Bryan’s Review of ‘Taken 2’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 4th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

Of course they would make a sequel to ‘Taken’.  The film made over $226 million dollars with a budget $200 million smaller than its gross.  Did they need to make a sequel?  No, they didn’t.  But, since the weird popularity of Liam Neeson as of recently, it was inevitable that the studio make a sequel.  Neeson has sort of taken on the persona that Chuck Norris or Nic Cage has of the past few years.  Meaning that now, Neeson is one true ultimate badass, that fights aliens, robots, kills every bad guy everywhere in the world, and is a jedi.  ‘Taken 2’ takes all of this power, and pretty much forces it into one film. As my friend said, “No, ‘Taken 2’ is not good, but on a Nic Cage scale, it’s a 9.  And I have to agree with that.

Hi, Bryan Here….

20th Century Fox has just released a new trailer for ‘Taken 2’, and they are wanting you to search for clues on twitter to unlock an exclusive new scene from the upcoming film.  “Liam Neeson is back in Taken 2, in theaters October 5. Liam Neeson returns as Bryan Mills, the retired CIA agent who stopped at nothing to save his abducted daughter in TAKEN. When he is targeted by a vengeance-seeking crime-lord, Bryan must employ his “particular set of skills” to protect his family against an army out to kill them.”

Hi, Bryan Here….

‘Taken 2’ will find you. ‘Taken 2’ will kill you. Liam Neeson returns as the heroic dad/ex-government agent from 2008’s smash-hit success, ‘Taken’. This looks all sorts of ridiculous as the director is Olivier Megaton who directed ‘Transporter 3’.   Just reading that out loud makes me laugh.  Enjoy the trailer.

Hi, Bryan Here….

liam-neeson-taken-22-600x371

I laughed out loud when I received this information.  I think we have said all we need to say with these ‘Taken‘ movies. They always make decent money, but are never any really good. But that has never stopped Hollywood. So, in true fashion, we are getting a third ‘Taken‘ movie and Liam Neeson is finishing his contract negotiations to the tune of $20 million.

Film Review: ‘Tomb Raider’ (2018)!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 14th, 2018

In 2013 Square Enix came out with a new Tomb Raider game, a reboot of the original game that was released in 1996. Now it’s 2018 and Square Enix is giving us a movie based on the reboot game, and is itself a reboot of a film series from 2001. Still with me?  I know, time is a flat circle.

Dan Moran’s Top 12 Movies of 2017 Plus Extras!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 4th, 2018

I saw 75 movies this year and I still have 3-4 left to finish up over the next few weeks. I haven’t seen The Post, Call Me By Your Name, or Phantom Thread yet. Phantom Thread is the only regret I have but it doesn’t come out until mid-January and I like to finish my list before first week of January ends. A few special awards before my top 12.

Jana’s Best of 2017!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jan 1st, 2018

Hey guys, Jana here,

I know these “Best of 2017” lists should technically be published in 2017, but why would I start 2018 any differently than I lived the majority of my adult life: Procrastinating and underachieving. What can I say? That’s my wheelhouse.

For a year that put a spotlight on some of the shittiest behavior by some of the Hollywood elite, it was actually a good year for TV and movies. I didn’t limit myself in number because as I moved on with the brackets, I felt like I was making ‘Sophie’s Choice‘ on some of these, so they’re all getting in! I’m feeling my inner-Oprah here, You’ve made the list! You made the list! EVERYBODY made the list!! In order to spare myself any arguments, I’m stating up front that my picks for the “Best of 2017” are not edited in regards to scandal or hideous human behavior.

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

It’s that time of the year again, where we induct musicians and singers into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Over the past few years, the term Rock & Roll is used loosely, because according to this list, some of these artists are not Rock & Roll at all. Still, this is the voting period and you can vote on who deserves to be inducted, which will air on HBO.

WWE: Money in the Bank 2017 Predictions!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 16th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

WWE_MITB_2017_Poster

Strung 20 feet high over the center of squared circle, there hangs a metal briefcase with a contract inside. That contract guarantees one WWE superstar a match at anytime, anywhere for the biggest championship in the business. On July 18th in 2010, WWE held their first ever Money in the Bank PPV held in Kansas City, which was met with an abundant amount of praise. The WWE superstars must climb a very tall ladder and unhook the briefcase to win the match. There are no rules, no disqualifications, and all weapons and interferences are legal.

