Hey guys, Jana here,

Dave Eggers, the scriptwriter and novelist that shares 2nd place of an IFJA Award with Spike Jonze for the script of ‘Where The Wild Things Are‘ has a few pieces of literature he authored that are being retooled for the big screen. Among the titles are ‘Zeitoun‘, ‘A Hologram For The King‘, and ‘The Circle‘. There is one thing Hologram and The Circle have in common besides the same writer and that’s mega-star, Tom Hanks.

Dan Brown’s novels, beginning with ‘The Da Vinci Code’, have made excellent fodder for some seriously successful films. The old adage is true, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. This seems to be the way Sony is viewing their franchise based on Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon.  Tom Hanks, director Ron Howard and producer Brian Grazer have all signed on to the third installment in the series which follows ‘The Da Vinci Code‘ and ‘Angels and Demons‘, ‘Inferno‘.

Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks Teaming Up Again!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Apr 22nd, 2014

Hello, Jana here,

09-steven-spielberg-tom-hanks-1

I’m like any other film-lover and I have favorite directors that I will religiously watch anything they turn out. I love the films of Joss Whedon, Cameron Crowe, Quentin Tarantino and Steven Spielberg among others. Spielberg took a bite out of fame with one of my absolute favorite movies of all-time, ‘Jaws‘ in 1975. Yes, another thing I love is a pun, no matter how bad it can be. Spielberg has far too many epic films to count without devoting a whole article to the greatness that is Spielberg. Some of the highlights are ‘E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial‘, the ‘Indiana Jones‘ films, ‘Schindler’s List‘…and on and on and on.

Tom Hanks Headed to the Broadway Stage!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 9th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

Tom Hanks is in final talks to make his Broadway debut next year in a new play by Nora Ephron.  If this all goes to plan, Hanks has a chance to win a Tony.  “Mr. McAlary, a hard-charging journalist who became one of the most popular tabloid newspaper writers in recent city history, died from colon cancer in 1998, at 41. He covered crime and cops and the major police department corruption scandals of the 1980s and 90s, perhaps most famously the Abner Louima brutality case, which won him the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for commentary.”

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 8th, 2017

The first trailer and poster for the film ‘The Post‘ is standing straight up. It’s a big deal, because it has Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep in the lead roles with Steven Spielberg in the director’s chair. That’s a powerhouse right there. What a great season finale of “The Walking Dead”! There is a lot to talk  about between Rick vs the Governor, Carl vs. Rick and of course all the people that died. Lets get to it!  The scene begins with a pulsating pupil of an eye. As the camera pulls out, you realize it is The Governors eye and that he is in the process of beating up someone. He is talking to the person about all the risks he took with killing the biters. A man replies that he was going to use them on whoever showed up. The Governor replied that he was and that eight of his men died. The Governor then takes another swing and the camera points to Milton taking the blow. The Governor states about how he kept him safe and feed. Milton replies with at as long as he turns the other way. Milton asks him what would his daughter think of the man he has become.

4K UHD Review: ‘Forrest Gump’!

THE FILM

In 1986, author Winston Groom gave us the book ‘Forrest Gump‘, about a simple minded guy who accomplished a lot through his life, including running a shrimping boat and being an astronaut. That book was made into an award winning film called ‘Forrest Gump‘ that starred Tom Hanks as Gump and Robin Wright Penn, amongst other people. Even though there are many differences from the book, this adaptation that director Robert Zemeckis made was truly inspirational, emotional, and a lot of fun.

‘Mama Mia: Here We Go Again’ Sequel is Almost Here!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 21st, 2017

It looks like ‘Mama Mia!‘ is getting the sequel treatment with ‘Mama Mia!: Here We Go Again‘ with everyone returning to their roles. It doesn’t look like Meryl Streep with be the main star here this time, but her and Cher will be seen in the movie. The first film was fun enough and the ABBA music still resonates, but I wonder what music group will be picked this time around. I just hope this isn’t a hasty rehash of the first film.

