Film Review: ‘Tragedy Girls’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 24th, 2017

“Tragedy Girls fits best on a weeknight in October when you’ve already watched the good horror movies leading up to Halloween.”

Tragedy Girls is a movie that you probably don’t know about, haven’t seen ads for, and will have a tough time finding but if it comes on Netflix or Amazon Prime and you need to kill 90 minutes? You could do much worse. The film is a solid attempt at satire of high school, social media, and horror movies. It also contains some legitimately dark humor that really shocked me at first because I knew nothing about the film going in. I need to set the plot a bit in order to discuss the movie further.

Film Review: ‘[Girls Trip]’!!

by Janet White on Jul 22nd, 2017

Hello Everyone, Janet W. here…

We’ve seen this storyline before. Four friends come together, experience a separation, reconnect and hijinks abound. In Girls Trip, Ryan (Regina Hall), Lisa (Jada Pinkett Smith), Sasha (Queen Latifah), and Dina (Tiffany Haddish) met in college, became the Flossy Posse and were thick as thieves. Then life happened and disrupted their efforts to stay close. An opportune event, New Orleans’ Essence Festival, changes all of that…

Film Review: ‘The Girl on the Train’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 6th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

68fbb8f3-27e3-4a97-bda7-d9b8d2a05ee4

I can certainly see the appeal of Paula Hawkins’ first successful novel ‘The Girl on the Train‘, which was released in 2015, and was fast-tracked and optioned into a major motion picture by Universal Pictures to come out this weekend. It has some deeply dark and layered characters and tackles a range of emotions and vices from alcoholism, abuse, and even a murder. It’s a good story with a who-done-it angle that feels fresh and original. The problem here is that the film felt a bit rushed and lazy, which gave way to the very slow burn the film has and never quite stays on point with its many flashbacks and timing, often times showing the same scene several times. It just got tedious and redundant twenty minutes in and never stopped being overly dramatic with longing stares, tears, and silence.

Gilmore Girls (WB) Season 1, 2000-2001 Episode: Love and War and Snow Airdate: December 14, 2000 Shown from left: Alexis Bledel (as Rory Gilmore), Lauren Graham (as Lorelai Gilmore)

“I get no pleasure out of the prospect or the preparation. I’m covered in hives, I’ve showered four times, and for what? Some guy who doesn’t even have the brains to buy a Zagat so we don’t wind up in a restaurant that’s really just a front for a cocaine laundering ring?” The GEEK DEAL OF THE DAY is the Complete Series DVD set of ‘Gilmore Girls‘. This DVD set comes with a ton of bonus features, which you can see below. Unfortunately, this series is not on Blu-ray, and there are no plans for it to be released in high definition yet. Sure, the series is currently on Netflix, but it doesn’t have the xtras, and of course, at some point, it will leave Netflix. Point is, this set is so cheap right now, that it comes out to around $6.00 per season. You can’t beat that for one of the BEST shows on television. I’m a huge fan of the show and have watched it through several times. The characters are just so likable and the dialogue and writing are incredible. Take advantage of this AWESOME DVD set, because it won’t last long.

*** I know the price says $62.99 on here, but if you click it…you’ll see that it is actually $43.99. ***

Film Review: ‘Diary of a Teenage Girl’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 10th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

diary-of-a-teenage-girl-4

The Diary of A Teenage Girl‘ sounds like it’s a bubble gum pop movie with the latest MTV stars, void of any real emotion or reality, complete with the worst of music today. Fortunately for everyone involved, that’s not the case here with Marielle Heller’s great film, ‘The Diary of A Teenage Girl‘. This indie movie is just full of surprises as we get a graphic glimpse inside the life of one high-schooler’s sexual encounters over the course of about a year. Based on Phoebe Gloeckner’s graphic novel and set in 1970’s San Francisco, the first moment of the film has our main character Minnie (Bel Powley) narrate to us that she just had sex for the first time as she’s walking through the park.

THE FILM

Yet another ‘American Girl‘ film has been released under the name ‘Grace Stirs Up Success‘. If you’re unfamiliar with the ‘American Girl‘ franchise, you can read my previous hardcore action review of ‘Saige Paints the Sky‘. ‘American Girl‘ is basically a line of actual play dolls for girls ages 4-12. None of the films in this series have anything to do with a doll, but rather try and tell these young girls what life is really like on the outside once out of a federal prison, which brings us to ‘Grace Stirs Up Success‘.

The cliché that a person is never truly gone from this earth if they live on in your heart is played out beautifully in a really non-clichéd way in Me, Earl and The Dying Girl.  This film tackles a lot of topics in a seemingly effortless manner: death and dying, parent/child relationships, friendship, how to survive high school, self doubt, and growing up.

New ‘Lethal Weapon’ Sequel With New Stars!!!

This top story excited me like no other today as I’m a huge fan of both Mel Gibson AND the ‘Lethal Weapon‘ franchise. In 1998 director Richard Donner brought us the fourth sequel in the popular buddy-cop series starring Mel Gibson as Martin Riggs, the powder keg with a short fuse and deadly sharp-shooting skill and Danny Glover as Roger Murtaugh, the all-around family man that continually counts down the days to his retirement and worries about going off-book as a cop until shit gets serious then he gladly joins Riggs in tearing apart whatever ass-hat is at the center of the problem.

Walt Disney Pictures has selected the next story up for the live-action remake with ‘Mulan‘. This all-chick rock band is as badass as it gets in rock music. Not to mention the drummer’s name is Janet Weiss (you should get that reference). But we told you that they were releasing a new album soon, which is called ‘No Cities to Love‘, which will hit shelves on the 20th. Highly suggest you pick it up.

Set against the backdrop of a post apocalypse-dystopian world comes the annual Hunger Games! We’ve read the books, watched the first 2 films, elevated Jennifer Lawrence to the new generations ‘It’ girl. She would be the perfect best friend, sister or girlfriend. As the breakout star, Lawrence has her pick of the projects she’s wanted to do, JLaw has shaken things up a bit with her choices, whether they challenged her as an actor, had a dream team she was dying to work with, or if it was just a story she read that she couldn’t wait to tell, fans have stayed close to their new heroine and ticket sales have proven that JLaw will bring the dollars.

CBS Taking ‘Supergirl’ On for Series Commitment!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Sep 19th, 2014

Hey guys, Jana here,

CBS has fashioned a red cape for itself and jumping into the superhero world. Writers Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler have just hit a stroke of good luck by selling their version of ‘Supergirl‘ to the network. Working under the Berlanti Productions banner with Warner Bros. Television will be exec produced by Berlanti, Adler and Sarah Schechter. We’ve reported a few weeks ago that this was a proposed option, but it is now guaran-damn-teed. Color me happy.

Attention Batfans, Jana here,

I’m a bonafide Batfan from way back when Wonder Woman and Batgirl were on my knickers. This includes all things batty. Not like regular animal bats, because that would just be weird, or at the very least, awkward. If you call your pad the Batcave and you’re a Batman fan, all is well, if you call it the Batcave because it’s full of real bats, you might need to spend some time in Arkham Asylum. Don’t worry, it’s perfectly safe…er…well usually.

Supergirl Added To Stable Of TV Supes!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Sep 6th, 2014

Hey guys, Jana here,

Supergirl_Vol_6_14

If you think about superhero television shows, or if you’re like me, you think of the dreck that was ‘Lois and Clark‘, ‘Mutant X‘, or ‘The Tick‘?  If it’s not one of those shows, then it’s probably something equally abysmal. With the resurgence of super-powered peeps making such an excellent showing at the box office – because why would they be creating so frakking many of them if they weren’t making some serious coin? So it stands to reason that the small screen is looking for new hit projects in the same vein.

After working with his new band, 3rdEyeGirl, the fruits of their labors are going to be tangible in the form of ‘PlectrumElectrum‘, the new album that will drop on September 30. In a style of his own, Prince will release a new solo album the same day. The New York Film Festival is one of the highlights in the festival circuit. It’s an excellent place for a filmmaker to get a lot of exposure. Writer-Director Paul Thomas Anderson has landed the big centerpiece gala for the third time with ‘Inherent Vice‘, Anderson achieved the same trophy position with ‘Boogie Nights‘ and ‘Punch-Drunk Love‘. Many filmmakers use the festival circuit to promote new film and Anderson is no stranger to the scene. ‘The Master‘ was viewed only a handful of times in the US before it’s competition appearance at Venice in 2012 and ‘There Will Be Blood‘ world-premiered at Fantastic Fest in 2007.

Ever hear of two things that shouldn’t go together but end up working? A bit of chocolate in your homemade chili, Kevin Youkilis  as a Yankee, Catherine ZetaJones and Michael Douglas? OK, well maybe not them so much, anymore, but you get my point. ‘American Psycho‘ – the book by Bret Easton Ellis that made a 2000 movie with Christian Bale, evolved into a musical? Yup, you read that one right. Off-Broadway theater company, Second Stage is going to present the U.S. premiere. This has been discussed and debated, but ultimately it’s happened and coming to America next!

Hi, Jana here,

girlfriend_experience_ver3_xlg

Steven Soderbergh’s (‘Magic Mike‘, ‘Ocean’s Eleven‘, ‘Sex, Lies & Videotape‘) 2009 film ‘The Girlfriend Experience‘ that starred then-porn-star Sasha Grey and Chris Santos has inspired what will become ‘The Girlfriend Experience‘, a 13-part anthology series Starz has just greenlit. Soderbergh  will work with Philip Fleishman to executive produce the half-hour series which will explore the relationships of the most exclusive courtesans who provide their clients with far more than just sex. These high-price call girls deliver far more than just sex, they offer the girlfriend experience (GFE). Clients wanting a GFE can afford to pay for the prices the service demands. As you would expect, the GFE calls for a more emotional connection than just sexually. These women talk, and genuinely listen, to their clients.

