‘Last Flag Flying’ waves over Blu-ray!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 14th, 2017

Last Flag Flying‘ is coming to Blu-ray on January 30th and will be available digitally on January 16th. The film is directed by Richard Linklater (Dazed and Confused, Everybody Wants Some, Boyhood) and stars Steve Carell, Bryan Cranston, and Laurence Fishburne, and is based on Darryl Ponicsan’s book of the same name. The movie focuses on three older men who all served in Vietnam together. Fast forward many years later, they are all reunited when one of their son’s has died in the Iraq war and they road trip to bury the fallen. It’s a different kind of movie for sure in Linklater’s list of movies, but he proves that he can tackle any subject, even if it isn’t as silly or fun as the above mentioned films of his. There will be audio commentaries, behind the scenes featurettes, deleted scenes, and more included on this Blu-ray. Below is more information on the release.

Fantastic Fest‘ has released their 2nd wave of programming with a huge roster that would work as an entire film fest on its own! Add it to the first wave programming seen here, and by Jupiter’s Cock, it’s going to be exciting!!! There will be advance screenings of ‘The Martian‘, ‘High-Rise‘, ‘Green Room‘, and ‘The Keeping Room‘.

“This is a big year for genre cinema. We’re exceptionally proud to honor incredible filmmakers and welcome back some of Fantastic Fest’s favorites,” said Tim League, Fantastic Fest and Alamo Drafthouse CEO/Founder.

Sticking true to Fantastic Fest’s penchant for chaos and explosive events, they welcome Itchy-O to Austin for the first time. A blazing, 32-member aural assault from the darkest depths of Colorado, Itchy-O is a wholly immersive, musical experience on a massive scale. Said festival director Kristen Bell, “We cannot wait for them to unleash their percussive mayhem on our audience as hysteria has a welcome home at Fantastic Fest.”

See below for the full lineup of newly announced film titles for Fantastic Fest 2015. Final wave of titles to be announced shortly.

Definitely the place to go if you love genre films as they feature the newest films from all categories featuring in horror, fantasy, sci-fi, action  from all over. Some of the best and most loved films have had their world premieres at the festival. Hoping to take its place next to huge hits like ‘There Will Be Blood‘, ‘Zombieland‘ and ‘Apocalypto‘ is ‘Tusk‘. The oddly named flick comes from the brilliant and irreverent mind of Kevin Smith.

Classic Waxxx: Ringo Starr “Old Wave”

by NapkinArt on Jul 19th, 2011

Let’s face it. Everyone loves Ringo, the fun-lovin’ drummer from the world’s greatest rock n’ roll band, The Beatles. Admit it. You’ve got all the records with Ringo’s head circled in red like some crazed lunatic, hoping to snip a little piece of hair from his mop top if he ever crossed your path (hey, it’s happened to him before!) But, did you know Ringo made some incredible solo albums on his own?

“Old Wave”, Ringo Starr’s ninth studio album to be exact, is one of the most over-looked and underrated albums of his career. Starr enjoyed much commercial success with his post-Beatles  albums, such as the self-titled “Ringo” and follow-up “Goodnight Vienna”, featuring a who’s who of rock royalty pitching in on playing and recording. However, by the time Starr recorded “Old Wave”, the scene and atmosphere of Starr’s personal life was a different story. Read the rest of this entry »

by Red Zeppelbon on Jan 18th, 2018

Hey guys, Jana here,

It’s a new year and we’re a few days closer to the debut of the ‘Tomb Raider‘ reboot which will hit theaters March 16. The film comes from Norwegian film director Roar Uthaug (‘The Wave‘, ‘Escape‘), while the screenplay comes from screenwriters Alastair Siddons (‘Trespass Against Us‘), and Geneva Robertson-Dworet. Her credits include some pretty big up and coming flicks like a ‘Dungeons & Dragons‘ film, ‘Captain Marvel‘, ‘Gotham City Sirens‘, and ‘M.A.S.K.: Mobile Armored Strike Kommand‘.

To carry out the visions of these filmmakers, they’ve brought an amazing cast on board. Alicia Vikander will take over the Lara Croft role, with Kristin Scott Thomas, Hannah John-Kamen, Walton Goggins, and Dominic West all lending their talents to this big-screen spectacle.

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

shane-jump

As I’m recovering from seven insane days of ‘Wrestlemania 32‘ in Dallas, TX., I’ve had time to reflect, contemplate, saturate, and regurgitate every I event I attended. I had my box of Booty O’s to make sure I wasn’t Booty thru the weekend, met some good people, watched some amazing matches, talked with some WWE Superstars, and lost my voice when Shane-O-Mac put his life on the line for the WWE Business. To quote a certain former WWE announcer, it was a slobberknocker of a week for sure that hit me in the solar plexus more times than I’d like to admit. WWE really did it up big this year for Wrestlemania 32. Not only did they put on several good shows, but they also broke records. There was over 101,000 people in attendance at AT&T Stadium for Wrestlemania 32, beating the previous record from Wrestlemania 3 by quite a bit. Not only that, ticket sales and merch sales were way up as well from previous years. It seems like WWE is growing exponentially with more and more fans tuning in every week. That’s a good thing. Instead of writing a recap of the entire weekend, I’ll give you some details of some of the cooler things I witnessed over the past week.

The name of the game was momentum in this week’s WWE Smackdown, which came to the WWE Universe straight out of Evansville, IN. It was also established that while friendships continue to be strong outside the ring, inside a WWE Championship match, there are only targets. Want to know what happened? Find out now!!

Jana’s Best of 2017!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jan 1st, 2018

Hey guys, Jana here,

I know these “Best of 2017” lists should technically be published in 2017, but why would I start 2018 any differently than I lived the majority of my adult life: Procrastinating and underachieving. What can I say? That’s my wheelhouse.

For a year that put a spotlight on some of the shittiest behavior by some of the Hollywood elite, it was actually a good year for TV and movies. I didn’t limit myself in number because as I moved on with the brackets, I felt like I was making ‘Sophie’s Choice‘ on some of these, so they’re all getting in! I’m feeling my inner-Oprah here, You’ve made the list! You made the list! EVERYBODY made the list!! In order to spare myself any arguments, I’m stating up front that my picks for the “Best of 2017” are not edited in regards to scandal or hideous human behavior.

4K UHD Review: ‘Dunkirk’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 19th, 2017

THE FILM

There’s never been a war film like ‘Dunkirk‘, which I’d say is a masterpiece in filmmaking, lead by Christopher Nolan (Inception, The Dark Knight Trilogy). Even though Dunkirk cost $150 million to make, you really wouldn’t know it, as it’s simplistic, yet grand view of the Battle and Evacuation of Dunkirk in 1940 is perfectly captured here. Dunkirk is why we still go to the movies. It’s one of the most intense movies I’ve ever seen and is one of the reasons to get out and see it in IMAX. Other war films try add sweeping music to add an emotional effect or certain camera angles to drum up more dramatic suspense.

Favorite Movie Scene of the Day #3!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 22nd, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

Annie Hall + Diane Keaton + khakis

I love Woody Allen movies and I imagine there will be quite a number of scenes in this column from his films. The first one comes from Annie Hall though. This scene just speaks to me so much and I think it’s a perfect capture of two people who were once in love, but still want to be in each other’s lives, even if it can be a bit awkward. Finding something to talk about to pass the uncomfortable time, or seeing new things in your former significant other’s place that make you question what new things they’re into now that you’re gone is delightfully funny to watch.

Top 10 Ryan Gosling Scenes in Movies!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 17th, 2017

Audrey E., here….

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 9.59.40 AM

Ryan Gosling is a true patron for the arts. Proof of this can not only be found in his selective partaking in films with telling characters, but also in his accomplished side projects. There’s his under-appreciated dark wave and gothic indie band, Dead Man’s Bones, and we can’t forget his courageous 2014 directorial debut in the fantasy drama, Lost River. He’s come a long way from his humble beginnings as a Mouseketeer on The All New Mickey Mouse Club, and despite the pressure from Hollywood to keep up appearances, Ryan concentrates on staying true to himself and what matters most: his art. Today I’ve put together a list of my Top 10 favorite Ryan Gosling performances in film and why this talented Canadian, a true 21st century James Dean, is more than meets the eye.

Film Review: ‘The Lure’!

In a mermaid tale more aligned with Hans Christian Anderson’s Little Mermaid than the less bleak Disney version, The Lure combines fairytale, horror, new wave/disco musical, and love story into a frenzied 90 minutes that still pulls off some poignant, quiet moments. Filmed in Poland, it is short film director Agnieszka Smoczynska’s first feature length project, and it is a promising effort.

Hey guys, Jana here,

twilightzone-the-twilight-zone-oscars-jpeg-29279

Lately, there has been a rash of remakes  of our favorite television series being adapted to feature films, but not too many that are simply re-making a TV series as another TV series. One that is doing that in recent memory is ‘Star Trek‘. CBS is planning to give us another incarnation of that beloved franchise that began in 1966 and has occasionally sprouted a new series while clinging to the rules and locations of the past. As of today, ‘Star Trek‘ isn’t alone, for this another show that will join it in this whole remake genre – ‘The Twilight Zone‘.

Film Review: ‘Demolition’!!

by Janet White on Apr 8th, 2016

Hello Everyone, Janet W. here…

Demolition - Davis During

Demolition, a comedic drama, begins with a man, Davis Mitchell (Jake Gyllenhaal), who loses his wife, Julia (Heather Lind), within the opening scenes. When I initially was given this assignment, I wondered, “How could a tragedy be made well into a comedy?” I will say that Jean-Marc Vallée held it together.   Read the rest of this entry »

Sicario is spanish for “hitman.” It’s laid out for you right when the movie starts. And from that point on, it’s a gripping and menacing thrill ride. Sicario starts with FBI agent Kate Macer (Emily Blunt, in another action role, SUPERBLY done) leading a raid in Arizona on a house owned by a cartel drug lord. She mistakenly discovers in a firefight inside the house bodies buried within the walls.

Film Review: ‘Two Days One Night’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 22nd, 2015

Paul N., Here…

two-days-one-night-cannes-2014-5

The phrase “train wreck” is tossed around a lot. People love to watch train wrecks in their many forms. This might explain the onslaught of reality television shows that permeate the airwaves. However, these shows are often short lived as people slowly learn the sad truth. The Hollywood version of a train wreck is a fun roller coaster ride with many ups and downs, often resulting in a happy ending. A realistic train wreck, however, is as disturbing to watch as one might expect. Directors who attempt to go down this path must navigate that precarious line to not delve too deep in that grim realism, and instead . Two Days, One Night is certainly not a train wreck of a movie, however, it suffers from a pretty blatant identity crisis due to its shallow glimpse into much deeper ideas.

Jana’s Best/Worst of 2014!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Dec 15th, 2014

It’s been a big year for the entertainment world. Netflix’s initial push to bring movie-theater worthy films straight to streaming customers and bypassing the big screen altogether set off a chain of deals that will take those fresh releases and push them directly into homes allowing us to bypass a $15.00 soda, but denying us the $20.00 popcorn you can only get at the theater. Then came the deluge of series and movies being made for exclusive run with everyone from Netflix, Amazon to Crackle and everything in between. Top that off with the huge breach of privacy Sony experienced. New releases were flooded onto P2P sharing sites and private emails from the film company’s big wigs that show us how the infrastructure of Sony really works, not to mention what those involved really think of some of their superstars.

I’m talking about the fun Haunted Houses that we all go to during the Halloween season. Nightcrawler opens with the moonshining down on the city of angels, we see a thief, Louis Bloom (Jake Gyllenhaal) in action.  He is cutting away chain-linked fence when a security guard spots him.  A bright light shines on the sunken face and wiry form of Bloom.  (According to IMDB, Jake Gyllenhaal lost 20 lbs. for the role.)  The rent-a-cop asks for ID, but Bloom repeatedly diverts his requests with distracting comments and questions.  Bloom is a fast-talker.  Cut to bargaining with a scrap metal yard foreman in an attempt to sell the copper wire and chain-linked fence Bloom had collected.  The foreman doesn’t waive on his offer and resolve, but Bloom rapidly counters like a string of firecrackers pushing for better pay.  The foreman refuses to give Bloom a penny more than his offer.  What does Bloom do in response to this let down?  He asks for a job.  As plainly as he can, the foreman assures Bloom that he would never hire a thief.  Scraping to make ends meet and living in squalor, Bloom is desperate for a fast track to success.

