Film Review: ‘Bloodsucking Bastards’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 3rd, 2015

Fernando M., Here…

BSBEmmaFitzpatrickFranKranzJoeyKernIMG_2684

It’s sophomoric, juvenile, low budget, lacks any name recognition actors, but I dare say I had a good time watching it.

Blood Sucking Bastards is what happens when a comedy troupe gets together and says, “Hey, remember that great movie, Office Space?  What if it had vampires?”  Actually, I am 90% sure those were the exact words uttered to start this creative process.  As you can imagine, this kind of idea would only appeal to a very small percentage of the population.  Fortunately for that small percentage, this movie did get green-lit.

Texas Frightmare Weekend is billed as the Premier Southwest Horror Convention.  This year they celebrated their 10th anniversary and I was able to attend for the whole weekend for the first time.  Of course, I’ll be “penning” another article about the overall experience after I’m finished writing up everything else, but I must get this one out first.  The reason?   Because I LOVE movies.  A little known fact about the event is that they offer screening opportunities.  It is difficult to choose what to watch between the two rooms, but over the weekend I got to see enough to speculate on a few of them.  Oh, and there will be spoilers.

AMC has proven itself as an original programming giant with shows ‘Breaking Bad‘, ‘Mad Men‘ and ‘The Walking Dead‘. For all their success and accolades, the network still seems a little like a one trick pony. Where ‘Nurse Jackie‘, ‘Weeds‘, ‘United States of Tara‘ and ‘Californication‘ have some serious moments, they’re very much in the comedy range. AMC has yet to produce an original laugher.

Bryan Reviews ‘Queens of Country’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Apr 19th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

It is hard to think of a comparison for the movie ‘Queens of Country’ because, quite honestly, I’ve never seen anything like it.  Directors Ryan Page and Christopher Pomerenke may have just created the first of a new film genre, seamlessly weaving comedy, angst, campiness, desperation, musical numbers, and line dancing. It is rare to find a film that is so original and oddly amazing that it succeeds on all levels.  ‘Queens of Country’ breaks the rules of film and takes you on a hilarious journey of love, confusion, and music.

Film Review: ‘Roman J. Israel Esq.’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 27th, 2017

Roman J. Israel, Esq. won’t be a box office hit, and if you aren’t black or a lawyer or somewhere in that venn-diagram, you probably aren’t wanting to go see it. But you should. If you’ve ever had a forgotten dream, no matter what your profession is or the color of your skin, you will identify with Roman. It’s uncomfortable to watch, it’s heartbreaking at times, but there’s laughter and Denzel Washington. Denzel is superb.  And honestly, Collin Farrell has redeemed himself in my eyes from The Lobster, so there’s really no reason to cast this one aside.

It’s no secret that in recent years the Young Adult genre has exploded in popularity, most notably after the phenomenally successful Twilight novel produced box office gold with 2008’s film adaptation. At first glance, ‘Everything, Everything‘ might seem like another insufferable adolescent romance, but this one actually explores earnest issues and is surprisingly funny!  Read the rest of this entry »

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 11th, 2017

Dan M., here….

screen-shot-2017-01-11-at-11-31-05-am

FULL DISCLOSURE: I was born in Massachusetts (moved in middle school) love all the sports teams and have close to 40 families members in and around the outskirts of Boston. The only reason I disclose this is because I watched the news closely during this whole ordeal, read two books on the events/survivors, and caught the excellent HBO doc that premiered late last year. I’m not an expert on the event but I feel like I know a bit more than a casual viewer. Most importantly I wasn’t there. I don’t know anyone who was lost. I can’t imagine what it is like to see a tragic event in your life monetized into a film so I am reviewing this strictly as a fan of movies and how it was portrayed as a movie. The politics, timing, and ramifications of turning events like this into films are for others to debate.

