The Dark Tower‘. The title is enough to make Stephen King fans, directors, actors and Hollywood as a whole hold their breath waiting to see which direction the next bit of news will be taking our emotions. Definitely with good reason, since the series of books has been attempted, many times over, to be cut into slices manageable enough for the big screen, it’s difficult because that novel series is a mammoth undertaking.

True Detective‘ set the bar higher than normal by casting the brilliant Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. HBO has now turned it’s eye to ‘Westworld‘ hoping it will turn out to be as irresistible as ‘True Detective‘. HBO has won a pretty big prize in locking Academy Award winner Anthony Hopkins and Evan Rachel Wood for the primary positions. Writer-Director Michael Crichton made the original ‘Westworld‘ in 1973, Yul Brynner, James Brolin, Dick Van Patten – Yeah, it was a whole thing.

The first trailer and poster for the film ‘The Post‘ is standing straight up. It’s a big deal, because it has Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep in the lead roles with Steven Spielberg in the director’s chair. That’s a powerhouse right there. 4K UHD Review: ‘Kick-Ass’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 2nd, 2017

THE FILM

Back in 2008, Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. created a new comic book that was kick-ass, that they in fact named it ‘Kick-Ass‘. It was basically Spider-Man if Spider-Man had no superpowers and was had a hardcore R rating. The amount of creative energy, violence, comedy, and character development that went into the comic was magical as it was entertaining and wonderful. Millar just had a way with words and story plot that made this comic book called ‘Kick-Ass‘ solid gold. It was to nobody’s surprise that only two years later, we got a feature film directed by Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake, X-Men: First Class, Kingsman) and produced by Brad Pitt, that ignited a new breed of R rated superhero films.

Film Review: ‘[The Dark Tower]’!!

by Janet White on Aug 5th, 2017

Hello Everyone, Janet W. here…

From the warped, creative mind of Stephen King comes a story of the oldest of battles, good versus evil. The master of the weird provided eight books in The Dark Tower series for Nikolaj Arcel, the director, to mold and shape for our viewing pleasure. Jake Chambers (Tom Taylor), a seemingly typical kid, awakes from slumber with his walls and the ground shaking. Natural disaster? No, because it happens far too often. Visions plague Jake’s and the earthquakes are the result, but why? What is it about Jake? He will journey far (and I mean FAR) to discover the truth. Read the rest of this entry »

Film Review: ‘Game of Death’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 15th, 2017

Audrey E., here…

Screen Shot 2017-03-15 at 12.04.09 PM

A resurgence of the 1990s is happening and Hollywood seems to be taking notice with ‘Game of Death,’ a Canadian horror film that opens with bright, pixilated credits – an homage to the decade’s early style of gaming. In a surreal turn of events, a group of seven unlucky millennials: Tom (Sam Earle), Beth (Victoria Diamond), Ashley (Emelia Hellman), Mary-ann (Catherine Saindon), Tyler (Erniel Baez), Kenny (Nick Serino) & Matthew (Thomas Vallieres) after a summer afternoon of drinking and drugs in a pool house, unwillingly become slaves to a board game that, just like ‘Jumanji‘ (can we pretend like the 2017 remake isn’t happening, by the way?), won’t let you quit until it’s finished.

Ten Great Lesser-Known Films Starring Big Name Actors!!

You might find yourself reading the following list, thinking “Hey! I’ve seen all these movies! How dare you claim them to be ‘lesser-known’!” My response to you, should you say such a thing, is “congratulations.” You see, just because you are a film nut like me, doesn’t mean that the rest of the populace is. The following is a list of ten good films with big-named actors that somehow slipped under the general radar. I’m not saying they are completely unknown, but based upon ticket sales, it certainly seems like they slipped the notice of the general public. These are all solid films that, should you enjoy these actors, you definitely want to check them out (the films, not the actors – although to each their own, I guess).

Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson and Michelle Monaghan star in the freshman season of the anthology police detective show. The detectives reminesce on a case from 1995 that has been closed as solved. Questions surface that force those involved to dredge up memories from the past, in looking closer at the variables, corruption is evident on both sides of the thin blue line.

Hey guys, Jana here,

american-sniper-6

In the world of film, there are specific genres that stand out for me and one of those is war movies. I love different titles for a variety of reasons, the story, or even an actor, in this category there is one primary theme that ties each film together – heroes. Their outstanding courage is what gives us that lump in our throats and a swell of patriotic pride that causes us to lift these characters, real or imagined, to elevated heights. It takes a special kind of person to be a hero, I know I couldn’t do it, but I am eternally grateful for the men and women that take up that mantle and defend the lives and freedoms I hold so dearly.

