Film Review: ‘Venom’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 4th, 2018

Venom is the latest example of a movie trying to be too many things. I don’t know if we need to blame the writers, director, or studio tinkering but somehow this movie attempts to be everything to everyone and fails miserably. That isn’t to say its a bad time at the movies, I actually truly enjoyed some aspects of Venom. I think if the movie focused on trying to do one thing instead of a million it may have been one of the best comic book movies in years. Instead, as a whole, it should be launched into space.

WARNING: THIS REVIEW WILL HAVE SPOILERS

Dan Moran’s Review of ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 4th, 2018

Ant-Man & The Wasp is perfectly fine. Its ok. It is certainly a two hour movie in which things happen. I was entertained by things that happened in this movie, that I definitely saw, but I don’t think matter at all. I love Paul Rudd. Evangeline Lily as Wasp is delightful. Michael Pena steals every single scene he is in again. Michael Douglas certainly enjoys his paycheck. Walton Goggins is wasted, but my face lit up every time he spoke. This is without a doubt the best cast of all the solo Marvel films. The problem with the movie is that it was released at the worst possible time to get anyone to care about it.

On February 19th, a total of 55 AMC Theaters across the nation will show the Oscar nominated and award winning film ‘GET OUT’ for FREE! You can see the list of theaters down below by clicking the link. ‘GET OUT’ is one of the best films of 2017 and I’m so happy they are showing it for free next week. Who would have predicted that one half of the ‘Key and Peele’ show would direct a movie that would be talked about and remembered for many years to come. It’s half horror and half comedy with an excellent satire behind it all.

Jana’s Best of 2017!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jan 1st, 2018

Hey guys, Jana here,

I know these “Best of 2017” lists should technically be published in 2017, but why would I start 2018 any differently than I lived the majority of my adult life: Procrastinating and underachieving. What can I say? That’s my wheelhouse.

For a year that put a spotlight on some of the shittiest behavior by some of the Hollywood elite, it was actually a good year for TV and movies. I didn’t limit myself in number because as I moved on with the brackets, I felt like I was making ‘Sophie’s Choice‘ on some of these, so they’re all getting in! I’m feeling my inner-Oprah here, You’ve made the list! You made the list! EVERYBODY made the list!! In order to spare myself any arguments, I’m stating up front that my picks for the “Best of 2017” are not edited in regards to scandal or hideous human behavior.

Film Review: ‘Rebel in the Rye’!!

by Janet White on Oct 14th, 2017

Hello Everyone, Janet W. here…

The Catcher in the Rye took the U.S. by storm nearly from its initial printing. The author, J.D. Salinger, transformed from obscurity to magnified limelight causing him to retract from the world. The more the public wanted to know him or be his infamous character, Holden Caulfield, the more withdrawn Salinger became which increased the mystery. In the past 66 years, the novel has been printed, re-printed, translated and massively distributed throughout the world. Schools have both required and banned the reading for reasons of profanity and its message. Rebel in the Rye details Salinger’s (Nicholas Hoult) life and progression as a writer. From his early years as a willful, smart mouth to an obsessed literary giant. Read the rest of this entry »

Favorite Movie Scene of the Day #1!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 19th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

maxresdefault

Here’s a new addition to the Boomstick Comics lineup – Favorite Movie Scene of the Day! If you’ve seen any of my interviews with filmmakers or actors, one questions I never forget to ask is What is your favorite scene in a movie that has always stuck with you? Everyone gives different answers and they are always caught off guard and have some fun answering this particular question. Just look how much fun Keanu Reeves had answering the question. It’s different than answering “What is your favorite movie?”, because it allows you to think to a specific moment in a film that really connected with you that you never seem to forget, quote, cry over, or laugh at. So I hope to bring some excellent scenes from movies that you’ve forgotten or haven’t seen in a long while in hopes of rekindling a relationship of passion with your favorite movies and characters. This is #1

Soundtracks we want to see released on Vinyl!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 15th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

preview

I just love soundtracks to movies. I always have and I believe I always will. There is something about a score to a film that just perks me up in all the right ways and inspires my creative side, whether it be to write a screenplay or go back an watch that old film I love. Music is an integral part to films and is considered to be the mojo of every movie. I’m sure we’ve all seen that odd YouTube video of the final scene in Star Wars: A New Hope, where Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Chewbacca walk down a crowded arena to receive their medals to zero music. It’s super weird and awkward with no music, but just random sound effects of footsteps and a rare cough, laugh, and Chewie’s roar. John Williams did such a great job, as he always does with Star Wars music, but that final scene of music really puts your emotions on full blast. It’s all from the soundtrack too.