Film Review: ‘Jack Reacher: Never Go Back’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 21st, 2016

Liz T., here…

jackreacher2

As I watched the latest installment in the film versions of Lee Child’s Jack Reacher novels, I couldn’t help but chuckle at the irony. Never Go Back took on a new meaning. Many fans of the novels were appalled and aghast when Tom Cruise, a visual polar opposite, was cast for the lead role. The initial film was not a box office hit and many were disappointed. Watching Director Edward Zwick’s attempt at the second movie, it is apparent that mistakes in the conversion from novel to film are so extreme that, sadly, there is no going back.

Jodie Foster has proven yet again that she is a force to be reckoned with both in front of and behind the camera with Money Monster, which stars George Clooney and Julia Roberts. In this case, the firm is IBIS, and Kyle Budwell (Jack O’Connell) refuses to accept that the loss of his life savings is due to a “computer glitch.” Budwell is determined to find out the truth and takes financial talk show host Lee Gates (Clooney) hostage in an attempt to get answers and discover the real story.

Film Review: ’10 Cloverfield Lane’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 10th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

Screen-Shot-2016-01-15-at-7.53.37-AM-620x400

Has it really been 8 years since we saw New York destroyed in ‘Cloverfield‘, which was the “found footage” film produced by J.J. Abrams about a giant monster in NYC. That film was highly secretive before it came out, and nobody really knew anything about it, but it did well at the box office and there was a lot of talk of a sequel for a number of years. A couple of years ago, things started popping up on sites that said “Untitled J.J. Abrams” project, and as of a couple of months ago, we got the first glimpse of a trailer called ‘10 Cloverfield Lane‘, produced by Abrams again and directed by first time feature director Dan Tratchenberg (Portal short). The studio and Abrams himself said that this was not a direct sequel to 2008’s ‘Cloverfield‘, but it was a blood relative or spiritual successor to it, because where do you really go from the end of ‘Cloverfield‘?

Janet W., Here…

Screen Shot 2015-08-26 at 11.54.58 AM

No Escape opens in black with opening credits and the sound of insects chirping.  Suddenly we focus on two glasses of clear beverage.  The camera follows the waiter carrying the glasses through the hotel/mansion until they arrive at the security/food taster.  Upon receiving his approval the waiter continues to the Prime Minister of Thailand and his visitor.  You wonder if something is in the glasses and if the Prime Minister will meet his end.  They both drink and finish their meeting.  As the visitor is escorted out by security, suddenly alarms sound.  The security officer takes off for the Prime Minister.  He is found bloody and dead.  Rebels walk up to the security officer and he draws his blade.  To defend himself?  No, he slices his own throat.  Oh, right, this is a Weinstein film.  Cut to titles that transition into clouds and an airplane window.

Ten Great Lesser-Known Films Starring Big Name Actors!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 7th, 2015

You might find yourself reading the following list, thinking “Hey! I’ve seen all these movies! How dare you claim them to be ‘lesser-known’!” My response to you, should you say such a thing, is “congratulations.” You see, just because you are a film nut like me, doesn’t mean that the rest of the populace is. The following is a list of ten good films with big-named actors that somehow slipped under the general radar. I’m not saying they are completely unknown, but based upon ticket sales, it certainly seems like they slipped the notice of the general public. These are all solid films that, should you enjoy these actors, you definitely want to check them out (the films, not the actors – although to each their own, I guess).

Film Review: ‘Me and Earl and the Dying Girl’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 18th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

me-earl-dying-girl-1

There are very few times in life where a movie affects you in such a way that you end up recalling the entire film from time to time in life. One of those films for me is ‘E.T.‘, as I saw the movie with my parents in theaters back in the early 80s when it was released. That film really struck a chord with me as it was the first time I really connected with a character and a film. It led to all the emotions pouring out of me, and still does to this day even when I watch it for the 1,134th time. Only a handful of movies have done that to me since then, one of them being this beautiful and charming movie, ‘Me and Earl and the Dying Girl‘.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: a troubled, angsty teen gets in trouble and is sent off to live with their dad in middle-of-nowhere, USA. Once there, the teen develops an independent identity, meets a sparkly vampire, and Indian werewolf…ok, that last part might be inaccurate, but you get the idea. Bravetown doesn’t provide anything you haven’t seen in dozens of other movies, what sets it apart, however, is that it manages to rip off its predecessors in the most bland way possible.

