Sep/2018

Filmmaker Kevin Smith defined a cinematic generation back in 1994 with his iconic motion picture ‘CLERKS‘, which he financed himself on a dozen or so credit cards. Smith enlisted the help of his friends to perform and make the movie itself on a low budget about a couple of people who work at a low-end convenient store and video rental place. It was a philosophical and hilarious look at the lives of everyday people and what goes through their mind. Some 25 years later, ‘CLERKS‘ is still as relevant and important as it was in the early 90s.

Since 1994, Smith has made a ton of movies in a variety of different genres, along with some A-List actors. The dialogue he writes is so realistic, quirky, and downright hilarious yet sentimental that you can’t help but fall in love with all most every character he comes up with. Let’s backtrack three years ago where Smith filmed a TV pilot called ‘HOLLYWEED‘ that stars himself and actor/comedian Donnell Rawlings (Chappelle Show/HBO’s The Wire), where the two work at a cannabis dispensary, talking about their issues with society and going on weird adventures – much like Dante and Randal did back in 1994 at the Quick Stop.

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

jayandsilentbobstrikeback-113582

Kevin Smith is everywhere these days. He’s making movies with food that wants to kill you, podcasting in multiple cities, selling his comic books at his retail stores, and even conducting interviews for IMDB at film festivals. “The guy is like MacGyver. No, motherfucker’s better than MacGyver.” Since his last film ‘Yoga Hosers‘, Smith has been making some DC television series on top of teasing us with stories of a ‘Clerks III‘ film and a ‘Mallrats‘ sequel series, both of which I would have sold my Michael Jackson statue to see.

Hey guys, Jana here,

When superstar director Kevin Smith and the man of 1,000 faces, Johnny Depp, put their daughters in a movie together, you know it’s going to be one to watch. and it’s ‘Yoga Hosers’, especially with Depp taking on yet another persona to appear next to his daughter. This one looks very interesting. Justin Long, star of the first of Smith’s True North Trilogy – ‘Tusk‘, appears along with an all-star cast featuring Smith and his partner-in-crime Jason Mewes. The stars are the Colleen’s played by Lily Rose-Madder Depp and Harley Quinn Smith. We’ve even got another appearance by the legendary Stan Lee.

Hey guys, Jana here,

Kevin Smith is a film maker that turned the business of making movies on it’s head. He hit the jackpot with 1994’s ‘Clerks‘. The script had “personal experience” written all over it and it made a very unexpected splash. Since then Smith has laid some pretty decent comedy on film, excluding ‘Jersey Girl‘.  I adore most of his films and it all started with ‘Clerks‘. Smith kept the indie-style film making with him the whole way. Nothing could prove that more than his latest film, ‘Tusk‘.

Interview with Kevin Smith at Fantastic Fest 2014!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 26th, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

kevin-smith-ears

We had the distinct honor to talk with the legendary director Kevin Smith in Austin, Tx at Fantastic Fest 2014. Smith is one of the pioneers of the indie film genre with cult hits such as ‘Clerks‘, ‘Mallrats‘, ‘Chasing Amy‘, ‘Dogma‘, ‘Jersey Girl‘, and ‘Red State‘. His new film, ‘Tusk‘ is quite the film. I’ve never seen anything like it. We discuss his ‘Red State‘ premiere in Kansas City, ‘Tusk‘, and his favorite scene in film, which might surprise some of you. It was a pleasure to talk with him and go see ‘TUSK‘. Enjoy!

