.

Favorite Movie Scene of the Day #15!

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

Every time I watch this scene, I find myself wincing, shrinking in my seat and covering my eyes, as if I’m watching it for the first time. I hate to say it, but I think we’ve all been here before. Maybe not as drastic as this, but some form of this – – we’ve all done it. We’re eight movies into this franchise, which would have you assume that these films would have lost steam, been remade, or have a completely new cast. Favorite Movie Scene of the Day #3!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 22nd, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

Annie Hall + Diane Keaton + khakis

I love Woody Allen movies and I imagine there will be quite a number of scenes in this column from his films. The first one comes from Annie Hall though. This scene just speaks to me so much and I think it’s a perfect capture of two people who were once in love, but still want to be in each other’s lives, even if it can be a bit awkward. Finding something to talk about to pass the uncomfortable time, or seeing new things in your former significant other’s place that make you question what new things they’re into now that you’re gone is delightfully funny to watch.

Here’s a new addition to the Boomstick Comics lineup – Favorite Movie Scene of the Day! If you’ve seen any of my interviews with filmmakers or actors, one questions I never forget to ask is What is your favorite scene in a movie that has always stuck with you? Everyone gives different answers and they are always caught off guard and have some fun answering this particular question. Just look how much fun Keanu Reeves had answering the question. It’s different than answering “What is your favorite movie?”, because it allows you to think to a specific moment in a film that really connected with you that you never seem to forget, quote, cry over, or laugh at. So I hope to bring some excellent scenes from movies that you’ve forgotten or haven’t seen in a long while in hopes of rekindling a relationship of passion with your favorite movies and characters. In 1964, Audrey Hepburn made My Fair Lady, which was met with critical claim and financial success. After all of the chaotic press tours, media coverage, and award shows that followed that film, Hepburn joined the cool, fun film How To Still A Million in 1966 with Peter O’Toole, along with William Wyler as director (Ben-Hur, Roman Holiday, The Best Years of Our Lives). Not exactly a light-weight. How To Still A Million can be compared to Ocean’s 11, The Thomas Crown Affair, or the recent Trance film if it were a comedy and light-hearted.

He hasn’t really been that impressive in other roles because they forced him to be “small” and ‘Whiplash‘ was balls to the wall drama, none of the saccharine, schmaltzy teen love story crept in to that performance and ‘Bleed For This‘ shows why he’s made for the big stories.

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 6th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

THE FILM

Another year, another ‘Rocky‘ movie. Some of you might be saying, “When is enough, enough?” More times than not, you might be right with any string of sequels that goes back the third installment, particularly with the ‘Rocky‘ franchise. Sure, the first ‘Rocky‘ film from 1976 was spectacular, and arguably one of the better movies ever made. It even won a ton of Oscars that year, including Best Picture. ‘Rocky II‘ came shortly after, which was still excellent, but starting with ‘Rocky III‘, things got silly and the films lost some focus. Still, audiences world wide packed theater houses to see the Italian Stallion (Sylvester Stallone) underdog his way up to the top, never quitting and giving his best. It’s a great message.

Texas Frightmare Weekend is billed as the Premier Southwest Horror Convention.  This year they celebrated their 10th anniversary and I was able to attend for the whole weekend for the first time.  Of course, I’ll be “penning” another article about the overall experience after I’m finished writing up everything else, but I must get this one out first.  The reason?   Because I LOVE movies.  A little known fact about the event is that they offer screening opportunities.  It is difficult to choose what to watch between the two rooms, but over the weekend I got to see enough to speculate on a few of them.  Oh, and there will be spoilers.

The Piano.  Schindler’s List. I have seen films about the Holocaust and the invasion of countries by the Nazi regime.  Along comes Woman in Gold a true story about one woman’s fight against Nazi-sympathizing Austria.  Mrs. Maria Altmann (Helen Mirren) loses her sister and within her sister’s belongings finds a postcard of Gustav Klimt’sWoman in Gold” painting.  Shortly after this find, Austria announces their intent to restore stolen artwork to their rightful owners namely the Jewish families who were robbed by the Nazis when they invaded Austria.  Randy (Ryan Reynolds) is a down on his luck attorney who failed at his solo practice.

