Hey guys, Jana here,

the-mummy-poster

I love Universal’s monster movies and I couldn’t have been more thrilled when I heard the company was rebooting the films into huge tentpole events all the while adding more depth to the classic monster universe. First up for renovation was ‘The Mummy‘ with Tom Cruise attached. Say what you will about him personally, or even religiously, but the man can carry a film and I’m nothing but excited for it. I suppose Universal hopes others feel that way, and have gifted us a little teaser to give us a small taste of what this movie can be.

Hey guys, Jana here,

GOLDEN GLOBES TOM CRUISE WITH AWARD

Universal has made no secret about their wanting to re-launch their original monster universe. You know, The Mummy, Dracula, Frankenstein, The Invisible Man, all the favorites, and why not? These are great stories that can be excellent every time they’re retold. What will make the difference now, besides having a damn good special FX team, is the star. You’ve got to have some massive star-power to anchor a film of this magnitude, especially if it’s the first of their reboots on the monster series, they want it to go off with a global bang.

“Six shots. Five dead. One heartland city thrown into a state of terror. But within hours the cops have it solved: a slam-dunk case. Except for one thing. The accused man says: You got the wrong guy. Hi Bryan Here….

Morgan Freeman and Tom Cruise will be starring alongside in ‘Oblivion’.  Directed by Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy), ‘Oblivion’ follows Cruise who is  the last man on a post-apocalyptic and nearly uninhabitable Earth, who stays behind to repair ships that hunt down and blast a virulent alien species.  And Freeman will play a vital part of the film, but that role is known at this time.

Hi Bryan Here….

So it has been a few years since the J.J. Abrams directed Mission Impossible 3 film which was actually really good.  Phillip Seymour Hoffman did an amazing job in the film, and Tom Cruise was fun to watch.  This film looks to amp up everything from the 3rd film to the 11th degree, but is that a smart move?  Only time will tell.  I hope you enjoy the trailer.  I hated the pink/eminem song in it, but when they got that Mission Impossible theme in there, I admit, I got giddy.  The film opens in December of this year.

Back in 1992, Tom and Jack worked on a film called “A Few Good Men” which that famous line still gets quoted today.  Both of those actors were superb in that film.

Now it seems they might be working together again.  In a comedy.

The film is called “El Presidente” and is written by Dan Goor, who has written for The Daily Show and Conan.  The film will be about “a dedicated Secret Service agent assigned to protect a bumbling and degenerate ex-president.”

Cruise would play the agent of course and Warner Bros. has put an offer out to Jack to play the ex-president.

“The story follows an overly-committed Secret Service agent who is assigned to guard the country’s worst former president, a bumbling sleaze. It’s a mundane and boring job — until there’s a threat made on the ex-president’s life, forcing the duo to go on the run together.”

I wouldn’t be surprised if a few other BIG names were added to this cast.

Your thoughts?

Hey guys, Jana here,

GTY_dwayne_johnson_jef_140618_16x9_992

Disney is going all retro and dipping back into one of the original theme park attractions that opened when Disneyland did to find Jungle Cruise and make a movie based on the ride. In a little bit of an ironic twist, The Jungle Cruise was vaguely based on a film to begin with – ‘The African Queen‘ with simulating 1930’s adventures from a British explorer’s lodge aboard a tramp steamer. From there, the waterways were open leading you through various tropical locales simulating a riverboat cruise down several major rivers of Asia, Africa and South America.

Film Review: ‘Edge of Tomorrow’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 5th, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

I’m very glad that the science-fiction genre is back and doing very well these days. The more sci-fi in theaters, the better. And we have what seems a pretty good lineup this summer of movies that involve everything you could want in a science-fiction film. Here to start off June 2014 is ‘Edge of Tomorrow‘, formally titled ‘All You Need Is Kill‘, which is based on the 2004 novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka of the same name. Director Doug Liman (‘Swingers‘, ‘Go‘, ‘The Bourne Identity‘) took a swing at this $178 million dollar budget film and hit a home-run.

4K UHD Review: ‘The Commuter’!

