Hi everyone, Bryan here…

nattens-dæmoner-2-nonne

Yes, ‘The Conjuring 2‘ made it difficult to sleep for a few nights for me, and since I’ve seen that excellent sequel, I still get visions of one of the demons, which was a nun. It was truly terrifying. Well, just like ‘Annabelle‘ was a spinoff of the first ‘Conjuring‘ film, ‘The Nun‘ will be this sequel’s spinoff movie with James Wan and Peter Safran teaming up again to produce the film.

MV5BMjA4MTE2MDkyN15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNjk0MDkwOTE@._V1_SX1777_CR0,0,1777,999_AL_

If you can’t get enough stories based of the cases of Ed and Lorraine Warren, you’re not alone. New Line Cinema is giving us another film in ‘The Conjuring‘ franchise making this one number three. There’s no official word on what the third film will be about, but one thing we do know is that it will be based on another real-life case from the Warrens and their work as paranormal investigators.

Hey guys, Jana here,

maxresdefault

I don’t know about you, but ‘The Conjuring 2‘ had some serious scares in it, I didn’t have to sit on anyone’s lap through the film, like my daughter did, but it had some serious moments that tend to pop back up in the middle of the night when I’m having trouble sleeping. I’m thrilled to report there is another spinoff coming from the film called ‘The Crooked Man‘.

‘The Killing of a Sacred Deer’ is coming to Blu-ray!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 2nd, 2018

One of my favorite and Top movies of 2017 is coming to Blu-ray on January 23rd. Of course, I’m talking about ‘The Killing of a Sacred Deer‘ from director Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster). The film stars Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman, and Barry Keoghan. I have described this movie as a sibling to Stanley Kurbick’s film ‘Eyes Wide Shut‘, because of the glaring similarities. Not only is it similar, but it’s a damn good film that stays with you long after you watch it. There looks to be only one extra here and no 4K UHD release yet, but let’s hope that changes. I can’t wait to watch this again and  relive the awkwardness and suspenseful situations this movie delivers.

Blu-ray Review: Free Fire!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 17th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

THE FILM

Film Portion Reviewed by Janet White:

In typical 70s film fashion, Free Fire opens with an aerial scan of the city below.  Curvaceous, bold letters displayed nearly every cast member and some of the crew.  This got very old, long, and kept the pace slow.  Two men waiting in an alley… (Sounds like a bad joke, it was).  Stevo (Sam Riley) and Bernie (Enzo Cilenti) meet up with Justine (Brie Larson), Chris (Cillian Murphy), and Frances (Michael Smiley) for a shady gun buy with Ord (Armie Hammer), Vernon (Sharlto Copley), Martin (Babou Ceesay), Gordon (Noah Taylor), and Harry (Jack Reynor, how did they turn this hottie into a slob?).  Great cast, right?  Well, great casts alone do not a great film make.  The dialogue and plot points must harness and ride with that talent.

Film Review: ‘[Transformers: The Last Knight]’

by Janet White on Jun 28th, 2017

Hello Everyone, Janet W. here…

Transformers The Last Knight - Prime

Exploding onto our screens without regard for the narrative or progressive plot structure, comes Transformers: The Last Knight.  True Michael Bay lovers could care less or would even notice the story’s lack of cohesion with this sequel.  They are there for the cool special effects, radical cinematography, and rich hues that make up Michael Bay’s style.

Favorite Movie Scene of the Day #2!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 20th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

Car_rental

You’re going on vacation with the family or you’re trying to get home from a business trip and nothing seems to go right in the travel department. The flight is delayed, there are 300 people in line for security, not a single employee will help you, and the rent car you reserved is not even in the system. We all have our horror travel stories, some worse than others. In these situations, most of us keep our cool, grab a beer at the airport, and wait for it all to blow over. That being said, our inner monologue would tell a different story, in that we would love to just explode and tell off an employee who isn’t helping our situation at all.