Hello ladies! Look at your man, now back to me – whoops, sorry about that. As you know, it’s Valentine’s Day once again. And as this overly-commercialized excuse for a holiday rears its ugly head, we take a reflective look back at our lives and at the choices we’ve made concerning our relationships. Some of you will realize that maybe the gap-toothed ex-con biker named “Bubba” might not have been the best choice for a mate (“but he’s a real sweetheart once you get to know him!”). Unfortunately, now you’re “in like Flynn” with his whole clique, and before you know it, you’re drinking homemade moonshine with the rest of his recently released buddies in the middle of backwoods nowhere (if you hear banjos – run). That isn’t to say that everyone makes bad decisions. Some women seem to have a gift for finding the right people to surround themselves with – or have a real knack for how to handle the bad apples that come along – and that can make all the difference between a smooth sailing adventure and a total train wreck experience.

Jana’s Best/Worst of 2014!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Dec 15th, 2014

Hey guys, Jana here,

PicMonkey Collage

It’s been a big year for the entertainment world. Netflix’s initial push to bring movie-theater worthy films straight to streaming customers and bypassing the big screen altogether set off a chain of deals that will take those fresh releases and push them directly into homes allowing us to bypass a $15.00 soda, but denying us the $20.00 popcorn you can only get at the theater. Then came the deluge of series and movies being made for exclusive run with everyone from Netflix, Amazon to Crackle and everything in between. Top that off with the huge breach of privacy Sony experienced. New releases were flooded onto P2P sharing sites and private emails from the film company’s big wigs that show us how the infrastructure of Sony really works, not to mention what those involved really think of some of their superstars.

Film Review: ‘NightCrawler’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 29th, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

K72A3451d.tif

It’s very rare to me when a film stays with me for weeks on end. It’s been more than a month and I still can’t stop thinking about Dan Gilroy’s directorial debut ‘Nightcrawler‘. It’s a smooth yet very suspenseful thriller about a friendless sociopath who decides one day he is going to start a career in freelance TV new reporting, where we see him succeed as well as go to the metaphorical “dark side”. This sociopath is played by the impressive Jake Gyllenhaal who (to put lightly) has major psychological issues. We’ve seen him play something similar before in ‘Enemy‘ and ‘Donnie Darko‘, but here, he’s on a whole different level. It’s easy for me to say that Jake Gyllenhaal plays the most frightening character in film in the last decade.

The Marvel experience will cover over two acres of space and will feature quite a lot of rides, activities, attractions, and props.

Film Review: ‘ Cub’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 19th, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

aea596b58dac12e7f8c1d88b27ef79ad

Straight out of Belgium comes a little horror movie called ‘Welp‘, otherwise known as ‘Cub‘ here in North America. ‘Cub‘ is a true return to the horror-slasher genre. I’ve never seen a slasher movie so brutal before. Usually, we see some form of jerk-off teenagers who plan a weekend vacation to get stoned, have sex, and drink like fishes. Then some supernatural force usually comes back to life or out from hiding to off each victim one by one in some gruesome fashion.

Alright YouTubers, listen up! If you want to make a real, honest-to-God film with professional cameras, this opportunity is just for you! Legendary Entertainment has entered into a working relationship with YouTube that is an entirely new approach to the film making world. The duo are collaborating on ‘YouTube Space House of Horrors: A Legendary Halloween’. It’s getting into the fall, leaves MIGHT be falling from trees, if you’re in the mid-west like I am, leaves are dying off of heat exhaustion, but no matter how it happens, fall is approaching. Where you get fall, you get Halloween.

Film Review: Guardians of the Galaxy’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 30th, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

Guardians-of-the-Galaxy-Movie-Trailer-Pic

Since Marvel became their own movie studio back in 2008 with the first ‘Iron Man‘ movie, they have quickly become one of the most lucrative movie studios in Hollywood in less than ten years. With films like ‘Iron Man‘, ‘Thor‘, ‘Captain America‘, ‘Hulk‘, and the billion dollar blockbuster ‘The Avengers‘, you can see why so many people stand in line for hours on end to see the top visual effects, greatest actors, and the fun and thrilling story lines for their favorite superheroes. And of course we all know that Marvel is now famous for connecting each of their films with cameos of heroes from other movies and those exciting end credit sequences after each of their films.

