Hi Bryan Here…

The other day I posted a story HERE where I talked about an article that a guy who works for Disney wrote about all of those “walkaround” characters  you see at Disney Theme parks such as Mickey, Donald, Goofy, and Pluto.  Basically the greedy asshole suits at Disney wanted to start charging kids and their families a sizeable charge for a “photopass” which would allow the kids and families to take pictures with their favorite characters behind velvet rope with security.

Hey guys, Jana here,

Hayao Miyazaki is a Japanese film director, producer, screenwriter, animator, author and manga artist. The success of his films has invited comparisons with Walt Disney and American directors Steven Spielberg and Orson Welles.

Hey guys, Jana here,

mulan

Walt Disney Pictures has selected the next story up for the live-action remake with ‘Mulan‘. The company has been hell bent on taking successful animated stories, blowing up the fantasy worlds they live in, including the already larger-than-life villains, then dropping the wide-eyed hero into the setting and let the story unfold. This is a pretty cool idea, however Disney has yet to pull a live-action crossover out of their hat that was better than it’s animated mirror.  Read the rest of this entry »

2015 Disney Film Release Dates With Trailers!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Dec 30th, 2014

Hey guys, Jana here,

star-wars-disney-570x307

While the world is focusing on auld lang syne and bringing 2014 to a close, Disney is pointedly looking to the future or “To infinity and beyond!” as Buzz Lightyear would say. Walt Disney Studios has given us a wide list of release dates for 2015 including the first Star Wars since the mouse has taken ownership. It’s a big lineup and will, no doubt, bring in a wega-payday for the company. In the last year, three films, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy‘, ‘Maleficent‘ and ‘Captain America Winter Soldier‘ brought in over $700 million world-wide on their own. It stands to reason they can expect the same from 2015. Let’s kick it off with some animation!

Hello, Jana here,

pirates-of-the-caribbean-5-movie-pirates-of-the-caribbean-5-confirmed-man-tells-tales

Disney is hoping the golden goose lays another blockbuster with ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales“. We’ve got a release date of July 7, 2017. I’m a big Johnny Depp fan, and I love the Pirates movies. There’s a point where you have to let a good thing end while it’s still awesome. The last film ‘On Stranger Tides‘, seemed to begin digging it’s own resting place in Davey Jones’ Locker. I really think that’s where the franchise jumped the proverbial shark. I kind of think Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley‘s departures started the series in a tail spin.

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Disney’s Peter Pan’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 6th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

61ddJpPpQXL

It was so great to see this newly remastered ‘Peter Pan’ from Disney. The image is pristine and is the best this animated film has ever looked.  Plus, Disney decided to give it a 7.1 lossless DTS-HD audio mix, which just sounds amazing.  I can’t believe it has been since 1953 since we first watched this animated instant classic capture the hearts of many.  It’s truly remarkable to have this on blu-ray.

Hi Bryan Here….

‘Wreck-It Ralph’ from Disney is sounding awesome.  The new CG animated Disney film looks to be about a bad villain in a video game who wants to prove he can be a good guy.  Now that just sounds AWESOME.  The press releases says it will be a simple 8-bit video game.  Oh nostalgia.  Sounds like ‘Toy Story’ with a little bit of the ‘Scott Pilgrim’ mixed in.  This could be really good.  Plus it already has some great actors lending their voices for the animated film including: John C. Reilly, Sarah Silveman, Jane Lynch, and Jack McBrayer.  Read the entire press release below.

