4K UHD Review: ‘Thor: Ragnarok’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 26th, 2018

THE FILM

Thor is starring in his third stand-alone film called ‘Thor: Ragnarok‘ and brings a much needed change to the character in the best possibly way. Thor now has a fun personality and great comedic timing, mostly due to Chris Hemsworth amazing acting chops here. In addition to that, the film is steeped in a hypnotic, yet hyper-active color scheme that looks like Willy Wonka and Andy Warhol got together and decorated a city. In fact, Wonka’s theme ‘Pure Imagination’ is a song that plays in the film. It’s not all cold and stiff dialogue here anymore with brown or earth toned aliens and robots that Thor has to use his hammer to fight. Everyone and everything is covered in bright primary and pastel colors that creates a breath of fresh air in this stale universe. That’s all thanks to filmmaker Taika Waititi for giving his unique vision on this big budget film ($180 million). In previous Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, particularly with Thor, things have been sour and gloomy.

Thor: Ragnarok‘ is swinging to 4K UHD and Blu-ray very soon. In fact, you’ll be able to watch the movie digitally on February 20. Then on March 6th, you’ll be able to purchase the 4K UHD Disc and Blu-ray. The 4K UHD presentation will have the HDR10 capability and there will be a Dolby Atmos track included, which I bet will be demo-worthy. In addition to that, there is a treasure trove of bonus features, which are listed out below. This will be the best looking Thor film on home video thus far.

Hey guys, Jana here,

The Avengers are back and they’ve brought a few friends. The next installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe  packs the star-power in like gunpowder to a bomb making it ready to ignite a powder keg of awesome to kick off the summer. The usual suspects have all returned, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Mark Ruffalo, Robert Downey, Jr., and Jeremy Renner. But there is room for more awesome, and we get it with the addition of Karen Gillan, Chris Pratt, Pom Klementieff, and Zoe Saldana from ‘Guardians of the Galaxy‘, Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, Tom Holland’s Peter Parker and far too many to mention to round out one kick-ass movie, or at least that’s what the trailer leads us to expect. We can’t forget to mention that Josh Brolin’s Thanos is back and will stop at nothing to get what he wants, the Infinity Stones.

Film Review #2: ‘Thor: Ragnarok’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 4th, 2017

Taika Waititi legitimately reinvigorated  the marvel brand with Thor: Ragnarok. A lot of the criticism that Marvel movies get is that there are no stakes and we know that the heroes will always win. No kidding? That’s every superhero movie. No one thought Iron Man would die, no one thought Cap would die, no one thought Batman was dead in TDKR, no one thought (cared?) Superman died in BvS. Waititi proves that not taking a paint by numbers destroy the world story too seriously can be a damn blast.

A Retrospective Look Back at the year 2007 in Movies!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 20th, 2017

Written by: Dan Moran

It has been a decade since we have had an overwhelmingly great year of movies. There have been some ‘great movies’ for sure, that have been released since 2007, but a collective year of dominance like 2007 hasn’t been experienced in 10 years. We have to start with the films that people still talk about today from 2007. No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood, & Zodiac. I mean what a Top 3 for one calendar year!  The closest we got to this was in 2015 when the Top 3 was, Mad Max: Fury Road, Mad Max: Fury Road, & Mad Max: Fury Road.

4K UHD Review: ‘Now You See Me 2’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 1st, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

THE FILM

This film review portion was written by Beka Perlstein of Boomstick Comics.

Life is all about the long game. ‘Now You See Me 2‘ pulls you in from the very beginning and quickly wraps you up in a fun game of cat and mouse with none other than The Four Horsemen. This quirky group of magicians is back from the first flick with one major improvement- Lizzy Caplan has replaced Isla Fisher as the token chick, playing Lula May. She’s funny, spunky and the perfect addition to the otherwise all male ensemble.

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 10th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

53fe9c57-1190-4d61-b197-fcda11fc89af

The awards show is January 10 on NBC hosted by Ricky Gervais. First off, let’s look at something AWESOME here. ‘MAD MAX: FURY ROAD‘ is nominated for BEST PICTURE. It needs to win. It should win. And if does win, we all go streaking. That being said…I can’t believe that ‘Me and Earl and the Dying Girl‘ was not nominated for anything. Come on. It’s one of the BEST films of the year. It’s also interesting to see no love for the final season of ‘Mad Men’ her either. Oh well.

Here is the list of nominees:

The ‘Now You See Me 2’ Trailer Is Full of Magic!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Nov 18th, 2015

Hey guys, Jana here,

nowucme2

Now You See Me‘ was a really clever, entertaining film, kind of our generation’s ‘Ocean’s Eleven‘, not that one, the first one with Sinatra, Deano and Sammy. It was genius, so I was excited for a sequel and now that we’ve seen the trailer. This one stars Michael Caine, Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Daniel Radcliffe and Mark Ruffalo among others. I’m anticipating the release date, which is all the way in June, but this trailer might hold me over.

Film Review: ‘Infinitely Polar Bear’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 2nd, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

maxresdefault

You may not know the name Maya Forbes yet, but you soon will. Forbes’s directorial debut is a little gem of an indie film called ‘Infinitely Polar Bear‘, which she says is an autobiographical film about her growing up in Cambridge Massachusetts, where her mother left for a couple of years to pursue an M.B.A. at Columbia University in order to provide a better life for her family. Meanwhile, Maya’s father was forced to stay at home and take care of her and her sister, even though he was severely bi-polar.