Jana’s Best/Worst of 2014!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Dec 15th, 2014

Hey guys, Jana here,

PicMonkey Collage

It’s been a big year for the entertainment world. Netflix’s initial push to bring movie-theater worthy films straight to streaming customers and bypassing the big screen altogether set off a chain of deals that will take those fresh releases and push them directly into homes allowing us to bypass a $15.00 soda, but denying us the $20.00 popcorn you can only get at the theater. Then came the deluge of series and movies being made for exclusive run with everyone from Netflix, Amazon to Crackle and everything in between. Top that off with the huge breach of privacy Sony experienced. New releases were flooded onto P2P sharing sites and private emails from the film company’s big wigs that show us how the infrastructure of Sony really works, not to mention what those involved really think of some of their superstars.

THE FILM

Would you say “Pumpkinhead‘ three times in the dark in front of a mirror? Of course you would, because you haven’t been a bad girl or boy, have you? I remember seeing ‘Pumpkinhead‘ on VHS back when it came out in the late 80s and fell in love with the horrifying creature known as Pumpkinhead, despite some of the movie’s flaws. Hell, I even owned several of they action figures and toys of Pumpkinhead over the years and every time I come across it in my house, I think, “I better be a good person or Pumkpkinhead will come after me.” Well at least that is what I thought when I was younger. But what most interested me, was the creature itself. And that’s where the late, great legend Stan Winston comes into play.

Top Ten Perfectly Cast Roles

The Bard of Avon said it best, “Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.” Some actors are great, and shine in everything they do (Leonardo DiCaprio, Gary Oldman, Daniel Day-Lewis). Some actors are smart enough to pick roles that best use their limited skill sets (Keanu Reeves). This list takes a look at the perfect pairing of actor and role. In this list, you will find a pairing of actor and role so great that the actor ceases to be themselves and instead makes the character take on a life of its own. These pairings are so uniquely theirs that you can’t imagine anyone else taking their place should Hollywood have the audacity to try.

It has been sixty years since ‘Godzilla‘, the true king of all monsters first graced us with his appearance on the big screen. Director Gareth Edwards brings that number to 32 with his epic and dark toned reboot that is sure to please fans young and old and have them roaring with joy as they exit the theater. Hello, Jana here,

h0qn7y2r4ikrdkrf7ve4

A John Grisham novel is like a mug of coffee on a stormy day, a glass of wine after the kids are asleep, or even a Xanax when you want to rip someone’s head off. The point is, it’s a calming, reassuring presence. It’s going to be an intense, legal, thrill ride that has a feel-good ending. Grisham’s tried and true writing style is gripping, authentic and something that lends itself to film adaptation easily. This has been the case with ‘The Firm‘, ‘The Pelican Brief‘, ‘The Client‘ and ‘A Time to Kill‘ among several others. There is even a complete departure from his norm evident in ‘Christmas With The Kranks‘.

Film Review: ‘Divergent’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 20th, 2014

Hi, Bryan Here…

DIVERGENT

Ok, I’ll admit it. My name is Bryan Kluger, and I’m a Young Adult Movie virgin. I’ve never seen a ‘Twilight‘ movie nor have I seen either of ‘The Hunger Games‘ yet. And to be perfectly honest, I have not yet read any of these books that the movies were based on. Part of it is that I never got around to it while another part was that these stories didn’t really interest me. With ‘Twilight‘, my personal preference is to have my monsters whether they be vampires or werewolves, go on a nightly bender, wreaking havoc and killing for blood, only to have a hero stop their evil thirst and put them in their place. They are not to have vampires who wear glitter and talk about their feelings for three hours. It just doesn’t make sense to me.

Film Review: ‘Dallas Buyers Club’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 8th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

dallas-buyers-club-movie-photo-6

Jean-Marc Vallee’s ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ is a fresh take on the recognized AIDS plot, complete with a knockout script, and some amazing performances by Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto. This true-life narrative feature about Ron Woodroof, a Dallas native straight man who is diagnosed with HIV in the 80s is is not as down-trodden as it might seem at first glance. I’m sure McConaughey’s name and creepy weight-loss, which was widely reported in the news will draw out a decent crowd, but this little Indie film won’t be able to compete with the likes of superheroes, but it damn sure deserves it.

There are certain types of entertainment where you can have several favorites. You can listen to multiple bands that fit into the same genre. Yes, the one with the hair and the face. Him. So, I never jumped on the whole David Blaine band wagon. How cool is that?  Below is the full list of Oscar nominations.  Let us know what you think.  We will be posting a separate article soon on Oscar snubs, because believe me, there are many.  And don’t forget, we will be doing our annual LIVE OSCAR COMMENTARY, which will mark the 6th time we have done it.  It promises tons of laughs.