Film Review: ‘The Post’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 6th, 2017

When you have names like Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, and Meryl Streep coming together for a movie, you expect something out of this world. That’s not really the case with this talented trio in their new film called ‘The Post‘. Don’t get me wrong, ‘The Post‘ is a good film, but like Spielberg’s recent movies in ‘Lincoln‘ and ‘War Horse‘, there is something magical missing. While the performances are all very good and the movie looks visually pleasing at all times, the script and delivery is a bit on the nose with emotion or lack thereof. Still, this is an important movie to watch in our current political climate as I imagine the true story it was based on back in the early 1970s, which paved the way and kept our “freedom of press” in tact.

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

We all remember what took place in New York on January 15th, 2009. Pilots Captain Chelsey ‘Sully’ Sullenberger and First Officer Jeffrey Skiles took an Airbus A320 with 155 passengers aboard out of LaGuardia Airport to their destination. However, a couple of minutes after takeoff, a freak accident with a flock of birds took out both engines of the airplane, leaving the Airbus without any power and no airport immediately in range to land. Making a calculated decision to save everyone’s life, Sully was forced to land the plane in the very cold waters of the Hudson River.

Ah, the timeless combination of film and music. The two have been married since the earliest days of film, all the way back to Don Juan in 1926, which starred the uber-hunky mustachioed John Barrymore and was the first film to include a synchronized musical score.  In fact, the first “talkie” film was 1927’s “The Jazz Singer,” which included a number of quaint musical performances and even a truly and horrifically inappropriate blackface sequence.  However, today we aren’t just here to discuss soundtracks, but rather to shine a spotlight on the movies where music is a main (if not THE main) theme throughout the film.

Film Review: ‘Bridge of Spies’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 14th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

‘Bridge of Spies’ by DreamWorks Studios.

The year 2015 gives us yet another Tom Hanks/Steven Spielberg movie called ‘Bridge of Spies‘ with an added bonus of the Coen Bros. serving as co-writers. Now with a cast and crew like this, I expect something that would live on forever and win all the awards come award season. That’s not really the case here though, as Spielberg’s recent directorial efforts have been lacking a bit. I’m not saying they’re bad, I’m just saying that ‘War Horse‘ and ‘Lincoln‘ were long, slow, dreary period pieces with no real momentum, despite some awards and critical acclaim.

In the world of film, there are specific genres that stand out for me and one of those is war movies. I love different titles for a variety of reasons, the story, or even an actor, in this category there is one primary theme that ties each film together – heroes. Their outstanding courage is what gives us that lump in our throats and a swell of patriotic pride that causes us to lift these characters, real or imagined, to elevated heights. It takes a special kind of person to be a hero, I know I couldn’t do it, but I am eternally grateful for the men and women that take up that mantle and defend the lives and freedoms I hold so dearly.

Zach Galifianakis was originally on tap to play the male lead in the film based on a documentary about domestic partner benefits. The furry, funny man had to step down due to other commitments, making way for Steve Carell to step into the vacated position. The docu followed the story of Laurel Hester and Stacie Andree as the pair fought to amend the Domestic Partnership Act, which would grant pension benefits to domestic partners of all New Jersey public employees. Top Ten Perfectly Cast Roles

The Bard of Avon said it best, “Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.” Some actors are great, and shine in everything they do (Leonardo DiCaprio, Gary Oldman, Daniel Day-Lewis). Some actors are smart enough to pick roles that best use their limited skill sets (Keanu Reeves). This list takes a look at the perfect pairing of actor and role. In this list, you will find a pairing of actor and role so great that the actor ceases to be themselves and instead makes the character take on a life of its own. These pairings are so uniquely theirs that you can’t imagine anyone else taking their place should Hollywood have the audacity to try.

