THE LIGHTHOUSE – Film Review!
In the most intense “Odd Couple” story-line, packed with phenomenal performances and a thick 1890’s New England dialect drowning in that ocean juice called rum, Willem Dafoe plays a salty keeper of a lighthouse where a new young man (Robert Pattison) is instructed to help out with the grunt work for a long four weeks together in ‘The Lighthouse‘. From writer-director Robert Eggers (The VVitch), comes this darkly comedic tale of two strangers, forced to live and work with one another in claustrophobic quarters, where alcohol takes over their sanity as creatures and storms start to rear their ugly heads.

Cruel Intentions: The 90’s Musical – Theatre Review!
“Cruel Intentions: The 90’s Musical is a satisfying night of sensual bliss – and it shouldn’t be missed!”
Just in time to commemorate National Goth Day, The Wyly Theatre in Dallas opened its doors on 5/22 to a risqué musical based on the classic cult film: Cruel Intentions (1999). The stylish lounge was abuzz for opening night of ‘Cruel Intentions: The ‘90s Musical’ as attendees picked up their tickets; each one accompanied by a trendy slap bracelet. As the audience filled the black box theatre auditorium, dark tufted walls and dim lighting set the intimate mood for this scandalous dramedy. Get ready for a late night swim with the cast of ‘Cruel Intentions: The ‘90s Musical’ as they offer up the decade’s best songs with sequenced dance moves, infectious hilarity and yes – put a spotlight on an infamous blue moon.
Booksmart – Film Review!
“Every generation needs representation and ‘Booksmart’ is a solid addition to the canon of teen films.”
Being accepted into a university, let alone ‘Ivy League’ can require years of preparation. But imagine dedicating every waking moment to the pursuit of education, only to find out your slacker classmates (who have never sacrificed a social calling) will attend equally prestigious colleges? That’s exactly where two lifelong friends find themselves in Olivia Wilde’s directorial debut, ‘Booksmart’. This whacky comedy goes for the fail-safe blunder-year belly laughs, but it also distinguishes itself by spotlighting themes of feminism, LGBTQ liberation and the rarely displayed accuracies of life as a young woman.
‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ – 4K UHD Review!
THE FILM
(Film Review Portion Written By Audrey Evans)
Your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is back, but this time he has a fellowship of web-warriors from other dimensions to save the day. In a market currently flooded with Marvel, one might scoff at the idea that ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse‘ has anything new to offer, but prepare for a fresh spin on this radioactive world. This ‘Spider-Man‘ is hilarious, bold and inclusive. It not only reflects diversity in its artistic approach, but also in its cast of characters – and above anything else, the animation is absolutely unparalleled!
The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part: Film Review!
Inclusiveness has become popular and profitable for both retailers and manufactures in the last few years. Our products, hobbies and now even movies are less gender specific – thanks to a more broad-minded culture. In ‘Lego Movie 2: The Second Part,’ the latest addition to build on the LEGO universe, we’re introduced to this growing ideal through a spectrum of sparkly new toys. If audiences can look past the glitter bombs of goofiness and that shamelessly uninspired title, admirable lessons can be found in the importance of imagination, as well as in the relationships between friends and siblings.

‘First Man’ Film Review!
Director Damien Chazelle has boldly departed from his usual song and dance (‘Whiplash’, ‘La La Land’) for a character study about one of America’s most famous, but equally mysterious heroes: Neil Armstrong (Ryan Gosling). It’s rare to find an individual that hasn’t heard of the moon landing, but ask them about Neil himself? That’s a different story. ‘First Man’ tries to peek behind the helmet into the private life of Apollo 11’s commanding astronaut, but what we ultimately discover about this rocket man is far less interesting than the mission itself. Despite Chazelle’s dedication to his goal, the outcome is a confusingly toned, disconnected and unrevealing biopic that never quite makes a solid landing.
Film Review: ‘A Star Is Born’!
It’s not surprising that ‘A Star Is Born’ underwent the fourth rebirth with remakes on the rise. The latest version released in 1976 starred Barbra Streisand, but the 1954 version featuring Judy Garland arguably reigns supreme. Perhaps the track record this story has with the academy drove the motivation (2 out of 3 winning Oscars) or maybe this was an opportunity to introduce a classic to a younger audience. Whatever the case, Bradley Cooper had quite the task of not only acting in and directing ‘A Star Is Born’, but presenting this familiar narrative in a refreshing way. Yet in true underdog fashion, he may have just produced the best picture of the year.
Film Review: ‘The Hate You Give’!
More than fifty years have passed since the founding of the Black Panthers in 1966: a political organization determined to contest police brutality against African Americans. Although the party officially dismantled in 1982, their fight for civil rights has sadly remained relevant into the new century and their core beliefs continue to inspire social justice. Adapted from the 2017 award-winning novel, ‘The Hate U Give’ is a commanding film that adds to the Black Lives Matter movement and gives another voice to those who have unfairly lost their lives at the hands of men and women in blue. Don’t let the young-adult label fool you, because this engaging movie doesn’t hold back and packs serious ammunition!

Theatre Review: ‘The Lion King’!
Ever since ‘The Lion King’ (1994 film) debuted in movie theaters, the musical’s popularity has conquered more than just that box office. Only third in line to the thrown of Disney’s top-grossing films, it was inevitable that this animated picture would be adapted into a stage production. Satisfying the lingering hunger of audiences, ‘The Lion King’ (1997 musical) is not only Broadway’s third longest-running show, but it surpassed the film’s success as Broadway’s top-grossing musical ever. Combined with phenomenal puppetry, vibrant costumes, a sensational set design and a disreputably epic soundtrack, it’s easy to see why ‘The Lion King’ has been crowned the best. Be prepared for a royal experience—this interactive musical will pounce on your emotions and leave your heart roaring with excitement!
Film Review: ‘Hotel Artemis’!
Writer Drew Pearce, best recognized for Iron Man 3 (2013) and Mission Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015), has entered his first directorial credit into the heated competition of summer blockbusters. Set up with a unique concept of a secret hotel/emergency-room for criminals in futuristic Los Angeles, ‘Hotel Artemis’ sounds promising on paper, right? But upon execution, the result is a mediocre thriller whose only saving grace is the appearance of Jeff Goldblum and a few comical one-liners from supporting cast.