Five years have past since Disney opened the vault and let loose their animated ‘Peter Pan‘ movie. In 2013, it was the 60th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray. Now, it’s 2018, and we have the 65th Anniversary Blu-ray Signature Edition. This is the same exact Blu-ray release from 2013, but with a few new bonus features and different cover art. Both the 2013 version and this 2018 version come with Digital Copies, which is good, along with a DVD version. If you have the previous edition, there’s really no need to re-buy this one, unless you’re a huge fan or want the new bonus features, which will be listed out below. It’s the same film, the same video and audio presentations as well.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Pinocchio’ Signature Series!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 13th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

518h+RpAlGL

THE FILM

Pinocchio‘ is hands down one of the best films ever made. And it was made by Walt Disney more than 70 years ago in animated form. That’s no joke. On the surface, ‘Pinocchio‘ seems to be about a wooden toy who wants to be a real boy, but right below the surface, there is so much going on, that I cant help but think that Walt himself and his collaborators had many more things to say with this film, which is to say the least, very different than most Disney movies out there – even today.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Tomorrowland’!

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

THE FILM

There’s one hell of a cast and crew at work here for Disney’s ‘Tomorrowland‘, which is loosely based on the famous theme park at Disney resorts. Directed by Brad Bird (‘The Incredibles‘, ‘Ratatouille), produced by Damon Lindelof (‘Lost‘ and ‘Star Trek‘), and starring George ClooneyHugh Laurie, and Britt Robertson, ‘Tomorrowland‘ is a throwback to those old innovative Disney films full of adventure. I felt like a kid again through its two hour run time as I was watching each suspenseful and fun moment on the IMAX screen. That being said, ‘Tomorrowland‘ does have a few problems, but fortunately the good outweighs the bad this time around.

Disney has found, yet, another film to go the live-action route with reaching back to 1963 for the final film before Walt Disney’s death, ‘The Sword in the Stone‘. The project goes to Brian Cogman for the script, Cogman is a writer-producer for HBO’sGame of Thrones‘. GOT, while not as boundary-pushing as ‘The Sword in the Stone‘, is thematically similar and alike in it’s Medieval fantasy genre.

by Red Zeppelbon on Apr 7th, 2015

Hey guys, Jana here,

Star Wars‘ fans form a line, in an organized fashion, those that believe Han shot first (the truth!) to the left, all you misinformed believers that think Greedo was the quicker draw to the right. Blu-ray Review: ‘101 Dalmatians’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 10th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

61LcbbHAp-L

THE FILM

If it weren’t for ‘101 Dalmatians‘, we might not have had any more Disney animated films, including ‘The Lion King‘ or even ‘Wreck it Ralph‘. Back in 1959, ‘Sleeping Beauty‘ failed to live up to expectations and didn’t make enough money for Disney to do another project. In fact, it got so bad at Disney, that people were being let go and the studio doors were on the verge of being shut for good. Can you imagine that? No more Disney animated films after 1959? I know I can’t.

Hello, Jana here,

sw-poster-49

Star Wars fans have been a mixture of excited and perplexed over Episode VII’s announcement. It would be great for us if George Lucas was tapping into his galaxy once again to bring us the latest chapter. Alas, that’s not the case. Lucas sold rights over to Disney and retired to go back to making films in his garage. At least that’s what I remember from an article. At any rate, he’s not running the show this time around. Star Wars isn’t like, say, the James Bond movies, you can’t just change out the lead and let each director have a different version of 007’s world. Star Wars fans want conformity. We’ve grown to love this galaxy and demand that anyone else that touches it, love it as much as we do.

Hi Bryan Here….

Inspired by the beloved stories from A.A. Milne’s books and crafted in Disney’s classic style, “Winnie the Pooh,” is the most critically-acclaimed animated film of 2011.  It is narrated by the voice of John Cleese and features the vocal talents of legendary voice actor Jim Cummings(over 350 voices including Gnomeo & Juliet) and a host of other distinctive actors including Craig Ferguson(TV’s ‘The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson’), Tom Kenny (TV’s ‘SpongeBob SquarePants’), Bud Luckey (Toy Story 3) and musical performances by Zooey Deschanel (indie folk band “She & Him”).

Hi Bryan Here…..

I love when I get to review vintage Disney animated films from my childhood.  It always takes me back to that time when I set in front of the old tube tv with  my VHS and watched away.  Disney has opened their vault to release the classic ‘Fox and the Hound’ film which is packed with the direct to video sequel ‘Fox and the Hound 2’.  The combo pack includes both the blu-rays of both films and the DVD versions.  It was such a treat to see this film again and to see the sequel.  Another great addition to the Disney line of Blu-rays.