Film Review #2: Wonder Woman!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 31st, 2017

Dan M., here….

Wonder-Woman-Diana-in-the-trenches

Let’s cut to the chase, Wonder Woman is great and one of the best modern superhero origin movies ever made. It deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as the original Superman, Batman Begins, Iron Man, etc. It is a nearly flawless introduction to a truly interesting character who cannot only carry her own film but will hopefully help carry future DC films the way Iron Man does with Marvel ones.

Favorite Films of 2016!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 30th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

blake-lively-and-the-shark-the-shallows-39717776-1000-544

The end of 2016 is here, which means everyone’s Top 10 list is out already or getting ready to be released. I’m not going to do a Top 10 in order again this year, because there are just so many amazing films I feel so passionate about, that it is difficult to rank them. If you think this is a weak year of films, then you are surely mistaken. I will say that most of the big budget blockbusters this year were duds, but the indie films were nothing short of amazing. So below is the list of films that I truly loved this year. These films will be ones that I watch over and over again, and you should to. I watched 254 films that were released this year (Yes, I counted) and survived to tell the tale. As always, please let me know if any of your favorite films made my list. Enjoy!

You can CLICK the titles of each movie where you can purchase the Blu-rays too. Hooray!

Many movies are cast with celebrities who bring fans into the theater. Arrival boasts a very distinguished cast, including Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Forest Whitaker. 4K UHD Review: ‘Now You See Me 2’!

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

817wvxtxusl-_sl1500_

THE FILM

This film review portion was written by Beka Perlstein of Boomstick Comics.

Life is all about the long game. ‘Now You See Me 2‘ pulls you in from the very beginning and quickly wraps you up in a fun game of cat and mouse with none other than The Four Horsemen. This quirky group of magicians is back from the first flick with one major improvement- Lizzy Caplan has replaced Isla Fisher as the token chick, playing Lula May. She’s funny, spunky and the perfect addition to the otherwise all male ensemble.

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

Texas-Chainsaw-2-Blu-ray

THE FILM

The original ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre‘ is one of the best horror films of all time. It still holds that title to this day. One thing most people don’t realize though is that the original film was made in such a way to evoke terror and horror, that it was filmed in such a manner as to show almost not gore, blood, or violence. It was all left off-screen for the most part. In return, this was a low-budget independent horror film that was fast-paced, horrific, and wildly entertaining, if not scary-as-hell. It truly is one of the perfect horror movies. some twelve years later, the original director Tobe Hooper came back and directed a sequel titled ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre II‘.

We also discuss the importance of Record Store Day, how Record companies decide on what to release, and how the whole process works.  It was a fun and lively interview for sure. Film Review: ‘Zoolander 2’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 10th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

zoolander

It’s been fifteen years since we saw Derek Zoolander perform on stage in the world of male fashion modeling. That first film, directed by Ben Stiller himself was a brilliant and hilarious satire on the fashion modeling world with a little bit of action and silliness packed in at every corner. ‘Zoolander‘ and many of its characters became instant cult icons. Even many lines of dialogue are still quoted today in everyday life from the first film. Stiller himself has said he’s wanted to do a sequel for the past several years now, but nothing has come together, but one script made it through and everyone signed back on for ‘Zoolander 2‘.

TLC. Tender, loving, Care. That’s not the case when we’re talking about WWE by any stretch of the means. TLC in the WWE universe means Tables, ladders, chairs, all of which are used to take down each other in the ring. Some of the most memorable matches in WWE history have been TLC matches with WWE superstars sacrificing life and limb, falling 50 feet in the air into the hard concrete or a folding table, only to be hit by a steel chair or a steel ladder. TLC matches basically mean that there are no rules. All is “legal”, even the kitchen sink, title belt, and even a trombone in some cases.

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 11th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

landscape-1435513480-my-big-fat-greek-wedding

It’s odd that it has taken this long for a sequel to come out for this. Sure, there was a short-lived television show, but that’s because most of the original cast and crew did NOT return. ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding‘ cost $5 million to make and was produced by Tom Hanks himself. This little romantic comedy ended up making $369 million dollars in the box office. Now if that isn’t a mega hit, I don’t know what is.

WWE: Hell In A Cell 10/25/2015 Recap!!

