Hey guys, Jana here,

Molly’s Game‘ is the upcoming adaptation of the book of the same name by Molly Bloom, an Olympic-class skier who was, not just young and beautiful but the woman behind  the world’s most exclusive high-stakes poker game. She ran this for 10 years before being arrested in the middle of the night by 17 FBI agents hefting automatic weapons. This high-level game brought in not just Hollywood’s elite, but sports stars, business wizards and even the Russian mob. With everything stacking against her, the one ally she can count on is her criminal defense lawyer who learns there are more layers to Bloom than what the media lets on.

Who would have thought that the unassuming red envelopes peppering the post would prove such a force with a crippling bite, but Netflix has proven time and again why streaming services are here to stay, not only stay, but compete with big theaters. In the past we’ve seen sequels go straight to the VOD service, we’ve seen original series go the same and we’re seeing original films, first run releases sign with them for distribution rights. The streamer has one more mark to add to it’s tally with ‘Beasts Of No Nation‘.

Idris Elba Racing To The Small Screen!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Dec 1st, 2014

Hey guys, Jana here,

idris-elba-ok

Idris Elba has a face that immediately calls to mind a number of characters and films. Maybe it’s BBC’s ‘Luther’, the ever-vigilant god Heimdall guarding Asgard in ‘Thor‘, ‘Prometheus‘, or ‘Pacific Rim‘, the point is, he makes everything memorable. This will be true when he toplines a documentary series about racing for Discovery Communications network.

Good gravy, man, this film looks so intense that I might have to cover my eyes through most of it. And I know we all love Idris Elba. He has  been excellent in everything has has said “yes” to in the past decade including playing Stringer Bell in HBO’sThe Wire‘, ‘Luther‘, Nelson Mandela, and ‘Pacific Rim‘. The guy has an epic level of charisma. But in this new film ‘No Good Deed‘, he is SCARY-AS-HELL!

Blu-ray Review: ‘Molly’s Game’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 28th, 2018

THE FILM

(This film portion was written by Beka Perlstein)

Do you have a girl crush on Jessica Chastain? Do you have a man crush on Idris Elba? If you have any combination of the two, Molly’s Game is going to make you have all the feels. This is a well done film with all the right players and script that packs a punch. Aaron Sorkin (screenplay and first time director) has taken the novel Molly’s Game and turned it into a film that at a run time of two hours and twenty minutes seems fast paced and doesn’t waste your time. While I know literally nothing about poker, this movie kept me entertained and engaged because the story wasn’t the game-it was the players.

Film Review: ‘Pacific Rim: Uprising’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 22nd, 2018

Alright lets get the plot out of the way, shall we? Pacific Rim: Uprising takes place ten years after the final battle of the first film in which Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba) gave his life to stop the Kaiju attacks. Stacker’s son, Jake, is played by John Boyega of Star Wars fame and is a promising Jaeger (the big robots) pilot who quit his training and does some underground criminal activity at the start of the film. The Jaeger program has evolved since we last saw the program where a new, younger crew defends the planet. A young girl creates her own Jaeger and is captured with Jake, which leads them to both join/rejoin the program. Of course a rogue Jaeger seems to be causing trouble and might be working with the Kaiju to reopen The Breach and release new monsters. Jake teams up with his former rival Nate (Scott Eastwood) and the young new recruits to stop the World from being destroyed and honor his father’s legacy.

Film Review: ‘The Mountain Between Us’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 29th, 2017

Rebecca S., here….

In modern terms, a unicorn is a sought after item of idea that you can never have; a fabled creature and impossible to capture. The perfect date night movie is the unicorn of our times. Speaking in stereotypes, men are said to want comedy, death defying action-adventure, and it would be great if someone got shot or maimed. Women are said to want lighthearted flirting, sincere laughter and a beautiful backdrop in which a woman is swept off of her feet by a gorgeous man. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you The Mountain Between Us. The answer to your date night woes. A unicorn.