A War is Brewing in the Film Industry

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 26th, 2010

We go to the movie theater for the same reason we go to a ball game. It’s not just to see the main event. We do it to smell the smells, devour greasy food, relax with friends and family, escape the everyday, and experience camaraderie with perfect strangers. The laughter, fear, anger, sadness, and joy expressed by the collective magically heighten the experience of the individual.

But something wicked this way comes.

Movie studios want to reduce the time that movies will be shown in

theaters. Instead, they want to be able to provide video-on-demand

service so you can watch new movies from the comfort of your home just

five weeks after theater release. It will only cost you $24.99 per

movie. Also the FCC (which I think should NOT exist) are going to

allow movie studios to activate technology to prevent films sold

through video-on-demand systems from being copied.

This is outrageous. First, if you implement software technology to

prevent movies from being copied, within a couple of weeks, people

will develop ways to get around your technology. You will never be

able to completely prevent pirating. EVER. Don’t fight it, find a way

to work with it. The home video industry still makes tons of money

even while pirated copies are being made.

Movie studios are justifying the quick release of movies on-demand

because the numbers show that 90% of a movie’s gross revenue is made

within the first 30 days of release. These numbers, however, fail to

factor in DVD sales. Last year, home video sales revenue equaled about

10 billion dollars. Early on-demand release will actually reduce DVD

sales. DVD retailers like Best Buy, Target, and Wal-Mart are well

aware of this risk. In an effort to protect their economic interests,

they have threatened litigation against the movie studios.

Since there is a market for physical copies of DVDs and blurays, I

don’t think they should change the model.  A physical copy of anything

is much, much better than a movie streaming online (although

admittedly I am biased since I am a professional collector). But most

importantly, I don’t want to see the death of the movie theater. It is

an important part of our culture – an experience that we should

preserve.

Brooke Barnes from the New York Times wrote this article about the upcoming movie industry war.

SOMETIME in the next few months, there is likely to be an explosion in the movie business. The question is which studio will detonate the bomb.

Tension between studios and theater owners has been simmeringa long time, but it intensified in May, when the Federal Communications Commission issued what appeared on the surface to be an arcane ruling. After two years of prodding from Hollywood, the F.C.C. agreed to let movie studios activate technology to prevent films sold through video-on-demand systems from being copied.

Ho-hum? Hardly. The ruling gave studios the ability to pursue a new business — so-called premium V.O.D. — that may be the industry’s best hope of restoring itself to health, now that the bottom has fallen out of the DVD market.

Right now, theaters get an exclusive period — 120 days, on average — to serve up new movies. Then the releases appear on television video-on-demand services at a price of about $4.99. Armed with the new copy-blocking technology, studios want to offer new movies on video-on-demand services about 45 days after they arrive in theaters, for a premium price of $24.99.

The business opportunity is multifold. With as much as 80 percent of that early V.O.D. revenue going to the studio, movie executives see a new engine to compensate for the sputtering DVD. And for the studios, the need is urgent: DVD sales for the year are expected to total about $9.9 billion, down 30 percent from their peak in 2004, according to Adams Media Research.

Studios also want to cut marketing costs by interweaving advertising for theatrical, DVD and video-on-demand releases; reducing the exclusive “window” given to theaters would make it easier to combine those campaigns. Premium V.O.D. would also bring greater consumer awareness to regular video on demand, which has not caught on as much as other rental options like Netflix, according to a research report by Anthony DiClemente, an analyst at Barclays Capital.

Last but not least, studios are aware that consumers are growing impatient about being unable to access all movies whenever and wherever they want. Layering in an early video-on-demand option might prevent some of those frustrated customers from turning to pirated copies.

“There are people who we believe would like to see movies sooner than later and would pay a premium price to do that,” Robert A. Iger, the chief executive of the Walt Disney Company, told analysts on a conference call last month. “We are going to become aggressive.”

