Hey guys, Jana here,

HYOM_Wall_WEBSITE

I knew nothing about this film other than the title but that was enough for me to watch it and I’m beyond happy I gave it a shot. ‘The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out The Window and Disappeared‘ is definitely a mouthful for a title, but it stands out. The film is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Jonas Jonasson and has become the third highest grossing Swedish film of all time with good reason. Directed by Felix Herngren and starring Robert Gustafsson who, in his own right, is a gifted writer, actor and director of Swedish media, he shares the screen with the acting legends Iwar Wiklander, David Wiberg, Mia Skaringer and Jens Hulten.

Hi Bryan Here…

One of the best films in the last 50 years.  Right at the top of that list.  Robert De Niro is fucking brilliant in this movie.  I can’t believe this movie has not been released on bluray yet.  This film is unrelenting, unmerciful, brutal, and all kinds of AWESOME.  A MUST OWN MOVIE.

Dan Moran’s Top 12 Movies of 2017 Plus Extras!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 4th, 2018

I saw 75 movies this year and I still have 3-4 left to finish up over the next few weeks. I haven’t seen The Post, Call Me By Your Name, or Phantom Thread yet. Phantom Thread is the only regret I have but it doesn’t come out until mid-January and I like to finish my list before first week of January ends. A few special awards before my top 12.

Jana’s Best of 2017!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jan 1st, 2018

Hey guys, Jana here,

I know these “Best of 2017” lists should technically be published in 2017, but why would I start 2018 any differently than I lived the majority of my adult life: Procrastinating and underachieving. What can I say? That’s my wheelhouse.

For a year that put a spotlight on some of the shittiest behavior by some of the Hollywood elite, it was actually a good year for TV and movies. I didn’t limit myself in number because as I moved on with the brackets, I felt like I was making ‘Sophie’s Choice‘ on some of these, so they’re all getting in! I’m feeling my inner-Oprah here, You’ve made the list! You made the list! EVERYBODY made the list!! In order to spare myself any arguments, I’m stating up front that my picks for the “Best of 2017” are not edited in regards to scandal or hideous human behavior.

4K UHD Review: ‘Cars 3’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 8th, 2017

THE FILM

This film review portion was written by Jodi York.

I wasn’t sure how well a midlife crisis plot line was going to play with my 10 & 12 year old viewing companions, but they both gave Cars 3 the thumbs up!  Surprisingly, Harrison said that he really enjoyed that this was a ‘comeback story.’

There were a number of new characters introduced in this film.  Jaquelin, who has a need for speed, said she liked the way the new, high tech racers looked; but what we all relished the most was the scenes with the ‘old timer’ racing cars, which Lightning McQueen sought out to try and get his racing mojo back after a big crash.  There were numerous flashbacks with Doc Hudson (McQueen’s late mentor), and this was a big hit with us.  We all appreciated McQueen’s journey into Doc’s past, reviewing Doc’s career; meeting and training with his mentor, Smokey; and learning that Doc’s greatest pride & joy came not from racing himself, but from training McQueen.

Film Review: ‘Monster Trucks’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 11th, 2017

Joel H., here…

monster-trucks-movie-cgi-creature

Remember what it was like to dream? I’m not referring to our current dreams of better jobs, or more money, or a new car, but dreaming without restriction? As a kid, I dreamed several times of experiencing that bicycle flight in front of the moon with E.T. at the helm. I dreamed of discovering pirate gold and sneaking a kiss from my older brother’s girl like Mikey. I sat in spaceships and fighter jets made of cardboard boxes. I gave life and personality to a slew of GI Joe’s, even little green army men with no functional limbs. I dreamed. There was no lack of depth to those dreams. No impending Trump administration. No knowledge that the guns used for pretend are replicates of actual war machines taking lives every single day. My simple imagination was rampant without knowing otherwise, but I grew up.

4k UHD Review: ‘Goodfellas’!

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

THE FILM

By the time 1990 came around, Martin Scorsese had already made several masterpieces in film, which continue to be praised and talked about to this day. With the likes of ‘Raging Bull‘, ‘Taxi Driver‘, and ‘The Last Waltz‘, we all knew that Scorsese was one of the finest filmmakers and storytellers around. Even with just those three previous films mentioned, you’d know you were in for a treat when Scorsese wanted to show you something. 4K UHD Review: ‘The Great Gatsby’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 25th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

71agcknlail-_sl1127_

THE FILM

Director Baz Luhrmann has created a grand opus filled with shiny costumes, modern music, magical camera tricks, and classic style of early Hollywood film-making to bring to life once again F. Scott Fitzgerald’s beloved and iconic novel ‘The Great Gatsby‘. The film is over-the-top, lavish, and a bit flawed. But that is how the title character is after all. The feel and tone of the film is entrancing, as the visuals take is to the early 20s in New York, where we become infatuated with Gatsby and his American dream.

Film Review: ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 13th, 2015

Janet W., Here…

1D274906429135-x_tdy_fifty_shades_trailer_140724.blocks_desktop_large

Fifty Shades of Grey is fifty shades of annoying.  Opening with a clear comparison of Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) and Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) in the manner that they start their day.  Grey is precise and disciplined while Steele is clumsy and frumpy.  Because of her sick college roommate, Kate (Eloise Mumford), Steele is tasked with interviewing Grey.  Grey will be the commencement speaker for their college graduation ceremony.  Ms. Nervous Knots is clearly out of her league and this intrigues Grey.  This film is nearly a point-by-point attempt at a re-vamping Wild Orchid (1989) with a more screwed up and twisted James Wheeler (Mickey Rourke) and more dingy and childish Emily Reed (Carré Otis).  Don’t get excited, because it is not Wild Orchid. Touch is a major deal-breaker/game-changer in both films.

You Must Watch The ‘What If’ Trailer!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 3rd, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

What-If-600x650

Mark the movie ‘What If‘ at the top of my list of movies to see this year. This trailer is great. ‘What If‘ is a romantic comedy starring Daniel Radcliffe (‘Harry Potter’), Zoe Kazan (‘Ruby Sparks’), Adam Driver (‘Girls’), and Rafe Spall (‘Hot Fuzz’). It’s a story we’ve seen before, but this looks like it’s done perfectly. Basically, Radcliffe plays Wallace who falls in love with a new girl named Chantry (Kazan), but quickly finds out she has a boyfriend. So it’s kind of a wrong-place, wrong-time type scenario.

‘Treme’ Returns for 3rd Season Sept. 23!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 22nd, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

First, the people came back. Then, the crime. Now, more than two years after the near death of a great city, the money is starting to arrive, which would sound like a solution if this were some place other than New Orleans, and this was some other era but America at the millennium. For the people of New Orleans, even the promises of redevelopment come with strings attached, and every dollar that shows up – whether from government disaster relief, or from venture capital, or even from those seeking to remake New Orleans in the wake of Katrina – carries with it new dynamics and new risks. National interest has waned, moving on to the next headline, but those who know and love the Crescent City have no choice. They must find their way back to what matters in the life of their city. However, little of what they can bring to bear yields a quick result, and nothing about New Orleans – its government, its police department and courtrooms, its school system – works as it should. Nothing is easy.  In the end, their only weapons are community. And culture.

BRIDGE – Chapter Nineteen

by Justin Cline on Apr 25th, 2012

CHAPTER NINETEEN

By the eighth Mississippi, Bridge had his map back in hand and a good idea of where he was headed.  It must have been a long walk from the cemetery to The Bethany for a man who’d been forced to vacate his own grave, but in the van it was a short ride from their current location to the outskirts of the city.  The hope in making the trip was to find something—anything—at the gravesite that would point him forward in the investigation.  Between himself and the cat, they had killed off all other viable leads. Bryan Takes One Hell Of A ‘Drive’!!! (A Movie Review)

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 6th, 2011

Hi Bryan Here….

‘Drive’ surprised the hell out of me.  I really didn’t know much about the film before I watched it other than the title and that it starred Ryan Gosling.  While I was watching the movie there were tons of times where I said “Holy Shit!” or I said “Fuuuck” or I said “Hoooly Fuckin’ Moses”!  I had no idea that ‘Drive’ was not only hardcore on every single level, but the character development and story line was some of the best I have seen all year.  ‘Drive’ is an insane thrill ride with a heart of gold.  I loved every psychotic moment of this film.  And I think you will to if you have the stomach for it.

Bryan Becomes A ‘Dead Man’!!! (A Blu-Ray Review)

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 22nd, 2011

Hi Bryan Here…..

‘Dead Man’ might be my favorite Jim Jarmusch film.  Yes, better than ‘Coffee and Cigarettes’, ‘Broken Flowers’, and ‘Ghost Dog’.  The cast of ‘Dead Man’ is amazing with its lead being super star Johnny Depp.  Some think this is a western film.  I like to think of ‘Dead Man’ as the ultimate experimental western.  ‘Dead Man’ is simple and plain AWESOME.  This movie has everything going for it.  The acting, the story, the filming, the story, and the characters.  They all come together to erupt a truly creative and brutal film.  Highly recommended.

Hi Bryan Here….

“The 2011 Toronto Film Festival has unveiled the first part of its slate, and announced that the Davis Guggenheim-directed U2 documentary From The Sky Down will open the festival, which will run from Sept. 8-18.”  In addition to U2, there are quite a bit of amazing sounding films.  Below is the official list of films that have already been locked into place for the festival.  Tons of stars and great sounding movies.

Hi Bryan Here….

Criterion rolls out the red carpet yet again with their release of Satyajit Ray’s ‘The Music Room’.  The film looks stunning in all of its hi-def glory and 1080p transfer.  ‘The Music Room’ is required viewing for any fan of cinema and music.  The film takes a you on a journey of change, depression, growing old, and the class system and weaves them all together with music.  It really is outstanding.

Hi Bryan Here….

WOW.  This was a mighty mighty fun blu-ray set to get through.  Took a while as there are hours and hours of extras and commentaries to listen and watch.  It was great watching all of these again.  Some greater than others.  I haven’t watched all of the Superman films since that tin DVD box set came out several years ago.  Oh man do these newly remastered blu-rays look fucking beautiful in HI-DEF.  So, this particular review will be set up by film.  I will go through all eight discs of the set and outline everything you would ever want to know about them.  From the movie itself to the extras and the audio and video quality.  This is one hell of a set and Warner Bros. and DC went above and beyond the call of making one AWESOME home video release in Superman.

Bryan Finds Out He’s ‘Unknown’!!! (A Review)

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 13th, 2011

Hi Bryan Here….

Here is a little film starring Liam Neeson, January Jones, and Diane Kruger.  A pretty great cast to start with and an interesting enough story line.  Does it work?  Ina way, yes it does.  I’ll say this off the bat.  Many people will compare and bring up Liam Neeson’s prior film, ‘Taken’.  Let me assure you, this  is not ‘Taken’, nor is it as good as ‘Taken’.  Sure it is a fun thrill ride to watch, but it ends up being a “by the book” amnesia film with really no plot twist or turn after the first half of the film.  That being said, ‘Unknown’ is still fun ride to watch.