Angelic Heel once more…

Hell in a Cell is known as the most brutal structure in the WWE. No other match brings with it the sense of foreboding at the mere mention of its name. The WWE Universe waited in anticipation as the Pay Per View that bore the name of the most dreaded match unfolded before them (shown on the WWE Network for the low low monthly rate of $9.99 or free for the first month #BetterThanNetflix) The night saw every Championship defended, as well as honor defended and legends put to rest. The night was filled with ups and downs that kept one guessing and in the end, the WWE delivered as the most demonic structure in sports entertainment lived up to its hype. Did you miss it? THE FILM

By the time 1990 came around, Martin Scorsese had already made several masterpieces in film, which continue to be praised and talked about to this day. With the likes of ‘Raging Bull‘, ‘Taxi Driver‘, and ‘The Last Waltz‘, we all knew that Scorsese was one of the finest filmmakers and storytellers around. Even with just those three previous films mentioned, you’d know you were in for a treat when Scorsese wanted to show you something. Then 1990 came around and Scorsese once again changed the film community with a movie called ‘Goodfellas‘, which was his big foray into the whole mafia genre.

Comic Con: Dallas Fan Days 2015!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 9th, 2015

Hillary T., Here…

cc011

As a fangirl, I love comics and dressing up. I love being someone else for one day and let’s not lie, Comic Con is my mother ship. This weekend was no exception. I spent two days basking the glory and adoration that was formerly Sci-Fi Expo and is now Fan Days 2.0! It’s my family, and walking through the doors of the Irving Convention Center is always like being at home. It is very much like a space ship or the Sandcrawler from ‘Star Wars’, with its four levels, an over powering awning, and yet, when the parking attendant took mine and Taylor’s (lead camera) money, we were excited and ready to get out of the car and start mingling with everyone and see what Fan Days 2015 had to offer. I decided to go ahead and dress up, because hey, who doesn’t like it when press looks like someone else? My costume of choice? Totally obscure and amazing! I was ready to go as Special Agent Dale Cooper, from Twin Peaks. I even brought along a thermos of “Damn fine coffee,” and a bag of donuts. Dead Laura Palmer would be waiting for me at the convention, for sure!

Good things always come to those who wait, and the last RAW of 2014 was a VERY good thing. WWE Hall of Famer, Edge, and his BFF the Charismatic Superstar, Christian, were the guest hosts to ring out the year for those with the benefit of flash photography.  The evening totally reeked of awesomeness as we saw champions fighting champions, championships on the line, long anticipated debuts and prayed for returns.  It was an historic night.  So let’s get this party started and see what the final RAW of the year had in store for the WWE Universe!

2015 Disney Film Release Dates With Trailers!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Dec 30th, 2014

Hey guys, Jana here,

star-wars-disney-570x307

While the world is focusing on auld lang syne and bringing 2014 to a close, Disney is pointedly looking to the future or “To infinity and beyond!” as Buzz Lightyear would say. Walt Disney Studios has given us a wide list of release dates for 2015 including the first Star Wars since the mouse has taken ownership. It’s a big lineup and will, no doubt, bring in a wega-payday for the company. In the last year, three films, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy‘, ‘Maleficent‘ and ‘Captain America Winter Soldier‘ brought in over $700 million world-wide on their own. It stands to reason they can expect the same from 2015. Let’s kick it off with some animation!

Angi S., Here….

RAW_1126_Photo_264-3289282083

It’s that time of year again. When we all gather round with those we care about and watch the special Christmas edition of WWE’s RAW from Minneapolis, Minnesota! Trees, lights and cheer paired with mayhem, chaos and insanity were the order of the evening. Like so many presents we have received in our life time, we saw things that made us go this is awesome, and others that made us go what the hell did I just witness? Either way, we were just grateful to spend the time with the superstars we loved and the ones we wished we really could not see. What fun was to be had and what was bad? Let’s rip into this shiny box of holiday spirit that is the December 22, 2014 RAW!