Bryan’s Best and Worst of 2014 List!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 22nd, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

Wright_39_s_Top_10_Films_of_2014

I can’t believe how fast this year has gone by. 2014 was an interesting year to say the least, most of which was great. Movie-wise, I think 2014 had some excellent films filling its theaters, but of course it had some real stinkers too. Below is my list of the Best and Worst films of 2014 with some added categories down at the bottom. I believe this year I watched over 145 new films, theatrically speaking and it was very difficult to narrow them down from 25. After some chocolate snacks covered in marshmallow cream, I finally had a TOP 10. But when you talk about the Best movies, you have to mention the worst too. My list tends to be a tad bit different from others, but hey, I’m twisted. I highly encourage you to seek out these movies – good or bad and enjoy the rest of your year.

There is a new documentary that is currently being made called ‘Haunters‘, which is being made by Jon Schnitzer. This documentary looks all sorts of fun as it looks to be the ultimate look inside how some of the scariest Haunted Houses are made across the country. I’m not talking about real haunted houses. I’m talking about the fun Haunted Houses that we all go to during the Halloween season. Some are truly scary and some are fairly laughable. ‘Haunters‘ seems to dive into how each haunted house is made, along with the costumes, make up effects, digital effects, and actors who make a living, performing in these scary houses.

If you’re not interested in attending a Comic Con just for the chance to meet a celebrity or buy your body-weight in geeky merchandise, go just for the panels. The interaction between the star and their fans is wonderful. I had the pleasure of sitting in on William Shatner’s panel on Saturday 11-8-14 that included a Q&A with fans. He was a remarkable speaker, very engaging with the audience and truly loved the chance to be there. The ballroom his panel was held in was packed to capacity with every manner of attendee imaginable. When he was introduced, there was an electric buzz in the room that was entirely palpable. The hype was broken only when he was announced as a musician. Once he took the stage, he seemed in his element, comfortable and right at home. He jumped directly into fan questions.

Film Review: ‘Sacrament’!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Oct 23rd, 2014

Hey guys, Jana here,

Screen Shot 2014-10-23 at 5.16.51 PM

Let’s pretend it’s October 31, you decide to see a movie, you approach the ticket counter and utter the most cliche’d line that we all learn as tiny children, “Trick or Treat”. Think about that phrase, it’s not just an open and shut demand for candy, there is always the option for trick. Let’s say the guy selling you a ticket for the movie decided to give you a trick instead of a treat. That’s what watching this film was. ‘Sacrament‘, not to be confused with ‘The Sacrament‘ from last year. While both feature extreme religious cults, that’s where the similarity of the films ends,  one  drinks the Kool-Aid and one stays for dinner….literally.

Hi, MDP Here…

Dean-Ambrose

On a night that was supposed to be all about WWE’s championships, and on a night where he wasn’t even scheduled to appear, the takeaway from Night of Champions is that Dean Ambrose is the coolest. Ambrose had been off for a month after Seth Rollins and Corporate Kane took him out on an episode of Monday Night Raw. Rollins was scheduled to face Roman Reigns on Sunday, but Reigns underwent emergency surgery over the weekend and will be out for several months. While Rollins was gloating in the ring after demanding that the ref declare him the winner via forfeit, Ambrose arrived (via taxi cab; what timing!) and attacked Rollins.

Film Review: ‘Tim’s Vermeer’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 11th, 2014

Hi, Bryan Here….

2013-12-06-TimsVermeer3

I would imagine that only art students or avid art collectors would know the name Vermeer if it was spoken out loud, where the rest of us would have to Google his name and learn about this name. Vermeer is actually a name, well a last name in Johannes Vermeer, who was a great painter in the 1600s. His work is known all over the world and is sought after by royalty, celebrities, and very wealthy business people. What makes Vermeer standout than any other painter from the 1600s? Well that’s an interesting topic and question. It’s such a fascinating subject, that Penn and Teller (the magicians and entertainers) decided to make one of their famous documentaries about it.

Film Review: ‘Her’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 10th, 2014

Hi, Bryan Here…

her_movie.jpg.CROP.promovar-mediumlarge

Usually, the month of January is reserved for films that tend to fall below the less than average category, and are almost always immediately forgettable and tend to leave a bad taste in your mouth like a caramel onion. However, with Spike Jonze’s original and fresh tale on the age old story of finding love in the most unlikely place, ‘Her‘ might be the one of the best films not only to be released in January, but in the last few years. I have no doubt that this beautiful and smart film will win tons of awards as well as make a decent sized dent at the box office by word-of-mouth.