The Top 10 Gangster Movie List!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jan 19th, 2014

Jana B. here,

GangsterListBANNER

Some girls are all into sappy romances or heart touchingly saccharine-sweet movies. Movies that sometime contain a troubled family learning to love a curmudgeonly, absent  grandparent, or a shattered family recovering from the death of one of its immediate member. Sometimes it’s a pet that waltzes, unexpectedly, into a tumultuous atmosphere that teaches everyone to love more before it’s killed in some unimaginative way.

I hate movies like that. I hate books like that and I hate songs like that. If a member of a family is killed, it better be a mafia family, and I get to look forward to their violent, bloody and evil retribution.  I am so fascinated by the inner workings of these ‘families’. I love to see the fronts they use to launder their income and imagine ways I would do it if I was involved.

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 12th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

1355416686-golden_globe_awards

Here are the nominees for the 2014 Golden Globe Awards. Wow, there were a lot of snubs here. And how did ‘Rush‘ make the list for Best Picture? No way! And what about ‘The Way Way Back‘, ‘Mud‘, or ‘Short Term 12‘ not being nominated? For shame. Let me know what you think of this nominee list?

Bill Murray Joins HBO Miniseries ‘Olive Kitteridge’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 20th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

bill-murray2

Bill Murray doesn’t do a whole lot of television anymore, but he has made an exception for HBO’s new miniseries ‘Olive Kitteridge‘, which is based on the award winning novel by Elizabeth Strout. The project will be directed by Lisa Cholodenko (‘The Kids Are All Right‘) and tells the story of a quaint town in New England where crime and steamy affairs happen between everyone. All is chronicled through the eyes of Olive, who will be played by Frances McDormand.

Film Review: ‘Captain Phillips’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 10th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

Tom Hanks

Tom Hanks is back out on the water again with Paul Greengrass‘ ‘Captain Phillips‘, ste true story that was covered in the media a few years ago, where cargo ship captain Richard Phillips (Hanks) and his crew were attacked by Somali pirates off the coast of Africa during a delivery, and where Phillips was actually taken hostage in a tony life boat for a few days. As there have been several survival movies coming out as of recently, this one in particular can sit high with the rest of them, as Greengrass and Hanks do exceptional work and keep this two-hour long suspenseful film on the edge of your seat. I expect high box office returns for this outing as Hanks and the plot will drive people to theaters this weekend.

Hi, Bryan Here….

Sandlot1

Thinking about 20 years ago to when I was thirteen years old and going with my friends, who we all played little league together, to see ‘The Sandlot‘ on the big screen. A film that would inspire us, makes us laugh, cherish our friendship, and love the game. I remember seeing it a total of five times in the theater, with each time getting better and better. And twenty years later, ‘The Sandlot‘ still holds up as seeing it for the first time all over again. And I had the honor and privelige to discuss ‘The Sandlot‘ and other things with the director of the film David M. Evans and actor Patrick Renna, who played Hamilton ‘Ham’ Porter a.k.a The Great Hambino.

Spielberg is a very busy man these days.  Not only is he the jury president for the upcoming 2013 Cannes Film Festival, but he working on ‘Robopocalypse‘, ‘Jurassic Park IV‘, another war series with Tom Hanks, ‘Under the Dome‘, ‘When Worlds Collide‘, amongst several other big projects. Perhaps the most interesting is that he is not developing the dream project of the late Stanley Kubrick, which is ‘Napoleon‘.

Film Review: ‘Cloud Atlas’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 23rd, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

‘Cloud Atlas’ is not just a movie you view, it’s a full experience.  Only a few films can hold that title of being an experience and not just a film we casually watch on a weekend.  The Wachowski siblings and Tom Tykwer did a flawless job in adapting David Mitchell’s novel to the big screen.  I believe that ‘Cloud Atlas’ is a milestone in filmmaking with superb acting, an original way to tell multiple stories, and some of the best editing I have ever seen.  Not only is ‘Cloud Atlas’ a visual experience, but it is a spiritual experience, at least to me it was.  This 3 hour film is one of the better films of the past decade.