Cable and satellite television providers like Time Warner Cable (which is no longer connected to Warner Brothers) and DirecTV are ready to push the button on premium V.O.D. as soon as they reach a deal with studios. After all, the service would represent another revenue stream for these providers and another way to differentiate themselves with customers. The promise of the new business is one reason that Comcast is so eager for government regulators to clear its deal to take control of NBC Universal, analysts say.

SO what’s the problem? DVD retailers, for a start. The likes of Best Buy and Wal-Mart“have told studios they will retaliate against anyone who tries early-release V.O.D. because of the threat it poses to DVD sales,” Richard Greenfield, an analyst at the financial services company BTIG, wrote in a research note last Monday.

But the real wrath will come from theater owners, who have made it clear that releasing a movie early on video-on-demand services — thus cutting into their window — would be the equivalent of declaring war. Over the summer, the National Association of Theater Owners took out full-page ads in Variety and The Hollywood Reporter making its opposition clear.

The worry for theaters, of course, is that people will be more reluctant to buy movie tickets, at an average cost of almost $8, if they know they can catch the same film just a few weeks later in their living rooms, and for less money than it costs to haul the whole family to the multiplex. Considering that the average moviegoer spends more than $3 on popcorn and soda and the like, the cost of Friday night at the movies for a family of four can easily reach $45 — or much more in cities like New York — even before premium-priced 3-D screenings or possible parking fees are factored in.

“While exhibitors understand the new pressures that a weakened DVD market creates for their studio partners,” the ads read in part, “four decades of box-office growth and three straight years of record-breaking box office argue for caution in tampering with a business model that clearly works.”

The Big Three theater chains — Regal Entertainment, AMC Entertainment and Cinemark — declined to comment, but smaller theater companies have been more vocal.

“Be careful before you cook us all, yourselves included,” wrote Gregory S. Marcus, the chief executive of the Marcus Corporation — the parent of Marcus Theatres, a Midwest exhibitor — in a July opinion article in The Hollywood Reporter.

Exhibitors are also arguing that the copy-blocking technology approved by the F.C.C. won’t work. “If past is prologue, technological locks will be overcome with technological crowbars,” the ads from the National Association of Theater Owners stated.

Adding to this argument was news last week that hackers were able to crack Intel technology used to securely transmit high-definition content between televisions and set-top boxes. (Intel played down the threat, saying that a special device would need to be built to exploit the information.)

Theater owners mean business. When Sony Pictures Entertainment tried a test with“Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs” last year — owners of Internet-connected Bravia televisions could rent that movie before it was available on DVD, for $25 for a month — some theaters yanked the film.

In a similar showdown, Disney’s decision last spring to release “Alice in Wonderland” early on DVD was greeted by boycott calls from theater owners, most forcefully in Britain.

Studio executives say they are going to risk premium V.O.D. anyway, contending that they have little choice, given the DVD downturn. Besides, analysts estimate that 90 percent of a film’s admissions revenue is now generated within 30 days of its release.

(The rebuttal from theater owners is that the data doesn’t take into account second-run and discount theaters, and that there are big exceptions: “Inception,” for instance, was still raking in millions in theaters 10 weeks after its release.)

Protecting the box office is crucial for studios, and for reasons beyond the importance of their ticket-revenue share. For a start, under long-term contracts, premium television networks like HBO and Showtime typically pay for movies using formulas based on domestic box-office revenue. So shrinking ticket sales would also mean shrinking television revenue.

Studios also rely on big theatrical runs to catapult titles into the public consciousness. Without all of the hoopla surrounding a hit at the multiplex — the lines, the marquees, the buzz in the corridors afterward — movies start to feel an awful lot like their more commodified cousin, television.

SO which studio is going to go first, and when? All six of the major studios declined to comment for this article. But multiple movie executives with deep knowledge of the landscape say the first quarter of next year is the target, in part because big Christmas releases like “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” and “Tron: Legacy” give studios extra leverage.

