4K UHD Review: ‘The Dark Knight Rises’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 2nd, 2018

THE FILM

The threats of terrorism, war, chaos, and financial ruin are all too real these days.  ’The Dark Knight Rises’ dives into these issues on a massive scale, which makes any film in the Marvel universe look like mere “child’s play” (no reference to a knife-wielding murderous doll).  Compared with the other Batman movies, everything is bigger in ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and there is so much more at stake.  Not one second of this film is wasted, the writing and direction is straight to the point, cohesive, and comes across as totally fulfilling in its 164 minute run-time.

4K UHD Review: ‘The Dark Knight’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 2nd, 2018

THE FILM

The Dark Knight‘ is one of those rare instances where the sequel is even better that it’s previous original movie. I would say that this film is perhaps one of the greatest, if not the greatest superhero film of all time so far. In addition to that, it’s just a fantastic film itself that can compete with any movie out there. This sequel picks up with Batman in the prime of his justice restoring and bringing criminals to jail. Christian Bale is better than ever here as Batman and we see how him being the caped crusader is taking a toll both physically and mentally on him. He still manages to come through though each time. But soon enough, comes The Joker, played flawlessly by Heath Ledger.

Hi, Bryan Here….

the-dark-knight-trilogy-600x600

Christopher Nolan’s reimagining of the Batman franchise beginning with 2005’s Batman Begins enjoyed phenomenal critical and box-office success. Now on September 24, Nolan’s three Batman films Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight Rises – will be released by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment as The Dark Knight Trilogy: Ultimate Collector’s Edition. The six-disc set will feature all three films with their existing extra content, two new featurettes and exclusive new collectible memorabilia. This must-own collection for fans of DC Comics’ Caped Crusader is available in premium packaging and will sell for around $100.00. I’m willing to bet it’s cheaper than that though at certain retail stores. ***ARTWORK IS NOT FINAL***

Blu-Ray Review: ‘The Dark Knight Rises’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 16th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here…..

91t42AGU92L._AA1500_

Christopher Nolan’s third and final installment of his Batman franchise ranks as the best film in the series.  That’s difficult for me to say, as the first two films were so amazing.  Even with Heath Ledger’s iconic and eternal role as the Joker in the previous film, ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ far surpasses anything my imagination could have hoped for in film.  Movies do not get better than ’The Dark Knight Rises’.

Hi, Bryan Here….

Since most of have seen ‘The Dark Knight Rises’, a lot of us were wondering why there was not one mention of The Joker in the third film.  Christopher Nolan definitely let it be known that he was not including The Joker in the film.  He didn’t even mention him in a line of dialogue.  I wish there would have been some sort of mention, but sadly there wasn’t.

FedMex Here….

So Christopher Nolan has finally completed his Batman Trilogy, and yes, you’ve heard correctly, it is quite likely one of the best trilogies ever made. It’s up to Star Wars levels of good, and let me tell you why.Christopher Nolan gave us three films, an origin story, a suspenseful thriller, and an EPIC conclusion.  It’s very difficult to write this without going into spoilers, but here’s what I can safely say without giving anything away.

I’m a bonafide Batfan from way back when Wonder Woman and Batgirl were on my knickers. This includes all things batty. Not like regular animal bats, because that would just be weird, or at the very least, awkward. If you call your pad the Batcave and you’re a Batman fan, all is well, if you call it the Batcave because it’s full of real bats, you might need to spend some time in Arkham Asylum. Don’t worry, it’s perfectly safe…er…well usually.

Hi, Bryan Here…..

I really can’t wait to see this.  I’ve been a long time fan of ‘Star Trek’ and f friends asked my that age old question, “Star Wars or Star Trek?”, my answer was 10/10 ‘Star Trek’.  As we previously reported, the first several minutes of ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ will be shown in front of ‘The Hobbit’ film, which my review will be posted shortly.  Anyway, on to the poster.  I really do like this poster, and tons of people are saying it is eerily similar to ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ poster, which I can see, but I think this one is tons better.  I do hope at one point that we get the Enterprise on the poster, but this is a good one.

Blu-ray Review: ‘The Unborn’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 3rd, 2018

There is a fun horror sub-genre about pregnancy and demonic babies. In 1991, a film called ‘The Unborn‘ was added to that list and could be compared somewhat to ‘It’s Alive‘ and ‘Rosemary’s Baby‘. What’s crazy about this movie is the amount of talent involved before they were A-List. This is filmmaker Rodman Flender’s first film who went on to make a ton of horror movies and TV shows such as ‘The Office‘, ‘Arli$$‘, and ‘Leprechaun 2‘. It was produced by Roger Corman, starred a young Lisa Kudrow, with cinematographer Wally Pfister, who went on to lens all of Christopher Nolan’s movies, including the ‘Dark Knight‘ trilogy. It’s crazy, I know.

