4K UHD Review: ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 18th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

51mxxonme-l

THE FILM

Here we are with the final ‘Hunger Games‘ movie again, ‘Mockingjay’ Part II. With splitting the final chapter into two separate films, you’d think there’d be something worth waiting for or at least a big climax. None of that is found here with Part II, despite what anyone else tells you. I understand why the studio wanted to split the final film into two parts, which would garner double the money and profits off of one story, but in order to have a decent story and film, you need it to go somewhere. In this case, anywhere.

4K UHD Review: ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 15th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

51em8f0xcl

THE FILM

Things are not looking up for Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) in this third installment of Suzanne Collins‘ young adult book series ‘The Hunger Games‘. In an effort to squeeze as much money as they can, the movie studio decided to split the third and final book into two parts, much like the last two ‘Harry Potter‘ films and the recent trilogy of the single book of ‘The Hobbit‘. On one hand, the fans will get two movies. On the other hand, there will be a lot of filler between these two films to stretch them out to their two-hour run time.

4K UHD Review: ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 15th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

51cr14hes4l

THE FILM

This portion of the review was written by Suzanne Loranc.

Everyone can understand that the second movie in any series can be the problematic middle child of a franchise. They tend to suffer between the spellbinding beginning and the satisfying conclusion. However, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire rises above the usual awkward bridge label with excellent performances and a script that remains faithful to the book to make it a movie that could almost stand on its own.

4K UHD Review: ‘The Hunger Games’!

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

THE FILM

Have you read ‘Hunger Games’?  Do you know what ‘Hunger Games’ is about?  If not you’re in for a real treat.  ‘Hunger Games’ is based on a trilogy of novels by Suzanne Collins.  It’s geared towards young adults.  The premise is a whole lot like ‘Battle Royale’ where a group of young kids or teenagers are picked in a lottery system to battle each other in a designated area until there is only one survivor.

Hey guys, Jana here,

If anyone believed the final ‘Hunger Games‘ film was in theaters right now, I’d say you’re crazy and incredibly naive. Lionsgate is looking to stretch the product they have into millions of dollars they don’t. The books sold like gangbusters, the films have been out-the-door popular and the film company is not prepared to let this be the final property they see from the saga.

I had the distinct pleasure to sit down and discuss ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part II‘ with actors Wes Chatham and Evan Ross in Dallas, TX. They talk about working in the commando gear in actual sewers in Paris as well as auditioning for the role. We even find out some of their favorite scenes from movies. It was a lot of fun. Go see ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part II‘. Enjoy.

Hey guys, Jana here,

Final-Poster-Katniss-Mockingjay

It’s a fantastic time to be a movie fan! Marvel has almost overwhelmed us with film news and new trailers for their upcoming flicks. Almost. I won’t be the chick that gets tired of superhero movies. A superhero doesn’t have to live on the pages of Marvel or DC comics, either. Sometimes they present themselves in the pages of novels. This is what Katniss Everdeen did. We saw the injustice, heard the call of the Mockingjay and rallied to her side. Give us a villainous President Snow to rail against and we are all in!

Set against the backdrop of a post apocalypse-dystopian world comes the annual Hunger Games! We’ve read the books, watched the first 2 films, elevated Jennifer Lawrence to the new generations ‘It’ girl. She would be the perfect best friend, sister or girlfriend. As the breakout star, Lawrence has her pick of the projects she’s wanted to do, JLaw has shaken things up a bit with her choices, whether they challenged her as an actor, had a dream team she was dying to work with, or if it was just a story she read that she couldn’t wait to tell, fans have stayed close to their new heroine and ticket sales have proven that JLaw will bring the dollars.

SDCC may have come to an end, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t a few secrets still left in the movie world. Fans got the treat of seeing the first ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1‘ trailer that wasn’t made up of random Capitol propaganda. My heartstrings were pulled some as I saw the late Philip Seymour Hoffman as Plutarch Heavensbee talking to President Coin (Julianne Moore).

Your Katniss Everdeen fix is about to be sated! Get ready for the third film adaptation of Suzanne Collins‘ best selling books, ‘The Hunger Games‘.  ‘The Hunger Games‘ released for the first time on film in 2012. The film series then released part 2 or ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire‘ in 2013. The production company is following the massive success enjoyed by predecessors ‘Harry Potter‘ and ‘Twilight‘ by making the final book of the trilogy into a two-part movie. ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1‘ is due out this year.

Trailer Analysis – The Hunger Games

by Justin Cline on Nov 17th, 2011

Translating a book–especially a popular one–to the big screen is a tricky thing.  If you’re in need of confirmation on this, just look to the Harry Potter series, where the movies were just as often accused of getting it wrong as they were praised for getting it right.  Should the filmmakers be more concerned with producing a good movie or being slavishly reverent to the source material?  That’s a difficult question to answer.  For my money, the film must be able to stand on its own while not entirely disavowing the core of what made it popular in the first place.  The cast and crew must continuously walk a fine line between winning over a new audience and alienating the old one.

That having been said, let’s take a look at the most recent trailer for The Hunger Games. Read the rest of this entry »

Enjoy this Video from ‘Hunger Games: Mockingjay’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 25th, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

Mockingjay

Lionsgate sure has a handle on how to market their films and their new teaser trailer for ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1‘ is no different. Instead of the usual 30 second trailer that is filled with mostly text or footage from previous movies, we have a 1 minute and 12 second video from President Snow (Donald Sutherland) from the Capitol, spewing some evil propaganda. It seems straightforward, but as the camera pulls back from President Snow, someone is revealed, and it just got me all excited for this sequel. Fans will be screaming! Enjoy the short teaser trailer. The film opens November 21st, 2014, so we have a while.

4K UHD Review: ‘Thor: Ragnarok’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 26th, 2018

THE FILM

Thor is starring in his third stand-alone film called ‘Thor: Ragnarok‘ and brings a much needed change to the character in the best possibly way. Thor now has a fun personality and great comedic timing, mostly due to Chris Hemsworth amazing acting chops here. In addition to that, the film is steeped in a hypnotic, yet hyper-active color scheme that looks like Willy Wonka and Andy Warhol got together and decorated a city. In fact, Wonka’s theme ‘Pure Imagination’ is a song that plays in the film. It’s not all cold and stiff dialogue here anymore with brown or earth toned aliens and robots that Thor has to use his hammer to fight. Everyone and everything is covered in bright primary and pastel colors that creates a breath of fresh air in this stale universe. That’s all thanks to filmmaker Taika Waititi for giving his unique vision on this big budget film ($180 million). In previous Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, particularly with Thor, things have been sour and gloomy.

Film Review: ‘Tragedy Girls’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 24th, 2017

“Tragedy Girls fits best on a weeknight in October when you’ve already watched the good horror movies leading up to Halloween.”

Tragedy Girls is a movie that you probably don’t know about, haven’t seen ads for, and will have a tough time finding but if it comes on Netflix or Amazon Prime and you need to kill 90 minutes? You could do much worse. The film is a solid attempt at satire of high school, social media, and horror movies. It also contains some legitimately dark humor that really shocked me at first because I knew nothing about the film going in. I need to set the plot a bit in order to discuss the movie further.

Film Review: ‘Rebel in the Rye’!!

by Janet White on Oct 14th, 2017

Hello Everyone, Janet W. here…

The Catcher in the Rye took the U.S. by storm nearly from its initial printing. The author, J.D. Salinger, transformed from obscurity to magnified limelight causing him to retract from the world. The more the public wanted to know him or be his infamous character, Holden Caulfield, the more withdrawn Salinger became which increased the mystery. In the past 66 years, the novel has been printed, re-printed, translated and massively distributed throughout the world. Schools have both required and banned the reading for reasons of profanity and its message. Rebel in the Rye details Salinger’s (Nicholas Hoult) life and progression as a writer. From his early years as a willful, smart mouth to an obsessed literary giant. Read the rest of this entry »

Bringing a book to screen can be tricky, especially when fans feel such a strong connection to the characters. As a reviewer, I would be remiss to not mention that I was a huge fan of JoJo Moyes bestselling novel Me Before You and was excited, curious and a bit nervous to see how the book would translate to screen. I am happy to report that the film was everything I wanted it to be – perhaps this was a result of Moyes writing both.

It’s been a big year for the entertainment world. Netflix’s initial push to bring movie-theater worthy films straight to streaming customers and bypassing the big screen altogether set off a chain of deals that will take those fresh releases and push them directly into homes allowing us to bypass a $15.00 soda, but denying us the $20.00 popcorn you can only get at the theater. Then came the deluge of series and movies being made for exclusive run with everyone from Netflix, Amazon to Crackle and everything in between. Top that off with the huge breach of privacy Sony experienced. New releases were flooded onto P2P sharing sites and private emails from the film company’s big wigs that show us how the infrastructure of Sony really works, not to mention what those involved really think of some of their superstars.

Alan Ritchson Panel Q&A From Wizard World Comic Con!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Nov 12th, 2014

Hey guys, Jana here,

This should be the last article I have to write about the epic event that was Wizard World Comic Con in Tulsa, Oklahoma this last weekend. The entire event was so energetic and exciting! Cosplayers far and wide showing off their hard work, time and lots of money in their creative costumes. For all the little posers that call yourselves geeks because you wear glasses or have gone to see some superhero movies, you’re an absolute disgrace to the title and we reach a level of unconsentatneous, that is to say “disagreement”. If you’re a geek, then I have no terminology for what some of these fans should be called, then.  You might dress as Gandalf to go to a party, but I met a guy that made up his own wizard name and costume, complete with vine covered staff and stayed in costume ALL. DAMN. DAY. He’s in the food court holding his beard back while he eats nachos and the beautiful people walk by smirking while they wear some face paint, a character t-shirt  and their underwear. How in the world can one dressed up person poke fun at another one? I’ll tell you how, because the smirking people are just posers.

Sharlto Copley has been in back and forth negotiations to star in the series based on the graphic novel. Copley is an excellent actor and one of my favorite things about the ‘A-Team‘ movie in 2010. His turn as Murdock was so inspired and hilarious, I could watch him all day. I still make jokes about any food that tastes a little off as having been grilled by Murdock with his special sauce (antifreeze). Most recently he was seen in ‘Maleficent‘ as Stefan, there are two films in a post-production phase right now that are set to come out in 2015.

Sony Plans To Make Female-Driven Superhero Movie!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Aug 5th, 2014

Hey guys, Jana here,

It would seem the collective consensus thinks the film-watching world is ready for a female driven superhero movie. I’m not so sure about the idea. Sure, it’s a hot time for leading ladies, but we can’t forget the horrors of the past that quickly. Of course I’m talking about the two names most synonymous with crappy female superhero movie attempts – Halle Berry’sCatwoman‘ and ‘Elektra‘ starring Jennifer Garner. The films were poorly written and the leads were unable to connect the acting with the characters. Maybe it’s the Marvel blood in Berry’s excellent portrayal of Sue Storm in the ‘X-Men’ series that rejected the DC infusion. Regardless of the reasons, there were no attempts to create more (thank God).

Film Review: ‘Divergent’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 20th, 2014

Hi, Bryan Here…

DIVERGENT

Ok, I’ll admit it. My name is Bryan Kluger, and I’m a Young Adult Movie virgin. I’ve never seen a ‘Twilight‘ movie nor have I seen either of ‘The Hunger Games‘ yet. And to be perfectly honest, I have not yet read any of these books that the movies were based on. Part of it is that I never got around to it while another part was that these stories didn’t really interest me. With ‘Twilight‘, my personal preference is to have my monsters whether they be vampires or werewolves, go on a nightly bender, wreaking havoc and killing for blood, only to have a hero stop their evil thirst and put them in their place. They are not to have vampires who wear glitter and talk about their feelings for three hours. It just doesn’t make sense to me.

Terrence Howard Set To Star In ‘Empire’!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Feb 20th, 2014

Jana B. here,

Terrence Howard

Terrence Howard is one of the most hard-working and in-demand actors the film industry has to its credit. Right now, he has 8 projects that are in development. That doesn’t even include some of the powerhouse films he is just on the backside of like ‘Prisoners‘, and the award winning ‘Lee Daniels’ The Butler’.

And The Golden Globe Nominees Are….

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 12th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

1355416686-golden_globe_awards

Here are the nominees for the 2014 Golden Globe Awards. Wow, there were a lot of snubs here. And how did ‘Rush‘ make the list for Best Picture? No way! And what about ‘The Way Way Back‘, ‘Mud‘, or ‘Short Term 12‘ not being nominated? For shame. Let me know what you think of this nominee list?

Jana B., Here….

1368706104_fast-furious-6

Finally. I’m surprised it’s taken this long for there to be a spoof made from ‘The Fast and Furious‘.  The writer-director team of Aaron Seltzer and Jason Friedberg who have both brought us’Vampires Suck‘, (as if ‘Twilight‘ didn’t already show us that), and ‘Meet The Spartans‘. Personally, they ought to be grateful King Leonidas isn’t around to kick their arses all over the place for that one, but I digress. They’re sticking to the method they know best by filling the roles in ‘Superfast‘ with up-and-comers.

Hi, Bryan Here….

globes-drink

The Golden Globes were last night and Tina Fey and Amy Poehler killed it. They were amazing.  Even former president Bill Clinton showed up to talk about Spielberg’s ‘Lincoln‘.  Even though I really liked the film ‘Argo‘, I was shocked when it won best film and director for Ben Affleck. I was happy to see ‘Django Unchained‘ win for best supporting actor for Christoph Waltz and screenplay for Tarantino. If this is any pre-cursor to the Oscars, I’d be completely let down if ‘Argo‘ takes it all.  Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great film, but not the best film of the year.  I expect it to and want it to win the best adapted screenplay.  Just my opinion.  Below are the full results from last night’s show.

Bryan’s Top 20 Films of 2012!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 31st, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

I can’t believe that 2012 is at its end and we are about to welcome 2013.  This year has gone by so fast, and man, did I see tons of films.  When I started making this 2012 list, I came up with 87 films that I enjoyed.  Yes, you read that right, 87, meaning there were probably just as many films that I didn’t enjoy.  Now, below is my top 20 of the year. I just couldn’t do it with 10 this year.  And these are films that I watched in the theater or at home and that don’t necessarily come out this year, but I did see this year.  And I’m sure I’ll get a lot of criticism for my list, but hey this is my list, not yours.  You can have your own.  But my lists tend to be different than most people’s as you can tell from my previous lists HERE. So without any further delay, below is my TOP 20 films for 2012.

Hi, Bryan Here….

The nominations came in this morning and needless to say, I went into a fit of rage.  I mean I was so mad, I almost wrote a letter.  After going through the list of nominees, while some of the noms were well deserved, many were not, especially in the FILM categories.  There needs to be a serious uprooting process at the Golden Globes where everyone involved in voting needs to be replaced by others who know what they’re doing.

Bryan’s Review of ‘Looper’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 27th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here…..

Science Fiction is back in a big way.  With the recent ‘Prometheus’ film, ‘John Carter’, ‘MIB3’, and ‘The Hunger Games’, audiences are proving they are ready for a huge sci-fi kick in theaters.  Rian Johnson’s ‘Looper’ is one of the better sci-fi films to come out this year, if not the best so far.  ‘Looper’ is a highly entertaining thrill ride that combines time travel, telekinesis, and realistic future world.  I was very happy to see that Johnson got the sci-fi genre right, and it left me wanting more.

Hi, Bryan Here….

Amazon’s Prime Streaming Service just got a hell of a lot better.  It will be giving Netflix a run for its money.  EPIX signed a deal with Amazon that more than doubles Amazon’s streaming film catalogue.  This comes shortly after EPIX’s contract with Netflix expired.  Now films from Paramount, MGM, and Lionsgate will be available on Amazon’s Streaming service.  “We think customers will really enjoy watching new titles like The AvengersIron Man 2 and The Hunger Games on their Kindle Fire, PlayStation 3, Xbox, iPad or any of the other of the Amazon Instant Video compatible devices,” says Amazon VP Bill Carr. Epix CEO Mark Greenberg calls the deal “a great line extension” for Amazon.  Read the official press release below.