Everyone remember the hype surrounding the new prequel series ‘Gotham‘? We’ve been inundated with teasers, internet ads, and just in general talking about how awesome, or un-awesome (is that a word?) it’s going to be. I want to be hopeful, because I’m a huge fan of the bat. Love the world of Gotham City and it’s dark, iniquitous, sullen tones. I’ve always loved the Tim Burton version of the Batman films, don’t get me wrong, Nolan’s flicks were excellent in that they gave me the action I crave. But I like how the first set of movies make him a real character and not either just a 40-pack a day smoker in a cowl, or an asshole.

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

THE FILM

You would think that by the look of ‘300: Rise of an Empire‘, the sequel to the 2006 hit film ’300′, director Zack Snyder had returned to make this film. Well, you’d be wrong as Noam Murro directed this, making this film his first feature film. But don’t worry, Snyder seemed to have a heavy hand and watchful eye over this film, as his handprints are all over this from his screenplay to the camerawork. It’s all here again in this prequel, side story, and sequel that features a lot of the same characters from the original. ’300′ cost $65 million to make back in 2006 and was largely made in front of a green screen. That film grossed over $457 million dollars.

Hello, Jana here,

Max+Brooks

Some people are riding a wave behind their parents’ fame having little to no reason to be known on their own. There are some people, like Joe Hill that use a different name so they are judged solely on their own work and not that of a well-known parent, in this case, Stephen King. There is another kind that does not change their name, but doesn’t go around waving their parents’ names around that seek success on their own. Max Brooks is in that category. Most people hear his name and immediately think ‘World War Z‘ or the book ‘Zombie Survival Guide‘. The fact that he’s the son of the fantastic and hilarious actors and filmmaker Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft is not used to elevate his success.

Hello, Jana here,

MICHAEL-JACKSON-michael-jackson-10317030-1082-1263

Most of the time, when a singer dies, their new material releases screech to a halt. Granted, this isn’t always the case. Look at The Beatles and their song, ‘Real Love‘, it was released in 1996 (which just happens to be the year I graduated high school). John Lennon died in 1980, so it can be safely assumed he wasn’t in a recording studio with the other Beatles hammering out new tunes. Musicians have hours and hours of recordings of songs in various level of completion. It may be a first sing-through, something they’ve worked on but can’t get just right, or something that is nicely polished and they just don’t have room on a current album for the extra track. Releasing songs that have been previously recorded but not released can be a bit of closure for producers that worked with the act, for band mates and ultimately for fans.

Film Review: ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 13th, 2014

Hi, Bryan Here…

grandbudapesthotel-2

There are so many filmmakers out there that have given us amazing and iconic movies. From  Steven Spielberg to Stanley Kubrick and from John Hughes to Danny Boyle, we have laughed, cried, and felt every perk on the emotion scale while watching movies through the years. However, some of our favorite filmmakers have lost their creative eye and ability to make quality films, while their movies earlier in their career won Oscars and pushed these directors to super stardom, but later in their career, their films have us questioning their talent while their films are met with very negative reviews across the board. It’s truly a sad day when this happens, and unfortunately it happens more often then I’d like to admit.

Ben K., Here….

I love Pompeii. It’s a fascinating place where the past comes to life; where all one imagines of the Roman Empire is made tangible. It’s amazing to walk through ancient homes surrounded by frescoes, mosaics, restaurants, a bathhouse, a grand theater…and one need only look upward to see the cause of both Pompeii’s destruction and preservation. That vast, once fearsome volcano. Still, it is worth but a glance; the city and her ghosts will forever remain the focus of Pompeii. In his latest film, Paul W.S. Anderson gives us the opposite: a cursory glance at the people and the detailed wrath of top-billed Mount Vesuvius.

Disney Preps Live-Action Cruella de Vil Film !!!