WWE: Raw Review December 15th, 2014!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 17th, 2014

Angi S., Here…

Y2J_Heyman

Just 24 hours after the TLC (and Stairs) pay per view, RAW IS JERICHO! In Detroit, MI, the WWE Universe is ready to witness the Ayatollah of Rock and Rollah as interim General Manager and do his best to manage the chaos that has become the WWE’s flagship program in the absence of the Authority. The night promised to be intense as the fall out of the previous evening was hanging over the arena (looking oddly like a steel cage). How would the Best in the World at What He Does fair with such a daunting task?  Let’s find out as I give my thoughts and opinions on WWE’s Dec. 15th edition of RAW!

Jana’s Best/Worst of 2014!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Dec 15th, 2014

Hey guys, Jana here,

PicMonkey Collage

It’s been a big year for the entertainment world. Netflix’s initial push to bring movie-theater worthy films straight to streaming customers and bypassing the big screen altogether set off a chain of deals that will take those fresh releases and push them directly into homes allowing us to bypass a $15.00 soda, but denying us the $20.00 popcorn you can only get at the theater. Then came the deluge of series and movies being made for exclusive run with everyone from Netflix, Amazon to Crackle and everything in between. Top that off with the huge breach of privacy Sony experienced. New releases were flooded onto P2P sharing sites and private emails from the film company’s big wigs that show us how the infrastructure of Sony really works, not to mention what those involved really think of some of their superstars.

Hey guys, Jana here,

MV5BODAyMzg4OTI5OF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwOTk0MzU2MzE@._V1_SX214_AL_

Hot Tub Time Machine‘ (2010) was a brilliant walk down memory lane, of course that walk was in the most irreverent way possible, but it was glorious. John Cusack, Craig Robinson and Rob Corddry were seamless best friends, the friendship was believable, and didn’t feel like we were watching actors. I adored that film and still laugh uproariously when I re-watch it. A big part of what brought success with the first film is the relationship the three actors had with one another. Not trying to minimize Clark Duke’s part in any way, but he wasn’t as tight to the group as the others were.

Film Review: ‘Dead Snow 2’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 29th, 2014

Paul N., Here…

dead_snow_01

Some films are destined to become Oscar fodder. They are created, carefully crafted, to become instant nominees for the next award show. From the concept and design to the casting choices, nothing is left to chance. The same could be said for cult classics. Some films achieve cult status by being so horrendously awful that they circle around the giant, invisible wheel of crap back around to becoming great again. Still, other films seem as destined for cult status as those reaching for the awards. There is nothing stellar in these films. The acting won’t move you. The set designs often look like they were conceived on used McDonald’s napkins hours before the cameras start rolling. The concepts are the stuff of giving a teenager mountains of sugar, blindfolding them, spinning them around, and having them throw darts at a board full of random plot devices. Dead Snow 2 is such a film. You might think this to be a bad thing, but when such an endeavor is crafted with the same love and care as the Oscar contenders, something stupidly magical happens and cult status is achieved.

‘Scream’ Picked Up For MTV Series In 2015!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Oct 28th, 2014

Hey guys, Jana here,

scream-mtv

MTV has been circling a project for a while now that will fall right into line with ‘Teen Wolf‘. The biter series was taken straight from a film that was a big part of my childhood, Michael J. Fox was cemented in history as the ruff (Bad pun alert!) but lovable Scott Howard. Then MTV got their hands on it and bastardized it into something I don’t recognize anymore. The same network has picked another film to tear apart for weekly enjoyment, ‘Scream‘.

New Trailer For ‘Taken 3’ aka ‘Tak3n’!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Sep 30th, 2014

Hey guys, Jana here,

taken-3-poster-440x600

I love Liam Neeson. I love his voice, his looks – the whole package. I watch everything he’s been in, yes, even the crap movies. Believe me, there are some really bad movies in that lineup, too. He was the perfect voice for Aslan in ‘The Chronicles of Narnia‘, he was amazing as Hannibal in ‘The A-Team‘ and when he started his journey as Bryan Mills in ‘Taken‘, I didn’t think it was possible to love him more. Then came ‘Taken 2‘, I was excited about his return as Mills, but the film wasn’t the same as the original, no matter how hard they tried to emulate it. The end of production numbers proved it wasn’t a giant blockbuster, but still successful. Then some genius came up with the idea of ‘Tak3n‘. Yup, clever little title and Mills returns again. I have to think he didn’t agree to this after the second, but hopefully was a part of the contract when he signed on for 2. I have to hope Neeson is aware of how bad of an idea this film was but was contractually obligated to forge ahead.