Film Review: ‘[Free Fire]’!!

by Janet White on Apr 21st, 2017

Hello Everyone, Janet W. here…

Free Fire - Gun Gang

Inundated with morons and piss-poor shooting for a calamitous combination, Free Fire leaves the audience either shaking their heads or bowing over laughing.  Between the mumbling of lines and poor volume control, I missed bits of the dialogue for sure.  It is as if they were aiming to repeat what Tarantino did with Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs, but they were not clever enough.  Complete with wondrous never-ending bullet supplies and a villain’s miraculous ability to stave off death repeatedly aka “movie magic,” Free Fire simply does not make much sense.  Could a person, shot in their right arm, fire a weapon (even automatic rifles) with their right hand? Film Review: ‘Before I Fall’!!

by Janet White on Mar 3rd, 2017

Hello Everyone, Janet W. here…

Before I Fall - Party

Before I Fall, based on the novel written by Lauren Oliver, opens with an out of focus shot of Samantha Kingston (Zoey Deutch). Sam, as she is affectionately called, is for all intents and purposes, perfect.  She is pretty, dates the best looking jock, and is part of the top clique in the school. Four friends, Sam (Deutch), Lindsay (Halston Sage), Ally Harris (Cynthy Wu), and Elody (Medalion Rahimi), ruling the school, doing everything together, and partying hard are the ingredients of your typical high school drama. Next, the viewer is inundated with a montage of the people in her world beginning their days in different ways. Suddenly a dread comes over me, am I stuck watching a teenybopper film?  Read the rest of this entry »

‘Gotham City Sirens’ Will Rock Theaters Soon!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Dec 15th, 2016

Hey guys, Jana here,

GCS Cv1 var

Margot Robbie and director David Ayer are back together, the last time this happened, the world received ‘Suicide Squad‘. The next venture is even more of a daunting task, and that is ‘Gotham City Sirens‘. I’ll assume that not everyone eats, sleeps and breathes DC comics and I’ll slow it down. DC is the comic book world I prefer to live in, I like dark, deep, broody, melancholy atmospheres, and I’m not entirely certain the sun ever hits the center of Gotham City, but I’m ok with that. Marvel is too bright and flashy and, just not me.

Blu-ray Review: ‘The Conjuring 2’

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 12th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

THE FILM

It seems like a ton of horror movies come out every year, and most times, they don’t live up to their potential. There are a handful of horror movies over the last decade that really satisfy us horror fans. Films like ‘The Babadook‘, ‘It Follows‘, and ‘The Conjuring‘ will still be talked about for years to come. One name in the horror genre, or at least in recent years is James Wan. This man burst onto the scene with ‘Saw‘, which was basically genre changing and spawned a ton of sequels. Wan also made a few other horror films, all testing the bounds and pushing us into a new horror direction, while still respecting his influences.

Carol opens with the sounds of screeching train tracks during the title slides. Fade in straight to a close-up of a street vent while an instrumental score is played. Insurgent, the sequel to the popular young adult trilogy-turned-film-series, takes place immediately following the events of Divergent. Tris (Shailene Woodley) and Four (Theo James), are on the run from Jeanine (Kate Winslet), who is hunting the Divergents. This action/adventure/science fiction-thriller failed to perform, but was at least pretty to watch. Insurgent would be far more enjoyable if viewed on “mute”.

Jana’s Best/Worst of 2014!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Dec 15th, 2014

Hey guys, Jana here,

PicMonkey Collage

It’s been a big year for the entertainment world. Netflix’s initial push to bring movie-theater worthy films straight to streaming customers and bypassing the big screen altogether set off a chain of deals that will take those fresh releases and push them directly into homes allowing us to bypass a $15.00 soda, but denying us the $20.00 popcorn you can only get at the theater. Then came the deluge of series and movies being made for exclusive run with everyone from Netflix, Amazon to Crackle and everything in between. Top that off with the huge breach of privacy Sony experienced. New releases were flooded onto P2P sharing sites and private emails from the film company’s big wigs that show us how the infrastructure of Sony really works, not to mention what those involved really think of some of their superstars.

