Film Review #2: ‘Deadpool 2’!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 15th, 2018

Deadpool 2 checks all the boxes of  the very entertaining first film to the point you wonder if the script was some sort of mad lib experiment. Don’t get me wrong, letting Ryan Reynolds go full Ryan Reynolds in an R Rated superhero movie is a 90 minute blast just like it was the first time around but that’s kind of the problem… Deadpool 2 brought nothing new to the table. The Deadpool movie formula works to an extent because Reynolds is so damn fun and the first time you hear the jokes and references they land almost every time. Every criticism of the film can be 100% true but also not matter one bit with this franchise because Ryan Reynolds‘ charm is turned up so damn high that you gloss over the abundant flaws because there was a joke that you actually choked on a drink from.

Film Review #2: ‘Logan’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 3rd, 2017

Dan M., here….

thumbnail_25047

Even when the dust settles and recency bias fades, I can’t imagine LOGAN not being considered one of the greatest superhero films of all time. For me, LOGAN is in the same class as Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Spider-Man 1-2, Iron Man, Reeve’s Superman, Burton’s Batman, etc. I believe all of those comic films work as films and stories first, comic fun second. There are plenty of “fun” comic movies I thoroughly enjoy and love but I wouldn’t classify them as well-crafted films. LOGAN is a great story and character arc first and comic fun second. It just works on every level.

FX Networks has more Marvel and X-Men news, this time it’s an 8-episode order to ‘Legion‘ starring Dan Stevens. Stevens is one of the most heart-stopping reasons to love ‘Downton Abbey‘ and he’s playing the titular male role in Disney’s upcoming ‘Beauty and the Beast‘. ‘Legion‘ is the first cable hosted series for Marvel, ABC hosts ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘ and Netflix is home to four other comic-book shows.

Film Review: ‘X-MEN: APOCALYPSE’!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 9th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

cdn.indiewire.psdops

And we are back with yet another ‘X-MEN‘ movie, marking this the 9th film in the franchise, that is if you count the ‘Wolverine’ movies and what not. If you’re just counting purely ‘X-MEN‘ films, than this is number six with it being number 4 from director Bryan Singer, who started this whole comic book movie crazy back sixteen years ago with the first ‘X-Men‘ film. From there, we have seen the Marvel and DC Universe take off into a multi-billion dollar industry. It’s quite mind boggling, and this new film ‘X-Men: Apocalypse‘ seems to take everything we’ve seen since Matthew Vaughn’s ‘First Class’ and sculpt it into this one film.

Film Review: ‘Ride Along 2’!!

by Janet White on Jan 16th, 2016

Hello Everyone, Janet W. here…

Ride Along 2 - Bros

Following on the tails of the Ride Along, Ride Along 2 comes rollin’ in.  Ben Barber (Kevin Hart) is finally a cop, straight out of the academy, and still seeking James Payton’s (Ice Cube) respect.  Especially, since Ben is about to marry James’ sister, Angela.  The buddy comedy continues, but lacks luster.  Kevin Hart has his usual diarrhea mouth, but in this film, someone added 20 lbs. of ex-lax to his condition.  Normally 8 out of 10 times, this endless train of ramblings can make your side split.  However, in Ride Along 2 his batting average drops.

‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ Rogue Cut Details!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jan 4th, 2015

Hey guys, Jana here,

Just when I think there is not an original hook left in the entertainment world, I read something that really drives home the point of why I am not a marketing genius. Case in point – ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past Rogue Cut‘. In a million years, I would never have possessed the cleverness and ingenuity required to come up with this. I would, however, still have come up with my rock-solid theory connecting Led Zeppelin to the Broadway smash ‘Les Miserables‘.

This is not a review; this is a plea.

Film Review: ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 22nd, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

x_men_days_of_future_past_banner-wide

The big blockbuster movies for the summer of 2014 have officially kicked off and ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past‘ might be the best one yet. For the past year, I’ve been looking forward to seeing this and original X-Men director Bryan Singer returning to this storyline. If you remember, back in 2000, Singer was the first director to take on a big budget comic book movie with the first ‘X-Men‘ film, and the studios were waiting to see if it was going to do enough business. Made on what seems to be a modest budget of only $75 million, the first X-Men film made $300 million domestically, and that’s before 3D and all of the IMAX screens. Well, the rest is history, as we have had tons of comic book films come out since then. But it feels great to be back with the one that started it all.