Warner Bros. Is Developing ‘Space Jam 2’!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Feb 24th, 2014

Jana B. here,

Space Jam

Over the weekend, a very trusted news source in Hollywood called Deadline, ran a news story that said, “Lebron James was going to star in the upcoming ‘Space Jam‘ sequel. The article mentioned producers and a studio, which was Warner Bros. A day or so later, Lebron and a couple of people on the NBA side and close to Lebron’s camp refuted the story and basically said this wasn’t happening. But the wording they used was confusing. The sources said that there have been no “substantive discussions”, which means, the deals are not made yet, however talks have happened. It seems like Warner Bros. is definitely making a ‘Space Jam‘ sequel, and they want  Lebron to star in it, but again, no deals have been made yet. In my personal opinion, I think Shaq should star rather than Lebron. Or just get Jordan back. He’s not doing anything. Below is the original story.

Forest Whitaker Joining Liam Neeson for ‘Taken 3’!?!?

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 29th, 2014

Hi, Bryan Here…

18254-2068

It’s official. Director Olivier Megaton and actor Liam Neeson will return for the third installment of the ‘Taken‘ franchise. I guess Megaton loved Forest Whitaker in ‘Bloodsport‘ and ‘Ghost Dog‘, so he has asked Whitaker to be in the third film. I imagine he’ll say yes, because what else is Forest up to, besides winning Oscars now?

Last year, we saw two films tackle the darkest of moments in American History.  Quentin Tarantino’sDjango Unchained” gave us a “what if?” historical satire that was a hit with critics and audiences alike.  Steven Spielberg chimed in too with the also acclaimed, though incredibly white washed, “Lincoln,” which depicted the legislative maneuvering that underwent to abolish slavery.

The Top 20 Vampire Movies Of All Time!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 20th, 2013

Jana B., Here…

085 - Evil Ed

I love making lists. Grocery lists. Bucket lists. Holiday lists. Favorite movie lists. Favorite VAMPIRE movie lists. I bet that got your attention, didn’t it? This is MY list of the top 20 Vampire movies ever made. Why did I point out that it was MY list? Easy. So you read this knowing it wasn’t an Academy vote that got a movie on this list. No one paid me to promote their movie. However, I’m NOT against this, just to be clear. Why spend time putting movies in a list? Maybe it satisfies some Freudian lack of paternal affection I suffered as a child. But the real answer is, “Why wouldn’t I make a list as awesome as this?”

The most exciting event in American television is coming up this Sunday, and I’m a little concerned that some of you are going to make the wrong choice. Sure, Season 6 of “Mad Men” premieres, but that’s not the right call. The correct choice is to pony up and order Wrestlemania 29 on pay-per-view. Unfortunately, I’ve hit a lot of dead ends trying to spark Wrestlemania conversations. So I’ve compiled this helpful list, breaking down the featured matches at the Showcase of the Immortals by the television show you should forego watching in order to truly soak in the Show of Shows.

Bryan Reviews ‘Cars 2’ in 3D!!! (A 3D Blu-ray Review)

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 19th, 2011

Hi Bryan Here…..

I liked two things from Cars 2.  It looks really good and crisp.  And Bruce “man-god” Campbell lends his voice to one of the cars.  That’s it.  I don’t understand why Pixar lowered the bar with this one.  Cars 2 actually should have been called “The Mater Show” since the film it 95% about him, which is just terrible on every level.  Maybe it’s because I find Larry the Cable Guy just an untalented guy.  The first Cars film has always been my least favorite of all the Pixar films, but that’s not saying much, because every Pixar film is AWESOME.  AWESOME until this sequel.  However this is one of the best looking Pixar films ever to grace blu-ray.  And the 3D is top notch after the first big scene of the film.  But does that make it worth the buy?  You be the judge.

Hi Bryan Here…..