4K UHD Review: ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 18th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

51mxxonme-l

THE FILM

Here we are with the final ‘Hunger Games‘ movie again, ‘Mockingjay’ Part II. With splitting the final chapter into two separate films, you’d think there’d be something worth waiting for or at least a big climax. None of that is found here with Part II, despite what anyone else tells you. I understand why the studio wanted to split the final film into two parts, which would garner double the money and profits off of one story, but in order to have a decent story and film, you need it to go somewhere. In this case, anywhere.

4K UHD Review: ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 15th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

51em8f0xcl

THE FILM

Things are not looking up for Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) in this third installment of Suzanne Collins‘ young adult book series ‘The Hunger Games‘. In an effort to squeeze as much money as they can, the movie studio decided to split the third and final book into two parts, much like the last two ‘Harry Potter‘ films and the recent trilogy of the single book of ‘The Hobbit‘. On one hand, the fans will get two movies. On the other hand, there will be a lot of filler between these two films to stretch them out to their two-hour run time.

4K UHD Review: ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 15th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

51cr14hes4l

THE FILM

This portion of the review was written by Suzanne Loranc.

Everyone can understand that the second movie in any series can be the problematic middle child of a franchise. They tend to suffer between the spellbinding beginning and the satisfying conclusion. However, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire rises above the usual awkward bridge label with excellent performances and a script that remains faithful to the book to make it a movie that could almost stand on its own.

Film Review: ‘Bridge of Spies’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 14th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

‘Bridge of Spies’ by DreamWorks Studios.

The year 2015 gives us yet another Tom Hanks/Steven Spielberg movie called ‘Bridge of Spies‘ with an added bonus of the Coen Bros. serving as co-writers. Now with a cast and crew like this, I expect something that would live on forever and win all the awards come award season. That’s not really the case here though, as Spielberg’s recent directorial efforts have been lacking a bit. I’m not saying they’re bad, I’m just saying that ‘War Horse‘ and ‘Lincoln‘ were long, slow, dreary period pieces with no real momentum, despite some awards and critical acclaim.

Film Review: ‘Diary of a Teenage Girl’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 10th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

diary-of-a-teenage-girl-4

The Diary of A Teenage Girl‘ sounds like it’s a bubble gum pop movie with the latest MTV stars, void of any real emotion or reality, complete with the worst of music today. Fortunately for everyone involved, that’s not the case here with Marielle Heller’s great film, ‘The Diary of A Teenage Girl‘. This indie movie is just full of surprises as we get a graphic glimpse inside the life of one high-schooler’s sexual encounters over the course of about a year. Based on Phoebe Gloeckner’s graphic novel and set in 1970’s San Francisco, the first moment of the film has our main character Minnie (Bel Powley) narrate to us that she just had sex for the first time as she’s walking through the park.

Clark, along with his wife Ellen (Beverly D’Angelo), and their two kids Rusty (Anthony Michael Hall) and Audrey (Dana Barron) encountered a variety of hilarious obstacles and problems along their difficult road trip, but they stuck together as a family and proved that any American family can make it across country without killing one another…mostly.

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 30th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

maxresdefault

The year is 2015 and we have our fifth ‘Terminator‘ film, titled ‘Terminator Genisys‘ or simply ‘Terminator 5‘. I’m going to start by saying that there should NOT be another ‘Terminator‘ film made unless James Cameron returns to write and direct it. There have been three ‘Terminator‘ movies since ‘Terminator 2: Judgement Day‘, all of which were made by people other than James Cameron. How did they turn out? Let’s just say they were less than stellar.

Film Review: ‘Inside Out’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 18th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

Inside-Out-2015-Disney-Movie

I’m a huge fan of Pixar and their animated films. They have changed the way films are made, and each movie since ‘Toy Story 1‘ in 1995 has been a success both critically and financially, making Pixar one of the biggest movie studios ever. Hell, all of the Pixar films combined have made over $9 billion (with a “B”) at the box office. That’s not to mention home video or merchandising sales. Since ‘Toy Story III‘ in 2010, there has only been three Pixar movies, all of which have been less favorited to Pixar’s previous films including ‘Wall-E‘, ‘Up‘, and the third ‘Toy Story‘ movie.

Brace yourselves, every habit-ish line, saying or phrase you can think of is about to be thrust upon you now that Disney has upped the ante on the remake game, announcing that ‘Sister Act‘ is on the block as the next title to be revamped. They’re Catholic, they’re nuns and nuns wear habits, got it.