Hi, Bryan Here…

Here is a 6 minute trailer for ‘Cloud Atlas’.  This definitely looks epic, which is based on David Mitchell’s magnificent story, which spans 100’s of years.  Tom Hanks, Jim Broadbent, Halle Berry, Ben Whishaw, Jim Sturgess, Susan Sarandon, and Hugh Grant star. It looks like Tom Hanks plays several different characters and Hugh Grant looks like something out of Mel Gibson’s ‘Apocalypto’.  The Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer directed this, which they brought us the ‘Matrix’ trilogy and ‘Speed Racer’.  This opens October 26th.

Piers Handling, CEO and Director of TIFF, and Cameron Bailey, Artistic Director of the Toronto International Film Festival, made the first announcement of films to premiere at the 37th Toronto International Film Festival. 4K UHD Review: ‘Thor: Ragnarok’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 26th, 2018

THE FILM

Thor is starring in his third stand-alone film called ‘Thor: Ragnarok‘ and brings a much needed change to the character in the best possibly way. Thor now has a fun personality and great comedic timing, mostly due to Chris Hemsworth amazing acting chops here. In addition to that, the film is steeped in a hypnotic, yet hyper-active color scheme that looks like Willy Wonka and Andy Warhol got together and decorated a city. In fact, Wonka’s theme ‘Pure Imagination’ is a song that plays in the film. It’s not all cold and stiff dialogue here anymore with brown or earth toned aliens and robots that Thor has to use his hammer to fight. Everyone and everything is covered in bright primary and pastel colors that creates a breath of fresh air in this stale universe. That’s all thanks to filmmaker Taika Waititi for giving his unique vision on this big budget film ($180 million). In previous Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, particularly with Thor, things have been sour and gloomy.

THE FILM

We’ve seen a ton of versions of ‘King Kong‘ over the decades from the 1933 version to the Jeff Bridges version in the 1970s, and even more recently, the 2005 version that was directed by ‘Lord of the Rings‘ director Peter Jackson. ‘King Kong‘ has been a staple in entertainment and pop culture since he debuted in the early 30s and he is showing no signs of stopping, thanks to Warner Bros.and Legendary Pictures who are taking their cues from Marvel and creating their own universe called the ‘MonsterVerse‘.

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 14th, 2017

Dan M., here….

landscape-1478512906-beauty-and-the-beast-movie

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (1991) is in the top 2 Disney animated movies of all-time. I’ll only allow The Lion King, which has a live action version due in 2019 or 2020, to be ranked ahead of it. This isn’t a debate. These are facts. Beauty and the Beast (animated) is a masterpiece from songs to characters, which is why I loved that this new live-action movie stayed so true to the animated version. It was an extremely enjoyable two hours with some really great moments and I look forward to seeing it again.

Top 10 Horribly Cheesy Scenes in Otherwise Decent Movies!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 30th, 2015

Paul N., Here…

DirtyDancing3-lg

I am not claiming that all of the following movies are cinematic works of art. Some of these films might be considered mediocre at best. However, they do all have one thing in common; all of them suffer from having that one scene that takes audiences out of the moment and makes them groan in disbelief.  This list includes movies that were meant to be taken seriously. So over-the-top comedies and machismo action flicks will not be found as they are created with the intent of being ridiculous.

Bryan’s Best and Worst of 2014 List!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 22nd, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

Wright_39_s_Top_10_Films_of_2014

I can’t believe how fast this year has gone by. 2014 was an interesting year to say the least, most of which was great. Movie-wise, I think 2014 had some excellent films filling its theaters, but of course it had some real stinkers too. Below is my list of the Best and Worst films of 2014 with some added categories down at the bottom. I believe this year I watched over 145 new films, theatrically speaking and it was very difficult to narrow them down from 25. After some chocolate snacks covered in marshmallow cream, I finally had a TOP 10. But when you talk about the Best movies, you have to mention the worst too. My list tends to be a tad bit different from others, but hey, I’m twisted. I highly encourage you to seek out these movies – good or bad and enjoy the rest of your year.