Paramount is Remaking ‘Explorers’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 12th, 2014

Hi, Bryan Here…

explorers-kids

Yes, Paramount is remaking one of my favorite 80’s film, ‘Explorers‘. You know the one where a young Ethan Hawke, River Phoenix, and Jason Presson built a spaceship out of an old tilt-a-whirl carnival ride? Yes that one. It is still one of my favorite movies and is one of the big reasons I got into science, space and film. Everything about the movie spoke to me as a kid, and I wanted so desperately to build a spaceship after watching that film.

jasonVorheesFridaythe13thRemake

So yes. A couple of years ago they did in fact reboot ‘Friday the 13th‘. You’re not crazy. But we live in a day in age now where Hollywood is remaking remakes. It’s sad and pathetic. That being said, I will take any ‘Friday the 13th‘ movie that is new in the theater. What can I say, I’m a sucker for Jason Vorhees hacking up dumb teens, even in space.

Film Review: ‘Thor: The Dark World’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 7th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

Thor-2_2709663b

And we’re back with the first non-Iron-Man sequel in the Marvel universe with ‘Thor: The Dark World‘, with the entire cast back ready for more saving the universe and defeating evil. However, this time around, the sequel felt uneasy and a little bit off, as it dragged in the mid-section quite a bit, or when Tom Hiddleston’s Loki (Thor’s adopted brother) is not on screen. Sure, the main event is Thor himself (Chris Hemsworth), but he seems to take a back seat for most of the film, as the co-stars really drive this movie as Thor smashes his hammer from foe to foe.

Netflix In Talks For Third Season Of ‘House Of Cards’

Dealing with revenge is the Underwood’s (Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright) MO in ‘House of Cards‘, and I bet we’re going to expect more of the same if Netflix picks up the option for the show to continue after it’s second season. As the keynote speaker for Film Independent’s 9th annual confab, Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos stated, “Our intent is that the show keep going for sure, It was a 26-episode commitment. It was not our intent that it just run for two seasons, talks are in progress right now, so stay tuned.”

Film Review: ‘Man of Steel’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 12th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

man-of-steel-theme

Did we need another Superman origin story to grace our theaters just seven years after Bryan Singer’s attempt at ‘Superman Returns‘? While that particular film wasn’t so much a reboot as it was a sequel to the original ‘Superman 2‘, and its failure in its characters and story, maybe it was time to forget that ‘Superman Returns‘ existed and start from scratch. And with the super success of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy and Marvel’s Avenger’s films, DC and Warner Bros. might want to take the same road to a Justice League film starting with ‘Man of Steel‘.

Film Review: ‘After Earth’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 30th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

After-Earth-Movie-Trailer-photo

After Earth‘ has a ton of good things going for it. We have Will Smith who has the largest box office draw in the business right now and his son Jaden Smith who has proven he has decent acting chops and can secure a decent crowd. This film also has a post apocalyptic scenario in the sci-fi genre that takes place on different planets in the far off future. Did I mention that it also has aliens, spaceships, and cool weaponry too? This is a perfect recipe for a potential massive summer blockbuster that could make over $1 billion. Despite these seemingly cool aspects, ‘After Earth‘ comes up short and never fully delivers the movie it should be.

Film Review: ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 16th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

star_trek_into_darkness-HD

I must admit that when I walked into the the crowded theater yesterday to watch J.J. Abrams’ second journey into the Star Trek universe, I was a bit apprehensive and weary on how good it could be. Reason being, that there were no press screenings before the film was released. On the contrary, the actual press screening was one hour later than the regular screening for anyone to attend who bought tickets. Usually studios do this, because they know they have a terrible film on their hands and do not want negative reviews about their movie until the film is out. I thought of two reasons why Abrams woud do this. Either he really did have a crappy film on his hands or in true Abrams fashion, he kept tons of secrets and reveals throughout the picture wanted to keep all a secret until it was released.