THE FILM

(This film portion was written by Fernando Martinez)

SOMEONE PLEASE STOP TAKING LIAM NEESON’S FAMILY!!! Ok, so maybe ‘The Commuter‘ isn’t so much about having his family ‘Taken’, but they get threatened to get taken, and that’s close enough.

So “The Commuter” is here simply to prove that Liam Neeson is still an action hero, and to be fair, he is probably our best action hero.  At age 65, he’s doing stuff that Tom Cruise wishes he could have done in his 30’s.  Actually, this felt like a role that was written for Tom Cruise until someone realized that Tom Cruise is box office poison but everyone loves Liam Neeson probably because of Love Actually.

Film Review: ‘Rampage’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Apr 11th, 2018

There really isn’t any point in denying that Dwayne The Rock Johnson is the biggest movie star in Hollywood right now, but he might also be the best. Nobody, except early Will Smith, can star in, sell, and market a movie the way he can. His power to entertain audiences with ridiculous premises is undeniable. Rampage is stupid, big, and insane, but it’s also obnoxiously entertaining and a joy to watch.

Film Review: ‘Pacific Rim: Uprising’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 22nd, 2018

Alright lets get the plot out of the way, shall we? Pacific Rim: Uprising takes place ten years after the final battle of the first film in which Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba) gave his life to stop the Kaiju attacks. Stacker’s son, Jake, is played by John Boyega of Star Wars fame and is a promising Jaeger (the big robots) pilot who quit his training and does some underground criminal activity at the start of the film. The Jaeger program has evolved since we last saw the program where a new, younger crew defends the planet. A young girl creates her own Jaeger and is captured with Jake, which leads them to both join/rejoin the program. Of course a rogue Jaeger seems to be causing trouble and might be working with the Kaiju to reopen The Breach and release new monsters. Jake teams up with his former rival Nate (Scott Eastwood) and the young new recruits to stop the World from being destroyed and honor his father’s legacy.

Jana’s Best of 2017!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jan 1st, 2018

Hey guys, Jana here,

I know these “Best of 2017” lists should technically be published in 2017, but why would I start 2018 any differently than I lived the majority of my adult life: Procrastinating and underachieving. What can I say? That’s my wheelhouse.

For a year that put a spotlight on some of the shittiest behavior by some of the Hollywood elite, it was actually a good year for TV and movies. I didn’t limit myself in number because as I moved on with the brackets, I felt like I was making ‘Sophie’s Choice‘ on some of these, so they’re all getting in! I’m feeling my inner-Oprah here, You’ve made the list! You made the list! EVERYBODY made the list!! In order to spare myself any arguments, I’m stating up front that my picks for the “Best of 2017” are not edited in regards to scandal or hideous human behavior.

Film Review: ‘American Made’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 29th, 2017

Audrey E., here….

Cocaine is a hell of a drug. Globally, it is the second most popular and in the ’80’s, it was king. And Director Doug Liman wants you to know that one American is partly responsible for not only the narcotic’s rise in popularity, but also for fueling one of the largest cartels in global history. In the new action biopic, ‘American Made‘, Tom Cruise flies high and returns to familiar aviation territory as Barry Seal, a TSA pilot turned drug smuggler. This role really puts Tom back into his adventurous element and is easily one of his best performances in recent memory. He proves that his charm and charisma isn’t lost, and personal judgements aside, sometimes it takes crazy to play crazy.

Universal Pictures is rebooting their monster movie franchise and the first tent pole to be staked is ‘The Mummy‘ debuting on June 9, 2017. Director Alex Kurtzman (‘People Like Us‘) worked with a stellar cast to kick off this new universe where all the films will be entwined and venture into each other’s films  à la the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We see the first crossover as Rusell Crowe’s Dr. Henry Jekyll is very visible in this film, or at least in the trailer. Film Review: ‘Jack Reacher: Never Go Back’!

