Hi everyone, Bryan here…

It’s that time of the year again, where we induct musicians and singers into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Over the past few years, the term Rock & Roll is used loosely, because according to this list, some of these artists are not Rock & Roll at all. Still, this is the voting period and you can vote on who deserves to be inducted, which will air on HBO.

I think Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is going for a world record to star in the most movies ever, because he has signed on to star in yet another film. It’s really not shocking that it will be a big budget action-movie, but this one will be set in China and be called ‘Skyscraper‘.

A newly engaged couple have a breakdown in an isolated area and must pay a call to the bizarre residence of Dr. Frank-N-Furter. It’s a simple premise, but ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show‘ made such an impression and is a permanent part of our pop culture society that a remake was inevitable. This remake falls into the live category that networks have been pushing since Carrie Underwood warbled through ‘The Sound of Music‘ live in 2013.

We’ve known for a while now that Hollywood was trying to remake ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show‘. We’ve seen various iterations on the cult icon film from ‘Glee‘ to ‘The Simpsons‘, and even recently, MTV and Fox is trying to put their spin on the classic musical. Fox’s version is gaining steam though as Laverne Cox (‘Orange is the New Black) has just been cast as Frank-N-Furter, which was originally played by Tim Curry in the original film and stage play.

WWE: If you Smell What ‘The Rock’ is Cookin’!

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

Good news, to the millions….and MILLIONS of Rock fans. The Rock has been busy as of lately. Well, I think he’s always busy, as he has about a dozen movies coming out, his HBO show, and too many to count upcoming projects, including a remake of ‘Big Trouble in Little China‘. We’re still waiting on him to play a live-action Johnny Bravo, but it looks like WWE has moved The Rock from their alumni website to their active roster.

You know, the one that let 3 people play at once, each being a different giant monster that terrorized a city with the clever thought of “Smash. Bash. Okay, let me get this straight. Out of all the remakes Hollywood wants to do, why are we tackling ‘Big Trouble in Little China‘? I really hope this is a mere rumor, but The Wrap is reporting it, and it seems some industry professionals are confirming this. But yes, 20th Century Fox wants to remake the iconic 80s film that starred Kurt Russell and was directed by John Carpenter.

This whole re-make thing is nothing short of annoying when one of your favorite movies is zeroed in on as the next target. Another of my favorite musicals will be going under the equivalent of a plastic surgeons knife. The goal is to freshen the story while leaving the overall appearance the same. All to often in cosmetic surgeries the end product is completely unrecognized, the same thing happens with retooled shows. Needless to say my first words were ‘Damnit Janet’ when I read that ‘Rocky Horror Picture Show‘ was the project in Fox’s crosshairs.

I know what you’re thinking…another Hercules film?  The Greek myth of the legendary son of Zeus and a mortal woman, Alcmene.  Brett Ratner’s Hercules is a different kind of animal.  At first, Hercules opens a lot like The Scorpion King.  A nephew of Hercules (Dwayne Johnson), Iolaus (Reece Ritchie), is bound and about to be killed.  Iolaus tells his would be murderers tales of the victories of Hercules.  Enter Hercules through heavy plumes of smoke, which is quite close to Mathayus emerging from the soot of the fireplace in The Scorpion King.

Check Out the ‘Hercules’ Trailer, Starring The Rock!!

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

As we reported late last year, there will be two films that feature Hercules this year. One came out at the start of the year, which was directed by Renny Harlin, and wasn’t too good. You can read that review HERE. The other one has me more excited, but not by much. I’m not a fan of director Brett Ratner (‘Rush Hour‘), but this film will star Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson as Hercules, so that has me intrigued. I don’t care what it is, but The Rock is so charismatic on screen, I’d watch him in anything.