I am too old for the Phineas and Ferb craze and culture, but I must say that this cartoon movie and the cartoon itself is quite spectacular.  Don’t get me wrong.  It is silly and stupid, but I can totally see this cartoon on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim line up.  It just needs the little push to become a little more raunchy and it will totally have it.  Phineas and Ferb I believe started in 2007 and this film ‘Across the 2nd Dimension’ was released earlier in 2011.  These crazy characters and hilarious and exciting adventure prove that Disney’s Phineas and Ferb can not only be loved by the young ones, but by teens and adults.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #644 – Mark Waid and Paul Azaceta continue in the third issue of the Origin of the Species arc.  Since Marvel created the “Spidey Brain Trust” and the thrice-monthly schedule over a year ago, many new characters and plot-lines have developed to create this Spider-Man universe.  Waid has found a unique way to throw many of Spidey’s past foes at him all at once in this issue.  Spidey is not only swinging through NYC to escape with his own life, but he’s on the run to save the baby of Norman Osborn and Harry Osborn’s ex-girlfriend, a baby with unique Goblin serum properties (and a huge ransom)…oooh, creepy!  This is a particularly emotional issue with some of the confrontations with his enemies, particularly the cool twist at the end.  I really wasn’t excited about Azaceta’s art the last couple of issues but it has developed nicely, especially with the amazing coloring job.  Azaceta’s pencils are really tight and he has a real knack for illustrating big camera shots and fast-paced action well.  I really thought this issue was a fun read and I can’t wait to read next week’s issue!  (4 out of 5)

CAPTAIN AMERICA #610 – First of all, check out that killer cover.  Cap’s vibranium shield smacking Baron Zemo upside the face is brutal!  Ed Brubaker has had me cheering for Captain America again with the conclusion of his last arc, “No Escape.”  The last four issues have been the story of how the new Baron Zemo found out that his father didn’t exactly kill Bucky (current Captain America) back in WWII like he originally thought.  We get to see Zemo’s true intentions and feelings toward Bucky in this issue, and it may not be the strict revenge plot that you’re thinking.  This was such an awesome issue and it has this insanely cool “pulp” feel to it, particularly with Butch Guice’s pencils.  I was really bummed when Steve Epting left the book as his version of Captain America was definitely my favorite by far…but Guice has really impressed me big time here.  I could honestly care less about the Nomad back-up story as it has little if anything to do with what’s going on in Captain America and I’m very happy that they’re switching gears and having a Black Widow back-up next issue…ahh, much better.  Been away from Captain America for a while?  Come back pronto as it’s getting absolutely awesome again.  (5 out of 5)

CHEW #14 – Always one of my favorite indie/creator-owned series since it debuted, Chew has never dipped into suck territory.  John Layman writes a tight story and has an awesome sense of humor.  The main character, Tony Chu, is a cibopath, which means he receives psychic impressions from whatever he eats…yes I said WHATEVER he eats, as it never fails that he’s put in some pretty cringe-worthy gustatory situations.  The series takes place in a slightly alternative world where the FDA is the top-police force after the Bird Flu epidemic cripples the world.  Tony is a FDA agent/detective and his cases are always in that crazy “oh wow, why didn’t I think of that?” mode, especially centering on the illegal post-Bird Flu chicken production/trafficking.  This is an interesting title as it is definitely meant for adults in it’s graphic nature, but it’s just so ridiculously fun.  Rob Guillory has this really unique art style that can take the violent or grotesque subject matter and twist it into dark comedy awesomeness.  This issue features the return of Tony’s ex-partner Mason Savory as well as a really funny back-story concerning Tony’s past love life, is it possible to wince and laugh at the same time?  By no means was this a bad issue at all, but it wasn’t quite at the top of the heap of Chew books so far, but keep this original series coming!  The creative team assure us we’re in for a sweet 60-issue run.  (4 out of 5)

SECRET WARRIORS #20 – The Secret Warriors is the covert team directed by Nick Fury who has been “underground” in the Marvel U for a number of years now.  Jonathon Hickman is a supremely intelligent writer (loved his amazing indie mini-series The Nightly News) who honestly writes above my head at times as he weaves together so many characters and plot-lines that it is hard to keep up without constant charts and graphs, haha.  When this series first started, it was really just about how badass Nick Fury is and the development of his new core team of covert operatives, but the series slowly built up to including multiple enemy forces (Hail Hydra!) and his own set of sub-teams with their own unique code names.  The cast in this series is HUGE, particularly at only 20 issues in.  This is the penultimate arc of the series, and I highly recommend following along in trade format where you can digest entire arcs together.  I wonder if this will ever receive the omnibus treatment from Marvel one day, as this would be best read all at once.  If this series had more of a focus on Nick Fury, Dum Dum Dugan, and the Howling Commandos, I’d easily give this a top rating, but considering how confusing this is all getting, and how the art has taken a dip in quality, I’m only giving this a (3 out of 5)