Liz T., here…

As I watched the latest installment in the film versions of Lee Child’s Jack Reacher novels, I couldn’t help but chuckle at the irony. Never Go Back took on a new meaning. Many fans of the novels were appalled and aghast when Tom Cruise, a visual polar opposite, was cast for the lead role. The initial film was not a box office hit and many were disappointed. Watching Director Edward Zwick’s attempt at the second movie, it is apparent that mistakes in the conversion from novel to film are so extreme that, sadly, there is no going back.

Ten Great Lesser-Known Films Starring Big Name Actors!!

The following is a list of ten good films with big-named actors that somehow slipped under the general radar. I’m not saying they are completely unknown, but based upon ticket sales, it certainly seems like they slipped the notice of the general public. These are all solid films that, should you enjoy these actors, you definitely want to check them out (the films, not the actors – although to each their own, I guess).

There’s a fine line between clever satire and biting criticism. Too often, people cross that line inadvertently and thus alienate those they are attempting to speak to. The task of walking that fine line becomes even more difficult when the subject matter is something as popular (and polarizing) as Christianity. Believe Me takes a satirical look at evangelism while simultaneously holding fast to ideals popular among that same target audience.

Working up a script for the high-flier is Justin Marks, who is currently in negotiations to work on ‘Top Gun 2‘. Paramount, Skydance and Jerry Bruckheimer are backing this highly anticipated sequel. Bruckheimer was with Disney but has moved to Paramount in April and is jumping in with both feet. I’m seriously confused as to what made it take so long for them to get to sequel stage in the first place. A John Grisham novel is like a mug of coffee on a stormy day, a glass of wine after the kids are asleep, or even a Xanax when you want to rip someone’s head off. The point is, it’s a calming, reassuring presence. It’s going to be an intense, legal, thrill ride that has a feel-good ending. Grisham’s tried and true writing style is gripping, authentic and something that lends itself to film adaptation easily. This has been the case with ‘The Firm‘, ‘The Pelican Brief‘, ‘The Client‘ and ‘A Time to Kill‘ among several others. There is even a complete departure from his norm evident in ‘Christmas With The Kranks‘.

The Top 20 Vampire Movies Of All Time!!!

I love making lists. Grocery lists. Bucket lists. Holiday lists. Favorite movie lists. Favorite VAMPIRE movie lists. I bet that got your attention, didn’t it? This is MY list of the top 20 Vampire movies ever made. Why did I point out that it was MY list? Easy. So you read this knowing it wasn’t an Academy vote that got a movie on this list. No one paid me to promote their movie. However, I’m NOT against this, just to be clear. Why spend time putting movies in a list? Maybe it satisfies some Freudian lack of paternal affection I suffered as a child. But the real answer is, “Why wouldn’t I make a list as awesome as this?”

Film Review: “Oblivion”

by Woozie on Apr 19th, 2013

Suzanne here,

Screen shot 2013-04-19 at 7.10.40 PM

Sci-Fi action movies always strive to be epic – to catch the same feeling that you had at the end of your first viewing of Star Wars or 2001 – and Oblivion is no exception to reaching for that feeling. Though it doesn’t reach the exact level of these movies, this new feature comes close by borrowing from many of the sci-fi movies we love but assembling them in a fresh way. Oblivion is a great film with wonderful effects, expansive scenery, a moving soundtrack, and a performance that reminded why we love Tom Cruise.

Film Review: ‘Oblivion’

by Gumbercules9000 on Apr 19th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

oblivion-movie-poster-tom-cruise-joseph-kosinski-featured

It’s been a great couple of years for science fiction fans. The sci-fi genre has shown its big head again, and the masses have seem to be eating it all up.  No matter what your opinion on a particular sci-fi film of recent, you can’t deny that the genre is back with a vengeance. Films like ‘Looper’ brought the future and time travel aspects to a great level of entertainment, whereas ‘Cloud Atlas’ made us think and at times confused us as to what was going on. None the less, it was a giant spectacle on screen, much of like we have seen many times before.

The New Trailer for ‘Oblivion’ Looks Amazing!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 13th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

oblivion-movie-poster-tom-cruise-joseph-kosinski-featured-660x446

I’m so excited that sci-fi films are back in a HUGE way. Since ‘Prometheus‘, it seems like every big director wants to be in the sci-fi game again. Well, the first trailer we saw a month or so ago for ‘Oblivion‘ didn’t do much in the way a sci-fi film should in making the fans giddy. But this new trailer most certainly does just that. This is on the top of my list this year to see.