Film Review: ‘Oblivion’

by Gumbercules9000 on Apr 19th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

oblivion-movie-poster-tom-cruise-joseph-kosinski-featured

It’s been a great couple of years for science fiction fans. The sci-fi genre has shown its big head again, and the masses have seem to be eating it all up.  No matter what your opinion on a particular sci-fi film of recent, you can’t deny that the genre is back with a vengeance. Films like ‘Looper’ brought the future and time travel aspects to a great level of entertainment, whereas ‘Cloud Atlas’ made us think and at times confused us as to what was going on. None the less, it was a giant spectacle on screen, much of like we have seen many times before.

Bryan Reviews ‘Battleship’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 18th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

I remember playing ‘Battleship’ as a kid. I remember it being a little like chess, requiring determination, logic, strategy, and a bit of fun.  Unfortunately, the film ‘Battleship’ has none of that.  It’s a complete calamity on all levels, with the exception of some incredible special effects.  FACT: ‘Battleship’ has a run time of 131 minutes.  That’s over two hours, folks.  In that span of over two hours (which I’ll never get back), the film failed in storytelling, action sequences, logic, and character development.  The whole film was laughable and made no sense at all.  It’s as if a third grader made the film.  And that’s sad, because I like director Peter Berg.  He’s done some really good stuff like, ‘The Rundown’ and ‘Very Bad Things’.  But with ‘Battleship’, he missed the mark by a good 100 feet.

BRIDGE – Chapter Fourteen

by Justin Cline on Mar 21st, 2012

CHAPTER FOURTEEN

As always, the duality that came from channeling Polly gave Bridge a headache.  Or, in this case, worsened the one he already had.  Most humans—himself included—had difficulty maintaining a single point of focus, much less two, but here he was.  And there he was as well.  On the physical plane, he was seated in a chair in his office, gazing into the eyes of a dead man.  At the same time, his body was also floating weightlessly in space, surrounded on all sides by tiny flickering lights, hovering like fireflies. BRIDGE – CHAPTER FOUR

by Justin Cline on Nov 16th, 2011

CHAPTER FOUR

Bridge was faced with a decision, a choice between two evils, neither of which was in his favor.  Should he stretch his light out to reveal what had become of his would-be client or draw the candle closer to inspect the ruins of his own gut?  In the end, the woman won out if only because he was still in a state of shock, and he knew he needed to take advantage of that fact before it wore off and the pain of what had happened to him set in. BRIDGE – Chapter Three

by Justin Cline on Nov 9th, 2011

CHAPTER THREE

“How did you hear about me?”

This was a standard question on Bridge’s part.  He asked it of every potential client, though maybe not for the reasons one might think.  It had nothing to do with growing his little one-room business.  If anything, he wanted fewer people knocking on his door and he needed to know how the ones who did knock were finding out about his services in the first place.

“Word of mouth,” the blonde answered. Read the rest of this entry »

Writer Seth Grahame- Smith known for his novel, Pride Prejudice and Zombies also wrote a novel called Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.  20th Century Fox has acquired the rights to make this into a film in which Seth has already written the screenplay.

Tim Burton will produce while Timur Bekmambetov (Night Watch/Wanted) will direct.

Pre production is already underway and the budget is right around $70 million dollars and will be in 3-D.

Fox did all they could to win this one, presenting a detailed pitch for the production, marketing and release of the picture. Beyond that, they one-upped other studios by putting on an elaborate presentation to impress the filmmakers: huge banners hung over the studio lot; parking spaces read “Parking for Vampire Hunters Only, Park at your own risk.”; bloody footprints led them to the meeting; silver bullets and bloody axes were placed around the offices; and so on.

Timur had to say this about the film:

“It is not a comedy at all – it is a very entertaining, epic history lesson for millions and millions of teenagers. If you remember Night Watch, it is maybe in the vein of that kind of movie. We are keeping the traditional look of Lincoln – the big hat and the beard. He has to be historically correct, but with a few special weapons.”