The studios that seem most likely to make a move are Disney, 20th Century Fox and Warner Brothers. In part because its size gives it more muscle than other studios, Warner has historically shown a willingness to rewrite the blueprints for the home entertainment business. It was Warner, for instance, that aggressively pushed to release movies on traditional V.O.D. at the same time the DVDs arrived in stores.

One thing is certain, said a top motion picture agent who requested anonymity so as not to anger his contacts in the industry: “Studios have made it clear they are not interested in testing the waters on premium V.O.D. Once they start, they’re going to do it.”

What do you think?

I am sure you have heard of ILM before or at least seen it in the credits for just about every movie made.  It is the amazing effects company started by Star Wars creator George Lucas 35 years ago.  It was started to create the effects for Star Wars and quickly became the premiere effects company in Hollywood and is virtually in every film in some form or another.

So the Encore movie channel will be airing a documentary in November about the ILM company.  It will be narrated by Tom Cruise and will feature interviews by major actors and directors.

The press release says:

ENCORE PAYS VISUAL TRIBUTE TO OSCAR®-WINNING VISUAL EFFECTS GIANT ILM IN CELEBRATION OF THEIR 35TH ANNIVERSARY WITH ORIGINAL DOCUMENTARY “INDUSTRIAL LIGHT & MAGIC: CREATING THE IMPOSSIBLE”

Tom Cruise Narrates Doc Premiering November 14, 2010
Marathon of Five ILM-Effects Films on Encore

Beverly Hills, CA., September 14, 2010 – Since its founding 35 years ago, Industrial Light & Magic has been the movie industry’s undisputed leader in groundbreaking visual effects, thrilling audiences and making hits into blockbusters. On Sunday, November 14 at 8:00 p.m. (et/pt), Encore presents an original documentary celebrating that legacy. “Industrial Light & Magic: Creating the Impossible” is directed by Academy Award® and Emmy® nominated director Leslie Iwerks and is narrated by Tom Cruise. Encore will also present five ILM-effects films starting at 2:00 p.m. with Jumanji, followed by Hook, Jurassic Park III, Twister and Starship Troopers.

The hour-long special has interviews with filmmakers George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard,  J.J. Abrams and Jon Favreau, actors Samuel L. Jackson and Robin Williams, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and John Lasseter, the chief  creative officer at Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios.  Film and television shows featured in the special include The Abyss, Avatar, Forrest Gump, Jumanji, Jurassic Park, Pirates of the Caribbean, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Robot Chicken, Star Trek (2009), Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Transformers, Twister, Young Sherlock Holmes and The War of the Worlds (2005), which starred narrator Cruise.

Leslie Iwerks’ documentary takes audiences behind the scenes at ILM with in depth interviews with some of the company’s top talent and showcases never before seen footage highlighting many of their pioneering milestones. From creating the first ever computer generated character in a feature film to the latest advancements in visual effects for film franchises like Transformers and Iron Man, ILM has created some of the most memorable movie moments in recent history.

Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) is a division of Lucasfilm Ltd. and was founded by George Lucas in 1975 to create the visual effects for his space epic Star Wars. The studio originated in Van Nuys, California but moved to San Rafael, California to work on The Empire Strikes Back and is now headquartered at the Letterman Digital Arts Center in the Presidio of San Francisco with a sister studio in Singapore.

ILM has worked on nearly 300 films in its 35 year history and has largely been the driving force behind the evolution of modern visual effects.  From the liquid metal man in Terminator 2: Judgment Day to the lifelike digital dinosaurs in Jurassic park, ILM has created some of the most iconic moments in cinematic history.

ILM has received 15 Best Visual Effects Oscars and 25 additional nominations. It has also received 23 Scientific and Technical Awards from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in recognition of the critical role the company’s advances in technology have played in the filmmaking process. ILM is also the only entertainment company to be recognized with the National Medal of Technology.

I just hope it is an depth look at the company and not a broad view of it.  I will be recording it.

