Dec/2017

Is this a dream? I’m dreaming, right? Quentin Tarantino is about to beam up to the ‘Star Trek‘ franchise and that’s not joke. Tarantino, who is a big fan of all films, came up with a ‘Star Trek‘ storyline for a new film and talked with JJ Abrams about it. Abrams liked it so much, because why wouldn’t he, and the two have started to assemble a writer’s room who will knock out a big script based on Tarantino’s idea.

In the words of George Takei…”OH MY”. Paramount is gearing up for the upcoming ‘Star Trek‘ film and celebrating ‘Star Trek’s‘ 50th Anniversary by putting up a Limited Edition Box Set of Blu-rays that will have 30 Blu-ray Discs with every movie up until now and TV show featuring the Original Crew. The big new get here is the newly remastered Animated Series, which came out right after the Original Series did. There is also a new Multi-Part Documentary detailing all of ‘Star Trek’s‘ Cinematic endeavors. The set will release on September 6, 2016. Most of the technical details have not been released yet, and there is no price yet, but I just hope it’s rather affordable. My guess is that it will be around $200. I hope I’m right or it’s less.

Bryan Fuller is a name known for such shows as ‘Hannibal‘ and ‘Pushing Daisies‘, but if you go a little further into Fuller’s past, you’ll find a sci-fi fan first and foremost. In fact, Fuller became a writer with the hopes of writing for Gene Roddenberry’s juggernaut that is the ‘Star Trek‘ universe. He achieved that goal and began his writing career writing for ‘Star Trek: Voyager‘ and ‘Star Trek: Deep Space Nine‘. Now he’s back where it all started, taking on the mantle of showrunner and co-creator of the new Trek series coming from CBS.

Hello, Jana here,

Nerds everywhere, prepare to be absolutely outraged!! Nerd 101 teaches us that ‘Star Wars‘ and ‘Star Trek‘ are two entirely separate factions that should never, never EVER be combined. The two are like ‘Ghostbusters‘ proton streams. What can we never do with proton streams? That’s right….cross them.  What we all feared has actually made it’s way into the script. JJ Abrams, with Disney, has announced today, there will be a small cameo in the upcoming ‘Star Wars Episode VII‘ that will feature Spock. I can’t believe the lunacy of this one either.  I’m really stunned. I even checked this for an April Fools Day joke and it seems it’s 100% legit.

As we all know, J.J. Abrams has directed the last two ‘Star Trek‘ films, but earlier this year, we reported that he was asked to direct the upcoming ‘Star Wars‘ sequels, which he happily accepted. That being said, he has no time to do another ‘Star Trek‘ film in the near future, as he will be busy making the ‘Star Wars’ films. And as of the last 48 hours, Disney has told Abrams that ‘Star Wars’ MUST be released in 2015, which is putting this ‘Star Wars‘ project in rush mode, due to Abrams taking over script duties.

FedMex Here…

It’s very difficult to give a review of “Star Trek: Into Darkness” without going into a ridiculous amount of spoilers, so I’ll just start by saying that it is a damn good film, executed brilliantly with enough originality to bring in even the most ignorant of the Star Trek universe, but also bringing familiar material that will make Trekkies go totally titillating for tribbles (hell yeah alliteration!)

After the critical and financial success of J.J. Abrams first installment of the Star Trek reboot, we have been caught in a cycle of anticipation and apprehension leading up to Star Trek Into Darkness. Could Abrams possibly pull off a movie as fantastic or would we be left thinking he was spent after the first? Would he continue to remain true to the geekfest of science talk that places Trek above Wars? Would we get tired of the lens flares? Yes, Yes, and no.

Film Review: ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 16th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

star_trek_into_darkness-HD

I must admit that when I walked into the the crowded theater yesterday to watch J.J. Abrams’ second journey into the Star Trek universe, I was a bit apprehensive and weary on how good it could be. Reason being, that there were no press screenings before the film was released. On the contrary, the actual press screening was one hour later than the regular screening for anyone to attend who bought tickets. Usually studios do this, because they know they have a terrible film on their hands and do not want negative reviews about their movie until the film is out. I thought of two reasons why Abrams woud do this. Either he really did have a crappy film on his hands or in true Abrams fashion, he kept tons of secrets and reveals throughout the picture wanted to keep all a secret until it was released.

News on Star Trek Sequel

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 13th, 2010

We are almost two years away from the Star Trek Sequel hitting theaters. I am not sure who will be directing the movie yet, but I know J.J. Abrams will be producing and the writers and actors will be back for the sequel.

In an SFX interview with  Abrams and the writers, they discussed somewhat of a possible story line and characters.  Here are a couple of excerpts.

Kurtzman: Starting at a premise of what you want to see and then working a story around it is not how we do it. You have to start with what is the right story. And that if you can say “That’s a story that Khan fits into”, that’s how you get to that. Not deciding on a menu list of items and then seeing if you can’t string them all together.”

“Orci: Introducing a new villain in the sequel is tempting because we now have this incredible new sandbox to play in. On the other hand, some fans really want to see Klingons and it’s hard not to listen to that. The trick is not to do something that’s been seen before just because you think it will be a short cut to likeability.”

Oh the possibilities.  Click HERE for the whole story.

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

A week or two ago, there was a disturbance in the force as Kathleen Kennedy, LucasFilm, and Disney fired their Star Wars IX director Colin Trevorrow. You can read about that HERE. Turns out, the studio execs couldn’t handle having a big creative force behind Star Wars. The search was on for another director. Were they gonna go with another indie filmmaker with good credentials or play it safe like they did when they replaced Miller and Lord with the capable Ron Howard?

Film Review: ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 18th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

share_1200x627

I can’t believe it’s finally here. Ten years since the last ‘Star Wars‘ movie, which was ‘Episode III‘ by George Lucas. In the decade that followed, we all thought we would never see another ‘Star Wars‘ feature film again, since Lucas himself destroyed and ruined the prequel trilogy and continued to alter the original trilogy to dried up mess of movies that are almost unrecognizable. Fortunately for every ‘Star Wars‘ fan in the world, he sold his production company that included the rights to ‘Star Wars‘ to Disney for a modest amount of $4 billion.

Hello, Jana here,

sw-poster-49

Star Wars fans have been a mixture of excited and perplexed over Episode VII’s announcement. It would be great for us if George Lucas was tapping into his galaxy once again to bring us the latest chapter. Alas, that’s not the case. Lucas sold rights over to Disney and retired to go back to making films in his garage. At least that’s what I remember from an article. At any rate, he’s not running the show this time around. Star Wars isn’t like, say, the James Bond movies, you can’t just change out the lead and let each director have a different version of 007’s world. Star Wars fans want conformity. We’ve grown to love this galaxy and demand that anyone else that touches it, love it as much as we do.

Say it isn’t so folks.  J.J. I’m so excited for this. Warner Bros. has partnered with HBO and is releasing the first ever 4K UHD with HDR and Dolby Atmos when it comes to television box sets. I’m of course talking about the highly acclaimed and beloved West World Season One. Yes, this marks the first time a television series will be released on the format and what better way than with this epic series from HBO. Expect it on November 7th of this year with all 10 episodes in glorious HDR 4K and Dolby Atmos sound. There will also be a ton of bonus features too, which are listed out below. I can’t wait, because this might be the BEST TV release of the year. Now we need to get Game of Thrones in 4K.

Hello Everyone, Janet W. here…

King Arthur - Trio

Forget every film about the story of King Arthur, because King Arthur: The Legend of the Sword has nearly nothing to do with them. Uther Pendragon (Eric Bana, Yum!) is still Arthur’s father and Igraine (Poppy Delevingne) is his mother, but there is an uncle thrown into the mix, Vortigern (Jude Law). I cannot recall the character in medieval tale (and I took a course on King Arthur in college). Anyway, Law played him pretty well. I will not give it away, but I do not think I have seen Law like this ever. Mordred is a sorcerer instead of the Arthur’s son from Morgaine Le Fay? Yes, this is King Arthur told in a novel method. Hi everyone, Bryan here….

the-oscars-thumbnail

The 89th Oscars were announced today. These are supposed to be the Best Achievements in Filmmaking on all levels. However, year after year, The Academy and “their infinite wisdom” choose to pick dull films that should never be nominated. In fact, I bet you could go through most of the Winners of each year and realize you only watched that film or performance once and never thought about it again. At least The Academy had a good bit of diversity this year, but other than that – these Oscar nominations are boring, dull, and made me go to sleep just watching the equally not-fun announcement telecast.

Is A Big Bang Theory Spinoff Prequel Series Coming???

by Red Zeppelbon on Nov 8th, 2016

Hey guys, Jana here,

It’s likely your friends fall into one of two categories – those who love ‘The Big Bang Theory‘ and those who hate TBBT. Granted, this show is not quite as polarizing as ‘Two and a Half Men‘, but I know there are some people I can hear rolling their eyes right now thinking of these shows. So this next bit of info will be exciting for some of you and could possibly make others’ eyes roll right out of their heads. Warner Bros. TV and CBS is looking into a prequel series in the works based on Sheldon Cooper before he shows up at Cal Tech in the current chapter of his life.

Film Review: ‘RATS’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 22nd, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

Morgan Spurlock is one of the coolest people on the planet. I know from experience, since I interviewed him a couple of years ago, where we talked about our love of horror movies, ‘Spinal Tap‘, Fangoria Magazine, Steve Martin, and ‘The Simpsons‘. Spurlock got his big break from making a documentary where he ate McDonald’s for every meal for 30 days. That documentary was called ‘Super Size Me‘, which tuned Spurlock into a superstar filmmaker. He’s made a ton of films and TV shows over the past several years, all of which are worth watching multiple times.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Captain America: Civil War’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 6th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

61GKKp2eMaL

THE FILM

The ‘Civil War‘ story line in the Marvel Universe is one of the better story lines in recent memory in all of Marvel. It pitted your favorite superheroes against each other and caused some real havoc, before taking on a much bigger enemy. The day has finally come when that comic book miniseries is put up on the big screen in a very large way with ‘Captain America: Civil War‘. This is the third ‘Captain America‘ movie, and a lot of you will wonder why this isn’t just an ‘Avengers 3’ film since most of the ‘Avengers’ show up here throughout the movie. You might be right, but in a big way, this is really Captain America’s movie that shows us just how Steve Rogers ticks.

Green Room‘ was my favorite film from 2015’s ‘Fantastic Fest‘. You don’t get much better than Patrick Stewart as a bad neo-nazi, trying to kill a punk rock band. Not only that, you have the ‘Blue Ruin‘ guys Jeremy Saulnier and Macon Blair on top of this film as well. It’s in theaters now, and I highly recommend you go and see it. Lionsgate has just announced the Blu-ray too, which will release on July 12th with some cool extras. Below is the information.

Film Review: ‘The Huntsman: Winter’s War’!!

by Janet White on Apr 23rd, 2016

Hello Everyone, Janet W. here…

Huntsman

Let’s say just say it…Snow White and the Huntsman was not well done. The Huntsman: Winter’s War is the hot and cold shell that envelops its predecessor.  It’s not perfect, but is action enjoyment coupled with corny sporadic humor.  Not to mention, Chris Hemsworth finally got his balls back.  I can tell you that.  Snow White and the Huntsman emasculated the action-packed hunk of man that is Hemsworth.  Though some believe that this story should not have been told, but I enjoyed the unveiling of the back-backstory.  The film could have been structured to be less predictable but sometimes you just have to sit back and enjoy a film for your base needs: adrenaline, fear, and desire.

Lately, there has been a rash of remakes  of our favorite television series being adapted to feature films, but not too many that are simply re-making a TV series as another TV series. One that is doing that in recent memory is ‘Star Trek‘. CBS is planning to give us another incarnation of that beloved franchise that began in 1966 and has occasionally sprouted a new series while clinging to the rules and locations of the past. As of today, ‘Star Trek‘ isn’t alone, for this another show that will join it in this whole remake genre – ‘The Twilight Zone‘.

There’s one hell of a cast and crew at work here for Disney’s ‘Tomorrowland‘, which is loosely based on the famous theme park at Disney resorts. Directed by Brad Bird (‘The Incredibles‘, ‘Ratatouille), produced by Damon Lindelof (‘Lost‘ and ‘Star Trek‘), and starring George ClooneyHugh Laurie, and Britt Robertson, ‘Tomorrowland‘ is a throwback to those old innovative Disney films full of adventure. I felt like a kid again through its two hour run time as I was watching each suspenseful and fun moment on the IMAX screen. galaxyquest

Was there a better spoof comedy in 1999 than ‘Galaxy Quest‘? I’m gonna go ahead and say there wasn’t and Quest was the greatest thing since ‘Spaceballs‘. As far as space spoofs go, it was killer and it helped that Tim Allen starred. In the 90’s I was addicted to ‘Home Improvement‘ and couldn’t get enough of the comedian. I actually read both of his books and watched every show in syndication so many times that I could quote them in my sleep. Top 10 Soundtracks We Want To See Released on Vinyl!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 13th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

say-anything

Many of you might already know that I love listening to movie soundtracks. I always have. Since I was a little tyke who could barely see over a counter, I was infatuated with movie scores and soundtracks, particularly the ‘E.T.‘ original motion picture score and the ‘Beverly Hill Cop‘ soundtrack. From there, my love and passion grew for all types of music. My parents had a pretty good record collection that included all three original ‘Star Wars’ albums, ‘The Wizard of Oz‘, and ‘Star Trek I and II’ to just name a few. Throughout the years, I now have a fun record collection that spans all genres of music from Frank Zappa to Rage Against the Machine, from R.L. Burnside to The Pixies, and so on. Along the way, digging through the dirty stacks of crates at local record shops and estate sales, I became hell bent on having one of the best Soundtrack collections. And over the past several years, I’ve been lucky enough to acquire some very sought after albums. But there are still so many soundtracks that have never found their way to vinyl, either commercially or ever really. So here is a list in the hopes that maybe Varèse Sarabande, Mondo, or Death Waltz will consider releasing these albums in the near future.

Film Review: ‘Cinderella’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 12th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

CINDERELLA

I’m not sure why Disney is hell-bent on remaking all of their classic animated films into live-action reboots, but that seems to be the case nowadays. With ‘Snow White and The Huntsman‘ to ‘Maleficent‘ and now with ‘Cinderella‘, Disney is banking on popular movie stars to re-energize their classic titles. The problem is that these are not any good. While there is probably a built in audience already and new generations are now getting to see these old tales, it might be financially viable to think about rebooting these franchises. But in order to do that, you must make something that is quality, which none of these are.

Comic Con: Dallas Fan Days 2015!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 9th, 2015

Hillary T., Here…

As a fangirl, I love comics and dressing up. I love being someone else for one day and let’s not lie, Comic Con is my mother ship. This weekend was no exception. I spent two days basking the glory and adoration that was formerly Sci-Fi Expo and is now Fan Days 2.0! It’s my family, and walking through the doors of the Irving Convention Center is always like being at home. It is very much like a space ship or the Sandcrawler from ‘Star Wars’, with its four levels, an over powering awning, and yet, when the parking attendant took mine and Taylor’s (lead camera) money, we were excited and ready to get out of the car and start mingling with everyone and see what Fan Days 2015 had to offer. I decided to go ahead and dress up, because hey, who doesn’t like it when press looks like someone else? My costume of choice? Totally obscure and amazing! I was ready to go as Special Agent Dale Cooper, from Twin Peaks. I even brought along a thermos of “Damn fine coffee,” and a bag of donuts. Dead Laura Palmer would be waiting for me at the convention, for sure!

Top 10 Horribly Cheesy Scenes in Otherwise Decent Movies!!

I am not claiming that all of the following movies are cinematic works of art. Some of these films might be considered mediocre at best. However, they do all have one thing in common; all of them suffer from having that one scene that takes audiences out of the moment and makes them groan in disbelief.  This list includes movies that were meant to be taken seriously. So over-the-top comedies and machismo action flicks will not be found as they are created with the intent of being ridiculous.

In the world of film, there are specific genres that stand out for me and one of those is war movies. I love different titles for a variety of reasons, the story, or even an actor, in this category there is one primary theme that ties each film together – heroes. Their outstanding courage is what gives us that lump in our throats and a swell of patriotic pride that causes us to lift these characters, real or imagined, to elevated heights. It takes a special kind of person to be a hero, I know I couldn’t do it, but I am eternally grateful for the men and women that take up that mantle and defend the lives and freedoms I hold so dearly.

Sometimes, when we watch movies (even bad ones), we look at the technology used and think to ourselves “man, I really need that in my life”. The following is a list of the ten most “give it to me now” technological advances from cinema. This does not mean that the following movies are good, but that the technology used in them is highly desirable. To avoid the list becoming too narrow in focus (like weapons only), or convoluted by tech from one franchise (like Star Trek), the following list has a range of tech from weapons to medical gadgets, each from a completely different movie or franchise.

Film Review: ‘Hector and the Search For Happiness’!!

You can’t help but love Simon Pegg. His roles in Edgar Wright’s Cornetto Trilogy ‘Shaun of The Dead‘, ‘Hot Fuzz‘, and ‘The World’s End‘ are legendary. His work on the recent ‘Star Trek‘ films, ‘Paul‘, and in the ‘Mission Impossible‘ films have been excellent and very comical. That aside, i love seeing Pegg work on dramatic films, because not only is he one of the best comedic actors around right now, but he is also one hell of a dramatic actor, and his new film ‘Hector and the Search for Happiness‘ highlights that.

Hi, Jana here,

I’ve taken a brief hiatus, but I’m back with some big news! We all know that James Cameron likes to make movies that have a universal appeal. That’s basically a nice way of saying he makes money-makers. If something makes Cameron money, he goes back to that well until it’s bone-dry. If he could have come up with a logical way to bring Jack and Rose back together for a ‘Titanic‘ sequel, he’d have done it. History got in the way of that one, though.

This is not a review; this is a plea.

As of this posting, the Rotten Tomatoes score for X-Men: Days of Future Past is holding strong at 92%. And while it would seem that a score that high indicates the filmmakers got nearly everything right—in as much as anyone ever can—, I’d like to offer up a few suggestions for the next film, tentatively titled X-Men: Apocalypse.

Comic Con. The word evokes a range of feelings from a vast diversity of people who come together to celebrate their passions and show their allegiances to their fandoms.  The ways to do this are many, be it through dressing up as their favorite character, meeting the actors and actresses who bring those characters to life, or expressing it in countless other ways, Dallas Comic Con of 2014 offered something for everyone.  Between the vendors offering one of a kind collectibles, getting one on one time with celebrity guests, the panels that brought like minds together, and the sense of camaraderie and belonging between the attendees, I was not disappointed in my first foray into the world of comic book conventions.

More Dallas Comic Con 2014 Coverage – The Event!!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 19th, 2014

Rebecca S. Here…

Dallas-Comic-Con-2014

This year’s Dallas Comic Con has come to a close and if you missed it- you missed a lot. The change to the larger venue effected everyone’s attitude toward the weekend. Having, almost, everything in the same area of one floor was a welcome change. The downfall here is that the site was so big and there was very little (read: no) signage to let people know where the different events were being held.

Movie Quotes

FBI Director James Womack:
What do you know about V.X. gas?
Dr. Stanley Goodspeed:
Liquid; failed pesticide; discovered by mistake in 1952. Uhh, actually, it's kind of like champagne that way. The Franciscan monks thought they were making white wine. Somehow the bottle carbonated. Voila, champagne, and uhh, then the whole thing...
FBI Director James Womack:
The gas, Dr. Goodspeed.
Dr. Stanley Goodspeed:
It's very, very horrible sir. It's one of those things we wish we could disinvent. This isn't a training exercise, is it?