There are few actors as widely known in Hollywood as Johnny Depp is right now. If you take his fan base and star power and attach it to a  writer-filmmaker of remarkable erudition like Kevin Smith, what results is going to be momentous. Kevin Smith Will Make ‘Tusk’ Before ‘Clerks III’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 25th, 2013

Jana B., Here….

kevin_smith_spoilers_large

Kevin Smith. I don’t hide my unabashed love for him and lust for Silent Bob’s counterpart, Jay, or has we know him, Jason Mewes. Felt like I was just living out the fantasy in ‘Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back‘ when he first saw Justice. OK, back to the reason I’m writing this. There is news on the ‘Clerks III‘ front! I seriously did a fist pump like I was channeling my inner Judd Nelson when I learned this. You know how Kevin Smith tells us that we’re going to have a new Clerks movie, but he has to do this one project first? This is one of those projects. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, the next film he’s going to make is titled ‘Tusk‘. Smith says it will be an “Ivory bridge” to ‘Clerks III’. If that’s not some Oscar Wilde like word play, I don’t know what is. Yeah, gratuitous insertion of ‘Clerks II‘ reference. Smith says it will make financing the sequel easier and also to work out some of the cobwebs from not having directed a film since 2011’s ‘Red State‘. We can all agree we want Smith at the top of his game for what will probably be the final Clerks installment.

Kevin Smith Announces ‘Clerks III’!!!

Kevin Smith has taken to his social media accounts to announce that he woke up early this morning and started writing ‘Clerks III‘. This is great news as I always love to see how Randle and Dante are doing from time to time. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like we will get his hockey movie anytime soon, which has gone back and forth from being a film, to a tv series, to a web series, to anything and everything else.

Bryan’s Best and Worst of 2014 List!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 22nd, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

Wright_39_s_Top_10_Films_of_2014

I can’t believe how fast this year has gone by. 2014 was an interesting year to say the least, most of which was great. Movie-wise, I think 2014 had some excellent films filling its theaters, but of course it had some real stinkers too. Below is my list of the Best and Worst films of 2014 with some added categories down at the bottom. I believe this year I watched over 145 new films, theatrically speaking and it was very difficult to narrow them down from 25. After some chocolate snacks covered in marshmallow cream, I finally had a TOP 10. But when you talk about the Best movies, you have to mention the worst too. My list tends to be a tad bit different from others, but hey, I’m twisted. I highly encourage you to seek out these movies – good or bad and enjoy the rest of your year.

Film Review: ‘Tusk’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 17th, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

tusk-movie

There is no doubt that Kevin Smith belongs in the same bracket as some of the best directors and story tellers of all time. He along with Quentin Tarantino and a few other filmmakers in the early 90s made their own creative films on a very cheap budget and hit success and have continued to make films still to this day. But Kevin’s story is quite the fun one. This is a guy who loves comics and movies who dropped out of film school, worked at a video store and maxed out his credit cards to the tune of $20k to make his first film ‘Clerks‘.

As most of you know, I LOVE Kevin Smith movies. The man is a linguistic genius and I never get tired of anything Kevin Smith or especially Jay and Silent Bob related. Plans were made for the man to begin filming the ending of his trilogy of ‘Clerks‘ in May. Unfortunately for us…and the world as a whole, this is not meant to be at this time. Smith gave a statement that The Weinstein Company, who own the rights to the franchise, passed on the sequel. There is no way they could have heard him correctly! This is ‘Clerks’ to the third power! ‘Fletch Lives’ On!!!

Hello Jana here,

Fletch

If you’re like me, when you hear the name ‘Fletch‘, you automatically picture the journalist played by Chevy Chase. I think you can see where this one is going. Yes, ‘Fletch‘ is being rolled over with the re-make wheel. I appreciate that it’s been in the works for a very long time. At least since the late 90’s when Kevin Smith was attached to direct. Smith made a valiant effort to give things a re-boot with a son-of-Fletch-story line that would have portrayed Chase turning the reigns over to his son. There were names from Brad Pitt-to-Dave Chappelle-to Ellen Degeneres in the running for the title role. Eventually Smith dropped out to work on his own original work.

Judd Apatow and Brie Larson Talk ‘Trainwreck’!!