Legendary announced their plans to make a feature film based on the cinematic origins of King Kong during this year’s San Diego Comic Con. There have been King Kong stories that go so far back Faye Wray wouldn’t even be able to remember them all. It’s a story we’re all familiar with, but that doesn’t mean we will know what to expect from this film, especially when it’s based on the origins of the legendary, giant ape. Origin stories are really big right now and this one explores a topic we really haven’t been over inundated with. Everyone remember the hype surrounding the new prequel series ‘Gotham‘? We’ve been inundated with teasers, internet ads, and just in general talking about how awesome, or un-awesome (is that a word?) it’s going to be. I want to be hopeful, because I’m a huge fan of the bat. Love the world of Gotham City and it’s dark, iniquitous, sullen tones. I’ve always loved the Tim Burton version of the Batman films, don’t get me wrong, Nolan’s flicks were excellent in that they gave me the action I crave. But I like how the first set of movies make him a real character and not either just a 40-pack a day smoker in a cowl, or an asshole.

‘Ant-Man’ Begins Production and Fills Out Cast!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Aug 18th, 2014

Hey guys, Jana here,

Today marks the beginning of filming for Marvel’s ‘Ant-Man’. It has been a winding road getting to this point though. There has been a change in director and the loss of 3 cast-members due to scheduling issues because of delays. Some of us probably thought it would be a miracle of Marvel proportions if it were to ever make it to the big screen. Some of the reason for doubt stems from the fact that original director Edgar Wright had been working on bringing the 2D superhero to life since 2006 with very limited success.

Sequel to TMNT Announced!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Aug 11th, 2014

Hey everyone, Jana here,

Teenage_Mutant_Ninja_Turtletop

I get so sad for the future of American film some days. This film is a perfect case-in-point. First off, we had to know that once Michael Bay got his hands on the film rights to one of my childhood favorites, ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles‘, that regular rules of paying respect, homage, or even a gentle nod to their beginnings as a comic book was a long shot. I think the first warning of potential trouble had to come when we saw Bay was involved. Most people would think well, he’s just a producer and not going to direct and be such a vital part of the final product. Those people would be wrong.

The entertainment world goes through fads, just like fashion. One day we’re inundated with talking sea animals from every animated company, the next day it’s all about bugs. Right now, culinary genius is taking center stage.

The Weinstein Company began production today on ‘Adam Jones‘. This pic puts Bradley Cooper (‘Silver Linings Playbook‘) and Sienna Miller (‘GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra‘) together and adds a little spice making Cooper a bad-boy Michelin chef who has to change his ways. The project was originally called ‘The Chef‘ until  ‘Chef‘, Jon Favreau’s tale of a chef who loses his restaurant and hits to the road in a food truck piecing his life, and his family, back together along the way. Obviously this can’t work in the film industry an agreement was made and a change of title followed.

I fully expected Think Like a Man to be Tyler Perry’s He’s Just Not That Into Your Diary of a Mad Black Woman (I’m singing “Everyone’s a Little Bit Racist” to myself right now).  I was pleasantly surprised that, while this film certainly didn’t blaze any trails, it was entertaining, well acted, and all in all a fun night at the movies.

Hi, Bryan Here….

This looks just as bad as the first trailer we saw a couple of months ago.  Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t think Three Stooges humor really works anymore in this day in age.  I get what they are going for here, but it just falls flat and doesn’t come across as funny in any way.  And what’s sad, is I love all these actors and I even like the Farrelly Bros.   But I can definitely see this film winning all the Razzie awards this year.  Enjoy the trailer if you can.

Cowdefender Here,

I went in expecting a slightly above average comedy. I am a huge Bateman fan and I have no issues with anyone else in this film. It exceeded those medium expectations. It was fairly consistently funny throughout and didn’t feel horribly derivative at any point. They kept it almost entirely above base (most rated R comedies seem to need to throw in a wet far at some point).

Comic Book Spotlight – 11/13/10

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 13th, 2010

Drew here…

Between teaching science and preparing for a new baby to enter our family soon, this fall season has been incredibly busy for me.  My goal is to write weekly comic reviews, though it’s all I can do to keep up with the books on my pull list each week right now.  So in compromise, I will offer some weekly spotlights until I can get into a different routine.  It’s no secret that I love comic books and there are actually very few that I’ve ever truly despised.  I love every genre of the comic art form, and I’m always open to suggestions.  Here are a couple of books I’ve read this week that you might want to check out:
