Film Review: ‘[Detroit]’!!
Hello Everyone, Janet W. here…
Fifty years ago (to the day I screened Detroit), atrocities occurred in Detroit, Michigan. July 25, 1967 has been a day of woe for generations past and will be for those to come. Effectively capturing the events of this time, Detroit offers a raw in-your-face journey into the debasement of human beings simply because of their color. Such actions led to outrage which brewed to boiling over due to criminal misconduct and murder performed by police officers escalated to several days of rioting and worse. Black people helping the crooked cops unlawfully abuse and imprison other black people. Read the rest of this entry »

Kathryn Bigelow is the director behind ‘Zero Dark Thirty‘, ‘The Hurt Locker‘ and ‘K19: The Widowmaker‘ and she’s got a new project in the early stages of production. So early it’s just called an ‘Untitled Detroit Project‘ at the moment. It’s a crime drama written by Mark Boal, set in Detroit 1967. The project will tackle a police raid resulting in one of the largest citizen uprisings in United States’ history spanning 5 days. It’s planned for a 2017 release date just in time for the 50th anniversary of the riots.
‘Get Out’ is Coming back to theaters for FREE!
On February 19th, a total of 55 AMC Theaters across the nation will show the Oscar nominated and award winning film ‘GET OUT’ for FREE! You can see the list of theaters down below by clicking the link. ‘GET OUT’ is one of the best films of 2017 and I’m so happy they are showing it for free next week. Who would have predicted that one half of the ‘Key and Peele’ show would direct a movie that would be talked about and remembered for many years to come. It’s half horror and half comedy with an excellent satire behind it all.

Below are my Top 10 Best Films and Top 3 Worst Films of 2017 that I was either blessed or, in some cases, annoyed to screen, 24 in all. Feedback is encouraged whether you agree, disagree, think I’m nuts (I am a little crazy), or if you think of a film that I reviewed which should have been included. Here you go:

Film Review: Patti Cake$!
Audrey E., here….
Step aside, Detroit. It’s Jersey’s time to rhyme! Straight out of the slums of suburbia, music-video Director Geremy Jasper serves up his feature film debut with ‘Patti Cake$’, a fresh princess tale of a maverick white rapper, Killa P, a.k.a. Patti (Danielle Macdonald). Pining to get away from her grungy surroundings and struggling family life, Patti sets off on a journey for a piece of the limelight with an unlikely pair. Perfectly mixed with a memorable soundtrack, wit and style, ‘Patti Cake$‘ manages to commend the craft of a genre that’s rightfully earned its place in Americana, while concurrently challenging the notions of race in music.
Terminator 2: Judgement Day is Getting one Hell of a Gift Set on 4K UHD!

Film Review: ‘Go North’!
Hi everyone, Bryan here….
Documentary filmmaker Matt Ogens brings his narrative screenplay to life with ‘Go North‘, which is a post-apocalyptic story with kids. Of course, we’ve seen this genre and story play out time and time again over the past several years with tons of young adult movies that involve kids in a ravaged post apocalyptic scenario. These films all run together, because they are in fact all the same movie with different titles and character names. ‘Go North‘ breaks the mold in one certain aspect, in that it doesn’t take place in a largely dilapidated big city scape in the future with hundreds of millions of dollars going to dumb CGI effects or any big over-the-top action sequences that may involve monsters, robots, zombies, or any combination of the three. Instead, this is a fairly low budget film with none of the above, which is a breath of fresh air in this over-saturated genre.
Film Review: ‘Don’t Breathe’!
Hi everyone, Bryan here…
Fede Alvarez burst onto the scene a few years ago with his short film on YouTube called ‘Ataque de Pánico!‘ It was so well received and well done that a few weeks later, Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, and Rob Tapert were calling him non-stop and even offered the Uruguayan filmmaker the chance to direct the remake of ‘The Evil Dead‘, which came out 2013 to rave reviews and fan appreciation for what it was. Since then, Fede has a few projects in the works coming up, as he is one of the top new filmmakers to watch in the horror genre.
‘The Departed’ Will Move From The Big Screen To The Small Screen!!!
Hey guys, Jana here,
Warner Bros. TV is putting together a TV series reboot of, not only an Oscar winning film, but one of my absolute favorites, ‘The Departed‘. Joining Warner Bros. in the project is Amazon Studios and Vertigo Entertainment, Initial Entertainment Group and Plan B Entertainment.
‘Beverly Hills Cop 4’ Finally Happening!
Hi everyone, Bryan here…
The ‘Beverly Hills Cop‘ franchise seems to be never ending, or at least never getting up off the ground. That being said, it looks like a 4th film with Eddie Murphy is finally gaining steam once again. We’ve seen this before. Hell, we’ve seen a TV series try to take off, but never happen with this franchise. Maybe this time, it will actually happen, and we will get the Detroit cop back in California once again, solving a crime.

Josh Duhamel and Mark Wahlberg Return For ‘Transformers: The Last Knight’!!!
Hey guys, Jana here,
The ‘Transformers‘ franchise has been at a low point for me over the last few films, maybe it was the director, maybe it was the story line, regardless of the reason, the next film in the tunnel has some news that is a little more exciting. Director Michael Bay is returning for the fifth installment with Josh Duhamel.
Bad Boy Family Reunion Tour Is Announced With Dates!!!
Hey guys, Jana here,
The Notorious B.I.G. left a musical legacy behind that is continuing to grow and evolve through the years. To celebrate the life of the late musician and Bad Boy Records, the first ever “Bad Boy Family Reunion” concerts will take place in Brooklyn, Biggie’s hometown, this Friday and Saturday which will line up with Biggie’s birthday which falls on May 21. If you can’t just make the trip this weekend, the full reunion tour may make it to you.
‘Insidious: Chapter 4’ Will Scare You Stupid In 2017!!!
Hey guys, Jana here,
Blumhouse is one of my favorite names when it comes to awesome scary movies and that name just popped up on the radar with another film sure to scare even the most stalwart film-goer. This company doesn’t just produce one-off horror flicks, they develop franchises and give us sequels that are every bit as awesome as the originals, some of these are ‘The Purge‘, ‘Ouija‘, ‘Paranormal Activity‘ and the ‘Insidious‘ powerhouse. The latter among these has got another installment headed our way with ‘Insidious: Chapter 4‘.
Taylor Kitsch Writes, Directs & Stars In ‘The Pieces’!!!
Hey guys, Jana here,
Taylor Kitsch (‘Lone Survivor‘) is prepping his directorial debut and will star in ‘Pieces‘. He’s also written the script for the drama depicting three best friends from Detroit who change the course of their lives by intercepting a drug run. ‘The Pieces‘ tells the story of Kyle (Kitsch), whose failure to pay a huge gambling debt puts him and his best friend (Josh Pence) lives in danger. The project stars Derek Phillips, Abigail Spencer and Pence alongside Kitsch.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Straight Outta Compton’!
Hi everyone, Bryan Here…
THE FILM
Music biopics are one of my favorite genres of film. I love seeing a musical artist or band portrayed on screen and their rise to fame, complete with how they came up with their platinum hits, warts and all. As of lately, we haven’t seen a ton of these biopics with the exception of the excellent ‘Love & Mercy‘ about Beach Boys member Brian Wilson. Most of the biopics usually focus on one person or a band and go up until they hit it big, but that’s not the case with ‘Straight Outta Compton‘, which is more of a bio-epic than a biopic. Instead of following one person, the film follows three main characters with a treasure trove of other superstar artists.
‘Straight Outta Compton’ Blu-ray & Soundtrack On Their Way!!!
Hey guys, Jana here,
The music changed the world and the movie began a whole new genre of exciting film making and it’s now ‘Straight Outta Compton‘ is making its way to your homes, SUV’s, The Bahamas, or anywhere else you want to take it for that matter. If you think just seeing it in theaters is going to be enough, think again, because this one is the Unrated Director’s Cut!
Scream Factory Presents ‘Ejecta’s Debut On Blu-Ray!!!
Hey guys, Jana here,
Writer Tony Burgess’s (‘Pontypool‘, ‘Septic Man‘ and ‘Hellmouth‘) scripted the sci-fi horror ‘Ejecta‘ which directors Chad Archibald and Matt Wiele brought to terrifying, cinematic glory. For Wiele, this is his freshman directing effort, Archibald, however has several credits to his name including ‘Kill‘, ‘The Drownsman‘ and the upcoming ‘Bite‘. ‘Ejecta‘ was produced by Jesse Thomas Cook, John Geddes and Matt Wiele through their genre production company Foresight Features and will make it’s Blu-ray debut on August 18th, 2015 from Scream Factory, in partnership with IFC Midnight.
Blu-ray Review: ‘It Follows’!!
Hi everyone, Bryan Here…
THE FILM
It’s very rare these days that a horror movie consistently delivers on genuine thrills and scares. And I’m not talking so much about the cheap “jump out and scare you tactics”. I’m talking about a deep psychological horror that lingers in your mind for days after, causing you to look over your shoulder and think twice about those strange noises you heard. Not since ‘The Babadook‘ has a movie been more terrifying than ‘It Follows‘, which is a horror film from newcomer David Robert Mitchell who wrote and directed this masterpiece of horror.
WWE: Raw Review December 15th, 2014!!
Angi S., Here…
Just 24 hours after the TLC (and Stairs) pay per view, RAW IS JERICHO! In Detroit, MI, the WWE Universe is ready to witness the Ayatollah of Rock and Rollah as interim General Manager and do his best to manage the chaos that has become the WWE’s flagship program in the absence of the Authority. The night promised to be intense as the fall out of the previous evening was hanging over the arena (looking oddly like a steel cage). How would the Best in the World at What He Does fair with such a daunting task? Let’s find out as I give my thoughts and opinions on WWE’s Dec. 15th edition of RAW!
See the ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Trailer This Thanksgiving Weekend!
Hi everyone, Bryan Here….
I’m certainly glad J.J. Abrams and Disney are releasing the first trailer for the upcoming new ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens‘ film in theaters, rather than online. I mean, it’s ‘Star Wars‘. It deserves to be on the big screen. What do we know so far? We know that Disney has chosen 30 theaters across the nation that will show the 88-second trailer before each movie playing this Thanksgiving weekend.
The Official Title Is ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’!!
Hi everyone, Bryan Here…
Well it looks like Zack Snyder and Warner Bros. has an official title for the new Batman/Superman movie, which will be called ‘Dawn of Justice‘. I bet that means Dawn of the ‘Justice League‘, which Warner Bros. has been planning for quite sometime now. The film is set to open up on may 6th, 2016 and production has officially begun.
Film Review: ‘Only Lovers Left Alive’!!
Hi, Bryan Here….
If all the Emo and Hipster kids got together and made a vampire film, it would probably play out a bit like ‘Only Lovers Left Alive‘, which has an excellent soundtrack, moody vampires who hate everything but new underground music, and talk about how much they hate everything. It gets old very fast. But instead of the Emo and Hipster kids, we got famed director Jim Jarmusch who directed ‘Down By Law‘,’ Ghost Dog: Way of The Samurai‘, ‘Coffee and Cigarettes‘, and ‘ Dead Man‘, and ‘Broken Flowers‘ to name a few – not exactly a light-weight. Jarmusch is an acquired taste like a fine 40-year old scotch, where not all people have developed a taste for the director, but those with exquisite taste love his work. I consider myself the latter. But once in a while, some of our favorite directors make a movie that is ultimately forgettable and doesn’t live up to the filmmaker’s past work. And that is where I stand with Jarmusch’s vampire film ‘Only Lovers Left Alive‘.

Film Review: ‘Robocop’!!
Hi, Bryan Here….
Over the past year, I’ve been writing stories on the upcoming ‘Robocop‘ remake. As I found out more and more information about this reboot of the franchise, I was becoming less and less excited about it. It might of been the fact that it was getting a PG-13 rating, the change in the suit, or many of the other differences that were popping up from the original 1987 film that starred Peter Weller. Hell, even Weller himself said he was not looking forward to the remake and even compared his 1987 film to the likes of ‘Casablanca‘, which is hilarious.
‘Insidious 3’ Is Happening!!!
Jana B., Here….
Three days after the sequel to ‘Insidious‘ is released for theatrical viewing, which continues the saga of the haunted Lambert family, Blumhouse Productions, Entertainment One, FilmDistrict, and Sony announced a third installment to the hit horror film that took the genre by storm in 2010. Screenwriter Leigh Whannell will lend his writing skills once more. This time without the direction of longtime collaborator James Wan. Wan just began filming Universal’s ‘Fast & Furious 7‘.

Hi Bryan Here….
I couldn’t believe my eyes when I read that headline over at Variety. Yes. There will be a prequel to ‘Jackie Brown’. The movie, titled ‘Switch’, will focus on the characters Ordell Robbie and Louis Gara once played by Samuel L. Jackson and Robert De Niro in the Tarantino ‘Jackie Brown. This prequel will take place fifteen years prior to the events of the ‘Jackie Brown’ we know. And guess who will play a younger Ordell and Louis?

With four short films by well respected and twisted horror filmmakers, you will get everything you wanted in a B-Movie fest. This second season progresses the story of a man who tries to put his family back together by earning more money in this failing economy by pleasuring women. What an excellent and fun show. Watch it.

In Sheen’s deal, he will own a considerable stake in the show. The show will follow a “mild-mannered, non-confrontational man who is ordered to attend group anger management sessions led by a therapist who could probably use some anger management himself.”
Let’s Discuss ‘The Myth of the American Sleepover’!!!
Hi Bryan Here….
I love seeing films from first-time directors. This is the first film from David Robert Mitchell and it looks great. The Blair Witch Project (Blu-ray)
This bluray was released over a month ago exclusively at BEST BUY. If you have not picked it up yet, then you can pick Blair Witch up anywhere tomorrow. While this bluray disc is the best Blair Witch has ever looked, it is far from being a demo in your home. Still tons of grain and just over all sloppy. But I believe this was the intent of the filmmakers. To make it look as real as possible. The sound isn’t really that great on the disc. Those set aside, if you liked seeing this movie all those years ago, then this is a must pick up to re-live that time and the special features are pretty good.

Hard Candy (Blu-Ray)
This was another film that was released a while ago as a Best Buy exclusive. This film made me sweat. I was on the edge of my seat the entire film. One of the most tense films I have ever seen. If you have not seen this yet, I really do not want to give anything away, but seriously buy this film if you love uber tense movies. What a thrill ride. it stars Ellen Page from “Juno”.

High Tension (Blu-ray)

A great addition to any horror collection and just in time for Halloween. Marie and Alexia are classmates and best friends. Hoping to prepare for their college exams in peace and quiet, they decide to spend a weekend in the country at Alexia’s parents’ secluded farmhouse. But in the dead of night, a stranger knocks on the front door. And with the first swing of his knife, the girls’ idyllic weekend turns into an endless night of horror.

The Human Centipede (Blu-Ray)
I saw this film a few months ago. It really did not get a wide release in theaters. IFC put it on demand for a couple of weeks and I got a chance to watch it. WOW. It is a brutal torture film in which a mad scientist/doctor makes a “Human Centipede”, by kidnapping innocent people and sewing his victims ass to mouth so they have one digestive track. This is a film to watch with others and watch their reaction. Much much joy. This is a must own for all you cinephiles out there. “During a stopover in Germany in the middle of a carefree roadtrip through Europe, two American girls find themselves alone at night when their car breaks down in the woods. Searching for help at a nearby villa, they are wooed into the clutches of a deranged retired surgeon who explains his mad scientific vision to his captives’ utter horror. They are to be the subjects of his sick lifetime fantasy: to be the first to connect people, one to the next, via their gastric system, and in doing so bring to life ‘the human centipede.”

Dre immediately falls for his classmate Mei Ying—and the feeling is mutual—but cultural differences make such a friendship impossible. Even worse, Dre’s feelings make an enemy of the class bully, and kung fu prodigy, Cheng. With no friends in a strange land, Dre has nowhere to turn but maintenance man Mr. Han (Jackie Chan), who is secretly a master of kung fu. As Han teaches Dre that kung fu is not about punches and parries, but maturity and calm, Dre realizes that facing down the bullies will be the fight of his life.

The Last of the Mohicans (Blu-Ray)
An epic adventure and passionate romance unfold against the panorama of a frontier wilderness ravaged by war. Academy Award winner Daniel Day-Lewis (Best Actor in 1989 for My Left Foot) stars as Hawkeye, rugged frontiersman and adopted son of the Mohicans, and Madeleine Stowe is Cora Munro, aristocratic daughter of a proud British Colonel. Their love, tested by fate, blazes amidst a brutal conflict between the British, the French and Native American allies that engulfs the majestic mountains and cathedral-like forests of Colonial America. What a gem of a film in high definition.