George Miller is back to direct the franchise that made his name 35 years ago with Mad Max: Fury Road. Mel Gibson will be back, as well, but not in the lead role. That torch has been passed on to Tom Hardy (Warrior, Lawless, The Dark Knight Rises). Joining Hardy are co-stars Charlize Theron (Monster, Aeon Flux and Snow White and the Huntsman)and Nicholas Hoult (Warm Bodiess, Jack the Giant Slayer and X-Men: First Class). This makes the first Mad Max movie since 1985’s Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome.

Bluray/DVD Releases For the 2nd Week of October

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 12th, 2010

A few good releases this week.  Some titles I have been waiting quite a while for to be released.  Any week is good when you get a Wes Anderson Criterion movie.  So, as usual, the picture links will whisk you away over to amazon, where you can learn more about each title, and purchase the movie for a great discount, which also donates a small percent to this column to keep this website going.  Here we go….

The Darjeeling Limited (Criterion Collection Bluray)

I love this Wes Anderson film.  A story about three brothers who are on an emotional and physical journey to come to terms with their lives, and their father’s death, and the disappearance of their mother.  The whole entire film pretty much takes place in India which is BEAUTIFUL.  The soundtrack is littered with Kinks songs which makes it a pleasure to listen to.  Since being a Criterion Collection release, it is packed with extras which include:

New high-definition digital transfer approved by director Wes Anderson

Anderson’s short film Hotel Chevalier (part one of The Darjeeling Limited)

Audio commentary featuring Anderson and cowriters

Behind-the-scenes documentary by Barry Braverman

Anderson and filmmaker James Ivory discussing the film’s music

Anderson’s American Express commercial

On-set footage shot by Coppola and actor Waris Ahluwalia

Audition footage, deleted and alternate scenes, and stills galleries

Original theatrical trailer

PLUS: A booklet featuring an essay by critic Richard Brody

Dollhouse: Season 2 (Bluray)

As an “Active,” the mysterious Echo (Dushku) serves as an unwitting agent of Dollhouse, and illegal underground organization that provides its elite clientele with programmable human beings. Actives receive personality imprints, allowing them to temporarily become anyone or anything — the perfect burglar, lover, spy, or assassin. Now, with the FBI and her own shadowy past closing in, Echo must face a rogue Active who will stop at nothing to bring Dollhouse down — forever.

Extras include:

  • Audio commentary on “Vows”, by show creator Joss Whedon
  • Audio commentary on “Belonging”, by writers Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen
  • Defining Moments
  • Looking Back
  • Outtakes
  • Deleted scenes

Exclusive HD Content

  • Audio commentary on “Getting Closer”, executive producer and episode writer Tim Minear

Ladies and Gentlemen: The Rolling Stones (Bluray)

Film of The Rolling Stones’ 1972 United States tour.

Tracks:

1. Brown Sugar
2. Bitch
3. Gimme Shelter
4. Dead Flowers
5. Happy
6. Tumbling Dice

10. All Down the Line
11. Midnight Rambler
12. Bye Bye Johnny
13. Rip This Joint
14. Jumpin’ Jack Flash
15. Street Fighting Man

Extras include:

Supplements

  • Tour rehearsal footage from Montreux
  • 1972 Old Grey Whistle Test interview with Mick Jagger
  • 2010 interview with Mick Jagger

The Magician (Criterion Collection Bluray)

Ingmar Bergman’s The Magician (Ansiktet) is an engaging, brilliantly conceived tale of deceit from one of cinema’s premier illusionists. Max von Sydow stars as Dr. Vogler, a mid-nineteenth-century traveling mesmerist and peddler of potions whose magic is put to the test by a small town’s cruel, eminently rational minister of health, Dr. Vergerus. The result is a diabolically clever battle of wits that’s both frightening and funny, shot in rich, gorgeously gothic black and white.