Film Review: ‘Poltergeist 2015’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 22nd, 2015

Janet W., Here…

Poltergeist-2015-trailer-image-3

Horror, according to Webster: Something that causes feelings of fear, dread, and shock.

Someone should have enlightened the production team of this definition prior to their exploring the “re-imaging” (not remake) of this staple of the horror film genre.  I would not expect real horror in this film.  You will get a Scary Movie version of cheesy horror.  Everything in the 2015 version of Poltergeist is topsy-turvy from its 1982 predecessor.  The Freelings (1982) give way to the Bowens (2015).  Fear, suspense, and horror give way to one-liners and gratuitous special effects.

The Griswolds are back and have planned a new vacation. However it won’t feature Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo this time around, although they do make appearances here. This film follows Clark’s son Rusty (Ed Helms) and his wife (Christina Applegate), and their two kids as they embark on a road trip to Wally World. Rusty tells his family that it was the best time in his life and he wants hi own family to experience the fun and adventure of a family cross-country road trip. I guess they aren’t going to Hawaii again.

Disney’s latest CG animated film ‘Big Hero 6‘ is making its way to Blu-ray on February 24th. In addition, you’ll be able to watch the film digitally on February 3rd, which is more than 20 days prior to the physical release. I was a pretty big fan of ‘Big Hero 6‘, as you can read HERE, and I’m super excited that I’ll get to watch the animated short again ‘Feast‘, when this comes out. And according to this release, there will be options for 3D and 2D, but I can’t seem to find the 3D version anywhere to pre-order. Below are the tech specs and bonus features for the release.

We know that Disney has chosen 30 theaters across the nation that will show the 88-second trailer before each movie playing this Thanksgiving weekend.

‘The Doctor and the Devils’ Blu-Ray Review!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Nov 19th, 2014

Hey guys, Jana here,

doctoranddevils

THE FILM

The Doctor and The Devils‘ is a gothic thriller from the same production company that issued ‘The Fly‘, ‘Spaceballs‘ and ‘Robin Hood: Men in Tights‘ – Brooksfilms. Until I researched a little for this review, I didn’t even realize Mel Brooks‘ company made anything other than the classic hilarity his name automatically recalls. Brooks picked up the script from legendary poet Dylan Thomas, wherein the story of true life grave robbers, Burke and Hare is told. Maybe it was Brooks’ success with ‘The Elephant Man‘ that led him back to the surgical-experimentation game, whatever the conditions were, ‘The Doctor and The Devils‘ did not receive the same praise.

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 6th, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

Disney’s CG animation department is on a huge winning streak. With the success of ‘Wreck It Ralph‘ and ‘Frozen‘, Disney is back in the animation game after a long absence while Pixar did their thing. Dinsey’s latest animated adventure is called ‘Big Hero 6‘, and is based off an old Marvel Comics title. I can safely say that ‘Big Hero 6‘ is a big winner and continues Disney’s streak of success.

Hey guys, Jana here,

CSI-Cyber-Logo

CSI: Cyber‘ is bringing in another cast member with a fan-base of their own that will bring viewers on board just for the nostalgic effect, alone. If you grew up on ‘90210‘ like I did then you’ll be just as excited as I am that Luke Perry has been cast in what is hopefully a recurring role.

Plans are for the former Dylan McKay are that he will play FBI agent Nick Dalton, a character that is eyeing the role of head of the cyber crime division out of D.C. The job went, instead, to the main character, Avery Ryan played by Patricia Arquette.

I knew there was some gas left in this engine and it looks like the Wagon Queen Family Truckster Station Wagon is rolling on with another sequel. This is going to be the second film in the family of Vacation movies that John Hughes hasn’t written. He passed away in 2009, making the Christmas Vacation his last film in the series.  The chain consisting of ‘National Lampoon’s Vacation‘, ‘National Lampoon’s European Vacation‘, follow that up with the holiday staple ‘National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation‘ and finally a last ditch effort to keep the films going with ‘National Lampoon’s Vegas Vacation‘. Netflix is a good place to turn if you want to laugh. Besides their movies and TV shows that can cause you to crack a rib with laughter, they’ve always had a fairly decent supply of live performances by our favorite comedians. I just watched Sherri Shepherd’s stand-up on Netflix, ‘It’s My Time To Talk‘ a few days ago and thought it was one of the most brilliant bits of comedy I’ve seen in a long time.