And here is Publisher’s Weekly mini review of the book:

“Seth Grahame-Smith inserts a grandiose and gratuitous struggle with vampires into Abraham Lincoln’s life. Lincoln learns at an early age that his mother was killed by a supernatural predator. This provokes his bloody but curiously undocumented lifelong vendetta against vampires and their slave-owning allies. The author’s decision to reduce slavery to a mere contrivance of the vampires is unfortunate bordering on repellent, but at least it does distract the reader from the central question of why the president never saw fit to inform the public of the supernatural menace.”

STAR WARS Coming to a theater near You in 3-D

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 29th, 2010

Will we get to see Han shoot first in this edition?  Will the Ewok song be at the end of Jedi?

My guess is NO.  Because George Lucas hates STAR WARS and its fans.

But we will be getting STAR WARS films in the theater again.  This time it will be in 3-D.

Hollywood Reporter sources indicate all six of the live-action “Star Wars” movies will hit cinemas in 3D, starting in roughly 18 months.

It is not all good news of course.

“The Phantom Menace” will be the first out of the gate in early 2012, according to the report. Then, if box office warrants, “Attack of the Clones” in early 2013, “Revenge of the Sith” in early 2014, “A New Hope” in 2015, “Empire Strikes Back” in 2016 and “Return of the Jedi” in 2017.

DAMN. Old I will be.

Supposedly the reason for the films being spaced out so far is that it takes that long to transfer the films into 3-D.

My opinion, is that they will milk it with dvd/bluray releases and new toys each year to make as much money as they can.

Your thoughts?

BLURAY/DVD Releases For the Last Week of September 2010

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 27th, 2010

Tons of releases this week including my favorite film of all time.  It seems that a few weeks go by with some “ok” releases then one week later oodles of BADASS releases come out, burning a giant hole in my wallet.  Well this is one of those weeks.  Like before, click on the link/picture to be whisked away to AMAZON where you can purchase the movie for a big discount.  Enjoy this week’s releases.

This was a hard film to catch in theaters because it was a very limited theatrical run. Remember that film a few years ago, “Open Water” about that couple that went snorkeling in the ocean and their tour boat left them in the middle of the ocean accidentally? Well, “Frozen” is a little bit like that. A few college kids go skiing for a weekend and take the chair lift up one last time right when the park closes. Midway up the ski lift and about 100 feet up in the air, the chair lift stops and the park closes for the entire week and does not open again until the weekend. Five days without food or water in freezing conditions. What would you do? Check this film out!

Special Features include:

Audio commentary with Writer/director Adam Green and actors Shawn Ashmore, Kevin Zegers and Emma Bell

A spin-off of 2008’s hugely successful Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Get Him to the Greek reunites Jonah Hill (Superbad), playing a low-ranking record-label employee, and Russell Brand (Despicable Me), the ultimate larger-than-life rock-star Aldous Snow. Also starring are Sean Combs (aka P. Diddy) in a devastatingly funny comic turn, Rose Byrne (“Damages”) and Elisabeth Moss (“Mad Men”), plus cameos from music and media stars including Pink, Christina Aguilera, Lars Ulrich, Pharrel, Meredith Viera, Billy Bush, Mario Lopez, Kurt F. Loder and Paul Krugman. This is as raunchy as “The Hangover” and as funny as Superbad.

Special Features include:

Gag Reel
Getting in Tune with the Greek
The Making Of “African Child”
Five complete music videos featuring Aldous Snow, Infant Sorrow, and Jackie Q

I really loved Iron Man 2. It was such a blast in the theater to see. The action was non-stop and the characters were even more developed which made me care amore about them. This is something that has been lacking in the comic book film adaptations. Seeing Iron Man and War Machine team up and kill bad guys was out of this world. Mickey Rourke did a phenomenal job as the villain “Whiplash”. This movie had it all for me, even the cool cameos of Thor, Hulk, Black Panther, and the awesome Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. I am looking forward to a 3rd film as well as the Avengers movie in a couple of years.