Film Review: ‘Jack Reacher’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 20th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

I was pleasantly surprised with the film adaptation of Lee Child‘s novel series on the character ‘Jack Reacher‘.  I was sorely let down by the film adaptation of ‘Alex Cross‘, and did not want another stinker like that.  Well, when you have talent like Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise, expect a strong script, great character development, and one hell of a fun thrill ride.  ‘Jack Reacher‘ hits the mark in more ways than one.

Bryan Reviews ‘Rock Of Ages’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 14th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here…

‘Rock Of Ages’ is an 80’s Rock n’ Roll orgy turned up to eleven.  I have no doubt that 80’s rock music fans will eat this up and rock themselves out in the theater.  This musical is based on Chris D’ Arienzo’s Broadway play and has been adapted to the big screen in a major and hilarious way with an allstar cast.  Plus they got Adam Shankman (they guy who directed the remake of ‘Hairspray’) to direct this 80’s rock opus.  ‘Rock Of Ages’ is over-the-top ridiculous, campy, silly, but one hell of a good time.  You’ll leave the theater singing your favorite Twisted Sister song and wanting to change your hair into a mullet.

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 29th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

I really don’t understand why they would want to remake ‘Top Gun’.  In my opinion, ‘Top Gun’ is the most overrated film in cinema history.  It’s one of the most boring films I have seen and not to mention it hold’s the gold medal for most homo-erotic film ever made.  Well according to HWR, Peter Craig, who wrote ‘The Town’ has been hired to write the sequel for ‘Top Gun’ for Paramount.

Sam Raimi (Evil Dead) and Bill Block (producer of District 9) have tapped into Andrew Marlowe’s script called “EDF”.

Someone over at Vulture has read the script and said it is a cross between “Top Gun” and “Independence Day” with a hint of “The Last Starfighter”.  The title “EDF” stands for Earth Defense Force.  Not sure if that will stick.  It is supposed to be about Earth’s response to an imminent alien invasion.

Now I have faith in Sam Raimi for the most part.  I will completely forgive him for Spider-Man 3, and Bill Block still has not done wrong.  I’d like to see what Raimi can do with an alien flick because he sure knows how to deal with monsters and demons.

I just hope there is a volleyball scene in EDF.  Top Gun Style.

Not enough Tom Cruise posts.

I am sure you have heard of ILM before or at least seen it in the credits for just about every movie made.  It is the amazing effects company started by Star Wars creator George Lucas 35 years ago.  It was started to create the effects for Star Wars and quickly became the premiere effects company in Hollywood and is virtually in every film in some form or another.

So the Encore movie channel will be airing a documentary in November about the ILM company.  It will be narrated by Tom Cruise and will feature interviews by major actors and directors.

The press release says:

ENCORE PAYS VISUAL TRIBUTE TO OSCAR®-WINNING VISUAL EFFECTS GIANT ILM IN CELEBRATION OF THEIR 35TH ANNIVERSARY WITH ORIGINAL DOCUMENTARY “INDUSTRIAL LIGHT & MAGIC: CREATING THE IMPOSSIBLE”

Tom Cruise Narrates Doc Premiering November 14, 2010
Marathon of Five ILM-Effects Films on Encore

Beverly Hills, CA., September 14, 2010 – Since its founding 35 years ago, Industrial Light & Magic has been the movie industry’s undisputed leader in groundbreaking visual effects, thrilling audiences and making hits into blockbusters. On Sunday, November 14 at 8:00 p.m. (et/pt), Encore presents an original documentary celebrating that legacy. “Industrial Light & Magic: Creating the Impossible” is directed by Academy Award® and Emmy® nominated director Leslie Iwerks and is narrated by Tom Cruise. Encore will also present five ILM-effects films starting at 2:00 p.m. with Jumanji, followed by Hook, Jurassic Park III, Twister and Starship Troopers.