There has been a lot of speculation recently about Steven Spielberg’s upcoming projects. Two of them will be for DreamWorks, and people have been curious as to which film he will tackle first. Hello Jana here,

downton-abbey-logo

Downton Abbey‘ has taken the TV series platform that Americans are familiar with, turned it on its ear, polished it to a British-shine and showed us what a witty, elegant and proper thing it could be. Unless you’ve been living in a cave, you know the premise. And  if you’ve been living in a cave, I’ll give you a rundown so you’re caught up. Lord Crawley sees his family heritage, especially the grand country home Downton Abbey, as his mission in life. The death of his heir aboard the Titanic means distant cousin Matthew Crawley, a Manchester lawyer, suddenly is next in line and accepts moving onto the vast estate with his even more modernist, socially engaged mother, who clashes with his lordship’s domineering, conservative mother, the dowager. Marrying off the daughters is another concern. Meanwhile, the butler presides over a staff which serves the family, but also lead most of their entire lives in the servants’ quarters, intriguing amongst themselves.

‘Gone Girl’ Writer to Pen ‘Utopia’ for HBO!!

David Fincher’s name is synonymous with a successful film franchise, and for using Brad Pitt in his work.  Films like ‘Fight Club‘, ‘Se7en‘, and ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button‘ have all been huge box office hits and when we hear Fincher’s name, we expect more of the same. After a successful TV debut with Netflix’sHouse of Cards‘, he is ready to take on another series, like ‘House of Cards’ it is a British remake, and will be aired on HBO. The drama series project is based on the Channel 4 series, ‘Utopia‘, created by Dennis Kelly and produced by Kudos. ‘Utopia‘ enjoys a successful following on Channel 4 and in January of 2013 was picked up for a second season to air later this year.

Seth MacFarlane’s new film has a trailer. His first feature film he directed was ‘Ted‘, and it scored big theatrically and on home-video. It was only a matter of time before the ‘Family Guy‘ creator and voice made his 2nd feature live-action film. ‘A Million Ways To Die in The West‘ synopsis is: Seth MacFarlane plays a hapless farmhand in the Old West who loses his girl (Amanda Seyfried) when he ducks out of a fight, only to be taught to shoot by the wife (Charlize Theron) of a gunfighter (Liam Neeson) in this Media Rights Capitol western comedy. This looks pretty funny, plus it has Neil Patrick Harris in it. The film is set to release May 30th. Enjoy the trailer.

The Golden Globes were last night and Tina Fey and Amy Poehler killed it. They were amazing.  Even former president Bill Clinton showed up to talk about Spielberg’s ‘Lincoln‘.  Even though I really liked the film ‘Argo‘, I was shocked when it won best film and director for Ben Affleck. I was happy to see ‘Django Unchained‘ win for best supporting actor for Christoph Waltz and screenplay for Tarantino. If this is any pre-cursor to the Oscars, I’d be completely let down if ‘Argo‘ takes it all.  Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great film, but not the best film of the year.  I expect it to and want it to win the best adapted screenplay.  Just my opinion.  Below are the full results from last night’s show.

The famous Looney Toon skunk is finally getting the recognition he deserves.  He is getting his own movie.

Warner Brothers is developing a film based on Pepé where he and the girl of his dreams, Penelope Pussycat, would be CG characters and everyone else would be real.

Mike Meyers will lend his voice as Pepe Le Pew.  No word yet on who will be Penelope Pussycat or who else will star in the film, but with a big name like Mike Myers, you can be sure that the stars will come rolling in.

It has been quite a while since the Looney Toons have been on the big screen.  I think the last time they were on it, was Looney Toons: Back in Action.  Which wasn’t that great of a movie.

It is an odd choice to revamp the Looney  Toons with this character rather than Bugs or Daffy, but if this movie does well, let’s hope we can look forward to an entire Looney Toon series of films.

Judd Apatow will be Making a New HBO Series

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 8th, 2010

Judd Apatow of “40 Year Old Virgin”, “Knocked Up”, and “Funny People” fame will be bringing a pilot episode for HBO. There is no name for this project yet.

Judd Apatow has not been involved with TV since the amazing high school and college shows “Freaks and Geeks” and “Undeclared”. “Freaks and Geeks” is in my top five tv shows of all time.

The show will come from 24 year old Lena Dunham who wrote, directed, and starred in the award winning film “Tiny Furniture”. It won top prize as SXSW festival this year. The movie will come to theaters in November.

The Village Voice said this about the movie: “Tiny Furniture earned the 23-year-old Dunham comparisons to Woody Allen. She’s a gifted comedienne, eager to plum her insecurities over her imperfect physical appearance for both poignancy and laughs—I’m not sure I’ve seen a film that so accurately and unblinkingly depict what it’s like to feel unattractive.”

Lena will write, produce, direct and star in the pilot episode. It will be “about the assorted humiliations and rare triumphs of a group of girls in their early 20’s,” according to Deadline.

The trailer for “Tiny Furniture” can be found HERE.

I am looking forward to this.

If you have never seen “Freaks and Geeks” then seriously pick up the one season series below.  You will re live your high school years.  It is one of the best tv shows ever to be broadcast.