Film Review: ‘[The Dark Tower]’!!

by Janet White on Aug 5th, 2017

Hello Everyone, Janet W. here…

From the warped, creative mind of Stephen King comes a story of the oldest of battles, good versus evil. The master of the weird provided eight books in The Dark Tower series for Nikolaj Arcel, the director, to mold and shape for our viewing pleasure. Jake Chambers (Tom Taylor), a seemingly typical kid, awakes from slumber with his walls and the ground shaking. Natural disaster? No, because it happens far too often. Visions plague Jake’s and the earthquakes are the result, but why? What is it about Jake? He will journey far (and I mean FAR) to discover the truth. Read the rest of this entry »

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

the-oscars-thumbnail

The 89th Oscars were announced today. These are supposed to be the Best Achievements in Filmmaking on all levels. However, year after year, The Academy and “their infinite wisdom” choose to pick dull films that should never be nominated. In fact, I bet you could go through most of the Winners of each year and realize you only watched that film or performance once and never thought about it again. At least The Academy had a good bit of diversity this year, but other than that – these Oscar nominations are boring, dull, and made me go to sleep just watching the equally not-fun announcement telecast.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Jungle Book’!

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

THE FILM

How many renditions have there been of ‘The Jungle Book‘? More than a dozen over the years for sure, and it seems like Disney has more than just one project of ‘The Jungle Book‘ in play at the moment, or shall I say ‘The Jungle Book‘, meaning Disney has one and Warner Bros. has one.  The first project is Jon Favreau’s version, which is a live-action film, based on Rudyard Kipling’s famous book. The film itself is stunningly beautiful, as we see in the first shot of the film, which is deep inside the jungle with the young Mowgli running and hopping through the trees. The use of 3D here was actually quite good, specifically the amount of depth it gave the film and surrounded you with all that is the jungle.

Yes, we are finally getting that ‘Pacific Rim‘ sequel we have always wanted, but again, it won’t be directed by Guillmero Del Toro. Instead, it will be directed by Steven S. We’ve talked before about the newest nominee for the animated-to-live-action treatment, ‘The Jungle Book‘. Rudyard Kipling’s novel is being given a lot of attention right now, both from Warner Bros. and Disney. There was a year where we got two films about dueling magicians, ‘The Prestige‘ and ‘The Illusionist‘. We got two animated films about bugs with ‘A Bug’s Life‘ and ‘Antz‘. I don’t get it, but apparently there’s no such thing as too many projects on the same subject, case in point, the over-saturation in comic book ventures.

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 16th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

la-et-mn-nelson-mandela-movie-release-date-201-001

There have been numerous films, television programs, and documentaries that have discussed the life of Nelson Mandela. Not too mention the treasure trove of books, biographies, and interviews you can read and watch detailing his beliefs and politics. And Justin Chadwick’s narrative film ‘Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom‘ is yet another addition to the ever expanding universe of Mandela. Adapted by William Nicholson from Mandela’s autobiography of the same name, this two and a half hour film seems like a long slow walk indeed, with too much to cover and some cheese sprinkled here and there. Although actor Idris Elba’s performance of Mandela is one of the best I’ve ever seen, this long walk could have been better.

And we’re back with the first non-Iron-Man sequel in the Marvel universe with ‘Thor: The Dark World‘, with the entire cast back ready for more saving the universe and defeating evil. However, this time around, the sequel felt uneasy and a little bit off, as it dragged in the mid-section quite a bit, or when Tom Hiddleston’s Loki (Thor’s adopted brother) is not on screen. Sure, the main event is Thor himself (Chris Hemsworth), but he seems to take a back seat for most of the film, as the co-stars really drive this movie as Thor smashes his hammer from foe to foe.

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Prometheus’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 8th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

51LgMTLgjVL

“In space no one can hear you scream.”