The Maltese Falcon (Blu-ray)
A beloved Bogart classic gets the high-def treatment. A gallery of high-living lowlifes will stop at nothing to get their sweaty hands on a jewel-encrusted falcon. Detective Sam Spade (Humphrey Bogart) wants to find out why – and who’ll take the fall for his partner’s murder. An all-star cast (including Sydney Greenstreet, Mary Astor, Peter Lorre and Elisha Cook Jr.) joins Bogart in this crackling mystery masterwork written for the screen (from Dashiell Hammett’s novel) and directed by John Huston. This 1941 Academy Awards® Nominee* catapulted Bogart to stardom and launched Huston’s directorial career – all with a bird and a bang.

A Nightmare on Elm St. 2010 (Blu-ray)
This remake of the beloved 1980’s classic by Wes Craven gets the remake over haul and only somewhat disappoints. You get everything you want out of the film. Jackie Earl Haley plays Freddy and he does a good job at it and there are even some straight forward shot for shot remake scenes from the original. But what is missing or shall I say what is NOT missing. Listen, I do NOT want an “in my face” reason why Freddy is Freddy. I do NOT want to know when these characters are in a dream or not until creepy shit starts happening. And I want Freddy to be the same funny one liner Freddy, which I get but only in the end. Some stuff was done right and some stuff was not. Overall I still liked it, and will see another sequel if one gets made, but the original still is the best.

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Undead (Blu-Ray)
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Undead’ is the debut feature film of Director Jordan Galland, who also penned the original screenplay, which finds the characters from Hamlet, a tip of the cap to Tom Stoppard, and a two thousand year conspiracy involving vampires and the Holy Grail. This just sounds BADASS! Must Get.
Secretary (Blu-Ray)
What a modern classic cult film this was. I love the fetish world and this films explores quite a bit of that. In an office setting no less. A true Love Story at heart. James Spader and Maggie Gyllenhaal star in the dark comedy Secretary. Praised as “daring, funny and quirkily erotic!” (Glenn Kenny, Premiere) and “sexy and highly stylized” (Gear magazine), Secretary is the story of Lee Holloway (Gyllenhaal), a young woman with a few strikes against her after a brief stay in a mental hospital, who accepts a secretarial position working at the law office of E. Edward Grey (Spader). The work seems normal at first, but somewhere between the typing, filing and coffee-making, Lee and her new boss cross the line of their professional relationship and enter into a Human Resources nightmare!

Splice (Blu-Ray)
I really liked this film. It was a very different take into the realm of sci-fi and horror. It is a bit awkward to watch, but I loved where this move took me. I have not seen it before done. Very good and highly recommended. Superstar genetic engineers Clive (Adrien Brody) and Elsa (Sarah Polley) specialize in splicing DNA from different animals to create incredible new hybrids. Now they want to use human DNA in a hybrid that could revolutionize science and medicine. But when the pharmaceutical company that funds their research forbids it, Clive and Elsa secretly take their boldest experimentation underground—risking their careers by pushing the boundaries of science to serve their own curiosity and ambition. The result is Dren, an amazing, strangely beautiful creature of uncommon intelligence and an array of unexpected physical developments. At first, Dren exceeds their wildest dreams. But as she grows and learns at an accelerated rate, her existence threatens to become their worst nightmare.
Troll 2: Nilbog Edition (Blu-Ray)
Labeled as the Best Worst Film Ever. Troll 2 does not have trolls in the entire film nor is it a sequel. If that does not capture you to want to watch this then I do not know what will. Disguised as friendly country folk, a pugnacious posse of people-eating trolls lures visitors to their town. But a family of four is about to discover this place is a real tourist trap…and they’re the prey! Now, the no-good gnomes must be destroyed before the family gets flambéed…and the world becomes a buffet in this feeding frenzy of fear! A ridiculous good time.
That is it for this week. Stay tuned for next week.
Robocop trilogy coming Bluray…
MGM/FOX announced that the Robocop trilogy will be coming to Bluray on October 5th.
If you remember the first film took place in the city of the future which was Detroit, BUT…was all filmed in the great city of Dallas. Throughout the whole movie you can see the downtown skyline and uptown landmarks.
Hopefully MGM/FOX does not screw this release up. I am hoping for behind the scenes/bloopers/commentaries/deleted scenes/and interviews from present day with the actors. Do not make this a bare bones release or …..there will be…. trouble.
No extras have been announced for this release yet.