Extras include:

Supplements

  • New visual essay by Bergman scholar Peter Cowie
  • Brief 1967 video interview with director Ingmar Bergman about the film
  • Rare English-language audio interview with Bergman, conducted by filmmakers Olivier Assayas and Stig Björkman
  • A booklet featuring an essay by critic Geoff Andrew, a reprinted essay by Assayas, and an excerpt from Bergman’s autobiography Images: My Life in Film

Wolverine and the X-Men: Complete Series (Bluray)

This show was badass.  Glad it is finally on bluray.  After a mysterious explosion at the Xavier mansion, and the resulting disappearances of Professor Xavier and Jean Grey, the distraught X-Men disband. But soon Wolverine, Storm, Beast and the others must join together again to not only battle the increasingly powerful Mutant Response Division, but also to prevent a catastrophic future that Xavier has warned Wolverine must never come to pass. With help from their allies, the heroic X-Men wage war against formidable foes as the present and future collide. But who will win? Discover for yourself as this extraordinary series is presented together in one complete collection like never before.

Supplements

  • Audio commentaries
  • Two unique featurettes

Leaves of Grass (Bluray)

I do not know much about this film, but I cannot believe this film did not get a major release.  It stars Edward Norton, Richard Dreyfuss, Tim Blake Nelson, Susan Sarandon, and Keri Russell.  An Ivy League professor is lured back to his Oklahoma hometown, where his twin brother, a small-time pot grower, has concocted a scheme to take down a local drug lord.  Sounds awesome.  I’ll be picking this up.

Well that’s it for this week.  Stay tuned for next week for new releases.

Scream Factory is releasing ‘Manhunter‘ in Collector’s Edition form on May 24th on Blu-ray with a ton of new extras. Do you remember ‘Manhunter’ from 1986? It had a hell of a cast and featured the character Hannibal Lektor for the first time on screen. Yes, even before he rose to superstardom in ‘Silence of the Lambs‘. This film also had a killer soundtrack as well. Below is the press release and all the info you will need on the release. Can’t wait for May 24th.

Hey guys, Jana here,

Wolves_Poster_3 Large

We’ve got a new trailer for you today! ‘Wolves‘ from writer director David Hayter is coming to VOD on October 16 and to select theaters nationwide beginning November 14. Hayter has acted in many films in bit parts, but his true talent was for screenwriting. Good news, everyone. The U.S. will be getting the seemingly cool werewolf movie, starring Jason Momoa, Lucas Till, and Stephen McHattie. It’s been quite a long time since we’ve received an awesome werewolf movie. This particular one is called ‘Wolves‘ and is directed by David Hayter. This is Hayter’s first feature film to direct, as he is normally a writer. Hayter wrote the screenplays for ‘X-Men‘, ‘X-Men 2‘, ‘The Scorpion King‘, and ‘Watchmen‘. I’m curious to see how this turns out. I’m a sucker for Werewolf movies. Below is the press release.

Hello Everyone, Janet W. here…

Film Review: ‘Tragedy Girls’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 24th, 2017

“Tragedy Girls fits best on a weeknight in October when you’ve already watched the good horror movies leading up to Halloween.”

Tragedy Girls is a movie that you probably don’t know about, haven’t seen ads for, and will have a tough time finding but if it comes on Netflix or Amazon Prime and you need to kill 90 minutes? You could do much worse. The film is a solid attempt at satire of high school, social media, and horror movies. It also contains some legitimately dark humor that really shocked me at first because I knew nothing about the film going in. I need to set the plot a bit in order to discuss the movie further.

Film Review: ‘Rebel in the Rye’!!

by Janet White on Oct 14th, 2017

Hello Everyone, Janet W. here…

The Catcher in the Rye took the U.S. by storm nearly from its initial printing. The author, J.D. Salinger, transformed from obscurity to magnified limelight causing him to retract from the world. The more the public wanted to know him or be his infamous character, Holden Caulfield, the more withdrawn Salinger became which increased the mystery. In the past 66 years, the novel has been printed, re-printed, translated and massively distributed throughout the world. Schools have both required and banned the reading for reasons of profanity and its message. Rebel in the Rye details Salinger’s (Nicholas Hoult) life and progression as a writer. From his early years as a willful, smart mouth to an obsessed literary giant. Read the rest of this entry »

4K UHD Review: ‘Kick-Ass’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 2nd, 2017

THE FILM

Back in 2008, Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. created a new comic book that was kick-ass, that they in fact named it ‘Kick-Ass‘. It was basically Spider-Man if Spider-Man had no superpowers and was had a hardcore R rating. The amount of creative energy, violence, comedy, and character development that went into the comic was magical as it was entertaining and wonderful. Millar just had a way with words and story plot that made this comic book called ‘Kick-Ass‘ solid gold. It was to nobody’s surprise that only two years later, we got a feature film directed by Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake, X-Men: First Class, Kingsman) and produced by Brad Pitt, that ignited a new breed of R rated superhero films.

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

Perhaps the biggest movie of the summer and the one film to get DC and Warner Bros. back on track with their superhero films – WONDER WOMAN, is coming to 4K UHD, Blu-ray, 3D Blu-ray, and DVD. Warner is sure milking this for all its worth, since they are also releasing a 3D version of the film, even though 3D is dead in the water. The 4K UHD is the way to go for sure here if you have the right equipment. You can own the movie digitally as soon as August 29th, and you’ll be able to purchase the Blu-ray, 4K, 3D, and DVD on September 19th. There are tons of bonus features as well, which I can’t wait to watch. Official information below.

Alien: Covenant is Coming to 4K and Blu-ray!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 6th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

Well well well. It’s nowhere near game over man with the Alien franchise or their home video releases. Alien: Covenant is coming to 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD on August 15th with an earlier Digital release on August 1st. In addition to the mass roll out of these releases, there will also be Limited Edition Exclusives available at certain retailers. Luckily, there won’t be any bonus features specific to the different retailers like they’ve annoyingly done in the past. These exclusives are basically package-only differences, which you can read about below. It looks like Dolby Atmos will be the preferred audio format along with a ton of extras included. I can’t wait to watch this again.

The John Wick Comic Book is Almost Here!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 20th, 2017

Hi  everyone, Bryan here….

JohnWick01-Cov-B-Cowan

We already knew that the comic book publisher Dynamite Entertainment had already worked a deal to bring the story of John Wick into the comic book world, but now we have a release date, writers, artists, and even some info on the story. John Wick is one of the best action films of recent memory. It spawned a recent sequel with both films making a ton of money and much critical praise. Not only does John Wick have spectacular stunt work and one hell of a story that follows a former assassin out to kill the people he once worked for, but this mysterious world John Wick is in has been living in is one that we’ve gotten glimpses of in the past two films, leaving us wanting more. This comic book will explore that world in more detail, which means more information on assassins, the hotels, and people who handle their business. I can’t wait.

Warner Bros. Wants to Remake ‘The Matrix’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 14th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

The-Matrix

Warner Bros. is at a loss for original ideas, so they are wanting to get back to 1999 when ‘The Matrix‘ was releasing, because in fact, they want to remake ‘The Matrix‘. This is a terrible idea. There are tons of original stories and ideas out there. Get after it Warner Bros. Sources close to the project have said that a remake of ‘The Matrix‘ is in the works, which isn’t necessarily new news, since we reported on this a couple of years ago. It wasn’t so much of a remake back then, but maybe an expanse on the storyline or even a sequel.

Film Review: ‘LOGAN’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 17th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

Screen Shot 2017-02-17 at 11.10.34 AM

For decades now, we have been clamoring for a ‘Wolverine‘ film done right. From his first incarnation in Hulk #181 to his own miniseries in comic book form in the 1980’s by Frank Miller, to the amazing Saturday Morning Cartoon, and his first appearance in a feature film in 2000 with ‘X-Men‘, which had the song and dance man Hugh Jackman play the iconic character. He was so good at playing Logan/Wolverine, that fans immediately took a liking to him as that character and he went on to play the ‘Snikt-y Snikt’ character in almost a dozen more films. Besides the ‘X-Men‘ films, Wolverine got his own set of standalone films, which may or may not have been liked by a lot of people for various reasons. Either the story was too silly or the character Wolverine was to PG for fans.

Film Review: ‘Monster Trucks’!