2015 Disney Film Release Dates With Trailers!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Dec 30th, 2014

Hey guys, Jana here,

star-wars-disney-570x307

While the world is focusing on auld lang syne and bringing 2014 to a close, Disney is pointedly looking to the future or “To infinity and beyond!” as Buzz Lightyear would say. Walt Disney Studios has given us a wide list of release dates for 2015 including the first Star Wars since the mouse has taken ownership. It’s a big lineup and will, no doubt, bring in a wega-payday for the company. In the last year, three films, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy‘, ‘Maleficent‘ and ‘Captain America Winter Soldier‘ brought in over $700 million world-wide on their own. It stands to reason they can expect the same from 2015. Let’s kick it off with some animation!

Janet White’s Best/Worst List of 2014!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 29th, 2014

Janet W., Here…

2014What an interesting year in film.  There were some really good films and REALLY bad ones.  Some are bad because of my disappointment in the execution of potential brilliance.  Others are good because they brought an amazing story in a skillful manner that is worthy of memory.  I can only speak to the films that I was either blessed or, in some cases, cursed to screen, 23 in all (plus one cool dance performance).  Feedback is encouraged whether you agree, disagree, think I’m nuts (I am a little crazy), or if you think a film I reviewed should have been included.  Here are my Top 10 Best Films and Top 5 Worst Films of 2014….

Film Review: ‘Foxcatcher’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 25th, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

Foxcatcher

Director Bennett Miller has chosen his four films wisely. Starting with ‘The Cruise‘ back in 1998, Miller has only three more films on his resume, including ‘Foxcatcher‘. The previous two were ‘Capote‘ was an Oscar winner as well as ‘Moneyball‘. Miller has an uncanny knack for telling compelling stories that are based on real life events and engaging the audience to not only be entertained, but to think and discuss these characters and sometimes real people’s motives in what they did in their particular story. You can add to that, Miller’s success in getting his actors to win Oscars almost across the board, and this very dark and creepy film ‘Foxcatcher‘ is no different.

We first saw a trailer for Joss Whedon and Marvel Comics’Avengers 2: Age of Ultron‘ a few weeks ago where we saw a ver menacing Ultron (voiced by James Spader) singing a very creepy version of ‘I’ve Got No Strings On Me’. Someone leaked the trailer before it was supposed to debut on ‘Agents of SHIELD‘, to which Marvel answered by just releasing it early. It was quite comical, but one thing is for sure, the trailer was amazing.

Radcliffe and Caplan Cast In ‘Now You See Me 2’!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Nov 4th, 2014

Hey guys, Jana here,

now-you-see-me-gallery1

Now You See Me‘ was was a 2013 film that featured four magicians answering a mysterious summons that sets the stage for their later roles as The Four Horsemen who manage to pull off a real-time robbery during a stage act. This leads to an investigation by FBI and Interpol agents. I was impressed with the movie, it was a new story with a twist, very original.

If you look at the film ‘Shutter Island‘, you can see a prescription that provides instant success. The components are an amazing director in the form of Martin Scorsese, amazing acting via Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Michelle Williams and Max von Sydow. If you add a great story to base the whole premise on, like Dennis Lehane’s source novel, you can create the perfect storm. This is what happened in 2010 when audiences took in the film as it hit theaters.

Before, I get into the future project of Aaron Taylor-Johnson, a.k.a. Kick Ass, let me just take a moment to express how absolutely gorgeous this guy looks without the frizzy hair of his first appearance as the normal dude turned vigilante. I kind of slid my eyes past him because I could not see the hottie he had hidden. I just checked out a picture of him and was freaking gobsmacked at the boy looking back at me that will be filling my night time thoughts. Yummy. Now that I’ve stated the obvious but important point of his looks I can get on with his new project.

Film Review: ‘Now You See Me’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 30th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

now-you-see-me-banner

With a mix of ‘The Illusionist‘ and ‘The Prestige‘, and a healthy dose of ‘Ocean’s 11‘, director Louis Leterrier gives us ‘Now You See Me‘, which is a heist movie involving four magicians. The illusions in the film are over-the-top, but incredible and despite the movie’s flaws, its super fast pace makes its problems disappear from memory. With an all-star cast and decent dialogue, this magical caper might be one of the summer’s biggest surprises.

The Toronto Film Festival is coming up quickly and it looks like it is going to be one for the books.  ‘Looper’ is going to open up the festival with several other centerpiece films that strike my fancy.  Two of them include Joss Whedon’s Shakespeare film ‘Much Ado About Nothing’, and Terrence Malick’s new film, ‘To The Wonder’.  Can’t wait.  Below is the official press release.  Who’s going? Piers Handling, CEO and Director of TIFF, and Cameron Bailey, Artistic Director of the Toronto International Film Festival, made the first announcement of films to premiere at the 37th Toronto International Film Festival. Films announced include titles in the Galas and Special Presentations programmes. The announced films include 17 Galas and 45 Special Presentations, including 38 world premieres.

Hi, Bryan Here….

Joss Whedon’s Avengers is what every comic book geek and action film fanatic has dreamed of since they were a little kid.  Not only was it one of the most epic films ever shot on film, but Whedon used his wit and unique story telling to weave these iconic characters into a team that destroys evil.  You see, it’s not all about the people who form a team and save our planet.  It’s about a group of people from different times and different worlds, who necessarily don’t belong together, but realize that by teaming up, they form something bigger than themselves.  And notice that I don’t use the term superhero.  None of the Avengers refer to themselves or think of themselves as heroes, with the exception of Captain America, who really is the only hero in the story.
