James Cameron Wants to Make 4 ‘Avatar’ Films!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 7th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

I guess we won’t be getting that sequel to ‘True Lies’ anytime soon, because James Cameron will only be making ‘Avatar’ films.  He doesn’t even want to produce any other films.  He just wants to make and possibly live in the world of ‘Avatar’.  The New York Times did an interview with Cameron over the weekend, and  he had confirmed that he was going to make at least three more ‘Avatar’ films.

Hi, Bryan Here….

Director James Cameron recently spoke with the good folks at GuardianUK and mentioned that he wants to make the sequel to Ridley Scott’s ‘Prometheus’.  Let’s not forget that Ridley Scott directed the first ‘Alien’ film while James Cameron followed that up with his sequel ‘Aliens’.  It’s only fitting that the two directors would direct the prequels one after the other.

As a huge fan of Buffy, I couldn’t believe it when my friend Michael Champion posted a picture from DCC Fan Appreciation Day with James C. Leary, known for his role as “Clem” on seasons six and seven of Buffy the  Vampire Slayer. I thought to myself, “How does he know THAT guy?” So I did what any good Fangirl would do, I stalked his Facebook page. Turns out his path and mine were about to cross in a seriously awesome way- James works in Austin, at company run my by, none other than my brother. This was my IN, my way to a dialogue. Blu-ray Review: ‘Muppets Most Wanted’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 14th, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

MuppetsMostWantedBlurayCombo_jpg_rgb

THE FILM

It’s very difficult to find a sequel that’s as good as the original. There aren’t a lot out there that are great sequels, but when they do come along, they are remembered forever. And maybe what worked so well for the first Muppet film that starred Jason Segel and Amy Adams is that it had a human element to it, and didn’t just follow the Muppets around. That’s not to say that this sequel ‘Muppets: Most Wanted‘ isn’t a lot of fun and very entertaining. It is, but it doesn’t have that magic that the last one had.

James Van Der Beek has come a long way from being the whiny Dawson, the boy with his own creek. JVDB has tried to maintain his TV presence with parts here and there or in a few shows as the star. ‘Don’t Trust The B—- in Apartment 23‘ was an entirely ridiculous plot with JVDB playing himself and ‘Friends With Better Lives‘ did not hold widespread appeal to fans or advertisers and it was canceled. Some people might slink off into the unknown depths after a couple of failures, but you don’t know JVDB apparently. You don’t make a name for yourself by crying on a ridiculous teen drama without being able to rise above the petty crap a show like that can saddle you with.

Looks like Patrick Bateman will still be returning videotapes, as FX wants the ‘American Psycho‘ storyline and characters for a tv series. Allison Shearmur and Stefan Jaworski are behind the project. ‘American Psycho‘ was first a novel written by Brett Easton Ellis, and is still considered one of the best books of the decade. Before James Cameron dives in heavy into the sequel for Avatar, he will be heading to Brazil again to make a documentary in 3-D no less about the indigenous tribes of the Amazon who strongly oppose the construction of a dam that will put their land at risk from flooding.  This sounds a lot like the film “The Emerald Forest” which was a great movie or of course “Avatar”.

Cameron said, “I want to return to meet some of the leaders of the Xikrin-Kayapo tribe who invited me. I want to take a 3D camera to film how they live, their culture.”

We will get to see a peak at this documentary on the upcoming “Avatar” special edition dvd and blu-ray.

I don’t really know why this documentary would want to be in 3-D.  What’s the point?  Will I want to pay the extra money to see it in 3-D?  Probably not.  Cameron’s Titanic documentary was badass though and if this documentary is anything like that, then I will be there to see it.

There are a handful of horror movies over the last decade that really satisfy us horror fans. Films like ‘The Babadook‘, ‘It Follows‘, and ‘The Conjuring‘ will still be talked about for years to come. One name in the horror genre, or at least in recent years is James Wan. Marvel took a wide lead over their DC counterpart in both quality and quantity of films produced, but DC is looking to make a comeback and that’s starting with this summer’s ‘Superman V Batman: Dawn of Justice‘. From there, we have stand-alone movies that feature our favorite comic book supes and among those in the works is ‘Justice League: Part One‘ and ‘Aquaman‘.

It’s difficult to talk about ‘Fast and Furious 7‘ or how it’s billed ‘Furious 7‘, without mentioning the tragic accident that cost actor Paul Walker his life back in November. This accident was not part of filming, but did drastically change the story line and halted production for quite a while. Walker had not finished filming his scenes, but you wouldn’t know it, as the filmmakers used a combination of amazing CGI and stunt doubles to add him through the entire film. It’s seamless and flawless in that aspect, and yes, there is a very moving tribute to him at the end of the film, which might cause you to choke back a few tears. I know I had too.