Jana B. here,

Judd Apatow

Judd Apatow is developing ‘Trainwreck‘. No, I’m not saying I think the film will be a trainwreck.  Apatow has found his niche in the film world much in the same way Quentin Tarantino and Kevin Smith have their cemented fans. A few of the trademarks for an Apatow film are finding the same 10-12 actors appearing in almost each one, and while they are brilliant comedies, they’re realistic and a bit longer than the average 90 minute comedy. So far the only thing that’s been released about ‘Trainwreck‘, is that he’s directing and we’re beginning to see the cast fill out.

Haley Joel Osment is a name that is said pretty much in the same sentence as “Have you seen ‘The Sixth Sense‘? Film Review: ‘Don Jon’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 27th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

don-jon09

Here is Joseph Gordon Levitt’s debut as a writer/director/actor all in the same film, which is called ‘Don Jon‘. This movie at its core shows a simple man’s transition from an unlikable Guido sex-obsessed douche-bag into somewhat more a friendlier human being who is capable of having meaningful relationships. Levitt’s directorial and writing debut is quite fun and a tad-bit meaningful, but is often quite repetitive as we go along with his character, who himself can’t seem to stop doing several habits. Levitt and his love interest Scarlett Johansson should draw a decent crowd at theaters, considering the adult subject matter, but I see this making more money on home video than in theaters.

Jason Lee Lands New TV Series!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 20th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

banky-610x353

Jason Lee is set to play the lead in a new series for CBS called ‘Second Sight‘, which is a drama from Michael Cuesta and Carol Mendelsohn. This new series is actually based on a British series from the year 2000 and is described as a gothic psychological thriller. ‘Second Sight‘ follows a guy named Tanner (Lee), a detective with the New Orleans police department with a unique gift. He has an ocular disorder that causes him to have horrific hallucinations, which might actually help him in his cases.

Hi, Bryan Here….

Amazon’s Prime Streaming Service just got a hell of a lot better.  It will be giving Netflix a run for its money.  EPIX signed a deal with Amazon that more than doubles Amazon’s streaming film catalogue.  This comes shortly after EPIX’s contract with Netflix expired.  Now films from Paramount, MGM, and Lionsgate will be available on Amazon’s Streaming service.  “We think customers will really enjoy watching new titles like The AvengersIron Man 2 and The Hunger Games on their Kindle Fire, PlayStation 3, Xbox, iPad or any of the other of the Amazon Instant Video compatible devices,” says Amazon VP Bill Carr. Epix CEO Mark Greenberg calls the deal “a great line extension” for Amazon.  Read the official press release below.

Bryan Reviews ‘Total Recall’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 3rd, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

Some people will say that you can’t compare a remake to the original.  They say, “Let it stand on its own.”  It’s very difficult to do that with a film that garnered a lot of attention 22 years ago and still is a milestone in filmmaking in the science-fiction genre.  And it’s very tough to let a remake stand on its own if it doesn’t stray to far from the original.  There will always be comparisons.  Unfortunately, this 2012 version of ‘Total Recall’ is like a sore inside your mouth that is very painful that would only get better if you would stop tonguing it, but you can’t.  The only redeemable thing about this remake of ‘Total Recall’ are the visual FX.  If you took away that aspect of the film, you might have well been watching static on the screen for two hours.

Hi, Bryan Here….

Morgan Spurlock hits a home run with his new documentary, Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope.  Spurlock’s previous documentaries are: Super-Size Me, Greatest Movie Ever Sold, and the FX series 30 Days.  In all of these documentaries, Spurlock conducts different social experiments, always putting himself in front of the camera as the guinea pig.  With Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope, he is not seen on camera but rather follows several different people as they attend the one, the only, San Diego Comic-Con.

Boomstick Comics and the SOPA/PIPA!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 18th, 2012

Hi Bryan Here…..