We have all been hearing about a movie called ‘Prometheus’ for sometime now, and all of us fans have been trying to piece the puzzle together on what it has to do with Ridley Scott’s ‘Alien’ film.  Since Scott directed ‘Prometheus’ and the original ‘Alien’ film, there has to be some sort of connection from what we have seen from the trailers, right?  The filmmakers told us that ’Prometheus’ would be a prequel to the ‘Alien’ film.  After seeing ’Prometheus’, I can say that it’s a very early prequel.  I’m  certainly happy Scott returned to this universe, because the ‘Alien’ franchise has been in a state of decay for a number of years starting with the 4th installment and then onto the ‘Alien vs. Predator’ series.  So, I was truly hoping to get an original film, but with strong ties to the ‘Alien’ franchise.  The question is, did it work?

Film Review: ‘Alex Cross’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 18th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

‘Alex Cross’ was such a let down. James Patterson’s novel or novels about a clever cop did not adapt well to this particular film.  I feel like this movie could have been 100 times better than it was.  I think it was in the wrong hands from start to finish and it just completely imploded on itself.  Maybe this will make money in the box office due to Tyler Perry’s fan-base wanting to see something completely different from the actor than what he normally does, but I don’t see people giving a second though, or really even a first thought while watching this poorly made movie.

The filmmakers told us that ‘Prometheus’ would be a prequel to the ‘Alien’ film.  After seeing ‘Prometheus’, I can say that it’s a very early prequel.

Hi, Bryan Here…

We’ve talked about Del Toro’s Pacific Rim project before on the site.  We know it about humans driving enormous robots to fight off a bunch of giant monsters who have invaded Earth.  We also know that Charlie Day, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, and Charlie Hunnam are in the film.  It is slated to be released in the summer of 2013.  Well, now Warner Bros. have officially released the official plot synopsis to make us all giddy.

Bryan Reviews ‘Luther Season 2’!!! (A DVD Review)

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 2nd, 2011

Hi Bryan Here….

I never heard of this series before I got it for review.  But I did know of the actor Idris Eba.  Idris is best known for his role as Stringer Bell in HBO’s The Wire.  And I must say that other than Stringer Bell, this series ‘Luther’ Elba’s character might be just as good as Stringer Bell.  John Luther is AWESOME  in this self title series.  Sadly, I never saw the first series, but only this second series which is only a very short four episodes.  That’s weird.  And I hear Luther has been renewed for  third season.  They must do things differently over in the UK.  But this is a solid series.  A great dark and adult mystery revolving around psychotic killers.

Blu-Ray Releases for January 6th, 2014

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 6th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan  Here…

blu-ray

It’s been a long while since I’ve done a Blu-ray column for the site. Hell, it might be two years since the last Blu-ray release column was released here. But I figure since it’s 2015 and there aren’t any apocalyptic scenarios or a rat infestation in the house yet, so now must be as good a time as any to start this fun column back up. As usual in this article, you will get some info about the disc and the extras that come with the movie as well as a personal opinion about the movie and a picture-link to purchase the film over at AMAZON where you can save quite a bit of money, and it will give a small percentage kick back to this site so we can continue bringing you excellent stories and bizarre tales. So click on the pictures and start saving.

Hello, Jana here,

eahjE5ztbkz3ppgnK0e7ACX1oUY

Disney has always been more than just an animated studio, but when you produce such awesomeness as ‘Sleeping Beauty‘, ‘Robin Hood‘, ‘Peter Pan‘, ‘Aladdin‘ and ‘Beauty and the Beast‘ it’s not something that is always remembered. Plus, we begin life learning that a Disney movie is something animated with catchy songs, at least that’s what my kids learned first. The studio has been finding different ways to get more bang for their buck for a long time. That’s why there will be a celebrated release, MAYBE a sequel in theaters, then a third or more straight to DVD. Take that same movie with established characters and it pops up on the Disney Channel as a brand new animated series. Not to mention the obligatory Disney park tie-in and the countless branding options from clothing to toys to bedding and all things in between.

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 12th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

1355416686-golden_globe_awards

Here are the nominees for the 2014 Golden Globe Awards. Wow, there were a lot of snubs here. And how did ‘Rush‘ make the list for Best Picture? No way! And what about ‘The Way Way Back‘, ‘Mud‘, or ‘Short Term 12‘ not being nominated? For shame. Let me know what you think of this nominee list?
