Gary Oldman Joins ‘Robocop’ Remake!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 23rd, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here…

Gary Oldman has just signed on to star in MGM’s remake of ‘Robocop’.  If you didn’t know that ‘Robocop’ was being remade, well now you do.  Blasphemy, I know.  Joel Kinnaman will play Alex Murphy/Robocop with Jose Padilha directing.  Kinnaman is best known for his role on ‘The Killing’ on AMC.  Padilha has directed a few documentaries along with ‘Elite Squad’.  Needless to say, I have no hope for this film.

Blu-ray Review: ‘The Hitman’s Bodyguard’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 22nd, 2017

THE FILM

On paper, ‘The Hitman’s Bodyguard‘ sounds like a solid gold winner. You have Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson in a violent action-comedy with enough “motherfucks” for two films, that is directed by the guy who made ‘The Expendables 3‘ – Patrick Hughes. Those looking for a ‘Deadpool‘ style character from Reynolds will be disappointed, as he’s the straight arrow here, or as straight as Reynolds could possibly be. Samuel L. Jackson on the other hand is amped up to 11, as he plays Kinkaid, an assassin for hire who will testify in a global crime ring against a foreign mad man, played by Gary Oldman, complete with a hard Russian accent.

If you’re like me, then you have grown to love filmmaker Christopher Nolan over the years. Come December 19th, most of his films will be released on 4K UHD for the first time ever. The films include the ‘Dark Knight Trilogy‘, ‘Inception‘, ‘The Prestige‘, ‘Interstellar‘, and the recent ‘Dunkirk‘. Each film will come with HDR as well, meaning a richer and deeper looking image for each movie. Each film will feature extras, the standard Blu-ray Disc, and Digital Copies of each movie. The whole collection will retail at about $150 with the ‘Dark Knight Trilogy‘ retailing at around $70. Of course with the holidays coming up, expect big discounts everywhere for these.

Film Review: ‘Sunny in the Dark’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 19th, 2016

Fernando M., Here…

SITD_COLOR_012615.00_16_08_05.Still039

Nowadays we tend to think of independent cinema as anything that plays at “Angelika” theaters that doesn’t involve special effects.  They usually star Gary Oldman and/or have people speaking in British accents.  Sure, all these are “independent,” but we forget that there are even smaller movies out there; there actually exist movies that are produced and created by small studios in real communities.  Sunny in the Dark is one of those.

Film Review: “Dracula Untold”!!

by Woozie on Oct 9th, 2014

Hi, Suzanne here…

Luke-Evans-in-Dracula-Untold

We all know the basic story of Count Dracula as told by Bram Stoker, but in Dracula Untold, director Gary Shore aims to provide further insight into the reasons a man would choose to be evil. In spite of the big budget that went into creating this film, the movie falls short of that goal and even the scare we come to expect from vampire films.

Every actor with any success has that one certain film that locks their position in the industry as a solid player and worthy of being called up to the show. Deciding which picture is the defining moment in their careers is always up for discussion. Tonight I’m talking about Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter. These two names have been paired since 1989 when they posed as Bill & Ted on an Excellent Adventure. In recent interviews, Winter gave out some details about the highly anticipated third film in the bodacious franchise! Before, we get to those, let’s talk about their careers.

Gal Gadot Joins Kevin Costner On ‘Criminal’!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Aug 13th, 2014

Hey guys, Jana here,

NEgw0xbUfpOHjn_3_b

Those of us watching comic book news, or DC movie news in particular, already know who Gal Gadot is. If you’ve been a fan of the ‘Fast and Furious‘ franchise you knew who she was before I did. I wasn’t a huge fan of those films, but once I found out she had been cast as Wonder Woman in the ‘Batman v Superman‘ film coming from Zack Snyder I hit www.imdb.com and discovered that I had seen her in the ‘Fast and Furious‘ films, but she hadn’t really made much of an impression on Hollywood other than that.

Top 10 List of Reboots We Don’t Want To See!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 8th, 2014

Paul N., Here…

Terminator-5-TV-Series

Like Bill Murray once said, “he’s got to be stopped. And I have to stop him.” You might have thought he was talking about a weather-predicting rodent, but no, he was actually talking about studio executives (the “he” is collective). Hollywood, like any business, is in it to make money. Therefore, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that they choose to rehash tried and true film formulas over and over again rather than take a chance on something new. While this is understandable (albeit infuriating), it doesn’t excuse the idea that EVERYTHING deserves to be re-made. Some films, like priceless art, should never be re-made and re-sold. Every time a classic film gets re-made, audiences hold their collective breaths and hope that it won’t be a straight shot in “the feels” (that nostalgic part of your brain that remembers, with fondness, all your pop culture favorites).

Michael “explosion” Bay is releasing his latest bastardization of 80’s culture unto the world in the shape of the beloved “heroes in a half shell”. In case you haven’t been following, this has been one cluster mess after another. From alien origins to white-washed villains, this movie begs the questions: “does Michael Bay hate the 80’s? Did he have some traumatically horrific experience with toys when he was a kid? Why does he have to take a giant dump on our collective fond memories time after time?”  Read the rest of this entry »

The Top 10 Perfectly Cast Movie Roles!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 18th, 2014

Paul N., Here…

doc_brown_marty

Top Ten Perfectly Cast Roles

The Bard of Avon said it best, “Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.” Some actors are great, and shine in everything they do (Leonardo DiCaprio, Gary Oldman, Daniel Day-Lewis). Some actors are smart enough to pick roles that best use their limited skill sets (Keanu Reeves). This list takes a look at the perfect pairing of actor and role. In this list, you will find a pairing of actor and role so great that the actor ceases to be themselves and instead makes the character take on a life of its own. These pairings are so uniquely theirs that you can’t imagine anyone else taking their place should Hollywood have the audacity to try.

Film Review: ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 11th, 2014

Ben K., Here…

Back in 2011, I ended my “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” review excited about what the future held for the rebooted series. As the screen went dark and the credits of “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” began to roll, I realized my high expectations had been met just three years later. If “Rise” hit all the right notes of an introductory chapter, then “Dawn” was even more on pitch with the rising action of a second act.

Film Review: ‘Robocop’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 11th, 2014

Hi, Bryan Here….

Joel Kinnaman

Over the past year, I’ve been writing stories on the upcoming ‘Robocop‘ remake. As I found out more and more information about this reboot of the franchise, I was becoming less and less excited about it. It might of been the fact that it was getting a PG-13 rating, the change in the suit, or many of the other differences that were popping up from the original 1987 film that starred Peter Weller. Hell, even Weller himself said he was not looking forward to the remake and even compared his 1987 film to the likes of ‘Casablanca‘, which is hilarious.

Guy Ritchie Is Looking to Make A King Arthur Movie!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jan 28th, 2014

Guy Ritchie (2)

Tale as old as time…no, not ‘Beauty and the Beast‘. I’m talking about the King Arthur legend. The story inspired such classic movies like ‘Excalibur‘, ‘King Arthur‘, and BBC’s ‘Merlin‘. There are some less classic offerings from ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail‘ and Disney’s 1963 animated ‘The Sword in The Stone‘. But I digress.

Here’s The New Trailer for The ‘Robocop’ Remake!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 7th, 2013

Jana B., Here…

 RoboCop+remake

I just checked out the new Robocop trailer. “Why is America so Robo-phobic?” is the phrase I plan on working into every conversation I have for the foreseeable future. This phrase is uttered by the badly rugged Samuel L. Jackson. So far in the 2:26 minute long trailer we see some awesome CG effects which stands to reason if you’re watching a movie about a cyborg policeman, or any movie made in 2013. Long gone are the days of non-computerized special effects.

Hi, Bryan Here….

Good news for your Tarantino fans out there.  Actually, I don’t know whether to be happy or angry about this.  Lionsgate and Miramax are releasing a big Tarantino movie set on bluray on November 20th.  It will contain 8 films and two bonus discs.  This kind of sucks, because I imagine most of us already own all of these on bluray already individually.  Now we have to purchase all of these again.  And, why are the ‘Kill Bill’ films not in one film like we have been promised for years now.  I will admit, the artwork is cool from MondoTees, but I can’t justify purchasing this, for two extra bonus discs.  These look to be the same blurays that we already have.  And why did they not wait till next year to release this, so they could include ‘Django Unchained’?    Official press release below.

Hi Bryan Here…..

The 84th annual Academy Award nominations are in.  There are a couple of surprises that I was very happy to see on here and tons of disappointment.  It looks like the Academy went with 9 Best Picture noms this year rather than 10.  They also only went with 3 noms for make up which I can think of others, and only two for original song.  Was this a time issue, so that the event would be over on time for once rather than have all 5 songs being sung?  I don’t like it, but that’s how it is this year.  Below you will see each category with my thoughts.  Enjoy.

Record Store Purchase Reviews

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 30th, 2010

I recently went to Good Records on lower Greenville and found some excellent used vinyl and some new vinyl as well.  I got:

The Rolling Stones: Exile on Main St. (standard edition vinyl) – Remastered

This is a two vinyl set remastered on 180 gram vinyl.  It sounds PERFECT.  I haven’t heard this album in  a long time, and when I first put it on, it was like hearing for the first time all over again.  Every song sounded magical.  New even.

Ventilator Blues, Casino Boogie, Torn and Frayed, and Shine a Light are my favorites on this album.  Blues, Rock, R&B, and Country riddle this album all the way through.

Sadly with the standard edition of this vinyl there are no inserts of any kind and no mp3 free download.  I think for $40.00 that it should have included the download.  I also think that all new vinyl that comes out should include the free mp3 download of the album.  Sadly it does not work that way.  I also did not want to shell out the $250.00 for the mega super awesome edition of this vinyl yet.  Although it includes tons of other goodies.

I highly recommend this album.  I know all of you have heard it before, but the sounds of vinyl are far superior to any cd or mp3 you might listen to.  It is a breath taking experience.

This stand the test of time.

Queen: News of the World (Vinyl)

This was in the used vinyl section and I haven’t seen this album often on vinyl.

This album being released in the 1970’s seemed to be stepping towards the Punk scene rather than the later Queen list.

It starts out with two of Queen’s more recognized tracks of the stadium anthem “We Will Rock You” and “We are the Champions” and Mercury’s brutal “Get Down – Make Love” is just pure awesome.

Other notable tracks are the sounds of “Fight From the Inside” and “Who Needs You”.

This album definitely tells you why Queen and Mercury deserve to wear the crown of Rock n Roll royalty.

Oingo Boingo: Nothing to Fear

For a time in the 1980’s Oingo Boingo was right up there with top bands performing at the time.  Richard Elfman started this amazing trippy band in the vein of Frank Zappa and Spike Jonze performing unique synth and styles of ballet music and other foreign entities.  Richard Elfman passed on his duties to younger brother Danny Elfman who is known  for his many musical scores in movies, mostly in collaboration with Tim Burton Films and of course the Futrama theme.

If you know nothing about Oingo Boingo, this album is a good place to start.  There is not a bad or soft and weak song on this album.

Songs like “Reptiles and Samurai” or “Running on a Treadmill”, or even the great “Wild Sex in the Working Class” will instantly hook you into loving this eclectic band of the 80’s.

I wish I could have seen them perform live.

Sid & Nancy Soundtrack

Another gem from the used section, one I have not actually seen before.  The soundtrack to the infamous movie Sid & Nancy.

If you have not seen this movie, go out and see it.  It is a biopic of Sid Vicious, known as the bassist for the band The Sex Pistols.  Gary Oldman played Vicious.  An excellent film and look into the life of Sid and Girlfriend Nancy.

The soundtrack is kick-ass of course.  Joe Strummer, The Pogues, Circle Jerks, Pray for Rain, and John Cale perform on this excellent soundtrack.

A great find.

Prince and the Revolution/Kiss

Sometimes when you find Prince’s KISS on vinyl and it is a single, then you know it is going to be a good day.

Not only was it the single of KISS, but the extended version which I have never heard.  I quite liked it.  A couple of minutes added to the original makes room for more dancing.

On side B is Love or Money which is not great but not bad either.  Basically I just got this album for KISS.  Also, there is a picture of 1980’s movie starlet Jaime Gertz on the back cover. Or at least what looks like her.

Great find.

Galactic: ya-ka-may

If you have not heard of the band Galactic, then you should definitely treat yourself and pick up one of their albums.  Ya-ka-may is their most recent effort and it does not dissapoint.

You can describe Galactic as Funk rubbed with jazz and soaked in a New Orleans swamp and roasted with blues and sprinkled with hip/hop.

This is New Orleans based so you know this is top notch music making.

The biggest known guests are Irma Thomas, John Boutte, and Allen Toussaint who lend their talents to this album.

“Do It Again” and “Double It”are a couple of my favorite tracks on the album.

Ya-ka-may named after New Orleans street food mixes tons of musical styles that fits perfectly together.  This album is soulful, energizing, and most of al FUNKY.

Galactic is a must listen.