Special Features include:

Commentary by Jon Favreau
Creating Stark Expo
Practical Meets Digital
Four deleted and extended scenes with optional commentary by Jon Favreau

Finally. My favorite movie of all time. The 1933 version of King Kong. Actually I have two favorite movies. King Kong and Army of Darkness, but Army of Darkness has already been released in HD, but King Kong (1933) has not, until this week. What an epic movie this is. I love everything about this film. It is not so much an action adventure story but a love story. Pure and simple. “It was beauty killed the beast.” From that first moment that Kong sees Fay, he falls in love, but deep down he knows he will be doomed, for he cannot have anything so beautiful in life. But he protects her from everything and will stop at nothing to be with her, even if it means his own demise. This movie is a must own. i am so excited that this is finally out on BLURAY.

Special Features include:

Commentary by creature creator Ray Harryhausen and visual effects artist Ken Ralston, with archival sound bites from Merian C. Cooper and Fay Wray
I’m Kong: The Exploits of Merian C. Cooper (2005 TCM documentary)
The Making of Kong, Eighth Wonder of the World (7-part documentary)

I will see anything with David Bowie. Anything. Especially a David Bowie War Film. Now this is a criterion release which means it is the best release you can get. “In this captivating, exhilaratingly skewed World War II drama from Nagisa Oshima, David Bowie regally embodies the character Celliers, a high-ranking British officer interned by the Japanese as a POW. Music star Ryuichi Sakamoto (who also composed this film’s hypnotic score) plays the camp commander, who becomes obsessed with the mysterious blond major, while Tom Conti is British lieutenant colonel Mr. Lawrence, who tries to bridge the emotional and language divides between his captors and fellow prisoners. Also featuring actor-director Takeshi Kitano in his first dramatic role, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence is a multilayered, brutal, at times erotic tale of culture clash that was one of Oshima’s greatest successes.”

Special Features include:

•The Oshima Gang, an original making-of featurette
New video interviews with producer Jeremy Thomas, screenwriter Paul Mayersberg, actor Tom Conti, and actor-composer Ryuichi Sakamoto
Hasten Slowly, an hour-long documentary about author and adventurer Laurens van der Post, whose autobiographical novel is the basis for the film
Original theatrical trailer
A booklet featuring an essay by film writer Chuck Stephens and a 1983 interview with director Nagisa Oshima by Japanese film writer Tadao Sato

Rock & Rule stars Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, Cheap Trick and more in this animated classic rock movie. The movie is about Angel, a member of a punk rock band in the apocalyptic future, is kidnapped by Mok, a legendary super rocker. Obsessed with an evil experiment, Mok plans to use Angel’s voice to summon a demon from another dimension. The rest of the band follows Mok to Nuke York in an attempt to rescue her and then the ultimate battle of good vs. evil begins. Why would you say no to this movie? This will be watched with beer and friends at midnight.

Wow. Two releases in the same week with Iggy Pop. Add to that cast, Alice Cooper, Henry Rollins, and Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange) and vampires, and you got yourself “SUCK”. It is about a band’s bass player that becomes a vampire, down and out rock band, The Winners are launched into spotlight. Stalked by creepy producers, wild groupies and the legendary vampire hunter Eddie Van Helsing, The Winners soon find fame to be a fate worse than death. Doesn’t that sound AWESOME?

Special Features include:

Audio commentary
Making-of featurette
Music Video
Cast-and-crew interviews
Deleted scenes

Another one of those PG-13 animated superhero films. Ed Asner lends his voice talent to the cast which is always a plus. “After a spaceship splashes down in Gotham City Harbor, Batman and Superman encounter a mysterious Kryptonian with powers as great as those of the Man of Steel. The Kryptonian is soon revealed to be Kara, cousin of Superman, who takes her under his wing to educate her about the ways of Earth. However, the villainous Darkseid has other plans. Seeing an opportunity to finally defeat Superman, Darkseid abducts and gains control of Kara, utilizing the powerful Kryptonian to do his bidding. It’s up to Batman and Superman to save Kara, but they’ll have to take the fight to Darkseid within his hostile world – where unknown, deadly threats lurk around every corner, including a brainwashed Kryptonian able to match Superman blow-for-blow.”