Favorite Movies of 2017!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 27th, 2017

Was 2017 a great year for movies? Of course it was. There were some excellent films to be released in 2017. There were also some bad ones for sure, but the focus on this article are some of the Best films that stuck with me long after viewing. Most people will give you their Top 10 list, but this is no Top 10, because there are just so many movies that I loved and feel passionate about, that I find it difficult and unpleasing to rank them.

Instead, these are my favorite movies of 2017, which I hope you’ve seen already. If you haven’t yet, you’re in for a real treat and I can’t wait for you to see them. Some of these films are still in theaters, while some are on Netflix, 4K UHD, and Blu-ray, so you’ll be able to quickly see any of these if you haven’t. I watched over 270 movies that were released in 2017 and these are my absolute favorites. I hope you get to see all of these, because I know you’ll love them. In no particular order…..

Summer time means a million things to different people, but some things we can all agree on. Cook outs, swimming, catching lightning bugs, camping and baseball. It’s just as pure as mom’s apple pie and the star spangled banner and every spring, a new season swings into action and a new hope is born for your team to be a contender and play through October. The national past time has been the basis for a lot of movies and I’m making some sense of them all with my Top 10 favorite baseball movies.

Best Movies of 2015, According To Jana

by Red Zeppelbon on Dec 30th, 2015

Hey guys, Jana here,

PicMonkey Collage

Another year has come and gone and brought with it about a billion movies, some were total crap and a waste of time, but others…oh they were worth every bit of time I spent. Pre-movie hype, post-movie discussion, and the random hours I spent thinking about it in the shower or sitting at a stop-light. Having said that, this is my list of movies that 2015 blessed us with, and maybe a few the year cursed us with.

Hey guys, Jana here,

pirates-of-THE-caribbean-logo

I love Johnny Depp and I loved a few of the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean‘ films with Depp’s interpretation of the complete wild card that is Captain Jack Sparrow. I watched the next two installments and loved the new element that came to play as we met Davy Jones, his crew and the legend built as we saw our heroes fight to take the tentacled captain down. I was getting bored with the third film as the crew searched for Captain Jack. I rolled my eyes when ‘On Stranger Tides‘ brought the noticeable absence of Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, but replaced the girl power with Penelope Cruz. I’ve tried dozens of times to watch that film and have never once made it all the way through it. I knew that sequel was the beginning of the end of a fun franchise. Disney didn’t get the memo.

Take a Look at Pixar’s ‘Brave’ Trailer!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 27th, 2011

Hi Bryan Here….

If you have seen ‘Cars 2’ or you pan on seeing ‘Cars 2’, then you will most likely see Pixar’s upcoming new film called ‘Brave’.  “Brave is set in the mystical Scottish Highlands, where Merida is the princess of a kingdom ruled by King Fergus (Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson). An unruly daughter and an accomplished archer, Merida one day defies a sacred custom of the land and inadvertently brings turmoil to the kingdom. In an attempt to set things right, Merida seeks out an eccentric old Wise Woman (Julie Walters) and is granted an ill-fated wish. Also figuring into Merida’s quest — and serving as comic relief — are the kingdom’s three lords: the enormous Lord MacGuffin (Kevin McKidd), the surly Lord Macintosh (Craig Ferguson), and the disagreeable Lord Dingwall (Robbie Coltrane).”  Well here is a look at the teaser trailer for ‘Brave’.  It looks fantastic.

Hi Bryan Here….

March is here which means spring is on the horizon.  This also means tons of Oscar nominated and Oscar winning films will be released on home video very soon.  Starting today.  In fact, a few have already been released, but, I’m thinking there will be re-issues with more extras and the titles that read “Oscar Winning” on the cover.  I’m very excited about this week in releases.  Tons of great stuff.

As usual, you will get some info about the disc and the extras that come with the movie as well as a personal opinion about the movie and a link to purchase the film over at AMAZON where you can save quite a bit of money, and it will give a small percentage kick back to this site so we can continue bringing you excellent stories and sales.