AVENGERS PRIME #3 (OF 5) – Marvel had decided to retool/revamp their Avengers franchise with the cancellation of all their past Avengers books and then starting Avengers, New Avengers, Secret Avengers, and Avengers Academy, all with new #1 issue numbering.  And as if four new series weren’t enough to contain all the subsequent Avengers mythos, Brian Michael Bendis has been releasing this Avengers Prime mini-series with legendary artist Alan Davis.  It may be premature of me to say so, but this has been my favorite new Avengers title out of the list and sadly it is only a 5 issue mini.  This story centers around the holy Marvel trinity that is Captain America (Steve Rodgers), Thor, and Iron Man.  Bendis’ dialogue is top-notch, especially with Tony Stark’s monologue with a huge dragon creature as I really felt that Robert Downey Jr. biting dry wit (an instance where the movies have actually positively affected the source material back again).  The three heroes are stuck in one of the nine realms beyond Asgard (as it has fallen recently in the Siege storyline) and it is still a mystery as to what is truly transpiring here.  Davis’ art is SO good, very classic pencils with modern coloring techniques makes for some awesome comic art.  I am salivating for the next issue…thus initiating my first official Pick of the Week here at Boomstick Comics!  (5 out of 5)

Film Review: ‘The Commuter’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 12th, 2018

SOMEONE PLEASE STOP TAKING LIAM NEESON’S FAMILY!!! Ok, so maybe ‘The Commuter‘ isn’t so much about having his family ‘Taken’, but they get threatened to get taken, and that’s close enough.

Hey guys, Jana here,

neilgaiman1

When Neil Gaiman wants to tell you a story, you stop and listen. Having said that, listen up!

According to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch (the world’s only completely accurate book of prophecies, written in 1655, before she exploded), the world will end on a Saturday. Next Saturday, in fact. Just before dinner.

So the armies of Good and Evil are amassing, Atlantis is rising, frogs are falling, tempers are flaring. Everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. Except a somewhat fussy angel and a fast-living demon—both of whom have lived amongst Earth’s mortals since The Beginning and have grown rather fond of the lifestyle—are not actually looking forward to the coming Rapture.

And someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist . . .

You or I couldn’t come up with something this wonderful, but Neil Gaiman and Sir Terry Pratchett could, and they did. ‘Good Omens‘ is what it’s better known as and it’s gloriously funny in the way only these brilliant writers could be. I’m not sure what emotion I like more, the absolute elation I felt as I read the book, or the giddy joy in finding out that this book has made the long trek to being realized as a series on Amazon Prime!!!

Oh yes, you read that right, and it’s only taken 27 years. What could possibly be better you ask? Neil Gaiman will PERSONALLY be handling the adaptation, writing each script and serving as the showrunner. Amazon Studios and BBC will co-produce what is to be 6 hour-long episodes that will air in 2018. The great thing, for those of us with an Amazon Prime subscription, is that the miniseries will premiere on Amazon Prime video first before it goes to BBC.

‘The Goonies’ Sequel Is Finally Happening!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Apr 6th, 2014

Hello, Jana here,

GC-today

I could begin this with ‘Hey, you guys!’, or ‘Goonies never say die!’ but that has been done. Seriously, if the joke is that easy, everyone is going to come up with it, and who needs another news piece spouting the same tag line? Turns out the paparazzi pick up more than just bad angled pictures. Director Richard Donner was signing autographs near the cameramen and one of them picked up the scoop that Donner’s next film is going to be a sequel to a favorite movie for millions of people – ‘The Goonies‘!! We’ve all been through the rumors that it was in the works and that a script was being or had been written, just to find out that it was making no real progress.

Forest Whitaker To Direct ‘The Shack’!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Feb 2nd, 2014

Jana B. here,

The Shack

Forest Whitaker is hoping to bring the bestselling novel ‘The Shack’ by William Paul Young to film adaptation soon. Summit Entertainment acquired the rights to the novel in April 2013. Summit Entertainment is responsible for great movies like ‘The Crow‘, ‘Gone‘, ‘Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas‘, but they also gave us ‘The Twilight‘ saga. So make of that what you will.