The hour-long special has interviews with filmmakers George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard,  J.J. Abrams and Jon Favreau, actors Samuel L. Jackson and Robin Williams, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and John Lasseter, the chief  creative officer at Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios.  Film and television shows featured in the special include The Abyss, Avatar, Forrest Gump, Jumanji, Jurassic Park, Pirates of the Caribbean, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Robot Chicken, Star Trek (2009), Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Transformers, Twister, Young Sherlock Holmes and The War of the Worlds (2005), which starred narrator Cruise.

Leslie Iwerks’ documentary takes audiences behind the scenes at ILM with in depth interviews with some of the company’s top talent and showcases never before seen footage highlighting many of their pioneering milestones. From creating the first ever computer generated character in a feature film to the latest advancements in visual effects for film franchises like Transformers and Iron Man, ILM has created some of the most memorable movie moments in recent history.

Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) is a division of Lucasfilm Ltd. and was founded by George Lucas in 1975 to create the visual effects for his space epic Star Wars. The studio originated in Van Nuys, California but moved to San Rafael, California to work on The Empire Strikes Back and is now headquartered at the Letterman Digital Arts Center in the Presidio of San Francisco with a sister studio in Singapore.

ILM has worked on nearly 300 films in its 35 year history and has largely been the driving force behind the evolution of modern visual effects.  From the liquid metal man in Terminator 2: Judgment Day to the lifelike digital dinosaurs in Jurassic park, ILM has created some of the most iconic moments in cinematic history.

ILM has received 15 Best Visual Effects Oscars and 25 additional nominations. It has also received 23 Scientific and Technical Awards from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in recognition of the critical role the company’s advances in technology have played in the filmmaking process. ILM is also the only entertainment company to be recognized with the National Medal of Technology.

I just hope it is an depth look at the company and not a broad view of it.  I will be recording it.

Film Review: ‘Foxcatcher’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 25th, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

Foxcatcher

Director Bennett Miller has chosen his four films wisely. Starting with ‘The Cruise‘ back in 1998, Miller has only three more films on his resume, including ‘Foxcatcher‘. The previous two were ‘Capote‘ was an Oscar winner as well as ‘Moneyball‘. Miller has an uncanny knack for telling compelling stories that are based on real life events and engaging the audience to not only be entertained, but to think and discuss these characters and sometimes real people’s motives in what they did in their particular story. You can add to that, Miller’s success in getting his actors to win Oscars almost across the board, and this very dark and creepy film ‘Foxcatcher‘ is no different.

Film Review: ‘Draft Day’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Apr 10th, 2014

Rebecca S., Here…

DRAFT DAY

I have not been excited about a Kevin Costner movie since before I had my first kiss, which was Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. And that came out in 1991 when I was 11, and let’s face it, I was going to see Christian Slater.  It was the last Costner movie that I saw in theaters, though I have sat through or fallen asleep during his other films like Waterworld and The Postman.  So when I was asked to go see Draft Day, a movie I knew absolutely nothing about going into the theater except that it was about either the NFL or NBA  (Do other sports have draft days?), I took my husband along for moral support/sports clarification just in case. This movie had all the makings of a perfect storm of being truly awful and I had a depraved eagerness to write this review in order to drop the hate bomb on Costner. But man, was I wrong. This movie was good. Really good.

Neil Young: Journeys Blu-Ray (REVIEW)

by NapkinArt on Jan 5th, 2013

51iqgP9I1sL._SL500_AA300_Howdy Classic Rock fans, Napkin Art Here…

I have just one question: Who the f*ck doesn’t love Neil Young?

The ‘Grandaddy of Grunge’ has been on quite a roll over the last few years, musically and artistically, releasing several critically acclaimed albums, an autobiography (finally), not to mention releasing the long, long-awaited “Neil Young Archives: Volume 1” to the masses, proving again and again that ‘rust never sleeps.’ After all, Young is pretty old for a rock and roll star. However, his love for making music and shredding guitars on stage never ceases to wane, as is evident in his latest concert documentary film, “Journeys,” from Shakey Pictures and Sony Pictures Classics.