Film Review: ‘The Internship’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 6th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

The-Internship-Wallpaper-01

Much like ‘The Wedding Crashers‘, there is big potential for a successful comedy and tons of gut busting laughs from Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. And just like last time the two were together, we get a bland paint-by-the-numbers comedy that provides only a couple of laughs that is predictable and lacks any real entertainment that lasts more than a couple of seconds. Not making the situation any better, this comedy has a PG-13 rating in order to bring a broader and family friendlier audience to the mix, and the entire movie feels like an ode to Google, more than a comedy. That being said, Vaughn and Wilson should still draw a decent opening weekend.

What a great season finale of “The Walking Dead”! There is a lot to talk  about between Rick vs the Governor, Carl vs. Rick and of course all the people that died. Lets get to it!  The scene begins with a pulsating pupil of an eye. As the camera pulls out, you realize it is The Governors eye and that he is in the process of beating up someone. He is talking to the person about all the risks he took with killing the biters. A man replies that he was going to use them on whoever showed up. The Governor replied that he was and that eight of his men died. The Governor then takes another swing and the camera points to Milton taking the blow. The Governor states about how he kept him safe and feed. Milton replies with at as long as he turns the other way. Milton asks him what would his daughter think of the man he has become.

Film Review: ‘Admission’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 20th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

url-3

Tina Fey and Paul Rudd star in this rocky comedy from ‘American Pie‘ director Paul Weitz, which jumps between being a heartfelt drama and gross out comedy far too often. Based on the novel of the same name by Jean Hanff Korelitz and adapted to a screenplay by Karen Croner, ‘Admission‘ tells a tale on the ins and outs of being accepted into college, especially one of the most notable and best colleges in America. Even with top notch talent rounding out this little film, I only expect modern returns at the box office due to its subject matter.

Bryan’s ‘John Carter’ 3D Bluray Review!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 15th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here…

In my opinion, ‘John Carter’ is one fun ride.  I really think the executives over at Disney had no idea how to market this movie.  Of course, it showed during its theatrical run, because it didn’t make near enough as everyone thought it would.  ‘John Carter’ cost around $200 million to make and is a story of epic proportions.  The ‘John Carter’ 3D Bluray is one to own if you love action adventure films.  Don’t let the critics persuade you not to like this film, because in fact, you will enjoy it.

Hi, Bryan Here….

Sheldon Candis’s LUV is one of the strangest yet better coming-of-age films I have seen.  Above all else, this film excels in its character development, which is probably why Candis was able to secure an A-List cast.  LUV is set in Baltimore , which undoubtedly will prompt comparisons to the HBO hit series The Wire, particularly because of the similarities in characters and story.  But where LUV differs, is when it makes its characters come first before anything else –even the storyline.

HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones’ series is one of the better series to come out in the last 20 years.  Based on the books by George R.R. Martin which are called ‘A Song of Fire and Ice’, this series adaptation is top notch in every aspect.  If you haven’t seen HBO’s ‘ Game of Thrones’ or read George R.R. Martin’s novels, then I highly suggest you do a few things.  First, purchase this bluray set.  It will be the best purchase you will make this year so far.  Second, set your DVR’s to record this series.  And third, get the books.  This is truly one of the best HBO series that has been released on bluray.

Bryan Gets Injected With ‘Venom’!!! (A Blu-Ray Review)

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 21st, 2011

Hi Bryan Here…..

After watching ‘Venom’ I could only think back to the hit horror film ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’.  Upon further research, the director of ‘Venom’ Jim Gillespe actually made ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’.  In addition, Kevin Williamson was a producer of the film.  Williamson wrote all the ‘Scream’ films.  So there are tons of nuances from those franchise of films that are put into ‘Venom’ which comes across as a mix between the two franchises that is set in a cajun Louisiana swamp type setting.  If you enjoyed ‘Scream’ and or ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ then you will definitely enjoy this thrill ride.  Despite all of its over the top sequences, it is actually a fun film.