It’s been a couple of years since we had a great and pure horror film, capable of producing genuine scares. ‘The Conjuring‘ seems to have re-vitalized the genre this summer. Filmmaker James Wan brought us ‘Saw‘ and ‘Insidious‘, which both changed the horror genre when they were released. Now, Wan brings us ‘The Conjuring‘, where he set out to make an homage to the classic 60s and 70s horror films that rely on building tension and genuine scares rather than CG effects and gore that we have come to expect out of most horror flicks these days. The results pack a good and scary punch that box office receipts this weekend will score big with this frightening film.

Bryan’s Most Anticipated Films for 2011!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 7th, 2011

Hi Bryan Here…

So 2010 is over and 2011 has just begun.  I was recently talking with a friend and we both agreed that 2010 was kind of a let down as far as movies went.  Don’t get me wrong, there were some precious gems riddled throughout the year, but they were not many.  Basically I said, that it was a very uncool year with flashes of coolness in regards to films.

Film Review: ‘The First Purge’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 4th, 2018

We’ve arrived at the 4th installment of The Purge, which is a prequel to the previous three films, simply titled The First Purge. The creator of this film franchise – James DeMonaco has left the director’s chair for the first time in this franchise and given the reigns to Fruitvale Station associate producer Gerard McMurray. While DeMonaco is still listed as the writer and producer of this new film, The First Purge doesn’t do really anything new, nor does it enhance anything that we haven’t already seen before in the previous films. Each Purge film has a different overall feel to it. The first movie can be described as a home invasion film, while the 2nd Purge took to the streets in a very Escape from New York kind of way, while the third film was its mostly a violent political thriller at best.

UPGRADE

Upgrade is an excellent 90 minute Black Mirror episode. If you enjoy action movies or anything sci-fi I suggest checking out this quiet little movie before it leaves theaters. The basic plot is in the near future a guy has his spine severed when he and his wife get attacked by a group of men. After becoming a quadriplegic, he undergoes an experimental procedure that puts an AI chip in his spine. This chip gives him some superhuman abilities and senses which he uses to hunt down his wife’s killers.

Blu-ray Review: ‘The Disaster Artist’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 8th, 2018

THE FILM

(This film portion was written by Fernando Martinez)

By now you must know about the “The Room.”  If by some chance you don’t know what it is, I would highly recommend viewing before watching “The Disaster Artist,” although it is by no means required.  Just as a cliff’s note, “The Room” is a cult film known as the best worst movie ever made.  It’s a melodramatic poorly acted mess, but it has hit a chord with enough people to gain midnight movie status, along with audience participation a-la Rocky Horror Picture Show.  It is a beast all of its own and it has drawn the love from college stoners to A list actors alike.  Naturally, in the center of the Venn Diagram of these fanbases, lies James Franco.

4K UHD Review: ‘Thor: Ragnarok’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 26th, 2018

THE FILM

Thor is starring in his third stand-alone film called ‘Thor: Ragnarok‘ and brings a much needed change to the character in the best possibly way. Thor now has a fun personality and great comedic timing, mostly due to Chris Hemsworth amazing acting chops here. In addition to that, the film is steeped in a hypnotic, yet hyper-active color scheme that looks like Willy Wonka and Andy Warhol got together and decorated a city. In fact, Wonka’s theme ‘Pure Imagination’ is a song that plays in the film. It’s not all cold and stiff dialogue here anymore with brown or earth toned aliens and robots that Thor has to use his hammer to fight. Everyone and everything is covered in bright primary and pastel colors that creates a breath of fresh air in this stale universe. That’s all thanks to filmmaker Taika Waititi for giving his unique vision on this big budget film ($180 million). In previous Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, particularly with Thor, things have been sour and gloomy.

Jana’s Best of 2017!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jan 1st, 2018

Hey guys, Jana here,

I know these “Best of 2017” lists should technically be published in 2017, but why would I start 2018 any differently than I lived the majority of my adult life: Procrastinating and underachieving. What can I say? That’s my wheelhouse.

For a year that put a spotlight on some of the shittiest behavior by some of the Hollywood elite, it was actually a good year for TV and movies. I didn’t limit myself in number because as I moved on with the brackets, I felt like I was making ‘Sophie’s Choice‘ on some of these, so they’re all getting in! I’m feeling my inner-Oprah here, You’ve made the list! You made the list! EVERYBODY made the list!! In order to spare myself any arguments, I’m stating up front that my picks for the “Best of 2017” are not edited in regards to scandal or hideous human behavior.