Here is our 32nd episode of ‘The Multi-Media Men‘, and we are back from a two week hiatus from covering the Dallas Film Festival.  We recorded this 32nd podcast on Easter Sunday morning in Dallas, TX, and were missing a couple of regulars. However, we were joined by Susan Kamyab of ‘This Chix Flix‘ and ‘Irving Community Television‘ this weekend and she made an excellent addition to the podcast. And since we are back from our small break, what better way to celebrate than with one of our infamous ReCast segments. We went ahead and did it. We ReCast ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show‘, which is one of the best films of all time. There is no way we can replace any of the actors aboard here, but we know that MTV wants to remake it and in this day and age, it is more likely to happen than not. So here are some of our suggestions on who should play which role? Do you agree with us?  And please let us know what you think by going to our FACEBOOK page, which you should visit to catch up on all the latest information. And don’t forget to visit iTunes and Stitcher to subscribe to our podcast. Enjoy the show.

Yes folks, that is correct.  The Rock will be starring in a teddy bear film, but not the sequel to the Seth MacFarlane vehicle ‘Ted‘. This one is different.  And you will be surprised on where the idea came from.  So we all have heard famous stories on how some movies were written, some were from the idea of a child and some were written on a cocktail napkin while sitting at a bar.  But this time, the story for this film was based on an image.  An image made popular by the popular websites Imgur and Reddit.  I couldn’t make this up if I tried.

The Rock is Finally a BADASS Again…

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 7th, 2010

As it pleases me to say, that THE ROCK has taken a break from his family entertainment films to give us fans a hardcore movie that he should be in.  I am a huge fan of THE ROCK, and I will pretty much see anything he is in.  Even the family friendly films.

Now we get a move with him called “Faster”.

“After 10 years in prison, Driver has a singular focus – to avenge the murder of his brother during the botched bank robbery that led to his imprisonment. With two men on his trail – a veteran cop just days from retirement, and a young egocentric hitman with a flair for the art of killing and a newfound worthy opponent, the hunter is also the hunted. Faster, starring Dwayne Johnson, Billy Bob Thornton and Oliver Jackson-Cohen.”

I cannot wait for this.

Some people love his films. Some hate his films. No matter which side of the spectrum you’re on, you have to agree that every one of Terrence Malick’s films look exquisitely beautiful. With movies like ‘Tree of Life‘, ‘Knight of Cups‘, ‘The Thin Red Line‘, ‘Badlands‘, and ‘Days of Heaven‘, you can’t help but become entranced in the story, characters, and visual spectacle of Malick’s filmmaking process. His past few films have mostly shown a variety of characters who rarely say anything on screen, but instead narrate the movie as it goes along, giving a better visual masterpiece of cinema than a dialogue driven movie.

Margot Robbie and director David Ayer are back together, the last time this happened, the world received ‘Suicide Squad‘. The next venture is even more of a daunting task, and that is ‘Gotham City Sirens‘. I’ll assume that not everyone eats, sleeps and breathes DC comics and I’ll slow it down. DC is the comic book world I prefer to live in, I like dark, deep, broody, melancholy atmospheres, and I’m not entirely certain the sun ever hits the center of Gotham City, but I’m ok with that. New music releases from now defunct bands or artists that have passed on isn’t really a new thing. We’ve seen enough posthumous releases that nothing should really shock us anymore, right? Every now and them a producer comes up with a mind-blowing vision to have current artists cover titles from an artist’s catalog to give it a face lift while still keeping a little something of the original artist. Covers are a hard tightrope to walk, you know? Either there’s no way in hell you can live up to the original hype or the new version sounds so good you make everyone feel guilty for liking it more than the former.

Have the Oscars lost a little of their glittery oomph that make it a night of royalty for Hollywood’s best and brightest? Maybe. One year it will be utterly entertaining, original and exciting, the next it feels forced, stale, boring and becomes the night that NEVER ends early enough. This loyalty is not spent on McGregor, alone, but a handful of actors/actresses and directors make up my little circle. One of those directors is Martin Scorsese. If he made it, chances are I’m going to love it. I’ve never hidden the fact that Streep gives me major lady-wood and I’d buy a ticket to watch her read the phone book. One of my favorite flicks to watch her shine in is ‘Mama Mia‘. It looks like DreamWorks Animation wants more ‘Rocky & Bullwinkle‘ material, because they just announced that they will be releasing an all-new short film featuring the classic characters in animation form sometime in 2014. I’m willing to be it will be in March, since DreamWorks also announced that their new animated feature ‘Mr. Peabody and Sherman‘ will be released  then as well.

