Film Review: ‘Annihilation’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 23rd, 2018

Adapted screenplays are common these days as more studios seek out novelists for material inspiration. In the latest visual reworking, Director Alex Garland, who modernized artificial intelligence and gave us the ingenious ‘Ex Machina,’ shares his dexterity for the science fiction genre once again with ‘Annihilation.’ The film plants you into the surreal world of Jeff Vander Meer’s unique imagination; a place that is both cosmic and disconcerting. This biosphere venture is a daring and elegant investigation of impossibilities. Its complexity and terror-inducing thrills will not only cause cold sweats, but leave viewers mystified at the end of a strange trip.

‘Annihilation’ trailer is here!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 13th, 2017

Based on Jeff VanderMeer’s best-selling Southern Reach Trilogy, Annihilation stars Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, Tuva Novotny and Oscar Isaac. It was written and directed by Alex Garland (Ex Machina, 28 Days Later). It looks so good and scary as hell. It has a lot of ‘Alien‘ and ‘Predator‘ vibes to it too. Perhaps this will be the better version of those movies that came out several years ago. The movie will release on February 23, 2018, which you can bet, I’ll be first in line for.

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

Screen Shot 2017-02-20 at 10.57.37 AM

Some people love his films. Some hate his films. No matter which side of the spectrum you’re on, you have to agree that every one of Terrence Malick’s films look exquisitely beautiful. With movies like ‘Tree of Life‘, ‘Knight of Cups‘, ‘The Thin Red Line‘, ‘Badlands‘, and ‘Days of Heaven‘, you can’t help but become entranced in the story, characters, and visual spectacle of Malick’s filmmaking process. His past few films have mostly shown a variety of characters who rarely say anything on screen, but instead narrate the movie as it goes along, giving a better visual masterpiece of cinema than a dialogue driven movie.

Film Review: ‘Knight of Cups’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 9th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

maxresdefault

There are two types of people in this world. Those who love Terrence Malick films and those who don’t. I tend to be the former in all aspects, from his films ‘Days of Heaven‘, ‘Badlands‘, and ‘The Thin Red Line‘. Recently, Malick has become more experimental with his filmmaking, with the amazing ‘Tree of Life‘ and ‘To the Wonder‘. Malick hasn’t been telling traditional narratives in a sense of the standard Hollywood formula, but rather has told a story with very little dialogue exchanged between characters as they walk through cityscapes and nature with a narrator voice over, detailing a stream of consciousness.

Say what you will, but director Terrence Malick is brilliant. I love all of his films. He has a unique eye and lens that perfectly captures life and people. With films like ‘Days of Heaven‘, ‘Badlands‘, ‘The Thin Red Line‘, and ‘Tree of Life‘, you can tell that Malick is one of the better filmmakers still working today. His new film ‘Knight of Cups‘ looks beautiful, but I wish it was a mix of some sort of beer pong and LARPing. Could you imagine Malick doing something like that? I wish. Here is the new trailer for the film, which looks to have a great cast and releases March 4th.

Knight of Cups‘ comes from writer/director Terrence Malick and stars Christian BaleCate Blanchett and Natalie Portman and hits big screens on March 4. The production of this project was a little different for everyone involved. Christian Bale just got a character description with no lines, some characters received lines with the option to use any or all they desired. Everything captured on film was an organic reaction to the situations they were presented with.

There’s been a project called ‘It’s ‘What I Do: A Photographer’s Life Of Love and War‘, which is a memoir by Lynsey Addario that has Hollywood clamoring to buy the rights for the big screen. It now seems that Warner Bros. has the upper hand and set to strike a deal with a highly bankable and talented team.

Seth Grahame-Smith has made a name for himself in the book world and in the film world. He was a writer and producer since around 2000 and his been a part of projects like ‘The Hard Times of RJ Berger‘ and ‘Dark Shadows‘. Then came the big screen adaptation of his novel ‘Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter‘, from there he picked up several more projects. He is currently writing the ‘Beetlejuice‘ sequel for Director Tim Burton and signed on as a producer for the project. In a producer capacity, he is involved in the ‘It‘ remake, the ‘Gremlins‘ reboot and ‘Ninjago‘. I’ll spare you the argument I have against film remakes.