As you may notice today, tons of websites are going “dark” today in opposition of the SOPA bill that congress is currently weighing in on.  Boomstick Comics will not be shutting down for this.  We will be be delivering you all the latest awesome entertainment information, trailers, reviews, and all sorts of other goodies until a lawyer calls and tells us we can’t anymore.  Even then, we will fight it.  Websites like Wikipedia, Fark, and Reddit are going “dark” today.  Basically these two bills” SOPA/PIPA” will put an immediate end to internet freedom and sharing information as we know it.

Hi Bryan Here…..

I don’t even know where to begin with ‘G-Force’.  I just can’t fathom that anyone thought that a bunch of guinea pigs that can talk and are actually super spies would get greenlit and made into a film.  Well that happened and kids love it.  I just don’t see anyone over the age of six enjoying this film, unless you have some sort of bizarre fetish and love for guinea pigs.  Other than the film itself being a complete disaster on all levels, the video and audio are pretty decent.  Especially the video presentation.  Talking rodents who are spies.  What’ll they think of next?

Bryan’s Top 10 Films of 2011!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 29th, 2011

Hi Bryan Here…

We’re here at that time again.  The end of the year.  And thus, here is my list of my top 10 movies of 2011.  Now these are films I saw in the theatre or at home that came out in the year 2011.  I have seen several films already that won’t come out until 2012, but those will have to wait till next year at this time.  There were tons of great films that came out this year.  It was a hard year to narrow down.  I usually pick my top 10, by going through the entire list of releases throughout the entire year and then writing all the ones  really liked down.  Then the narrowing process begins.  Now my Top 10 list will probably be way different then most others you will see.  I tend to chose films for my list that I thoroughly enjoy time and time again rather than ones that might win awards at the big shows.  Without further delay here is my Top 10 films for 2011.

Hi Bryan Here….

I remember watching Degrassi growing up way back when it first started.  It has changed quite a bit in its 10th season but the core of the stories are still there.  I remember when Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes (Jay and Silent Bob) got involved with the Degrassi franchise.  This 10th season had 44 episodes and was previously known as Degrassi: The Next Generation but dropped ‘The Next Generation’ part for this 10th season.  This was quite fun to watch, but I’d imagine teens and pre teens would enjoy it more than I did.

Hi Bryan Here….

Oh GoBots.  You will always hold a special place in my heart.  You are like the HD-DVD to bluray.  Gone too soon.  In Kevin Smith’s ‘Clerks 2, Jason Lee’s character Lance Dowds references the Gobots as the “K-Mart” of Transformers.  This is very true.  In every way, shape, and form, the Transformers have outsold and outdone the Gobots.  And the Gobots were first on the scene one year before Transformers ever were.  There are tons of similarities between the two universes.  For instance, Gobots came from Gobotron and a year later the Transformers came from Cybertron.  But even the Gobots with their generic brand, it is still a good cartoon by the great team of Hanna-Barbera and quite fun.

Hi Bryan Here…

This past weekend I was fortunate enough to get to experience Kevin Smith’s latest film, “RED STATE” in Kansas City, Missouri.  This was, to say the least, one of my BEST film experiences i have ever had.  To be a part of this event was like being a part of history in the making.  At least that is what it felt like to me.  I first remember hearing that Kevin Smith (the Clerks & Mallrats guy) was writing and planing to make a horror film.  A political horror film at that.  This was a couple of years ago or more.  after i first heard this news, I thought to myself, “This could be something great.  Kevin can write dialogue like no one else and with his talent of writing, he can make one hell of a horror film.  But would it be comedic?  Would it have all the dick and butt-hole jokes like the rest of films have? I can’t wait to find out.”  And from what transpired at the Midland AMC Theatre on March 12th, 2011 was heavily drenched with heart, soul, courage, great filmmaking, Star Wars, and LOVE.

Die Hard 5 Is On The Way

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 5th, 2010

A script has been written already and some changes are being made and some knots are being loosened, but yes, another Die Hard film will be in the works.  Maybe as soon as 2011 if everything goes to plan.

Now I love the first three Die Hard films.  The character “John McClane” is such an amazing character, that I wish he had his own TV series on HBO.  At least he has his own comic now.  Available HERE.