Joel H., here…

monster-trucks-movie-cgi-creature

Remember what it was like to dream? I’m not referring to our current dreams of better jobs, or more money, or a new car, but dreaming without restriction? As a kid, I dreamed several times of experiencing that bicycle flight in front of the moon with E.T. at the helm. I dreamed of discovering pirate gold and sneaking a kiss from my older brother’s girl like Mikey. I sat in spaceships and fighter jets made of cardboard boxes. I gave life and personality to a slew of GI Joe’s, even little green army men with no functional limbs. I dreamed. There was no lack of depth to those dreams. No impending Trump administration. No knowledge that the guns used for pretend are replicates of actual war machines taking lives every single day. My simple imagination was rampant without knowing otherwise, but I grew up.

Yes, we are all a bit nervous when it comes to video game movies. There is good reason for that too, since most of them are fairly terrible, even though some make a ton of money at the box office. The ‘Tomb Raider‘ films with Angelina Jolie made a ton of money as did the many sequels of ‘Resident Evil‘. Let’s not forget the recent ‘Warcraft‘ movie or ‘The Angry Birds‘ movie either – all of which made a big box office splash, despite the quality of story and performances.

What is love in the mind of an addict?  What would you do to prove your love under a heroin haze?  Heaven Knows What takes the viewer on a twisted walk through the dark world of addiction on the streets of New York City.  The audience follows Harley (Arielle Holmes), a young woman whose addiction to heroin is almost as powerful as her addiction to her boyfriend, Ilya (Caleb Landry Jones).  Or is it the other way around?  Trying to make sense of a drug-ridden mind’s motivation or intention is a lost cause.  Perhaps this fact led to the film’s title.  Truly, who could understand why an addict would do anything.

Film Review: ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’!

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

To basically start out the summer of 2015 with a big bang, comes the highly anticipated sequel to Marvel’s 2012’s ‘Avengers‘ film, which is titled ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron‘. It’s been a long time coming too. Ever since 2008, when we saw Robert Downey Jr. put on the Iron Man suit for the first time, we all knew Marvel Entertainment had a huge franchise on their hands, as they teased a big film called ‘The Avengers‘, which put a lot of our favorite superheroes together to fight evil. After several solo movies with the likes of Hulk, Thor, Captain America, and Iron Man, we finally got an ‘Avengers‘ movie in 2012, which made over $1 billion for Marvel and Disney, and was met with much praise and critical success. It was because of this, that Marvel has announced tons of superhero films through the year 2019 that will play into their overall story arc they have been building since 2008. We’ve all been anxiously awaiting this sequel for quite some time now, with tons of posters and trailers that have more than elevated our calm levels with excitement. Now the time is finally here for another hefty dose of ‘Avengers‘ with each superhero returning along with Joss Whedon directing.

If you’re like me you’ve been on pins and needles awaiting casting information from one of the latest films covering the canon of the Marvel universe, ‘Deadpool‘. Wise-cracking Wade Wilson aka Deadpool is a fan favorite for his ass-kicking capability and his witty master of the English language. Marvel originally introduced Wilson in ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine‘ in 2009 played perfectly by Ryan Reynolds. In a somewhat strange turn of events, Reynolds confirmed that the current ‘Deadpool’ will have no connection to the character he originated in the Wolverine movie, but will be playing him again, in the new incarnation. This time around Wade Wilson, an assassin who undergoes a procedure to cure his cancer that ends up leaving him twisted and scarred but carrying superpowers. ‘Deadpool‘ is slated to begin filming in March and slated for 2016 release.

Film Review: ‘Wolves’!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Nov 1st, 2014

Hey guys, Jana here,

wolves-poster01

Halloween is in the air, which brings to mind all of the ghosties, goblins and furry beasties. Werewolves have been neutered in mainstream media lately. All you have to do is check out a ‘Twilight’ flick to see the new lows the monsters have come to. That is what they used to be – monsters – they’ve been romanticized the way vampires always have been and it’s changed the way I perceive them and I hate that.

Marvel made an announcement today, actually several announcements, about the third phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We’ve all been hearing rumors about upcoming projects but nothing has been verified until today. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige took the stage to lay out a timeline for their next few films.

In the category of we-all-knew-it-would-happen-eventually Marvel is paving the way for an epic battle between Captain America and Iron Man with ‘Captain America: Civil War‘. Chris Evans and Robert Downey, Jr will reprise their previous roles and Chadwick Boseman will make his first appearance as the Black Panther. Cap’s Civil War hits big screens on May 6, 2016.