In what might be the best news of the day, MGM has set director Ryan Coogler along with actor Michael B. Jordan in developing a spinoff ‘Rocky‘ film called ‘Creed‘. Don’t worry, Sly Stallone will reprise Rocky again as a retired boxer, now trainer for Apollo Creed’s grandson, which will be played by Jordan. Coogler and Jordan most recently collaborated on the amazing film ‘Fruitvale Station‘, which you can read that review HERE.

Bryan Reviews ‘Rock Of Ages’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 14th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here…

‘Rock Of Ages’ is an 80’s Rock n’ Roll orgy turned up to eleven.  I have no doubt that 80’s rock music fans will eat this up and rock themselves out in the theater.  This musical is based on Chris D’ Arienzo’s Broadway play and has been adapted to the big screen in a major and hilarious way with an allstar cast.  Plus they got Adam Shankman (they guy who directed the remake of ‘Hairspray’) to direct this 80’s rock opus.  ‘Rock Of Ages’ is over-the-top ridiculous, campy, silly, but one hell of a good time.  You’ll leave the theater singing your favorite Twisted Sister song and wanting to change your hair into a mullet.

‘Rocky Horror Picture Show’ Remake: NO. JUST NO!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 23rd, 2011

The Bishop Charlotte Reporting….

NOT OKAY.

NOT.

OKAY.

Do you remember the first time you saw The Rocky Horror Picture Show? Walked into a theater, got the red V marked on your forehead, received your baggie containing your tools. Maybe, like me, you got to go up on stage and be the bride, throw the bouquet that Janet catches. You were nervous, excited, and sure that the experience was going to change your life.

On a cool and slightly humid evening at Dallas’ historic Kessler Theatre in North Oak Cliff, music fans of all types crammed into the intimate venue like sardines to see Wanda Jackson, the proclaimed ‘Queen of Rockabilly’ give it all she literally had.

The show, which was expected to begin with her set around 9:00pm, didn’t start until well after 10:30pm, due to a recent case of mild laryngitis the legendary singer had  been battling. Most fans were certainly eager for the show to begin, however the crowd appeared to be quite patient and understanding with Jackson as she made her way through her setlist, something I haven’t seen much in Dallas concert-going crowds these last few years.

Rock n Roll Hall of Fame nominees are…..

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 29th, 2010

Ladies and Gents, your 2011 Rock n Roll Hall of Fame nominees are first-timers Tom Waits, Bon Jovi, Alice Cooper, Donovan, and Neil Diamond (Jewish Elvis), along with previously snubbed artists Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, J. Geils Band, Donna Summer, Chic, Dr. John, Laura Nyro, Joe Tex, Darlene Love, and Chuck Willis. (Via Rolling Stone) In order to be eligible, an artist must have put out his or her first recording in 1985 or before. And since Tom Waits put out his debut single in 1973, that means it took him 12 years to be nominated. Tom Waits is my favorite musician…. well Tom and Michael Jackson.

The lucky few who get enough votes from industry insiders to make it into the Hall this year will be announced in December. The induction ceremony is set to take place March 14 in New York City.

‘First Man’ Film Review #2!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 10th, 2018

Anytime I see a movie about space the technology seems effortless. Even in space disaster movies, the main character is one button or airlock away from safety. The technology and engineering are always #15 on the list of most movies set in space. Even movies like Apollo 13 romanticize space travel to a large degree and gloss over the real work it takes to even get up there. First Man takes a different approach to launch humans into space by making every single aspect of the space program of the 60s be, frankly, terrifying.

Film Review: ‘The Meg’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 10th, 2018

If you watched the trailer for The Meg in which a 90-foot shark appears to stalk a wedding party because the bride’s tiny dog jumped in for a swim while ‘Somewhere Beyond the Sea’ blares over the speakers and hated it, then The Meg is not for you. The Meg is continuing a growing trend of low-tier Hollywood movies knowing exactly what they are. It is big, loud, preposterous, silly, funny, and so over the top, it hurts. It leans into these descriptors so hard that I found myself sort of admiring the fact that everyone involved was like, “We’re gonna see how ridiculous we can make this and the audience will either smile or their eyes will roll out of their head.” I found myself chuckling at the absurdity of it all, but not in a malicious way. I enjoyed the movie but will never see it again.

Film Review: ‘Skyscraper’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 12th, 2018

Summer blockbusters have been a staple for all of us for many years in the movie theater. We can expect, a ton of action, one-liners, witty actors, explosions, feel good endings, and sometimes monsters, zombies, aliens, robots, or a combination of all four. These big summer blockbusters usually lack an award winning story or break-through performances, but it makes up for that in sheer entertainment and high stakes. When you bring in a former charismatic WWE Champion with Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson to play the “every character from our favorite 80s-90s action movies, you’re gonna get something wild, fun, and nothing short of spectacular, which is why I’m hear to say that ‘Skyscraper‘ is the big budget summer blockbuster you’ve always wanted.

Let me preface this by saying that I don’t have the talent or patience to create my own movie. I know it takes a ton of hard work to make something from scratch. Blu-ray Review: ‘A Wrinkle In Time’!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 30th, 2018

THE FILM

(This film portion was written by Beka Perlstein!)

I really wanted to like A Wrinkle in Time more than I did. I gave it my best shot, but in the end, the only thing I can honestly say was that it had lots of great colors. Perhaps it was my high expectations for a Disney film, plus Oprah Winfrey and Mindy Kaling that set me up for disappointment, but regardless, I was left feeling let down in a film that I knew practically nothing about. I have never read the 1962 Madeleine L’Engle novel, so I honestly had no clue what the plot was but whatever, it’s Disney, it’s gonna be good. Well…

Film Review: ‘Rampage’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Apr 11th, 2018

There really isn’t any point in denying that Dwayne The Rock Johnson is the biggest movie star in Hollywood right now, but he might also be the best. Nobody, except early Will Smith, can star in, sell, and market a movie the way he can. His power to entertain audiences with ridiculous premises is undeniable. Rampage is stupid, big, and insane, but it’s also obnoxiously entertaining and a joy to watch.

Film Review: ‘Blockers’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Apr 6th, 2018

Every five years it is mandatory that Hollywood releases a coming of age story of teens trying to get laid. Animal House, Porkys, Revenge of the Nerds, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, all the way up to Superbad. Some are classics and some are just a good time at the movies but the formula almost always works. The formula works for Blockers which is a really funny hour and a half with a few new twists to allow the tried and true premise to stand out.

Favorite Movie Scene of the Day #18!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 24th, 2018

Freddy Krueger has become a household name since he debuted in A Nightmare on Elm Street in 1984. The bastard son of 100 maniacs hasn’t only scared us, but has made us laugh and given us brilliant, yet cheesy one-liners over the years. When compared to the likes of other movie killers like Jason Vorhees and Michael Myers, Krueger has a big personality where he likes to taunt his victims with vicious pranks and insults that come with the best puns and wit. Instead of just chopping up people with a machete or knife, Krueger had the most inventive kills throughout his films as actor Robert Englund always portrayed this burnt up boogeyman with vigor, style, and dynamic comedy. This particular Favorite Movie Scene of the Day comes from A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors from 1987.

You’re never too old for this shit as Warner Bros. is talking with everyone about a new ‘Lethal Weapon‘ film that brings back the original cast. Wrestlemania 34 is less than 6 months away with Survivor Series and Royal Rumble just around the corner. The world of pro-wrestling has been around for many years and has certainly seen its ups and downs, most noticeably being the WWE. There have been many promotions through the decades, which have made a lot of people very successful and it continues to this day. At some point down the road though, there was one company that surpassed everyone by leaps and bounds and brought the pro-wrestling arena into the mainstream. Of course I’m talking about World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), or the artist formally known as World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in its teenage angst years. For a long while, there were two major companies that featured the best of the best in the pro-wrestling world. WWE and WCW. They didn’t play well together at all on and off screen.

4K UHD Review: Alien: Covenant!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 25th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

THE FILM

We live in a time where all of our favorite films and television programs from decades ago are getting sequels, rebooted, and remade. The ALIEN franchise that we have all come to love over the years has had its share of revamps. Luckily, the original filmmaker Ridley Scott, who made ALIEN back in 1979 came back a few years ago and made an early sequel to the franchise with PROMETHEUS. Clearly, Scott isn’t done telling stories in this horrifying universe, and we now have a sequel with ALIEN: COVENANT, which breathes new life into this stale franchise and promises more sequels and even more scares. What we loved about the original ALIEN is certainly present in a lot of COVENANT.

Vin Diesel is Remaking Miami Vice!

I guess since NBC is a fast sinking ship down into the ocean, it has to reboot its own vintage TV shows. This time, it’s with Miami Vice, which was a hit action-crime television series in the 1980s that spawned a huge fandom, music, and fashion. In 2006, director Michael Mann remade Miami Vice on the big screen with Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell. Favorite Movie Scene of the Day #3!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 22nd, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

Annie Hall + Diane Keaton + khakis

I love Woody Allen movies and I imagine there will be quite a number of scenes in this column from his films. The first one comes from Annie Hall though. This scene just speaks to me so much and I think it’s a perfect capture of two people who were once in love, but still want to be in each other’s lives, even if it can be a bit awkward. Finding something to talk about to pass the uncomfortable time, or seeing new things in your former significant other’s place that make you question what new things they’re into now that you’re gone is delightfully funny to watch.

Film Review: BAYWATCH!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 23rd, 2017

Dan M., here….

baywatccast

We need to get one thing straight as we start this review. Baywatch is not a movie to be judged on it’s plot. This movie exists in the same realm as Horrible Bosses, Spy, We’re The Millers, 21 Jump Street, & Neighbors. It has just enough plot so that it can get from joke to joke or gag to gag as efficiently as possible. It succeeds in this regard and has a really high “joke landing” percentage. More importantly, as a vehicle for unbelievably attractive people to let loose and be funny, Baywatch goes above and beyond. It is a showcase for these actors to show they’re really, really funny.

Dan M. Gives His Thoughts on ‘Fate of the Furious’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Apr 16th, 2017

Dan M., here….

fate-of-the-gurious-952x563

Fast & Furious: Civil War

(Feel free so scroll to the bottom if you’re here to talk Jason Statham.)

After the death of Paul Walker and the 7th film there has been lots of speculation as to where the Fast & Furious franchise would go and the 8th movie definitively answers that question: Anywhere it damn well pleases. By the end of The Fate of the Furious, the loudest, most insane, and dumbest (in a good way) entry in the series, the stage is set for 100 more of these films and I’d sign up for 99 of them. While many franchises are working as hard as they can to justify spinoffs and team up films, the Fast & Furious put itself in a position to justify a number of spinoffs. As a film universe goes, Fast & Furious is behind only Marvel.

I saw The Fast and The Furious when I was 14 or 15. As someone who grew up watching Point Break on VHS and other 80s/90s action movies it was right in my wheel house. I have never been a car guy but I still remember that summer talking with my friends about Honda Civics, Nos, and spoilers that we’d all be getting when we turned 16. The first movie is a step by step remake of Point Break, right down to letting the “bad guy” go at the end with “I owe you a 10 second car” instead of “Vaya Con Dios.” It stared two relatively unknowns in Paul Walker and Vin Diesel who will never be confused with Daniel Day Lewis but were born to play these parts. Ultimately was a fun summer popcorn movie that no one thought they’d hear from again, let alone turn into an almost 4 billion dollar franchise.

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (1991) is in the top 2 Disney animated movies of all-time. I’ll only allow The Lion King, which has a live action version due in 2019 or 2020, to be ranked ahead of it. This isn’t a debate. These are facts. Beauty and the Beast (animated) is a masterpiece from songs to characters, which is why I loved that this new live-action movie stayed so true to the animated version. It was an extremely enjoyable two hours with some really great moments and I look forward to seeing it again.
