‘Dumbo’ (2019) – Film Review!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 26th, 2019

“This is the worst film of the year or at least most disappointing.”

In 1941, Disney wasn’t doing too well financially. It was the success of a short 64 minute animated movie about an elephant who could fly that would launch Disney back into the successful realm of cinema. Since then, this film called ‘Dumbo‘ has brightened our days throughout the years, made us sing along to its original and amazing songs, and fall in love over and over with each viewing with the titular character ‘Dumbo‘. It was a simple story about a newborn elephant with large ears. All of the other animals and humans at the circus made fun of Dumbo, which caused his mother to protect him, thus forcing her to leave Dumbo and be locked up because she became “dangerous”. Turns out, Dumbo could fly with the help of his mouse friend and became the star of the circus, eventually living a life of luxury and reuniting with his mother. It’s a beautiful story for sure with a couple of thought-out, well designed characters.

Fantastic Fest is one of the events that is pure bliss for any fan of genre cinema. If you love horror, sci-fi, foreign, action, and even adult-oriented movies from the 1970s, then Fantastic Fest is the place to let that freak flag fly high and be with like-minded individuals that truly appreciate the art of movies. All of the madness and fun will take place in Austin, TX starting on September 20th and run for 10 days at the Alamo Drafthouse on South Lamar St. This year, which is the 14th annual festival of Fantastic-ness, captures the essence of the Korean movie scene with a ton of cool films being showcased from Korea, both new and old. This is something you won’t want to miss.

The first wave of movies has been announced, including the World Premiere of the WWII horror movie called ‘OVERLORD‘ from J.J. Abrams. In addition to that film, Fantastic Fest will host Gareth Evans‘ horror movie ‘APOSTLE‘. Gareth gave us the amazing films ‘THE RAID‘ AND ‘THE RAID 2‘, so you can expect some insane fight scenes and horrific imagery. Alos, a film called ‘THE NIGHT COMES FOR US‘, which stars the badass from those ‘RAID‘ movies will be shown, meaning Iko Uwais will stun us once again with his amazing physical skills. If you were a fan of ‘THE GREASY STRANGLER‘, the director of that movie Jim Hosking has a new film called ‘AN EVENING WITH BEVERLY LUFF LINN‘, which is being described as a David Lynch meets John Waters type of movie. You had me at Greasy Strangler.

Lastly, there are some vintage films coming through from AGFA (American Genre Film Archive), one of which has peaked my interest from the title alone – ‘MARY JANE’S NOT A VIRGIN ANYMORE‘. I have high hopes for this one. Below is the list of films with cast and crew info, along with a brief synopsis. Enjoy and hope to see you all there.

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 21st, 2018

I took my wife to ‘Jaws‘ on the Water last night presented by Alamo Drafthouse’s Rolling Roadshow. Before I even got invited to this I knew Drafthouse was the best theater chain in America when it comes to putting on the best presentation. Now after attending this event, I can confirm they are the best chain in the World.

Film Review: ‘[Girls Trip]’!!

by Janet White on Jul 22nd, 2017

Hello Everyone, Janet W. here…

We’ve seen this storyline before. Four friends come together, experience a separation, reconnect and hijinks abound. In Girls Trip, Ryan (Regina Hall), Lisa (Jada Pinkett Smith), Sasha (Queen Latifah), and Dina (Tiffany Haddish) met in college, became the Flossy Posse and were thick as thieves. Then life happened and disrupted their efforts to stay close. An opportune event, New Orleans’ Essence Festival, changes all of that…

Blu-ray Review: GET OUT!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 25th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

When you say the name Jordan Peele, you would most likely think of the brilliant comedic stylings of Key and Peele or Peele’s time on MadTV. You might even crack a big smile, thinking of Peele’s recent film Keanu. But I’m willing to bet you wouldn’t think of the words “horror maestro” when you see Jordan Peele’s name come across the screen. And that’s exactly what Peele can add to his resume résumé with his new movie Get Out, which he wrote and directed for the genre mogul Blumhouse.

Film Review: ‘Devil in the Dark’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 6th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

Screen Shot 2017-03-06 at 4.41.35 PM

Note to self. Why would anyone go camping in the woods anymore? With films like ‘The Blair Witch‘, ‘The Evil Dead‘, ‘The Cabin in the Woods‘, and yes – even ‘Jurassic Park‘ – why would anyone want to subject themselves to monsters, demons, dinosaurs, or a witch? It seems fairly obvious to stay out of the woods for an extended period of time. Just stick to city parks, right? In ‘Devil in the Dark‘, we follow two brothers head out into the British Columbia wilderness for a long hunting trip. Vancouver is a nice city, full of everything you need. Why would anyone venture out into the vast and mysterious wilderness of B.C., even when you’ve had experience with supernatural phenomenons before? This does not stop brothers Clint (Dan Payne) and Adam (Robin Dunne) from taking that trek into the woods.
