Bryan Reviews ‘Annie Hall’ Bluray!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 28th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

‘Annie Hall’ is finally on blu-ray and that is good news folks.  But at least for me, it’s bittersweet good news.  Sadly, like most or all Woody Allen dvd’s or blu-rays, this does not have any extras besides the trailer.  Wouldn’t it be amazing if there was a commentary by Allen on ‘Annie Hall’?  But, with that said, this is the best the film has looked and should be in everyone’s collection.  ‘Annie Hall’ is a comedic masterpiece of love, loss, and wit.  One of the best films of all time.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Manhattan Murder Mystery’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 6th, 2018

THE FILM

What if I were to tell you that Woody Allen basically made his own version of Alfred Hitchcock’sRear Window‘ that starred himself and Diane Keaton? You’d be excited, right? Well, it happened in 1993 and is kind of light a 1st cousin to ‘Annie Hall‘ as Allen and Keaton play a couple in their mid-life who thing their neighbor killed someone. The film is called ‘Manhattan Murder Mystery‘, and is a comedic film that served to alleviate the pain of Allen’s divorce from Mia Farrow.

Favorite Movie Scene of the Day #3!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 22nd, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

Annie Hall + Diane Keaton + khakis

I love Woody Allen movies and I imagine there will be quite a number of scenes in this column from his films. The first one comes from Annie Hall though. This scene just speaks to me so much and I think it’s a perfect capture of two people who were once in love, but still want to be in each other’s lives, even if it can be a bit awkward. Finding something to talk about to pass the uncomfortable time, or seeing new things in your former significant other’s place that make you question what new things they’re into now that you’re gone is delightfully funny to watch.

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

Screen Shot 2016-08-01 at 5.29.53 PM

I had the pleasure to watch the new film called ‘Some Freaks‘, which was showing at the recent Fantasia Festival in Montreal. This movie stars Thomas Mann (Me, Earl, and the Dying Girl) and Lily Mae Harrington and is directed by Ian MacAllister McDonald, and I must say it is the modern day ‘Annie Hall’! I got the opportunity to talk with Lily Mae and Ian over the phone and we had some great conversations.

Film Review: ‘Cafe Society’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 21st, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

rs-247750-RS-Cafe-Society

Even at the age of 80, the iconic and prolific filmmaker Woody Allen has not lost his wit, charm, or ability to churn out film after film every year. With a little bit of ‘Annie Hall‘ and ‘Manhattan‘ mixed in the frying pan, Allen brings this 1930’s Hollywood story come to life, titled ‘Cafe Society‘. It’s been a while since Allen has made Los Angeles the backdrop for one of his films, and this sweet, funny, romantic film really hits all of those famous Woody Allen notes that we’ve come to expect over the years. It might not be the most original story, but when Woody Allen does these neurotic love stories, the characters, dialogue, and plot all come together in a cohesive and very funny manner. It’s what Allen does best, and he is back in full form with ‘Cafe Society‘.

Good news, everyone. One of the most prolific directors to ever live, Woody Allen will for the first time write and direct a TV series, exclusively for Amazon. Q & A with Ricky Gervais!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Apr 4th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

Over the past hour, Ricky Gervais did a Q& A on HBO and we managed to get several questions in for the comedic genius to answer.  Ricky has a lot of projects coming up with some that are currently on HBO.  I had no idea Gervais wanted to get whacked on ‘The Sopranos’.  Catch his show ‘Life’s Too Short’ on HBO.   That’s genius.  Below is the full interview.  Enjoy.

Bryan Reviews Woody Allen’s ‘Manhattan’ Bluray!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 28th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

Woody Allen’s ‘Manhattan’ is one hell of a fine movie, no matter what Woody Allen says.  The video and audio make this the best the film has ever looked since the theatres. This film has some of the most iconic shots in any Woody Allen film and for that fact , any film made.  The whole film is just one beautiful shot after another.  Frame worthy.  While there are no extras besides a theatrical trailer, this is still one bluray worthy of owning.

Bryan Learns ‘The Art Of Getting By’!!! (A Review)

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 23rd, 2011

Hi Bryan Here….