Special Features include:

DC Showcase: Green Arrow (short film)
Sneak Peek at the Next DC Animated Movie

I am sure you have heard of ILM before or at least seen it in the credits for just about every movie made.  It is the amazing effects company started by Star Wars creator George Lucas 35 years ago.  It was started to create the effects for Star Wars and quickly became the premiere effects company in Hollywood and is virtually in every film in some form or another.

So the Encore movie channel will be airing a documentary in November about the ILM company.  It will be narrated by Tom Cruise and will feature interviews by major actors and directors.

The press release says:

ENCORE PAYS VISUAL TRIBUTE TO OSCAR®-WINNING VISUAL EFFECTS GIANT ILM IN CELEBRATION OF THEIR 35TH ANNIVERSARY WITH ORIGINAL DOCUMENTARY “INDUSTRIAL LIGHT & MAGIC: CREATING THE IMPOSSIBLE”

Tom Cruise Narrates Doc Premiering November 14, 2010
Marathon of Five ILM-Effects Films on Encore

Beverly Hills, CA., September 14, 2010 – Since its founding 35 years ago, Industrial Light & Magic has been the movie industry’s undisputed leader in groundbreaking visual effects, thrilling audiences and making hits into blockbusters. On Sunday, November 14 at 8:00 p.m. (et/pt), Encore presents an original documentary celebrating that legacy. “Industrial Light & Magic: Creating the Impossible” is directed by Academy Award® and Emmy® nominated director Leslie Iwerks and is narrated by Tom Cruise. Encore will also present five ILM-effects films starting at 2:00 p.m. with Jumanji, followed by Hook, Jurassic Park III, Twister and Starship Troopers.

The hour-long special has interviews with filmmakers George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard,  J.J. Abrams and Jon Favreau, actors Samuel L. Jackson and Robin Williams, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and John Lasseter, the chief  creative officer at Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios.  Film and television shows featured in the special include The Abyss, Avatar, Forrest Gump, Jumanji, Jurassic Park, Pirates of the Caribbean, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Robot Chicken, Star Trek (2009), Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Transformers, Twister, Young Sherlock Holmes and The War of the Worlds (2005), which starred narrator Cruise.

Leslie Iwerks’ documentary takes audiences behind the scenes at ILM with in depth interviews with some of the company’s top talent and showcases never before seen footage highlighting many of their pioneering milestones. From creating the first ever computer generated character in a feature film to the latest advancements in visual effects for film franchises like Transformers and Iron Man, ILM has created some of the most memorable movie moments in recent history.

Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) is a division of Lucasfilm Ltd. and was founded by George Lucas in 1975 to create the visual effects for his space epic Star Wars. The studio originated in Van Nuys, California but moved to San Rafael, California to work on The Empire Strikes Back and is now headquartered at the Letterman Digital Arts Center in the Presidio of San Francisco with a sister studio in Singapore.

ILM has worked on nearly 300 films in its 35 year history and has largely been the driving force behind the evolution of modern visual effects.  From the liquid metal man in Terminator 2: Judgment Day to the lifelike digital dinosaurs in Jurassic park, ILM has created some of the most iconic moments in cinematic history.

ILM has received 15 Best Visual Effects Oscars and 25 additional nominations. It has also received 23 Scientific and Technical Awards from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in recognition of the critical role the company’s advances in technology have played in the filmmaking process. ILM is also the only entertainment company to be recognized with the National Medal of Technology.

I just hope it is an depth look at the company and not a broad view of it.  I will be recording it.

True Lies TV Series Coming Soon

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 13th, 2010

The adventures of Harry and Helen Tasker are not over YET.  Since the epic James Cameron film “True Lies” came out in the 1990’s and made almost $400 million at the box office, the executives and James Cameron are ready to shop around the TV series for True Lies.

Rene Echevarria of “The 4400”, “Medium”, “Castle”, and “Star Trek Deep Space 9” fame will be the head show runner along with James Cameron producing.

It will be interesting to see who will be cast in the role.  Any suggestions?
