Bryan’s Top 20 Films of 2012!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 31st, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

I can’t believe that 2012 is at its end and we are about to welcome 2013.  This year has gone by so fast, and man, did I see tons of films.  When I started making this 2012 list, I came up with 87 films that I enjoyed.  Yes, you read that right, 87, meaning there were probably just as many films that I didn’t enjoy.  Now, below is my top 20 of the year. I just couldn’t do it with 10 this year.  And these are films that I watched in the theater or at home and that don’t necessarily come out this year, but I did see this year.  And I’m sure I’ll get a lot of criticism for my list, but hey this is my list, not yours.  You can have your own.  But my lists tend to be different than most people’s as you can tell from my previous lists HERE. So without any further delay, below is my TOP 20 films for 2012.

Film Review: mother!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 13th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

It’s been proven over the last two decades that filmmaker Darren Aronofsky makes movies his own way. He doesn’t bow down to Hollywood execs and never makes movies for the masses. Most people would fail with this tactic, but with Aronofsky, he wins awards and is met with critical acclaim. With films like Pi, Requiem for a Dream, Black Swan, and The Wrestler (I won’t mention Noah) – you can tell that Aronofsky doesn’t make tightly wrapped, happy movies with pretty little bows on them. I commend him for this, because he’s doing something that nobody else is doing.

The trailer for ‘USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage‘ has officially arrived and this is one of Nicolas Cage’s movies that I have been really excited about. We still don’t have a release date, but the clip shows one hell of a tense thriller that will be worth the wait. Starring Nicolas Cage (‘National Treasure‘), Tom Sizemore (‘Saving Private Ryan‘), Thomas Jane (‘The Mist‘) and Yutaka Takeuchi (‘Letters From Iwo Jima‘) and is directed by Mario Van Peebles (‘Red Sky‘).

Janet’s Review of ‘The Last Witch Hunter’!

Yeah, bring me some more Riddick…oh wait, this isn’t…

Don’t be fooled folks.  It may look like a duck, swim like a duck, and quack like a duck, but this is not Daffy.  I saw the poster as well and this is nothing like the popular cult film, Pitch Black or Chronicles of Riddick.  Clearly the studio is trying to cash in its popularity.

Hey guys, Jana here,

13-Hours-Book-Cover

As Americans there are moments that made time stand still for our country. The attacks on September 11, 2001 crippled our spirits with the biggest sucker punch in history, and the attack on the American diplomatic compound and the nearby CIA Annex in Benghazi, Libya on the 11th anniversary of that horrid event, ripped that scar wide open. Some may see a film based on the events of that fateful night as a crass money-maker, I see the film as a remembrance and a warning to the future to never let this happen again.

Hey guys, Jana here,

american-sniper-6

In the world of film, there are specific genres that stand out for me and one of those is war movies. I love different titles for a variety of reasons, the story, or even an actor, in this category there is one primary theme that ties each film together – heroes. Their outstanding courage is what gives us that lump in our throats and a swell of patriotic pride that causes us to lift these characters, real or imagined, to elevated heights. It takes a special kind of person to be a hero, I know I couldn’t do it, but I am eternally grateful for the men and women that take up that mantle and defend the lives and freedoms I hold so dearly.

Hey guys, Jana here,

benghazi_victims_for_site

There are directors that you want telling the heart-wrenchingly true stories based on fact. Spielberg was unflinchingly loyal to history when he made ‘Schindler’s List‘ and ‘Saving Private Ryan‘. Mel Gibson brought the history of William Wallace to life as he led the Scots in revolt against England in ‘Braveheart‘. Ridley Scott dove into the horrific tale of ‘Blackhawk Down‘ and pulled no punches with the details. ‘Act of Valor‘, ‘Zero Dark Thirty‘ and ‘Lone Survivor’ are all cut from the same cloth as the previously mentioned films. The memory and honor of the dead lives on through these fact-based projects. One name you won’t see at the top of my wish list to direct a piece like these is Michael Bay.

Top 10 List: The 10 Most American Movies!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 4th, 2014

It’s that time of year again. Time to celebrate the founding of this nation by eating excessively and purchasing enough fireworks to create man-sized craters in the pavement. In honor of this time, here’s a list of the most ‘Murican movies ever. This isn’t a list of patriotic movies (though some of these could be seen as patriotic), so you aren’t going to see Saving Private Ryan or other true patriotic movies on here. This list focuses on those things that make America into ‘Murica – extreme excess and over-the-top…well, everything! [Cue eagle screech]

Film Review: ‘Earth to Echo’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 2nd, 2014

Janet W., Here…

1402481334-0144-Earth-To-EchoUK-QuadAWFinal30-1024x768

Earth to Echo is a film that exhibits what it really means to be a friend.  Can distance or circumstance separate real friends?

In the spirit of amateur filmmaking (constant shaking and quick pans that make your head hurt and your stomach queasy), we see the world, or at least part of Nevada, through the eyes of three, middle school aged, close friends, and a mysterious watcher.  Munch (Reese Hartwig) is a hyper, brainiac/hypochondriac.  Alex (Teo Halm) is a foster child that is used to being left behind.  Tuck (Astro) is Mr. Storyteller who has a camera glued to him at all times.  Munch, Alex, and Tuck are faced with mass eviction of their neighborhood for the construction of a complex series of highways.

Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks Teaming Up Again!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Apr 22nd, 2014

Hello, Jana here,

09-steven-spielberg-tom-hanks-1

I’m like any other film-lover and I have favorite directors that I will religiously watch anything they turn out. I love the films of Joss Whedon, Cameron Crowe, Quentin Tarantino and Steven Spielberg among others. Spielberg took a bite out of fame with one of my absolute favorite movies of all-time, ‘Jaws‘ in 1975. Yes, another thing I love is a pun, no matter how bad it can be. Spielberg has far too many epic films to count without devoting a whole article to the greatness that is Spielberg. Some of the highlights are ‘E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial‘, the ‘Indiana Jones‘ films, ‘Schindler’s List‘…and on and on and on.

Film Review: ‘Monuments Men’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 5th, 2014

Hi, Bryan Here…

monuments_men

George Clooney has had an amazing track record of films he has been in and directed. From ‘Good Night and Good Luck’ to ‘From Dusk Till Dawn‘, the brilliant man seems to know what he is doing. Clooney is also no stranger to war movies, as he has been involved in several different war films, but he has yet to direct one up until now with ‘Monuments Men‘. Sure, you can argue that ‘Monuments Men’ isn’t a “war film”, but rather more of an art heist movie, but I would argue against that.

Jana’s Best/Worst of 2014!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Dec 15th, 2014

Hey guys, Jana here,

PicMonkey Collage

It’s been a big year for the entertainment world. Netflix’s initial push to bring movie-theater worthy films straight to streaming customers and bypassing the big screen altogether set off a chain of deals that will take those fresh releases and push them directly into homes allowing us to bypass a $15.00 soda, but denying us the $20.00 popcorn you can only get at the theater. Then came the deluge of series and movies being made for exclusive run with everyone from Netflix, Amazon to Crackle and everything in between. Top that off with the huge breach of privacy Sony experienced. New releases were flooded onto P2P sharing sites and private emails from the film company’s big wigs that show us how the infrastructure of Sony really works, not to mention what those involved really think of some of their superstars.