I really enjoyed this little gem of a film.  This is the film Woody Allen would have made in his teen years.  ‘The Art Of Getting By’ is a coming of age movie at heart, but it has more soul and likability than most other films than it will compare to.  This is in part by its actors and director.  The director is Gavin Wiesen which this film is his first feature film and if this is to show us what he is capable of, then we can expect great things from this guy in the future.  Put him on your radar.  The film stars Freddie Highmore who is a teenager now.  He has grown up from the kid actor from ‘Finding Neverland’ and Tim Burton’s ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’.  He plays a classic Woody Allen character who is a witty and likable smart ass and is in a constant state of mind of “what’s the point?  we are all going to die.  why do anything?”  Classic Woody Allen.

Top 10 List of Reboots We Don’t Want To See!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 8th, 2014

Paul N., Here…

Terminator-5-TV-Series

Like Bill Murray once said, “he’s got to be stopped. And I have to stop him.” You might have thought he was talking about a weather-predicting rodent, but no, he was actually talking about studio executives (the “he” is collective). Hollywood, like any business, is in it to make money. Therefore, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that they choose to rehash tried and true film formulas over and over again rather than take a chance on something new. While this is understandable (albeit infuriating), it doesn’t excuse the idea that EVERYTHING deserves to be re-made. Some films, like priceless art, should never be re-made and re-sold. Every time a classic film gets re-made, audiences hold their collective breaths and hope that it won’t be a straight shot in “the feels” (that nostalgic part of your brain that remembers, with fondness, all your pop culture favorites).

Michael “explosion” Bay is releasing his latest bastardization of 80’s culture unto the world in the shape of the beloved “heroes in a half shell”. In case you haven’t been following, this has been one cluster mess after another. From alien origins to white-washed villains, this movie begs the questions: “does Michael Bay hate the 80’s? Did he have some traumatically horrific experience with toys when he was a kid? Why does he have to take a giant dump on our collective fond memories time after time?”  Read the rest of this entry »

I had some help writing this article with writer, Lisa S.   Lisa hails from netherworld of the Northwest and is not above watching zombie movies for 24 hours straight.  She loves all kinds of scary movies and is an avid music fan.  You might even find her perusing the used DVD bin at your local movie store looking for old Ernest movies and Sifl and Olly discs.  Lisa helped quite a bit with this article and you can expect her read many more of her articles on this site from this point forward.  Give her a warm welcome and visit her online book and record store HERE.

Now let’s get to the list.  Here are Boomstick’s Top 20 Female Badasses in film and television.  I tried to keep it in the horror/sci-fi genre, but a couple of action star made it in there.  These females are the most hardcore we feel, by how much ass they kick, their courage, and their sex appeal.  We dare you to find better role models and badasses than this.  Enjoy the list.

‘Treme’ Returns for 3rd Season Sept. 23!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 22nd, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

First, the people came back. Then, the crime. Now, more than two years after the near death of a great city, the money is starting to arrive, which would sound like a solution if this were some place other than New Orleans, and this was some other era but America at the millennium. For the people of New Orleans, even the promises of redevelopment come with strings attached, and every dollar that shows up – whether from government disaster relief, or from venture capital, or even from those seeking to remake New Orleans in the wake of Katrina – carries with it new dynamics and new risks. National interest has waned, moving on to the next headline, but those who know and love the Crescent City have no choice. They must find their way back to what matters in the life of their city. However, little of what they can bring to bear yields a quick result, and nothing about New Orleans – its government, its police department and courtrooms, its school system – works as it should. Nothing is easy.  In the end, their only weapons are community. And culture.

Hi Bryan Here…..

The 84th annual Academy Award nominations are in.  There are a couple of surprises that I was very happy to see on here and tons of disappointment.  It looks like the Academy went with 9 Best Picture noms this year rather than 10.  They also only went with 3 noms for make up which I can think of others, and only two for original song.  Was this a time issue, so that the event would be over on time for once rather than have all 5 songs being sung?  I don’t like it, but that’s how it is this year.  Below you will see each category with my thoughts.  Enjoy.