Favorite Movies of 2017!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 27th, 2017

Was 2017 a great year for movies? Of course it was. There were some excellent films to be released in 2017. There were also some bad ones for sure, but the focus on this article are some of the Best films that stuck with me long after viewing. Most people will give you their Top 10 list, but this is no Top 10, because there are just so many movies that I loved and feel passionate about, that I find it difficult and unpleasing to rank them.

Instead, these are my favorite movies of 2017, which I hope you’ve seen already. If you haven’t yet, you’re in for a real treat and I can’t wait for you to see them. Some of these films are still in theaters, while some are on Netflix, 4K UHD, and Blu-ray, so you’ll be able to quickly see any of these if you haven’t. I watched over 270 movies that were released in 2017 and these are my absolute favorites. I hope you get to see all of these, because I know you’ll love them. In no particular order…..

‘Brigsby Bear’ is coming to Blu-ray!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 8th, 2017

Brigsby Bear‘ is coming to Blu-ray and Digital Streaming on November 14th from Sony Pictures. You might have missed ‘Brigsby Bear‘ in the theaters, but it’s one you shouldn’t miss at home. The film is written by Kyle Mooney and directed by Dave McCary, who both still work at ‘SNL‘. The film stars Mooney, Claire Danes, Mark Hamill, Greg Kinnear, and Matt Walsh  and is a mix of comedy and emotions about a young man, setting out to make a movie. There’s so much more to it than that, but I don’t want to give anything away. Bonus features will include deleted scenes, a commentary track, deleted scenes, and more. More below.

Coming to America 2 is Happening!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 28th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

It looks like it’s official. ‘Coming to America 2‘ is finally happening. I’m on the fence about this at this moment in time, because the original film that was directed by John Landis and starred Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, and James Earl Jones, amongst a ton of other great actors is one of the funniest films ever made with a ton of heart. Doing a sequel so many years later – – I have my doubts, since nobody from the original film has signed on yet.

Film Review: ‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 20th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

Matthew Vaughn is back in the director’s chair with ‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle‘, the sequel to the hit 2015 action-comedy film that made over $414 million. The ‘Kingsman’ story line was originally written in comic book form from Mark Millar (Kick-Ass) and Dave Gibbons (Watchmen) and follows a super secret British spy service that protects the world from various threats. It’s like James Bond, but more fun, more violent, and with more laughs. With sequels, especially in the action world, the words “bigger, better, faster” are usually used everyday on set, in an attempt to out-do the previous movie. That can mostly be said for this sequel too, but with The Golden Circle – – it all works.

Film Review: ‘American Assassin’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 15th, 2017

Dan M. here…

You can’t make an action movie like this in 2017 and expect anyone to be impressed with it. Not when studios crank out Bourne, Bond, John Wick, Atomic Blonde, The Raid, etc. Those are movies that execute things at such a high level with passable stories that at least allow you to buy into the character. Hell, even Jack Reacher had some self-awareness to it that made the shrug-worthy, ridiculous, sequel mildly enjoyable. American Assassin is an all-around pretty bad movie but it does have a few bright spots. It honestly felt like the writers watched a Bourne movie, then got high, and played 3 hours of Call of Duty on easy difficulty before putting pen to paper.

Blu-ray Review: John Wick 2

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 5th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

THE FILM

Ever since Keanu Reeves jumped into the role of John Wick in 2014, we all have wanted a sequel in the worst way. Filmmakers Chad Stahelski and David Leitch created a monster of a franchise with that film that brought the action genre back to a high point. That first film had a simple story and some of the best action sequences in a long time. Some bad guys steal John Wick’s car and kill his precious puppy dog a few days after his wife dies. Not knowing John Wick is the best assassin in the world, Wick sets out on revenge and literally kills everybody. It was just so good and showed the world what everyone secretly wants to do if some jerk killed your dog. The first film had a modest budget of only $20 million, but ended up making almost $90 million, which leads us to future sequels.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues where the first one left off and despite not being as great as the first one, it is still a worthy sequel that is a blast for the entire run time.

