Nov/2018

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

Good news and bad news, folks. The good news is that Fox is releasing two amazing TV Shows for their Anniversary  on September 19th, being Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly from Joss Whedon. There will be new packaging and collectibles with each set. The bad news is that there still isn’t and won’t be a Blu-ray or high definition version of Buffy, which just sucks and drives a stake right through my heart. This show looks terrible and is in badly need of an HD upgrade.

Hey Browncoats! Jana here,

screen-shot-2014-07-25-at-09-27-32

Firefly. I only need that one word to raise blood pressure, inspire hopes and in some cases, cause Mandarin curses through gritted teeth. Joss Whedon’s rag-tag group of soldiers, mechanics, a courtesan, a pilot, doctor and a preacher….and Jane, have burrowed into the depths of each and every Browncoat-loving fan. We curse Fox for their ignorance in airing the episodes incorrectly and then for canceling. With only one season in our grasp, we have sustained the furious fandom that we have, calling ourselves Browncoats.

‘Firefly’ Producer Hints At A Limited Series Reboot!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 13th, 2014

Hi, Bryan Here….

Wow. The browncoats must be overjoyed right now. ‘Firefly‘ producer-writer Tim Minear discussed the possibility of a new season or reboot of the original show, which was cancelled way too soon over a decade a go. Now let me assure you, that nothing is in the works as far as a tv show right now. But let’s just go through the facts shall we?

Firefly-e1363366363608

Good news, everyone.  well, maybe the best news ever.  Joss Whedon has just announced that due to the success of the ‘Veronica Mars‘ Kickstarter campaign, which has raised over $4.3 million, that he and the Fox Network are going the same route to get one more season, consisting of 13 new episodes of their hit series ‘Firefly‘.  Joss said that everyone is on board to come back to reprise their roles, minus the deceased characters, however he hinted that we might see them in the new series in flashbacks.

Hi, Bryan Here….

With the already high anticipation of Netflix doing a fourth season of ‘Arrested Development’, they have purchased the rights to Joss Whedon’s ‘Firefly’ and will exclusively air new episodes of ‘Firefly’ on Netflix.  Production will start after Joss is done with his press tour for ‘The Avengers’.  The entire cast and crew is back minus the characters who are no longer with us from the film ‘Serenity’.  But Joss stated, “…do not fret, we have a couple of big names to add to the cast”.  He didn’t go into detail.

Hi, Bryan Here….

After two broken cables and a few Dublin Dr. Peppers later, all the technical difficulties are fixed and we have lift off again.  Boomstick went to the Sci-Fi Expo over in Dallas last weekend and got in on a Q&A panel with some of the ‘Firefly’ or ‘Serenity’ cast.  It was a lot of fun to say the least.   Adam Baldwin, Jewel Staite, Sean Maher, and Ron Glass were all in attendance and they let us in on some insight, funny stories, and some cool information about their time on the series amongst other endeavors.  They were all super nice and hope to have them all back at the next convention.  Enjoy the video.

Justifying the Female Villain: An Essay by Tuesday Shank!

Justifying the Female Villain

By Tuesday Shank

(Find Tuesday Shank on Twitter and Instagram!)

I stumbled through my college career. After the better part of six years, I began my work on my senior thesis. I undertook the easiest thesis I could think for myself to do: analyze a television show. My advisor’s academic expertise was gender studies. As a fan of Joss Whedon, I knew of Joss Whedon’s reputation for feminist characters and decided to use my thesis to sing Whedon’s praises.

Thus, I began my work on “Careful Jayne, You’ll Scare the Women: An Analysis of Gender Representations in the Television Show, Firefly”. I watched Firefly enough that I’m still not eager to see it again. Halfway through the semester, I just wanted to watch anything else.

Rob Zombie Heads Back to ‘The Devil’s Rejects’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 25th, 2017

Rob Zombie looks to be headed back to his roots by making yet another ‘Devil’s Rejects‘ movie. There are many people reporting about it and it seems has confirmed that his next film after his Groucho Marx movie ‘Raised Eyebrows‘, which I can’t confirm if he’s been filming that for the past few months or not. Zombie though will make another movie in that ‘Devil’s Rejects‘ universe, but it’s still unclear if it will be a sequel or a  prequel to that infamous Firefly family.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’!