4H UHD Review: ‘Inception’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 8th, 2018

THE FILM

Every once in a blue-moon, a movie comes out that feels refreshing, original, and entertains us on a certain level that we won’t soon forget. Of of those movies is ‘Inception‘, directed by Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight). As Nolan was making his Dark Knight (Batman) trilogy, he made a movie in between each sequel. One of them was this film and it truly shines out of all the rest. It brings something everyone does for half their life and makes a thrilling and smart film out of it. ‘Inception‘ involves sleeping and dreaming, but with certain technology, you can be in control of your dreams, and even connect to other people’s dreams and plant an idea in their heads that might make them change their way of thinking. That’s the point of ‘Inception’. It’s quite brilliant.

4K UHD Review: ‘Batman Begins’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 2nd, 2018

THE FILM

Since 1989, we were thrilled to have Batman movies. In 1989, we received are first big budget Batman film from newcomer director at the time Tim Burton. It went onto be a box office sensation and spawned three more sequels, which became increasingly worse and silly. By the time the 4th film got around, it was more like watching a slapstick cartoon than anything good or resembling Batman. In fact, the franchise became a joke. Then came along Christopher Nolan who made his trilogy of Batman films, starting with ‘Batman Begins‘, which told a much darker and realistic side of the Dark Knight. The results were astounding on both critical and box office fronts.

4K UHD Review: ‘Dunkirk’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 19th, 2017

THE FILM

There’s never been a war film like ‘Dunkirk‘, which I’d say is a masterpiece in filmmaking, lead by Christopher Nolan (Inception, The Dark Knight Trilogy). Even though Dunkirk cost $150 million to make, you really wouldn’t know it, as it’s simplistic, yet grand view of the Battle and Evacuation of Dunkirk in 1940 is perfectly captured here. Dunkirk is why we still go to the movies. It’s one of the most intense movies I’ve ever seen and is one of the reasons to get out and see it in IMAX. Other war films try add sweeping music to add an emotional effect or certain camera angles to drum up more dramatic suspense.

Scooby Doo and Batman are coming to Blu-ray Together!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 7th, 2017

I’m gonna go ahead and say it. There won’t be a better film than this all year. On January 9th, 2018, Warner Bros. is releasing ‘Scooby-Doo & Batman: The Brave and the Bold‘ on Digital Streaming. How can Warner Bros. team up this duo? Well, the villains of the Batman universe have partnered up with the villains of the Scooby Doo universe to terrorize the city. Batman then decides to join the other detective agency of Mystery Inc with Scooby, Shaggy, Fred, Daphne, and Velma to fight crime. There are so many scenarios I want to see played out here. I want to see Batman slap Fred. I want to see Velma and Daphne fight over Batman. I want to see Shaggy try to unmask Batman. I want to see Scooby wear a Bat-Dog costume. I want the Joker and Ghost Clown to torture civilians. I don’t think this is asking for too much.

Film Review #2: ‘Logan’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 3rd, 2017

Dan M., here….

thumbnail_25047

Even when the dust settles and recency bias fades, I can’t imagine LOGAN not being considered one of the greatest superhero films of all time. For me, LOGAN is in the same class as Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Spider-Man 1-2, Iron Man, Reeve’s Superman, Burton’s Batman, etc. I believe all of those comic films work as films and stories first, comic fun second. There are plenty of “fun” comic movies I thoroughly enjoy and love but I wouldn’t classify them as well-crafted films. LOGAN is a great story and character arc first and comic fun second. It just works on every level.

Yes, we are all a bit nervous when it comes to video game movies. There is good reason for that too, since most of them are fairly terrible, even though some make a ton of money at the box office. The ‘Tomb Raider‘ films with Angelina Jolie made a ton of money as did the many sequels of ‘Resident Evil‘. Let’s not forget the recent ‘Warcraft‘ movie or ‘The Angry Birds‘ movie either – all of which made a big box office splash, despite the quality of story and performances.

