Film Review: ‘The Visit’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 9th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

the-visit-06

Finally, we have M. Night Shyamlan back in rare form with his new horror-comedy film ‘The Visit‘, which definitely doesn’t look like a Shyamalan movie at all. In fact, this is one of those “found footage” movies that rejuvenates this sub-genre of filmmaking once again. The world was introduced to M. Night Shyamalan back in 1999 with his hit film ‘The Sixth Sense‘, which quickly led the young director to superstardom as one of the coolest and imaginative directors of this modern era. Not only that, but he re-invented the “twist ending” again, which became a trademark of his down the road.

The Visit‘ is the newest film from writer/director/perfectionist M. Night Shyamalan and bows on September 11, 2015. The director has been more involved over-all with Visit since he took the time to edit the film himself thereby retaining total control of the project.  Read the rest of this entry »

Film Review: ‘Visitors’!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Mar 14th, 2014

Hello Jana here,

detail.baa7b437

I always assumed reviewing films would be an extremely awesome thing to do for a living. I never took into account that you won’t always enjoy what you review. I can watch documentaries, I actually prefer them at times. National Geographic and Smithsonian documentaries are great! I love history, current events and learning about new weapons or drugs that are problems now. I don’t even require things being in English to enjoy them. I can read subtitles and if the actors are good enough I don’t even have to rely on subtitles.

Hi Bryan Here….

So yes.  I chose to screen this movie.  Before I walked in, I expected an absolute 91 minute eye gouging debacle.  But to my surprise, it really wasn’t all that terrible.  I mean don’t get my wrong.  I do not ever want to see this again, but kids everywhere are going to love this movie.  And it won’t be a bore to the parents either.  ‘Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer’ works for kids.  They will enjoy it.

Cowdefender visits The Town (Review)

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 24th, 2010

Say what you will about Ben Affleck. I like the guy.  His previous film, “Gone Baby Gone” was actually really great as it was his first film he directed.  “The Town” is his second.  I look forward to more films out of Ben Affleck.  Perhaps a sequel to Phantoms??  I kid.  Here is a short review of” The Town” from Cowdefender.

The Town

Affleck’s newest film is bound to remove some of the hate for him him out there. As undeserved and overblown as I find that hate for the man, it exists and I don’t know how people can cling to it having seen this. The direction was very good, very polished. The pacing was excellent. For a movie like this, if it isn’t done right the movie sucks when people aren’t shooting. If it’s done really really poorly it’ll suck while they’re shooting, too. At no point does this flick suck. There’s tension in almost every scene due to what is established in the previews. Affleck was one of the guys that held the girl hostage and then he seems to pursue her romantically. In all of their interactions you wonder if he’ll do or say something that can screw things up, or if she’ll say something about the heist that he’ll find troubling, etc etc. Affleck’s character is complicated, too. Human. He’s selfish at times and (non plot spoiler alert) at one point he takes a crying baby out of the room of a motel and places it in the hallway.

The action sequences are excellent, well conceived, well executed, perfect audio, clever. It’s going to get compared to other movies because a crew is using assault rifles to rob people and they’re organized, but it feels like it’s own thing. A very fun ride.

Jana’s Best of 2017!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jan 1st, 2018

Hey guys, Jana here,

I know these “Best of 2017” lists should technically be published in 2017, but why would I start 2018 any differently than I lived the majority of my adult life: Procrastinating and underachieving. What can I say? That’s my wheelhouse.

For a year that put a spotlight on some of the shittiest behavior by some of the Hollywood elite, it was actually a good year for TV and movies. I didn’t limit myself in number because as I moved on with the brackets, I felt like I was making ‘Sophie’s Choice‘ on some of these, so they’re all getting in! I’m feeling my inner-Oprah here, You’ve made the list! You made the list! EVERYBODY made the list!! In order to spare myself any arguments, I’m stating up front that my picks for the “Best of 2017” are not edited in regards to scandal or hideous human behavior.

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

cb941c80-df09-11e6-8dc8-1fe8c8155e51_unbreakable-split

M. Night Shyamalan was the next greatest filmmaker in the world. With films like The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and Signs – the talented filmmaker was set to be the next Spielberg, Lucas, Scorsese, Hitchcock, and Gilliam combined into one person. It was working for him. Then, Shyamalan went on a “bender” and made a ton of shitty films, but I do believe this was a case of Hollywood taking control and not letting him do anything creative.

Writer director M. Night Shyamalan (‘The Sixth Sense‘) went from one of the most exciting directors to a cliche joke seemingly overnight after ‘The Village‘ and, especially, the floating turd that was ‘Lady in the Water‘. The man heralded as “the next Spielberg” has seen his stock rise in 2015 with ‘The Visit‘ and once again with ‘Split‘ which many put on par with ‘The Sixth Sense‘. It’s ‘Split‘ that is gathering attention today with the announcement from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment of it’s release to Blu-ray, DVD, Digital HD and On Demand.