A ‘Battlestar Galactica’ Movie? No Fracking Way!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 9th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

Battlestar-Galactica

Mother-fracker! This is excellent news. “So say we all.” Universal is prepping a big screen adaptation of ‘Battlestar Galactica‘…finally. There have been many attempts to do a big screen version based off of Glen Larson’s 1978 TV series, but none have come to fruition. In 2003, a revamp series aired on SyFy, and became one of the BEST series to ever come out on television.

Film Review: ‘Divergent 3: Allegiant’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 17th, 2016

Beka P., Here…

thumbnail_23581

DISCLAIMER: I have not read any of the ‘Divergent‘ books, nor have I seen any of the previous movies in the ‘Divergent‘ series, although you could read our reviews HERE and HERE, but with me, you’ll have a fresh take on the series. So now that we’ve gotten that out of the way… let’s get to the point, which is that this movie was completely ridiculous. ‘Allegiant‘ is the third installment in this young adult series and only covers half of the third novel, so do not expect to get all your “allegiance” (yes, I went there) out with this one flick. So what can you expect? Boy, oh, Boy! You can expect heavy CGI, a pretty terrible script, about 25 minutes more ‘Allegiant‘ than necessary, unanswered questions, and some eye candy.

Hey guys, Jana here,

55ddcfcf8ebe221439ce60b2_lawrence-schumer

I can’t believe it’s happening, but Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Schumer seem to be more than just vacationing buddies, as of late, they’re writing partners! It even gets better than that, the project they’ve been tearing through is a vehicle that will put the goofy, hilarious duo together on-screen, as well, sisters at that! Is this a new incarnation of the Tina Fey/Amy Poehler dynamic?

WWE: NXT Takeover Revolution Review!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 12th, 2014

Angi S., Here…

NXT_REV_Photo_19-1489422147

It was a huge night for WWE’s developmental brand NXT. NXT Takeover: R Evolution, shown exclusively on the WWE Network (just $9.99 a month if the rumors are true) from Full Sail University in Orlando, FL, was everything a wrestling show should have and could have been. Four times a year,  the NXT Superstars are given the opportunity to showcase their talents live, and last night, they gave everything they had to entertain the fans. The pre show started with sad news as NXT Superstar, Corey Graves, announced his retirement from in ring competition. His reasons being medically based. Did that mean we would no longer see him, hell no, he also announced that he would be debuting that night as an NXT commentator! The energy of the evening was electric as the crowd took their seats and anxiously waited for the future to be showcased.

Film Review: ‘The Giver’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 14th, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

giver_a

Here we are with yet another Young Adult franchise that is based off a series of books. This time around, we have Phillip Noyce’s adaptation of Lois Lowry’s 1993 big selling book ‘The Giver‘. I can’t believe it’s been more than twenty years since that book came out. If you are unfamiliar with the story, don’t feel left out, for you have probably seen or heard this story a few times before. ‘The Giver‘ takes place in a man-mad Utopia of sorts where people are void of human emotion by choice and force, thus no violence or wars could happen again.

Philip Seymour Hoffman 1967-2014!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 2nd, 2014

Hi, Bryan Here….

Philip_Seymour_Hoffman_as_Brandt

I still can’t believe I am writing this article. I’m in complete shock. I am upset, angry, and confused. How can stuff like this still happen, especially to people who have a means to get better. Drugs and addiction is a terrible thing. A terrible-terrible thing. And eventually, they took the life of one of the greatest actors ever to grace the big screen. I hate to write that actor Philip Seymour Hoffman has passed away earlier this Sunday of a heroine drug overdose.

The CW will begin developing a project titled ‘Sick’ for a series, which will center around a world where teens are quarantined after a bizarre and new virus makes adults allergic to them and most likely forced to do battle.  It is described as a cross between ‘Contagion’ and ‘Hunger Games’, which we all know is just the pussy  version and all around terrible mock-up of ‘Battle Royale’

‘Captain America 2’ Set For April 2014!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Apr 5th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

Marvel announced today that the sequel to ‘Captain America’ will be released on April 4th, 2014.  This is an interesting move by Marvel since it will be airing in the spring rather than the summer when all the other big movies will be out.  Marvel hasn’t done this since 2004 with their ‘Punisher’ film.  But maybe with the success from ‘Hunger Games’ and ’21 Jump Street’.