THE FILM

Since the release of ‘The Force Awakens‘, Disney will be releasing a ‘Star Wars‘ film every year for the foreseeable future. Well, it’s been a year since ‘The Force Awakens‘, which means it’s time for another ‘Star Wars‘ film, and luckily for us, we get ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story‘. I’m so glad that Disney is allowing up and coming, young  filmmakers a chance to have a go at ‘Star Wars‘, because director Gareth Edwards (‘Monsters‘ and ‘Godzilla‘) has knocked it out of the park, even though there were some re-shoots with writer Tony Gilroy (‘Michael Clayton‘ and ‘The Bourne‘ films). This is the ‘Star Wars‘ film we have wanted for a long time, in that we get to see some characters do some truly amazing and badass things that we’ve never seen before, and a return to some of those classic set pieces and ships.

WWE Payback 2016: What to Expect!

by Gumbercules9000 on Apr 30th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

payback-2016-poster-2

It’s that time of year again for the PPV after Wrestlemania, which is known as Payback. Normally, this is a rather lackluster PPV when compared to the rest of the WWE events throughout the year, and this particular one seems no different, despite a couple of matches. I do expect some good moments, but I don’t expect a ton of titles to change hands here, if any really. Not only that, but we still have a ton of WWE Superstars out, including John Cena, Seth Rollins, Neville, and Randy Orton. You can add to that list Undertaker, Brock Lesnar, and Triple H not showing up, as well as The New Day not having a match either, however the latter will most likely do some promos. In other words, this just doesn’t seem like an exciting PPV at the moment. I hope I’m wrong. Maybe, just maybe Shinsuke Nakamura will show up and wrestle for two hours. Then again, maybe they’ll bring back ‘Firefly‘. Side note: why is Bray Wyatt and the Wyatt family on the poster for Payback, but they don’t have a match?

If you’re like me you’ve been on pins and needles awaiting casting information from one of the latest films covering the canon of the Marvel universe, ‘Deadpool‘. Wise-cracking Wade Wilson aka Deadpool is a fan favorite for his ass-kicking capability and his witty master of the English language. Marvel originally introduced Wilson in ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine‘ in 2009 played perfectly by Ryan Reynolds. In a somewhat strange turn of events, Reynolds confirmed that the current ‘Deadpool’ will have no connection to the character he originated in the Wolverine movie, but will be playing him again, in the new incarnation. This time around Wade Wilson, an assassin who undergoes a procedure to cure his cancer that ends up leaving him twisted and scarred but carrying superpowers. ‘Deadpool‘ is slated to begin filming in March and slated for 2016 release.

Think back to 2002 and what we were watching on TV. ‘American Idol‘ had just began it’s monumental first season, Joss Whedon’s space-western ‘Firefly‘ was being aired out of order, ‘The X-Files‘ was ending it’s 9 season run and America got it’s first look at a reality show based on a celebrity’s home-life with ‘The Osbournes‘. That’s right, the metaphorical shot heard round-the-world from the gun that would inevitably be responsible for making the Kardashian family famous for being rich and stupid took first blood with the family of ‘Black Sabbath‘ rocker, Ozzy Osbourne.

More Dallas Comic Con 2014 Coverage – The Event!!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 19th, 2014

Rebecca S. Here…

Dallas-Comic-Con-2014

This year’s Dallas Comic Con has come to a close and if you missed it- you missed a lot. This year’s Con was help at the massive Dallas Convention Center, while previous years were held at the (fun, but ridiculously laid out) Irving convention Center. The change to the larger venue effected everyone’s attitude toward the weekend. Having, almost, everything in the same area of one floor was a welcome change. The downfall here is that the site was so big and there was very little (read: no) signage to let people know where the different events were being held.

Movies have been moving to digital platforms for a long time. I still think back to the original movie collection I had when I became a total movie buff. I actually worked at a video rental store in high school called ‘The Movie Buff’. It was the greatest job in the world and set me up for a life-long fascination with film. Thinking back to that movie collection, I had over 450 VHS tapes. Over the years, I’ve had to get rid of them to make room for the newest platform of DVD’s. Way too many years later, I have no VHS tapes, but have tons of DVD’s and am now copying my collection over to a digital format.

Hello, Jana here,

A John Grisham novel is like a mug of coffee on a stormy day, a glass of wine after the kids are asleep, or even a Xanax when you want to rip someone’s head off. The point is, it’s a calming, reassuring presence. It’s going to be an intense, legal, thrill ride that has a feel-good ending. Grisham’s tried and true writing style is gripping, authentic and something that lends itself to film adaptation easily. This has been the case with ‘The Firm‘, ‘The Pelican Brief‘, ‘The Client‘ and ‘A Time to Kill‘ among several others. There is even a complete departure from his norm evident in ‘Christmas With The Kranks‘.

Joss Whedon has taken off his brown coat and hung up his Avengers costumes for the time being and has given us a laugh-out-loud and fresh telling of Shakespeare’s ‘Much Ado About Nothing‘. With amazing characters, comedy at every turn, and an excellent eye for direction, Whedon pulls off this amazing tale with grace and fun, and is different enough to stand on its own from Kenneth Branagh’s version from twenty years ago. I imagine that fans of ‘Firefly‘, ‘Buffy‘, and ‘The Avengers‘ will be first in line this weekend to support their hero Whedon, but I also expect this to gain a bigger following with a wider audience, making a decent theatrical return.

BRIDGE – Chapter Fourteen

by Justin Cline on Mar 21st, 2012

CHAPTER FOURTEEN

As always, the duality that came from channeling Polly gave Bridge a headache.  Or, in this case, worsened the one he already had.  Most humans—himself included—had difficulty maintaining a single point of focus, much less two, but here he was.  And there he was as well.  On the physical plane, he was seated in a chair in his office, gazing into the eyes of a dead man.  At the same time, his body was also floating weightlessly in space, surrounded on all sides by tiny flickering lights, hovering like fireflies. The Bishop Charlotte Reporting….

Fox has the rights to a new Punisher project, probably better called a revamp. Frankly, the series could probably stand one after the 2004 flop. Let’s hope this works out.

Hi Bryan Here….

I am so delighted to be seeing this on DVD for the first time.  I love watching old cartoons from the 60’s.  And ‘Frankenstein Jr. and the Impossibles’ was so much fun.  There were only two seasons with less than 20 episodes in all, but the rock music/action hero cartoon packed each episode with tons of great fun.  It reminds me of ‘Fraggle Rock’ meets ‘Partridge Family’ in the vein of Hanna-Barbera.  This cartoon series also made for some of the most bizarre animated sequences I might have ever seen.  I witnessed a giraffe running upright on two legs with a gun and jumps into an art easel to disappear.  No, I was not on that acid you gave me last year.  Just loads of Dr. Pepper.

Hi Bryan Here…

Did you ever think we would get an ultimate big budget Avengers film??  I didn’t.  But with he success of all these comic book films and ever since Iron Man one is where Marvel Comics pretty much took control over their characters and films was the start of this whole Avengers film.  All those years ago.

“Super” Footage from James Gunn

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 12th, 2010

James Gunn has been hard at work for quite some time on his new film entitles “SUPER”.  It is in the vein of the year’s movie “Kick-Ass”.  The film has a stellar cast including: Rainn Wilson (The Office) and Ellen Page (Juno) as the main characters with Liv Tyler, Kevin Bacon, Michael “The Rook” Rooker, Nathan Fillon (Firefly) and Linda Cardellini (Freaks and Geeks).

IMDB’s plot synopsis for this movie reads “After his wife falls under the influence of a drug dealer, an everyday guy transforms himself into Crimson Bolt, a superhero with the best intentions, though he lacks for heroic skills.”

Now James Gunn is no stranger to the super hero genre.  He made a little film several years back which I think is one of the funniest movies out there.  It is called “The Specials” and is about the 6th or 7th best super hero team in the world.  It has an all-star cast as well with Thomas Hayden Church (Sideways & Spider-man 3) and Rob Lowe to name a few.  Gunn went on to write the revamp of Dawn of the Dead and make the ever so popular movie “Slither”.

Super looks to be an amazing film and the reviews from the early screenings are stellar.  I am looking forward to this movie.  Check out the clip of Rainn Wilson and Ellen Page below.