Film Review: ‘Alex Cross’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 18th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

‘Alex Cross’ was such a let down. James Patterson’s novel or novels about a clever cop did not adapt well to this particular film.  I feel like this movie could have been 100 times better than it was.  I think it was in the wrong hands from start to finish and it just completely imploded on itself.  Maybe this will make money in the box office due to Tyler Perry’s fan-base wanting to see something completely different from the actor than what he normally does, but I don’t see people giving a second though, or really even a first thought while watching this poorly made movie.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Molly’s Game’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 28th, 2018

THE FILM

(This film portion was written by Beka Perlstein)

Do you have a girl crush on Jessica Chastain? Do you have a man crush on Idris Elba? If you have any combination of the two, Molly’s Game is going to make you have all the feels. This is a well done film with all the right players and script that packs a punch. Aaron Sorkin (screenplay and first time director) has taken the novel Molly’s Game and turned it into a film that at a run time of two hours and twenty minutes seems fast paced and doesn’t waste your time. While I know literally nothing about poker, this movie kept me entertained and engaged because the story wasn’t the game-it was the players.

4K UHD Review: ‘Justice League’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 13th, 2018

THE FILM

(This film portion was written by Dan Moran)

There are several things about Justice League that are good. I think the cast is terrific. Gal GadotBen AffleckJason Momoa, and Ezra Miller are great in their roles. They each have a character moment (earned or not) that makes me interested in seeing their next solo adventure. DC/WB has put some talented filmmakers in charge of the next slate of movies. Justin Lin doing Aquaman sounds great, Patty Jenkins taking Wonder Woman on her next adventure, and Matt Reeves writing and directing The Batman. These are world-class filmmakers who have a great actor in the title role and hopefully that leads to some great story telling. I have no idea who is directing The Flash but I did enjoy him as the comic relief character in Justice League and would like to see if he is more than that in the future. Even Henry Cavill’s “new” Superman was delightful as he is reborn in this film and is no longer a whiney douchebag with terrible parents. Man of Steel 2 is actually on my radar now! But those are the nicest things I can say about Justice League. I loved the cast and I look forward to their solo adventures because having them all together in whatever Justice League was/is/supposed to be was a horrific insult to the fans of DC and moviegoers in general.

Film Review: ‘Victor Crowley’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 1st, 2018

You’ve heard the names Freddy Krueger, Jason Vorhees, and Michael Myers before, and you know what they’re capable of. In addition to those names, you should get to know Victor Crowley, who has earned a spot right next to these horror icons with his own film franchise called ‘Hatchet‘. Director Adam Green (Frozen, Hatchet, Holliston) comes back to the director’s chair for the 4th installment in the ‘Hatchet‘ franchise called ‘Victor Crowley‘. Green, being a passionate fan of the horror genre himself, has taken his favorite elements from all of our favorite horror movies from the 1970s, 80s, and 90s, and injected them into his films in the best ways.

THE FILM

Back in 2009, the brilliant filmmaker Sam Raimi journeyed back to his horror roots and made a fun-as-hell horror-comedy film called ‘Drag Me To Hell‘. For those of you who don’t remember who Sam Raimi is, movies like ‘Evil Dead II‘, ‘Army of Darkness‘, ‘The Spider-Man Trilogy‘, and ‘Darkman‘ are some of his accomplishments. Raimi and his brother and frequent collaborator Ivan Raimi had an idea for a horror film called ‘The Curse‘, but when Raimi booked the ‘Spider-Man‘ gig, that film was put on hold for the next decade. After ‘Spider-Man 3‘ was released, Sam and Ivan went quickly back to their idea to work on a low budget horror film again, which turned into ‘Drag Me To Hell’.

After Sam Raimi (The Evil Dead Trilogy) got done filming ‘Spider-Man‘ movies and a variety of other non-horror projects, the master filmmaker returned to his roots with a fun-as-hell film called ‘Drag Me To Hell‘, which mixed his unique style of silly humor and ultimate terror. The film was released in 2009 and was a return to form for Raimi, before he got on board with revamping ‘The Evil Dead‘ in TV series form. The new collector’s Edition Blu-ray will be available on February 13th and have theatrical and unrated cuts of the film, a new transfer, and new interviews with the cast. Prior bonus features will also be available here too. I can’t wait for this one.