Film Review: ‘TMNT2: Out of the Shadows’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 1st, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

maxresdefault

Coming off the last outing with these four lovable and iconic green characters, I wasn’t so sure about how much I was going to enjoy this sequel, ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows‘ or TMNT2 for short. The last film, which was a remake had a shoddy director and filmmaker Michael Bay at the helm. Needless to say, it was all about explosions and a sexy woman walking around with almost no attention to the turtles themselves. There were about ten whole seconds of the last film that I actually enjoyed, which was the fun scene in the elevator where we saw Michelangelo, Donatello, Raphael, and Leonardo beatboxing like kids, and when the doors opened, they put their ninja faces on to fight Shredder. That scene really showed what these new Turtles could actually be. So I hoped I would at least get twenty seconds this time around.

The film is coming to theaters on December 21, 2016, still more than a year away, but close enough to release a small glimpse of what’s in store for us.

Film Review: ‘The Wolfpack’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Apr 14th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

holding-wolfpack-sundance-film-festival

I wasn’t quite sure of what to expect from ‘The Wolfpack‘. I went in only know a thing or two about this documentary, but what I got was so much more. Some of us turn to reading as a form of escapism and happiness where others might turn to religion, or nature. For me, it was always music and movies. After a hard day of work or school, I knew I could always come home and listen to a good record or watch a film and be totally content. It’s almost like being at home whenever I watch a movie or listen to music, no matter where I am.

Film Review: ‘Black Sea’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 21st, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

4075_D022_00093_R.jpg

Jude Law in a submarine movie, you say? Why yes please. I had only hoped that we would get Jude Law playing ‘Dom Hemingway‘ again here, talking about his private parts in such a way that it seems poetic, but unfortunately that’s not the case with his character or this film, titled ‘Black Sea‘. Director Kevin Macdonald has an impressive resume for sure, with films like ‘Marley‘ and ‘The Last King of Scotland‘ under his belt. Where those award winning films might have shown us something more on a serious level whether it be about a historical figure or brilliant musician, ‘Black Sea‘ tends to journey into the ludicrous realm on am adult ‘Hardy Boys‘ type of quest.

Film Review: ‘Interstellar’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 4th, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

interstellar-11

It’s obvious with ‘Interstellar‘ that Stanley Kubrick’s2001: A Space Odyssey‘ is Christopher Nolan’s favorite film, which is no secret if you’ve seen interviews with the ‘Dark Knight‘ director. Armed with a core plot that all life on Earth will one day soon need to find a new planet to live on to survive, ‘Interstellar‘ dares to define a new meaning to the term science-fiction. This visually stunning movie is a gift to watch on the big screen, particularly in IMAX, and tries so hard to deliver on both the science fiction aspects of space as well as our complex human emotions. With a film that has so much going for it in it’s near three-hour run time, and so many big set pieces and theories, there are things that are bound to stick the landing, and other things that are destined to fall flat.

Hey guys, Jana here,

2235697-suicide_squad_001_01

When it comes to Marvel comic-to-movie VS. DC comic-to-movie transformations, Marvel has a clear leading edge with interlaced storylines and sheer numbers that have been released. It pains me to type that because I am a DC fan. HUGE fan of DC characters, the heroes and their amazing villains. To me, the villains are absolute top notch and beat out anything Marvel can throw out. The colors, the histories, the wicked laughs and plots are perfectly my brand of crazy. Among these vivid characters that leap off the pages are Two-Face, Lex Luthor, Harley Quinn and of course, The Joker.

Hey fanboys and girls, Jana here,

GOTHAM_CAROUSEL_DESKTOP_1400x386-carousel-1400x386

Everyone remember the hype surrounding the new prequel series ‘Gotham‘? We’ve been inundated with teasers, internet ads, and just in general talking about how awesome, or un-awesome (is that a word?) it’s going to be. I want to be hopeful, because I’m a huge fan of the bat. Love the world of Gotham City and it’s dark, iniquitous, sullen tones. I’ve always loved the Tim Burton version of the Batman films, don’t get me wrong, Nolan’s flicks were excellent in that they gave me the action I crave. But I like how the first set of movies make him a real character and not either just a 40-pack a day smoker in a cowl, or an asshole.

Film Review: ‘A Trip To Italy’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 29th, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

maxresdefault

I’ve always wanted to take a trip to Italy. I’ve dreamed of seeing where my family came from, quenching my thirst on some fine Italian wine, hiking up the hills and looking out at the ocean, gaining thirty pounds on some of the best food I know I will eat, and of course, re-enact scenes from ‘The Godfather II‘ to pay homage to my family who came from Sicily. I figure by sailing on the open ocean to a good restaurant or spending the day at a wine vineyard, I might just end up moving and living there. And Michael Winterbottom’sThe Trip to Italy‘ made me want to fast track this goal.

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

batman25th

Since we are all still celebrating the 75th anniversary of our favorite hero ‘Batman‘, Warner Bros. has just announced that they will be releasing a special edition of 1989 ‘Batman‘ film that starred Michael Keaton as Batman and Jack Nicholson as The Joker. It will be called ‘Batman 25th Anniversary Two-Disc Edition, and will be on Blu-ray starting November 11th (2 days after my birthday – hint, hint). The new packaging is pretty cool as well and will fit nicely in for those of you who add this to your collection. But the big news is that this set also includes a new film called ‘Batman: The Birth of the Modern Blockbuster‘, which is a look at how the marketing and merchandising for this film set the stage for the rest of the superhero films to present day.

Film Review: ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 7th, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

TMNT-2014-Desktop-Wallpaper-HD1

It has been 21 years since we’ve had a ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles‘ live action movie in theaters. In 2007, there was a CG animated ‘TMNT‘ film, which was actually quite good. And of course there have been the comic and two different animated series. And now we have a complete reboot of the entire franchise in live action form from Jonathan Libesman (the guy who directed ‘Wrath of the Titans‘ and ‘Battle Los Angeles‘). You can add to that so-called talent the worst filmmaker to ever come out of Hollywood, Michael Bay (‘Armageddon‘) as a hands on producer. The sad thing about this reboot is that it has tons of potential to be a great film. A really great film. But everything went wrong everywhere with the movie, and poor decisions were made, and now we have a steaming pile of shit for a film that could have run with the best of the Marvel Comic book films.

The Top 10 Perfectly Cast Movie Roles!!

Top Ten Perfectly Cast Roles

The Bard of Avon said it best, “Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.” Some actors are great, and shine in everything they do (Leonardo DiCaprio, Gary Oldman, Daniel Day-Lewis). Some actors are smart enough to pick roles that best use their limited skill sets (Keanu Reeves). This list takes a look at the perfect pairing of actor and role. In this list, you will find a pairing of actor and role so great that the actor ceases to be themselves and instead makes the character take on a life of its own. These pairings are so uniquely theirs that you can’t imagine anyone else taking their place should Hollywood have the audacity to try.

If you haven’t seen the original film ‘Black Dynamite‘, you should highly consider taking a few hours from your weekend and watching it. It’s highly entertaining. From the big cult success of that film, Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim picked up the storyline in the form of an animated series. Needless to say, the series was just as good as the film. Hell, the first episode had Black Dynamite fighting an evil version of The Jackson Five. The series will be available July 15, on Blu-ray and DVD and will Include the 10 First Season Episodes Plus  a Behind-The-Scenes Featurette, and an Original Pilot and Video Commentaries.

Sony to Reboot ‘Zorro’!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Mar 10th, 2014

Hello Jana here,

Zorro

The last swashbuckler to hit the big screen was Captain Jack Sparrow in the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean‘ films, but before him, there was another. Back in 1922 the tales of Zorro gripped the world with his master swordsmanship  and championing the defenseless. Since then Hollywood has made some bank off of the masked man at least a dozen times and with varying success. I’m pleased to announce there is going to be a reboot of the Zorro films. Not so much a reboot of original stories, as a new movie based on a new book about Zorro. If that made sense, I might have a future in writing!

Comic book fans, Dark Knight collectors, and DC fans everywhere can now speculate on how the young Bruce Wayne is going to pan out now that he and Selena Kyle have been cast for the Batman prequel series ‘Gotham‘ for Fox. Camren Bicondova, a newcomer to the film industry, is set to play the role of the highly skilled sticky-pawed Catwoman, a.k.a. Selena Kyle.

Film Review: ‘That Awkward Moment’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 30th, 2014

Hi, Bryan Here…

9d0fd19d-3d90-4482-b3e8-3a472c4d4da5_thatawkwardmoment

I really wanted to like ‘That Awkward Moment‘, but I never found myself enjoying the film, other than the sporadic chuckles that came once every twenty minutes. And even then, it wasn’t a gut-busting laugh. One of the producers of ‘Movie 43‘, Tom Gormican, wrote and directed this movie. Let it also be known that this is also his only movie credit other than ‘Movie 43‘, which is obvious after you watch ‘That Awkward Moment‘. This twenty-something romantic comedy tries to hard to be a Judd Apatow film, but lacks just about everything good from an Apatow movie. It’s a clumsy flick that is cliched at every corner with poor editing, a terrible script, and some mis-cast actors. I’m sure this raunchy rom-com will make a decent amount of money, but will be instantly forgotten.

Film Review: ‘Out of The Furnace’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 5th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here…

out-of-the-furnace-harrelson-bale-0782013-101738

Scott Cooper’s second film ‘Out of The Furnace‘ has a lot going for it. The script and especially its amazing A-List cast might draw out a decent crowd, but a sour taste might be left in your mouth after the end credits start to roll. Cooper’s first film was ‘Crazy Heart‘ and had some similar somber tones to it as this film does, but it’s nowhere near how brutal ‘Out of the Furnace‘ truly is. But what makes this blue-collar flick ultimately suffer is the amount of filler that has nothing to do with actual premise of the movie and keep the film from moving forward at a steady pace.

The 1979 hit that made Mel Gibson a superstar is being re-launched….as is everything that was once great, good or even mediocre. George Miller is back to direct the franchise that made his name 35 years ago with Mad Max: Fury Road. Mel Gibson will be back, as well, but not in the lead role. That torch has been passed on to Tom Hardy (Warrior, Lawless, The Dark Knight Rises). Joining Hardy are co-stars Charlize Theron (Monster, Aeon Flux and Snow White and the Huntsman)and Nicholas Hoult (Warm Bodiess, Jack the Giant Slayer and X-Men: First Class). This makes the first Mad Max movie since 1985’s Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome.

The Weinstein Company has purchased the big screen adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth from Studiocanal. The heart-breakingly gorgeous Michael Fassbender, younger Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto from X-Men: First Class and the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past is cast as the titular Macbeth. Marion Cotillard has signed on to play Lady Macbeth. Cotillard is fairly well known for playing Billie Frechette opposite Johnny Depp’s Dillinger in Public Enemies. She also recently, and most notably, played Talia al Ghul in The Dark Knight Rises. I first realized her star power when I saw her Ridley Scott’s A Good Year playing opposite Russell Crowe.

Film Review: ‘Now You See Me’!!

Hi, Bryan Here….

With a mix of ‘The Illusionist‘ and ‘The Prestige‘, and a healthy dose of ‘Ocean’s 11‘, director Louis Leterrier gives us ‘Now You See Me‘, which is a heist movie involving four magicians. The illusions in the film are over-the-top, but incredible and despite the movie’s flaws, its super fast pace makes its problems disappear from memory. With an all-star cast and decent dialogue, this magical caper might be one of the summer’s biggest surprises.

Bryan’s Top 20 Films of 2012!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 31st, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

I can’t believe that 2012 is at its end and we are about to welcome 2013.  This year has gone by so fast, and man, did I see tons of films.  When I started making this 2012 list, I came up with 87 films that I enjoyed.  Yes, you read that right, 87, meaning there were probably just as many films that I didn’t enjoy.  Now, below is my top 20 of the year. I just couldn’t do it with 10 this year.  And these are films that I watched in the theater or at home and that don’t necessarily come out this year, but I did see this year.  And I’m sure I’ll get a lot of criticism for my list, but hey this is my list, not yours.  You can have your own.  But my lists tend to be different than most people’s as you can tell from my previous lists HERE. So without any further delay, below is my TOP 20 films for 2012.

‘Man of Steel’ Will be 3D!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 7th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

The upcoming Superman film, ‘Man of Steel’ has jest been given the go ahead to be released in 3D.  Smart movie, since 3D ticket prices are significantly higher than normal movie ticket prices.  And with these big epic superhero films, they all want to milk every last penny .  Since Avengers (was in 3D) made over $1 billion and Dark Knight Rises (not in 3D) did not so easily, I think all studios want the extra cash.  Like I said, it’s smart, but not necessarily a great move.  Out of the 100 or so films I have seen in 3D, only two or three of them really made a difference being in 3D.  I doubt this one will as well.  However, if you are a fan of the format, then this should excite you.

Criterion Collection Titles For December 2012!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 17th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

The good folks over at Criterion have just announced their titles for December, 2012.  There are some really cool titles for December.  One  title I have waited for years to own on criterion.  Another title is actually Christopher Nolan’s first film, ‘Following’, which is very exciting.  If this is any indication, we might get future Nolan films on Criterion sooner than later, which means a possible Dark Knight Criterion. After all, with Criterion, most director’s who get a film in at Criterion, tend to get more of their films in that pot.   So here’s hoping.  Sadly, no announcement of ‘Good Burger’ or any of the Ernest movies yet, but hopefully in the year 2013, we will get at least one of those.  I can’t wait until December now.  Thanks, Criterion.  Thanks.
