Film Review: ‘Lady Bird’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 9th, 2017

Youth and revolt amidst a Catholic institution is not new territory, let’s be direct. But what’s more remarkable these days is taking a stale idea and making it appear fresh. Greta Gerwig’s directorial debut is a familiar story, yes, but this time the perspective is flipped and reversed into the female itinerary. ‘Lady Bird‘ is colorful, melancholic and genuine. It methodically tells the trivial and vital trials of a teenage girl’s life with such accuracy, it feels as if you’re staring into the mirror and seeing a former self.

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 10th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

The ‘Thunderbirds‘ are back for those that are interested in a remake of the 50-year old classic series now titled ‘Thunderbirds Are Go‘. Amazon has got the rights to air the new series and has already ordered FOUR seasons of the show with 13 episodes each. The first two seasons have already aired in the UK late last year and this year, but the next two seasons should be up and running later this year and next. The new series uses a mix of live-action and CG in the adventures of the Thunderbirds, which include Lady Penelope, Scott, John, Virgil, Gordon, and Alan.

Hey guys, Jana here,

Straight from it’s dynamic debut where it premiered January 21, 2018, at the Sundance Film Festival in the Midnight section, comes ‘Hereditary‘ to theaters nation wide June 8th, 2018. It’s a combination drama/mystery/horror film that will make anyone take a second look at their family. The writer director Ari Aster is the man behind this film, both from his pen and his artistic vision that brought the project to fruition. This is Aster’s first feature length film after helming and writing   a handful of short films. With positive reviews coming in, it seems his first attempt at a full length film was a success, at least that’s what the 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes would suggest. I’m sure that’s a relief for PalmStar Media (‘Collateral Beauty‘), Windy Hill Pictures, and A24 (‘Lady Bird‘, ‘The Florida Project‘, ‘The Disaster Artist‘) who were the production companies backing the flick.

Jana’s Best of 2017!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jan 1st, 2018

Hey guys, Jana here,

I know these “Best of 2017” lists should technically be published in 2017, but why would I start 2018 any differently than I lived the majority of my adult life: Procrastinating and underachieving. What can I say? That’s my wheelhouse.

For a year that put a spotlight on some of the shittiest behavior by some of the Hollywood elite, it was actually a good year for TV and movies. I didn’t limit myself in number because as I moved on with the brackets, I felt like I was making ‘Sophie’s Choice‘ on some of these, so they’re all getting in! I’m feeling my inner-Oprah here, You’ve made the list! You made the list! EVERYBODY made the list!! In order to spare myself any arguments, I’m stating up front that my picks for the “Best of 2017” are not edited in regards to scandal or hideous human behavior.

Film Review: ‘The Seagull’!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 24th, 2018

The Seagull, a Chekhov play which has been adapted for screen by Michael Mayer, sorely misses the mark. I say this without having read the play; however, I all but guarantee you that Chekhov is rolling over in his grave. I saw the preview for this film in the theater and it didn’t look half bad: the cast is filled with strong women and well known men. Leading the way are Annette Bening, Saoirse Ronan and Elisabeth Moss. While they all have strong performances, they could only do so much with the material they were given. Rounding off the cast are Corey Stoll, John Tenney and Brian Dennehy.

Dan Moran’s Top 12 Movies of 2017 Plus Extras!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 4th, 2018

I saw 75 movies this year and I still have 3-4 left to finish up over the next few weeks. I haven’t seen The Post, Call Me By Your Name, or Phantom Thread yet. Phantom Thread is the only regret I have but it doesn’t come out until mid-January and I like to finish my list before first week of January ends. A few special awards before my top 12.

Hey guys, Jana here,

The 15th Annual Tallgrass Film Festival is set to run from October 18 – 22 in Wichita, KS. The weekend boasts the inaugural presentation of the L.M. “Kit” Carson Storyteller Award to Larry Gross (‘48 Hours‘), and Ad Astra Award presentation to Rose McGowan (‘Charmed‘). One of the ticket packages includes a massage.

The festival has given us a complete lineup of films for their 2017 event and since I’m such a nice person it’s my job, I’m giving it to you.

Film Review: ‘A United Kingdom’!!

by Janet White on Feb 24th, 2017

Hello Everyone, Janet W. here…

A United Kingdom - Date

Set in the late 1940s London and the country of Botswana (formerly the British Protectorate of Bechuanaland),  A United Kingdom, is a love story in the spirit of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Society has many ways to try to separate a couple that crosses the barrier and exemplify love is love. Whether it says you cannot be that person because they are from the wrong family, different caste, or, as in this case, of different races, people of vision for a better world have struggled against Society. Sir Seretse Goitsebeng Maphiri Khama (David Oyelowo), was soon to become King of Botswana when he first laid eyes on Ruth Williams (Rosamund Pike), a white British woman. The love they come to have for each can either cripple the nation of Botswana or be its champion. Read the rest of this entry »

Film Review: ‘The Vatican Tapes’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 19th, 2015

Paul N., Here…

maxresdefault

It is easy to take a film or genre that has met with success and copy the ever-loving crap out of it. In fact, Hollywood has been doing just that for years. You can’t tell me that you haven’t noticed the barrage of sequels, reboots, and remakes that have saturated the market over the last several decades! It’s much more difficult (also costly) to create something brand new and refreshing. The Vatican Tapes is another in a long line of exorcism films hoping to cash in on the success of The Exorcist and the like.

Film Review: ‘Heaven Knows What’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 12th, 2015

Janet W., Here…

maxresdefault

What is love in the mind of an addict?  What would you do to prove your love under a heroin haze?  Heaven Knows What takes the viewer on a twisted walk through the dark world of addiction on the streets of New York City.  The audience follows Harley (Arielle Holmes), a young woman whose addiction to heroin is almost as powerful as her addiction to her boyfriend, Ilya (Caleb Landry Jones).  Or is it the other way around?  Trying to make sense of a drug-ridden mind’s motivation or intention is a lost cause.  Perhaps this fact led to the film’s title.  Truly, who could understand why an addict would do anything.

Film Review: ‘Good Kill’!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 21st, 2015

Janet W., Here…

8E9A6700.CR2

Good Kill opens from a drone’s eye view over Afghanistan.  This reality gives the best manifestation of “Death from Above.”  Seven thousand miles away a pilot guides this miniature death bird.  Thomas Egan (Ethan Hawke) wants nothing more than to pilot a F16 again.  Having originally signed up for a one-year tour of duty with the UAVs, Egan is best in class on his 3rd tour.  Physically back from the war, Egan’s life has been diminished in many ways.  He cannot relate to his wife Molly (January Jones) or the domestic life in Las Vegas.  Egan roams between work and home as though he is on autopilot.  Suddenly the “Christian in Action” (aka CIA) hijacks his team for their covert off the books operations.  The job was hard enough with the long distance assassination of unsuspecting enemies.  Now, the call as to whether the person(s) in their sights are the enemy is taken from them.  How long can they continue?