Bryan’s Review of ‘The Trouble With The Curve’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 24th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

‘Trouble With The Curve’ is one of the cheesiest films I have seen in recent memory.  If this film were a burger, it would be a triple cheese burger with a side of cheese fries. That’s not to say that it doesn’t have moments of good.  It does, but ‘Trouble With The Curve’ tries to force feed you what you should be feeling and thinking at every moment.  Even with its amazing cast and baseball trivia, ‘Trouble With The Curve’ never slid into home plate to win the game.  Yes, I know that was cheesy, but then, that’s how I felt watching ‘Trouble With The Curve’.

Hi Bryan Here…..

The 84th annual Academy Award nominations are in.  There are a couple of surprises that I was very happy to see on here and tons of disappointment.  It looks like the Academy went with 9 Best Picture noms this year rather than 10.  They also only went with 3 noms for make up which I can think of others, and only two for original song.  Was this a time issue, so that the event would be over on time for once rather than have all 5 songs being sung?  I don’t like it, but that’s how it is this year.  Below you will see each category with my thoughts.  Enjoy.

Hi Bryan Here….

Criterion rolls out the red carpet yet again with the re-release of the instant cult classic ‘Dazed and Confused’.  This time it is on glorious blu-ray.  This movie will live on forever.  There really isn’t another movie like it.  The characters, the music, the dialogue are all quoted and duplicated today.  This film started the careers of tons of big named actors including: Parker Posey, Ben Affleck, Matthew McConaughey, Milla Jovovich, Joey Lauren Adams, and a few others.  This re-release is virtually the same as the previous criterion release, but in blu-ray.  And let me just say, it is worth the upgrade.  The picture and sound are top notch.

Hi Bryan Here…

This past weekend I was fortunate enough to get to experience Kevin Smith’s latest film, “RED STATE” in Kansas City, Missouri.  This was, to say the least, one of my BEST film experiences i have ever had.  To be a part of this event was like being a part of history in the making.  At least that is what it felt like to me.  I first remember hearing that Kevin Smith (the Clerks & Mallrats guy) was writing and planing to make a horror film.  A political horror film at that.  This was a couple of years ago or more.  after i first heard this news, I thought to myself, “This could be something great.  Kevin can write dialogue like no one else and with his talent of writing, he can make one hell of a horror film.  But would it be comedic?  Would it have all the dick and butt-hole jokes like the rest of films have? I can’t wait to find out.”  And from what transpired at the Midland AMC Theatre on March 12th, 2011 was heavily drenched with heart, soul, courage, great filmmaking, Star Wars, and LOVE.

Hi Bryan Here…

I want you all to give a warm welcome to Boomstick’s new contributing writer, Dr. Joel Hawkins.  He hails from the underground sewers of North Texas and is at least two of the following: gay robot, french polynesian eskimo, slovakian zombie, green blooded canadian, and avatar.  His favorite color is rainbow and when he is not eating cake covered in lucky charms, he is a master at slaying dragons and writing articles about films, television, and music.  Welcome Dr. Joel Hawkins.

Matthew Vaughn (Kick Ass, X-Men: First Class) has a new adventure he’d like to take now that he’s left the School of the Gifted.  Unaware as to whether he’ll direct or produce, Vaughn shared a dream of his with Deadline of hoping to invite Clint Eastwood, Warren Beaty, and Jack Nicholson back to “the lead again” instead of the supporting roles they’ve played so much lately.

Weekend Events in the Metroplex Take 2

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 10th, 2010

At the Inwood theatre in Dallas this weekend, the midnight showing will be “Xanadu”.  The showing will be Friday and Saturday night at midnight.  Maybe you can sing a long with the movie.  Inwood theatre is on Lovers Ln. and Inwood Rd. in Dallas.

One of the better bands of this decade will be opening up for Dave Matthews Band on September 11 at Coca Cola Starplex or now known as Super Pages.com Center.  (Fuck I hate that name.)  If you have not heard Black Joe Lewis, head HERE and listen and get their album.  See them if you get a chance.

This Friday and Sunday at the Ballpark in Arlington, The Texas Rangers will be playing the New York Yankees.  Friday’s game starts at 6:05pm and Sunday’s game starts at 1:05pm.  Hot Dogs, Beer, Rangers, and the Yankees seems like an excellent time.

This barbecue competition and street festival debuts in Oak Cliff on Sunday the 12th with a nod to famous people who had ties to the Cliff, including bluesmen T-Bone Walker and Stevie Ray Vaughan and outlaws Bonnie and Clyde. The event will include live music and an art show.  One of my good friends Kevin Johns will be competing in the BBQ chicken tournament. Vote for HIM!  Click HERE for more info.

Beginning Sunday, September 12, Central 214 at the Hotel Palomar of 75 and Mockingbird will feature a different Will Ferrell movie each week. Seated on one of the chic outdoor couches in the courtyard with crab stuffed mushroom and your favorite cocktail in hand, you can do nothing but leave lighthearted to prepare for your busy week ahead.

The flicks begin at dusk (After 8 p.m.) each Sunday.  This Sunday will be Old  School.