The 4th Die Hard film, “Live free or Die Hard” did not have the guts to be what it should have.  Instead we got a half-assed attempt at a cool movie with Kevin Smith.

The proper way to do a 5th Die Hard movie would have a really tight script.  Have the amazing action sequences and drama.  Add to that some really funny dialogue so we can get a bit of the humor in there.  Then get a director/producer team who know what they are doing.  Maybe a Tarantino produced film directed by Guy Ritchie, or perhaps directed by Doug Liman.

Just suggestions.  But good suggestions.  I would love to see a 5th Die Hard movie.  Who would you like to see make Die Hard 5?

More News on the Preacher Movie Adaptation

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 1st, 2010

This is utterly the best comic book I have ever read.  If you have not read these books please please read them.  You can find them HERE.

For the past decade or so, this book has been trying to get made by numerous companies and people.  First off it was set up by Kevin Smith at view Askew studios with a $25 million dollar budget, but fell through then it got transferred to be an HBO series starring James Marsden as the lead Jesse Custer.  It got as far as make-up tests for a character called Arse-Face which if you sear well enough you will be able to find the AWESOME tests online.

Then Sam Mendes of American Beauty and Road to Perdition fame wanted to make this adaptation work.  Sadly it did not work out.

Add a few more companies and producers and directors over the next few years trying to get this project off the ground all to have it a NO-GO.

So producer Neil Moritz is still trying to get this made as writer John august has writing the screenplay which will be a series of films.  What we know now is that at least the first film for now will be an “R” rating and that is faithful to the comic and also being written for a more broader audience in ways to make money and a bigger crowd into it.  In addition to that August and Moritz have been looking for the right director.  Joe Carnahan, who recently made The A-Team has expressed interest in wanting to make this.  Robert Rodriguez and Mark Steven Johnson have also expressed interest in this film.

Personally I want Quentin Tarantino to helm this project or maybe Zack Snyder.

Who would you want to see cast and helm this project.  Please comment and let me know.

OK, well maybe not them so much, anymore, but you get my point. ‘American Psycho‘ – the book by Bret Easton Ellis that made a 2000 movie with Christian Bale, evolved into a musical? Yup, you read that one right. Off-Broadway theater company, Second Stage is going to present the U.S. premiere. This has been discussed and debated, but ultimately it’s happened and coming to America next!

Hello Jana here,

downton-abbey-logo

Downton Abbey‘ has taken the TV series platform that Americans are familiar with, turned it on its ear, polished it to a British-shine and showed us what a witty, elegant and proper thing it could be. Unless you’ve been living in a cave, you know the premise. And  if you’ve been living in a cave, I’ll give you a rundown so you’re caught up. Lord Crawley sees his family heritage, especially the grand country home Downton Abbey, as his mission in life. The death of his heir aboard the Titanic means distant cousin Matthew Crawley, a Manchester lawyer, suddenly is next in line and accepts moving onto the vast estate with his even more modernist, socially engaged mother, who clashes with his lordship’s domineering, conservative mother, the dowager. Marrying off the daughters is another concern. Meanwhile, the butler presides over a staff which serves the family, but also lead most of their entire lives in the servants’ quarters, intriguing amongst themselves.

The Golden Globes were last night and Tina Fey and Amy Poehler killed it. They were amazing.  Even former president Bill Clinton showed up to talk about Spielberg’s ‘Lincoln‘.  Even though I really liked the film ‘Argo‘, I was shocked when it won best film and director for Ben Affleck. I was happy to see ‘Django Unchained‘ win for best supporting actor for Christoph Waltz and screenplay for Tarantino. If this is any pre-cursor to the Oscars, I’d be completely let down if ‘Argo‘ takes it all.  Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great film, but not the best film of the year.  I expect it to and want it to win the best adapted screenplay.  Just my opinion.  Below are the full results from last night’s show.