Hi all, Jana here,

endo-silence-full

Martin Scorsese (‘The Wolf of Wall Street‘ and ‘The Departed‘) is one of my favorite directors. This hasn’t been a secret because I rave on his work, constantly. Well, right now Scorsese is going to get the chance to make a film he’s had on his list for more than a decade. I can’t imagine how that must feel to wait for over 10 years to do a film and it finally comes together! The center of attention in this announcement is that it’s for the film of the novel ‘Silence‘. Novelist Shusako Endo had given permission for the novel adaptation to be made once before in 1971. As with everything in Hollywood these days, a re-make is in the works. This time, a bigger budget, bigger stars, bigger director and , probably, a bigger audience.

Film Review: ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’!!

Back in 2011, I ended my “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” review excited about what the future held for the rebooted series. As the screen went dark and the credits of “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” began to roll, I realized my high expectations had been met just three years later. If “Rise” hit all the right notes of an introductory chapter, then “Dawn” was even more on pitch with the rising action of a second act.

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

Mockingjay

Lionsgate sure has a handle on how to market their films and their new teaser trailer for ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1‘ is no different. Instead of the usual 30 second trailer that is filled with mostly text or footage from previous movies, we have a 1 minute and 12 second video from President Snow (Donald Sutherland) from the Capitol, spewing some evil propaganda. It seems straightforward, but as the camera pulls back from President Snow, someone is revealed, and it just got me all excited for this sequel. Fans will be screaming! Enjoy the short teaser trailer. The film opens November 21st, 2014, so we have a while.

Good news, everyone. Anchor Bay Entertainment and Scream Factory have finally partnered up to give us horror fans something we have wanted for far too long. Not one but two different Blu-Ray box sets that spans all of the ‘Halloween‘ films. There will be tons of new bonus features, every film in high-definition, collectible packaging, and a 40-page Booklet. You can expect this amazing set in time for Halloween season, specifically on September 23rd. Now if we can just get that ‘Phantasm‘ box set to release in the US instead of the UK, all will be well. And today, they have unveiled the amazing Box Art it comes in. This is Fantastic. I Can’t wait. And you can pre-order the set now for 30% off.

Ben K., Here…

Despite a rich and incredibly varied film history, one would be hard pressed to imagine a more famous Japanese cinematic export than Godzilla. Born at Toho Company in 1954, he’s still alive and kicking ass, as it were, at the ripe age of sixty. Cast as a villain and a hero over the years, whatever his role, he has always been nature’s favorite solution to just about any problem. Six decades ago he was awakened by atomic bomb testing and took revenge on mankind for creating them. In this new Gareth Edwards iteration, other monsters feed on radiation from our nuclear power plants in order to wreak similar havoc, so Godzilla is sent to annihilate them.

Film Review: ‘Godzilla’ (2014)!!

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

It has been sixty years since ‘Godzilla‘, the true king of all monsters first graced us with his appearance on the big screen. He definitely made a big impact on audiences around the world and spawned 31 sequels and remakes since then. Director Gareth Edwards brings that number to 32 with his epic and dark toned reboot that is sure to please fans young and old and have them roaring with joy as they exit the theater. Edwards was Hollywood’s top  choice to reboot this franchise after everyone saw his 2010 film called ‘Monsters‘, which focused on two lost lonely souls who have to trek through a quarantined zone in Mexico, while evading giant tentacled monsters.

Amazon Announces 4 Pilots Green-lit for Series!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Mar 13th, 2014

Hello Jana here,

 dt.common.streams.StreamServer

Amazon jumped head-first into original programming with 5 pilots that were uploaded to their site where they encouraged viewers to watch and comment their opinions. I’m guessing they got the reaction they wanted as they have now picked four of the titles to give a series order. This includes the first dramas for their fledgling, innovative line-up with ‘The After‘ and ‘Bosch‘. Their new comedy series are ‘Mozart In The Jungle‘ and ‘Transparent‘. The fifth pilot that was not picked up, ‘The Rebels‘ comes from Ice Cube and Michael Strahan. From Amazon’s first pilot season saw eight comedies going to pilot while only two were picked up for series, ‘Alpha House‘ and ‘Betas‘. Of those two, ‘Alpha House‘ has been renewed for a second season and ‘Betas‘ has been discontinued.