4K UHD Review: 3:10 to Yuma!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 1st, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

THE FILM

Filmmaker James Mangold has certainly made a name for himself in the Western genre of cinema with the likes of 3:10 To Yuma and more recently Logan. The guy knows how to tell a thrilling story set in the old west as we’ve seen before. Prior to this 2007 version of the film, author Elmore Leonard (Jackie Brown, Get Shorty), wrote a short story, which was adapted into a 1957 film called 3:10 To Yuma. Mangold thought it would serve as a great remake in these modern times and he wasn’t wrong, while he added a few new story conflicts to this great 2007 version.

Film Review #2: ‘Logan’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 3rd, 2017

Dan M., here….

thumbnail_25047

Even when the dust settles and recency bias fades, I can’t imagine LOGAN not being considered one of the greatest superhero films of all time. For me, LOGAN is in the same class as Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Spider-Man 1-2, Iron Man, Reeve’s Superman, Burton’s Batman, etc. I believe all of those comic films work as films and stories first, comic fun second. There are plenty of “fun” comic movies I thoroughly enjoy and love but I wouldn’t classify them as well-crafted films. LOGAN is a great story and character arc first and comic fun second. It just works on every level.

Film Review: ‘LOGAN’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 17th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

Screen Shot 2017-02-17 at 11.10.34 AM

For decades now, we have been clamoring for a ‘Wolverine‘ film done right. From his first incarnation in Hulk #181 to his own miniseries in comic book form in the 1980’s by Frank Miller, to the amazing Saturday Morning Cartoon, and his first appearance in a feature film in 2000 with ‘X-Men‘, which had the song and dance man Hugh Jackman play the iconic character. He was so good at playing Logan/Wolverine, that fans immediately took a liking to him as that character and he went on to play the ‘Snikt-y Snikt’ character in almost a dozen more films. Besides the ‘X-Men‘ films, Wolverine got his own set of standalone films, which may or may not have been liked by a lot of people for various reasons. Either the story was too silly or the character Wolverine was to PG for fans.

Before the Rumble match itself, there were several championship matches with interesting outcomes, which should tell the tale of what’s to come at Wrestlemania 33 in April. Now here’s a taste of the good, the bad, and the ugly of the Royal Rumble 2017.

Favorite WWE Matches of 2016!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 31st, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

screen-shot-2016-12-31-at-4-38-29-pm

Yes, there were a list of movies that tickled my fancy and made me laugh, cry, and be scared so badly that I had to sleep with the lights on. That list is HERE for your enjoyment. Moving on from that, if you have ever met me or have perused this site, you would know that I like a bit of the ole Pro-Wrestling just a smidgen. So it wouldn’t ben an end-of-year celebrations without trying to show you or convince you that Pro-Wrestling is the BEST thing in the universe. After all, ‘Wrestling is Everything is Everything’.

This is one of the most fun and highest forms of entertainment on the planet and a lot of the time when I’m at screenings, I wish I were watching some good ole fashioned wrestling matches. I don’t know why, but it must be in my blood. The below matches are for sure my favorite from the WWE company strictly. If I were to do an all encompassing pro-wrestling list, I would be writing this for the next two weeks and “ain’t nobody got time for that.” So I’ll leave the ‘Wrestle Circus‘, ‘VIP Wrestling‘, ‘NJPW‘, ‘ROH‘, ‘PWG‘, and ‘Evolve‘ for another post, although I think Jervis Cottonbelly and Joey Ryan (The King of Dong Style) deserve some recognition as perhaps some of the best talent in the wrestling business. Seriously, look them up.

Also, at the very bottom of this list, I will place a non-WWE match, which is one of the best matches I’ve ever seen in Pro-Wrestling, and it deserves it’s own place and category, because it’s that hardcore, fun, and insane. I highly suggest you give these matches that are listed below a real chance. You’ll see the storyline that is being told in the squared circle, the amount of high voltage entertainment and athleticism that goes on each and every night here. You will certainly enjoy it.

WWE: TLC 2016 in Dallas!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 5th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

WWE has just finished its 8th TLC pay-per-view right here in Dallas, TX. No, TLC does not mean Tender Loving Care or even the R&B group from the 90s. It stands for Tables-Ladders-Chairs and is considered the “hardcore” PPV of the year for WWE. This was a Smackdown Live brand PPV event where every championship title was on the line. Between chair matches, ladder matches, table matches, and an all-encompassing TLC match to end the night, it’s no doubt that each and every superstar will be sore for next few days after all of their bodies were flung into these steel and wooden pieces of furniture. The event took place at American Airlines Center in Dallas, TX to a big crowd, however it was far from a sell-out. That didn’t stop the crowd from cheering and booing their favorite superstars at all, even though it wasn’t as crazy a crowd as ‘Wrestlemania 32‘.