Film Review: ‘Thor: The Dark World’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 7th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

Thor-2_2709663b

And we’re back with the first non-Iron-Man sequel in the Marvel universe with ‘Thor: The Dark World‘, with the entire cast back ready for more saving the universe and defeating evil. However, this time around, the sequel felt uneasy and a little bit off, as it dragged in the mid-section quite a bit, or when Tom Hiddleston’s Loki (Thor’s adopted brother) is not on screen. Sure, the main event is Thor himself (Chris Hemsworth), but he seems to take a back seat for most of the film, as the co-stars really drive this movie as Thor smashes his hammer from foe to foe.

Hollywood is Remaking ‘Weird Science’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Apr 18th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

Weird_Science_Cast_760

John Hughes would not be happy about this. Universal Pictures and Silver Pictures are set to remake ‘Weird Science’, the 1985 iconic film that was the superlative tale of nerds who had their ultimate wish come true. Joel Silver will produce the film as he produced the original with Hughes back in the 80s. Michael Bacall will pen the screenplay for the remake. Bacall wrote the remake of ‘21 Jump Street’ (which was another 80s remake) and the party film ‘Project X’.

Bryan Journeys Into Mystery With “Thor”!!! (A Review)

by Gumbercules9000 on May 8th, 2011

Hi Bryan Here…

The Almighty Thor is finally here.  Marvel’s next feature film in their line of super-hero films revving up for the huge epic “Avengers” film may surprise you.  Thor is great.  It’s very different from the past Marvel films, but different is very good.  Especially for a hero like Thor.  What makes Thor different from the other Marvel Super-Heroes in films is that Thor is not from Earth nor is he really a human.  He is a GOD.  And when I think of Thor my brain usually goes to the Greek Mythology place and to that Shakespearean universe.  So it was only too perfect that Shakespearean vet, Kenneth Branagh would be the director for this epic film of Thor.

TOP 133 FILMS OF THE LAST DECADE (#100 – #85)

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 4th, 2010

Here we are in the Top 100 films of the last decade.  There are some great titles on here.  Enjoy.  As usual, there is the movie title name along with the date it was released, a mini review/memory of the film and a link that takes you to AMAZON where you can purchase the flick for a great price.

100_ Signs – August 2, 2002

I really enjoyed this Alien film from M. Night.  Total Hitchcockian throughout.  That scene with the alien stuck in the pantry of and Mel Gibson tries to get a glimpse of it with the  reflection of a butcher knife is so tense.  If aliens do come to Earth, hopefully they are not hostile.  A very good solid alien film.  Very tense.

99_ Garden State – July 28, 2004

Zach Braff shows the world he is a very talented director, not just a comedic tv actor.  This film has tons of heart and soul in it.  You really feel for the characters. Nothing is forced and it moves along nicely.  Natalie Portman is so lovely in this film. The soundtrack is one of the best of the decade as well. Go Shins.  I wish more films were like this. I look forward to more directorial efforts from Braff.

98_ A Serious Man – October 2, 2009

The latest film from The Coen Bros.  A very dark comedy.  The story follows a Jewish man who has a family, a job, and everything else but respect.  Everyone shits on him.  I can say that if you are NOT jewish or you do not have any jewish friends then you most likely wont get a lot of the film, but this film is hilarious.  This is suppose to be the Coen Bros. Biopic piece about themselves growing up.  I can relate.  Pretty funny.  A must see.

97_ Dawn of the Dead – March 19, 2004

The only complaint I had about this film is that I wish it wasn’t called Dawn of the Dead, which tells people it is a remake of the Romero classic.  It is not, although same story line in a way, but no.  This zombie thriller is BALLS TO THE WALL awesome.  It has got some of the best deaths, chills, and survival scenarios ever.  The scene where they shoot zombies that look like famous people is priceless.  Love this film.  Go James Gunn and Zach Snyder.  Some of the best head shots in cinema history.

96_ Match Point – January 20, 2006

Another Woody Allen film.  This marks the first in a set of films that Woody filmed in England.  This certainly does not play out like a typical Woody Allen film.  It is not funny whatsoever.  It is a serious drama.  So well played out and acted and directed and written.  Everything really.  This film follows a young man who meets a girl from a wealthy family.  The family takes him in as one of their own, buying him and their daughter a house and getting him the job of a lifetime.  This guy has a long affair with the beautiful Scarlett Johanssen.  When our main character wants to break off the affair he does so by murder.  What a film.  A must see.