Film Review: ‘SPLIT’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 18th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

M. Night Shyamalan has sure given us some wonderful and unforgettable films over the years. Somewhere along the way, Shyamalan lost his way as a filmmaker. So much so, that the studios would leave his name off all advertisements for the movie. It wasn’t until ‘The Visit‘ when Shyamalan came into the good graces of his fans again. Perhaps this is because he only had a very small budget to work with and got creative control without a ton of studio interference to do his own creative work. Now we have a new small budget film from Shyamalan called ‘Split‘, and is yet another step forward for the filmmaker in the third part of his career, which seems to drop the Spielberg aspect and go straight for the B-Movie genre.

Film Review: ‘Arrival’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 24th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

amyadamsarrival

Not to be confused with ‘The Arrival‘ with a young Charlie Sheen, although both of these films involve visitors from another planet, the simply titled ‘Arrival‘ takes the alien invasion genre into paths that we’ve never traveled down before. Directed by Denis Villeneuve (Enemy, Prisoners, Sicario), instead of giant cities falling to the ground and millions of people disintegrating into thin air by a laser beam, ‘Arrival‘ follows the path of two people who want to find a way to communicate with the new aliens that have seemed to land at twelve different locations on planet Earth. Set in present day, multiple giant alien spacecrafts land on Earth, where the governments around the globe put their best and brightest on the job to try and communicate with the new visitors.

Film Review: ‘No Escape’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 26th, 2015

Janet W., Here…

Screen Shot 2015-08-26 at 11.54.58 AM

No Escape opens in black with opening credits and the sound of insects chirping.  Suddenly we focus on two glasses of clear beverage.  The camera follows the waiter carrying the glasses through the hotel/mansion until they arrive at the security/food taster.  Upon receiving his approval the waiter continues to the Prime Minister of Thailand and his visitor.  You wonder if something is in the glasses and if the Prime Minister will meet his end.  They both drink and finish their meeting.  As the visitor is escorted out by security, suddenly alarms sound.  The security officer takes off for the Prime Minister.  He is found bloody and dead.  Rebels walk up to the security officer and he draws his blade.  To defend himself?  No, he slices his own throat.  Oh, right, this is a Weinstein film.  Cut to titles that transition into clouds and an airplane window.

‘E.T.’ Will Return To The Big Screen!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 10th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

That’s right, folks.  ‘E.T.’ will be on the big screen again, thanks to Turner Classic Movies and Fathom Events.  Screening will take place October 3rd at 7:00pm at select theaters across the country.  This marks the 30th anniversary of the film and most likely is geared to promote the new blu-ray coming out as well.  This was one of the first films I saw in the theater and it just blew my mind.  It was one of the first times my Dad and I bonded over a film.  Needless to say it holds a special place in my heart.  Not only will you get a newly remastered version of the film, but also a journey of the making of ‘E.T.’.  And yes, folks, this is this original film, not the version with the extra scenes or the CGI’d walkie-talkie replacements.  Spielberg acknowledged his fuck-up long ago and apologized.  The same can’t be said for Lucas.  I’m super excited about this and hope all of you can make it and take your kids to see this on the big screen.  Official press release below.

‘The Matrix’ is coming to 4K UHD!

I’m ready to go down the rabbit hole with Neo once again and learn Kung-Fu and take out robots. The 1999 sci-fi epic ‘The Matrix‘ is finally coming to 4K UHD on May 22nd. The new UHD transfer was supervised Bill Pope himself. The new transfer will come with HDR10 and Dolby Vision, which is just going to be glorious on every level. I can’t wait. Not only that, there will be a Dolby Atmos track, which I bet will be one of the best sounding discs on the market. There will be no new extras unfortunately, but most of the previous bonus features will be transferred over to this release, including the commentary tracks and more.

Film Review: ‘Ferdinand’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 13th, 2017

If you were to browse any children’s library, you would likely find a little red book with a stout bull on the cover. The Story of Ferdinand has found its way onto countless best of lists and even created controversy around its rebellious symbolism amidst its release in 1936. The new animated feature ‘Ferdinand‘ is no different in its progressiveness, and the film not only challenges the conventions of commonality, but includes heavy themes such as bullying, trophy sport and even meat packing plants. Director Carlos Saldanha has justifiably brought this gentle giant to life and has created a film that, just like its main character, is more than meets the eye.

4K UHD Review: ‘Kick-Ass’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 2nd, 2017

THE FILM

Back in 2008, Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. created a new comic book that was kick-ass, that they in fact named it ‘Kick-Ass‘. It was basically Spider-Man if Spider-Man had no superpowers and was had a hardcore R rating. The amount of creative energy, violence, comedy, and character development that went into the comic was magical as it was entertaining and wonderful. Millar just had a way with words and story plot that made this comic book called ‘Kick-Ass‘ solid gold. It was to nobody’s surprise that only two years later, we got a feature film directed by Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake, X-Men: First Class, Kingsman) and produced by Brad Pitt, that ignited a new breed of R rated superhero films.