Re-Cast: ‘The Three Amigos’!!

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

three-amigos-01

Here is our 34th episode of ‘The Multi-Media Men‘ and with one of our infamous Re-Cast segments.  We had a lot of fun with this one. We went ahead and recast ‘The Three Amigos‘, which starred the funniest three people in the world – Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Chevy Chase. It’s damn near impossible to remake and even recast this film, because it is indeed perfect, but in this day and age with so many reboots and remakes, it just might happen. So here are some of our suggestions on who should play which role? Do you agree with us? We hope to see this at least on the Broadway stage sometime soon as a musical. And please let us know what you think by going to our FACEBOOK page, which you should visit to catch up on all the latest information. Hello Walking Dead fans!!! I don’t know about you, but I am super pumped that this season of The Walking Dead.  I cannot wait to see if The Governor fall this season or not. Let’s get to it.  The season finale left us with Merle and Darrell standing in the middle of a wrestling ring about to fight to the death. The Governor was standing with that sick smile on his face watching and Andrea was being held back to prevent her from busting in on it.  The show starts with the continuation of that scene. Andrea is pleading with the Governor to stop the fight because Daryl is her friend. The Governor says that it’s not up to me anymore, the people have spoken. The Governor tells Merle that it is brother against brother and to fight to the death. Merle states that his loyalty lies with the town and begins to beat on Daryl. Walkers are now brought out and when Merle had Daryl on the ground, he tells him to follow his lead and that he is going to get them out of the town. Rick and Maggie then appear and begin to shot out the lights and at people. Rick throws a gas bomb and Daryl and Merle get away. Andrea gets on her knee and sees the fall of the town while The Governor watches Merle and Daryl leave.

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Frankenweenie 3D’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 11th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here…..

91MXDQLvk6L._AA1500_

I was much impressed with Tim Burton’s remake of his own short-fil of the same title, ‘Frankenweenie’, about a boy who brings back to life his dead dog in the vein of Frankenstein.  Burton really has made much of any original film in the last ten years, besides ‘Big Fish’, and in my opinion, his remakes aren’t good, but with this one, it seemed like a return from the director I grew up with and learned to love, despite my loathing of his remake films.  ’Frankenweenie’ was very entertaining and a lot of fun.

‘Frankenweenie’ was very entertaining and a lot of fun.

Hi, Bryan Here….

Got a late start on this column due to screenings and being on a short vacation, which was AMAZING.  But alas, the weekly column you all look forward to is out.  Sorry for the delay.  Quite a bit of great titles this week including Indiana Jones on bluray.    As usual in this article, you will get some info about the disc and the extras that come with the movie as well as a personal opinion about the movie and a picture-link to purchase the film over at AMAZON where you can save quite a bit of money, and it will give a small percentage kick back to this site so we can continue bringing you excellent stories and bizarre tales. So click on the pictures and start saving.

Enjoy and Here We Go!!

Criterion Collection Titles For December 2012!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 17th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

The good folks over at Criterion have just announced their titles for December, 2012.  There are some really cool titles for December.  One  title I have waited for years to own on criterion.  Another title is actually Christopher Nolan’s first film, ‘Following’, which is very exciting.  If this is any indication, we might get future Nolan films on Criterion sooner than later, which means a possible Dark Knight Criterion. After all, with Criterion, most director’s who get a film in at Criterion, tend to get more of their films in that pot.   So here’s hoping.  Sadly, no announcement of ‘Good Burger’ or any of the Ernest movies yet, but hopefully in the year 2013, we will get at least one of those.  I can’t wait until December now.  Thanks, Criterion.  Thanks.