 How-I-Met-Your-Mother-7

You can’t bottle lightning and you won’t likely see it strike the same place twice. Yet, television networks seem to be banking on just that improbability becoming the mainstay instead of the rare event it really is. Sadly, those of us that love truly original story lines are running out of things to watch. The silver screen has been a big culprit of this with the barrage of re-makes from successful movies barely 20 years old and mediocre tv shows that have earned the big screen treatment. I always hoped the small screen was safe since spin-offs never seem to do as well as the predecessor. Of course there are exceptions to this rule, but they are few and far between. I’m now taking bets on which of these proposed and shows in the works will make it through their first full season. I’m kidding, I’m not a bookie. Seriously, though…I’ll give you excellent odds.

The Top 20 Vampire Movies Of All Time!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 20th, 2013

Jana B., Here…

085 - Evil Ed

I love making lists. Grocery lists. Bucket lists. Holiday lists. Favorite movie lists. Favorite VAMPIRE movie lists. I bet that got your attention, didn’t it? This is MY list of the top 20 Vampire movies ever made. Why did I point out that it was MY list? Easy. So you read this knowing it wasn’t an Academy vote that got a movie on this list. No one paid me to promote their movie. However, I’m NOT against this, just to be clear. Why spend time putting movies in a list? Maybe it satisfies some Freudian lack of paternal affection I suffered as a child. But the real answer is, “Why wouldn’t I make a list as awesome as this?”

The ABC Family network has just inked a deal for a new horror television series from writer Jeff Dixon, called ‘The Final Girls‘. Get this…horror starlet Jamie Lee Curtis is set to star with Steve Miner directing and executive producing. Of course this is just the pilot episode, but I’m willing to bet that this pilot goes to series fast.

Film Review: ‘Pacific Rim’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 10th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

Robots, monsters, and Ron Perlman. Oh my. Director Guillermo Del Toro has given us a movie that we’ve all wanted to see since we were five years old. In an action-packed and brilliant special effects film, we have giant 30-story robots fighting vicious mega monsters on Earth. Guillermo was the perfect person for this project as he is a fan of genre films and can tell a great story with flawless structure and good acting, while mixing in loud and vibrating action sequences. ‘Pacific Rim‘ movies fast and will keep you on your toes till the very end, and while this summer has proved that big budget action movies won’t always go the distance, I’m betting this one will.

Film Review: ‘The Lone Ranger’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 2nd, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

tonto-theloneranger-cliffs

Director Gore Verbinsky certainly borrows heavily from his animated Western, ‘Rango‘, along with some other choice films for his latest mega budget action adventure film ‘The Lone Ranger‘. In what seems to be a project greenlit only for the fact that Johnny Depp was willing to get in makeup and costume again and sport a new iconic character, this remake is deeply flawed and way too long. Running at two-and-a-half hours, this adventure flick could have been loads better with a full hour knocked off its run-time.

After the critical and financial success of J.J. Abrams first installment of the Star Trek reboot, we have been caught in a cycle of anticipation and apprehension leading up to Star Trek Into Darkness. Could Abrams possibly pull off a movie as fantastic or would we be left thinking he was spent after the first? Would he continue to remain true to the geekfest of science talk that places Trek above Wars? Would we get tired of the lens flares? Yes, Yes, and no.

Film Review: ‘Trance’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Apr 4th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

Danny Boyle is one of my favorite and one of the great modern filmmakers of the last twenty years.  His unique style and ability to make a film in a different genre each time he gets in the director’s seat has not only proved successful and earned him critical praise and awards, but it shows that he has limitless talent to entertain a wide variety of audiences across the globe. With his latest film, ‘Trance‘, Boyle shows he still has what it takes to make a modern noir movie with so many twists and turns, that eventually you  will give up trying to figure what’s going on in the story, and fall into Boyle’s “trance” of betrayal, thievery, and sex in this art heist thriller.

Hey there, little rock n’ roll devils, Napkin Art here…

Alright, so I realize I’m a few days behind on talking about the Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds show from March 14th, but hell, I’m still reeling from how awesome the experience was. Needed a few extra days to process it all.

As anticipated, Australia’s dark and lovely darlings, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, hit up SMU’s McFarlin Auditorium in support of their 15th album release, Push The Sky Away, with guns, fists and instruments blazing, like it was a real gunfight at the OK Coral. No eardrum or blackened soul was spared during the two hour set. Read the rest of this entry »

Christina Applegate is in the final stages of talks to secure her role in the new ‘Vacation‘ film, which is starring Ed Helms as Rusty Griswold.  John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein are both directing the project which will play out like a sequel and reboot to the widely successful ‘National Lampoon’s Vactiaon‘ films that starred Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo.