95_ Hard Candy – April 14, 2006

What a brutal film this was.  A young Ellen Paige is the star in this film.  I literally had the flop sweats when I saw this in the theatre because I was so tense.  Wheww.  Just thinking about it gives me shivers.  Tons of twists and turns in this film. I do not want to give anything away, but seriously….see this film.  It will make you sweat.

94_ Super Troopers – February 16, 2001

Broken Lizards first feature film hit the jackpot and changed our lives forever with the immediate cult icon Officer Rod Farva.  This film follows the Highway patrol team and their hilarious antics with civilians.  People still today quote this film and will for some time.  I remember laughing out loud in the theatre for fifteen minutes straight at the biker line.  If you like comedy, then get off your ass and see this film if you have not already.  You will love it.

93_ Best In Show – September 29, 2000

A wonderful mockumentary from Chris Guest about Dog Shows and the people who take their dogs there.  We all know these types of people.  Dog People.  And it is all sorts of funny to watch all of their worlds crumble.  Oh the nut rant is prime.  This is dry humor at its best and your gut will hurt from all the laughter throughout the film. Stellar performaces all around.  More please.

92_ Fahrenheit 9/11 – June 23, 2004

An amazing documentary about the 9/11 attacks and the events leading up to it and all the questions we had about it.  We just didn’t know the truth, but we do now, and it was not pretty.  Michael Moore was the first to show us the truth on this.  This documentary will anger you and make you laugh and cry.  This is what I think is the start of the fall of George W. Bush.  You see who he really is in this film.  Go M.M.

91_ Black Snake Moan – March 2, 2007

I really did enjoy this little film.  I believe this film was loosely based on the great blues legend R.L. Burnside’s life.  It definitely has the great music to back it up.  Sam Jackson plays a old genuine God Fearing man who comes across a beaten up tramp played by the gorgeous Christina Ricci and takes her in to his home to get her well.  She was left for dead.  She gets all better and Sam Jackson chains her to his heater and he aims to cure her of her wickedness and make her a better person.  It is really good.  See it.

90_ Grindhouse – April 6, 2007

Oh yes. Tarantino and Rodriguez pay homage to the 70’s grindhouse experience by making a double feature of badassery, exploitation, and violence.  An allstar cast in both films.  One film deals with zombies and the other film deals with a crazed killer in a kick ass car.  The soundtrack is out of this world.  If you want to get a group of your friends together and pound a ton of beer and eat tons of junk food, then put this double feature on and enjoy the hell out of it.  So much fun.  I look forward to another double feature in the future from these two brilliant filmmakers.  Thank you for giving me this pleasure.

88_ Thirst – July 31, 2009

A really fantastic Korean Vampire film from the director of OLDBOY.  I like this one so much for its way of showing you every aspect of being a vampire and the guilt it causes and your need to feed.  More vampire films like this.  This director is amazing.  Not too much gore but just enough.

87_ Burn After Reading – September 12, 2008

I loved this Coen Brothers comedy.  Not a lot of people did.  It grows on you.  It is a comedy dram about the US government.  Starring George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Frances McDormand, Richard Jenkins, and John Malkovich.  If you liked Big Lebowski, you will like this film.  Tons of laughs.

86_ Night Watch – February 17, 2006

The first film in this Russion Horror trilogy.  This film is pretty epic and I believe is the biggest budget film Russia has ever done.  There are shape shifters, ghosts, murders, robots, monsters, vampires and much much more.  The visuals are stunning.  I highly recommend these films.  Classic Good vs. Evil here.

85_ Sin City – April 1, 2005

Finally the comic book of hardcore comes to the big screen.  I love these comics and the fact that Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino brought in Frank Miller to make this shows me just how brilliant they are in filmmaking.  Pretty much shot for shot and the same dialogue as the comic.  It is beautiful.  I love this modern Noir style.  Mickey Rourke as Marv is genius.  This is gruesome, funny and action packed.  Brittany Murphy does a stellar job in this too.  Cannot wait for the rest of the comics in comic book form.

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 16th, 2010

Director David O. Russell (Three Kings, I Heart Huckabees) has a new movie called “The Fighter” starring Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale, and Amy Adams.

The synopsis: “The Fighter” is a drama about boxing champ “Irish” Micky Ward and his half-brother Dicky, a boxer-turned-trainer who rebounded after nearly being destroyed by drugs and crime.”

This looks to be an Oscar contender and one of the better boxing movies to come out in a while.