If Hollywood teaches us anything lately it’s that evil sells. Think of Disney, alone. You will be hard pressed to find any of their cash cow cartoons without an utterly evil antagonist. Which I love. It seems like you take the scary, evil guy in any horror movie and stack them against Dr. Facilier from ‘Princess and the Frog‘, or Maleficent from ‘Sleeping Beauty‘, and my favorite, although he’s far less scary – Captain Hook from ‘Peter Pan‘. I repeat. Evil sells. Every major motion picture studio and every 3rd grader with dreams of being a film maker know this, too.

Ang Lee’s vision of Yann Martel’s 2001 novel, ‘Life of Pi’ is one of the most visually beautiful films I have seen in a long time. If this film was made back when the book came out, which was over ten years ago, the movie would not have been as beautiful as it was today, due to the technology advancements we’ve had in just ten short years.  ’Life of Pi’ is one of the better 3D productions I have seen and if you choose to see this movie, see it in 3D.  ’Life of Pi’ will appeal to all audiences and you will find yourself falling in love with Pi and a majestic Bengal tiger, even if ’Life of Pi’ is good for only one or two viewings.

Australian director Wayne Blair makes his feature film debut with a little gem of a film in “The Sapphires.”  (see what I did there?)  The themes of the film are not really new to American audiences.  This is a musical-ish film about a traveling group of female aborigines Australians who realize their dream of performing in front of huge crowds, except that these huge crowds are American soldiers in Vietnam in 1968.  With this backdrop of a war torn country, we are exposed to the ideas of following your dreams, finding love, and living through the racial turmoil that was so prevalent during this time.

Hey there, little rock n’ roll devils, Napkin Art here…

Alright, so I realize I’m a few days behind on talking about the Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds show from March 14th, but hell, I’m still reeling from how awesome the experience was. Needed a few extra days to process it all.

As anticipated, Australia’s dark and lovely darlings, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, hit up SMU’s McFarlin Auditorium in support of their 15th album release, Push The Sky Away, with guns, fists and instruments blazing, like it was a real gunfight at the OK Coral. No eardrum or blackened soul was spared during the two hour set. Read the rest of this entry »

Good Morning ‘Walking Dead‘ fanatics!!!! I know you were on the edge of your seat like I was last night so lets get to it.  The show starts out with a flashback scene between Michonne and Andrea the previous winter. The camera starts with the chain that is holding Michonne’s armless and toothless walkers. They are in the woods and around a camp fire, warming up food. Andrea is warming up the food while Michonne is checking out the perimeter.  They are chit chatting around the fire and Andrea brings up the fact that Michonne never told her where the walkers came from.

I’ve been eagerly awaiting the sequel to ‘Kick-Ass‘ since when I watched the end credits for the first time of the original film. Aaron Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse all will return for the sequel along with Jim Carrey. Jeff Wadlow, who directed ‘Cry Wolf‘ is directing this venture, which I hope is as good as the first one.

The-Walking-Dead-Season-3-11

Hello  ‘Walking Dead‘ fans!! I hope you are as pumped about last night’s episode like I was. Let’s get straight to it.  Rick is checking the parameter of the prison. He looks at and sees Michonne getting out of a prison bus. He pans around and sees Ghost Lori again, this time but the graves. He runs down from his post to go see her. As he comes upon the grave, she disappears and reappears outside the gate. He runs, unlocks the gates, and runs up to her on a small bridge, by a stream, right outside the prison gate. Ghost Lori puts her hand on his face and he relaxes. Michonne witnesses the entire event with awe and confusion.

The-Lords-of-Salem

I cannot wait to see Rob Zombie return to original filmmaking with his ‘The Lords of Salem‘, which comes out April 26th.  Is it me, or are a few horror films coming out in April?  From Zombie’s Facebook page, he showcased some new movie stills from his upcoming horror film. This looks good and stars the usual cast from most of Zombie’s movies including his wife Sheri Moon Zombie, Ken Foree, and a few other surprises.

Movie Quotes

The Cable Guy:
Women are a labyrinth, my friend. Can I be frank? I don't think you listen to her. I think you tell her what she wants to hear. She wants you to thirst for knowledge about who she is, all the complicated splendor that is women. When your love is truly giving, it will come back to you ten fold.
Steven Kovacs:
You're right. That's incredibly insightful.
The Cable Guy:
I know. It was Jerry Springer's final thought on Friday's show.
