Hey guys, Jana here,

Rowling_Teleread

Oh, Potter-heads do we have something awesome being sent down from Queen Rowling, personally! It’s not a new book like we all dream of, as our house-elves tuck us in each night. It’s not a new movie, which we can all agree, even Grawp, that they don’t hold a candle to the novels anyway, so that’s ok. What we will have is a play titled ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child‘ and it will open in London’s West End next year.

JK Rowling’s world of witchcraft and wizardry lent itself, seamlessly, as the ingenious backdrop for three young, bright and shining, hopeful actors to find the voices of the most-beloved characters that lived inside of each one of them. Today, that world will take an established thespian, Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne (‘Les Miserables’) and expand the world of Harry Potter to include the author of one of Harry, Ron and Hermione’s textbooks ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them‘.

Harry Potter Returning, But Who Will Play Him?!??

by Red Zeppelbon on Apr 1st, 2015

Hey guys, Jana here,

5285__benedict-cumberbatch_-an-edit-a-day-benedict-cumberbatch-396-

If you’ve missed Hogwarts as much as I have, prepare to contain the squeals of joy that will undoubtedly emit from the deepest spot in your soul when you read the next line. BBC is producing a Harry Potter story unlike we’ve ever seen before. The plan is to have a two hour movie that takes place after the main characters we’ve loved so much have left Hogwarts. Remember at the end of ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2‘ when we saw our heroes later in life all taking their kids to the train station to begin their school careers? THAT is where this film will pick up!!!

You thought the world of ‘Harry Potter‘ was over, didn’t you? Well of course it isn’t. Those books and movies are too popular and make tons of money for them to call it quits. Hell, there is even a theme park now dedicated to the world of ‘Harry Potter‘. Not too mention all of the spin-off books from the series. And that’s where our story comes into play. Warner Bros. and author J.K. Rowling are putting a brand new epic film series together based on the ‘Harry Potter‘ world.

I am just loving these musician documentaries.  The first half of the George Harrison doc has been amazing.  Looking forward to the second part tonight.  And now  Harry Belafonte is getting a documentary on his life and career.  Most of you might know Belafonte as the guy who sang ‘The Banana Boat Song’ which features the lyric “DAY-O”.  It was featured in the film ‘Beetle juice’.  I’m very excited for this doc as I am a huge fan of Belafonte.  I remember watching the making of Michael Jackson’s ‘We are the World’ music video and during the rehearsal, all of the singers and musicians just randomly started singing ‘The Banana Boat Song’ along with Harry Belafonte himself.  It was magical.

The Hope of ‘Star Wars’!

A Retrospective Look Back at the year 2007 in Movies!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 20th, 2017

Written by: Dan Moran

It has been a decade since we have had an overwhelmingly great year of movies. There have been some ‘great movies’ for sure, that have been released since 2007, but a collective year of dominance like 2007 hasn’t been experienced in 10 years. We have to start with the films that people still talk about today from 2007. No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood, & Zodiac. I mean what a Top 3 for one calendar year!  The closest we got to this was in 2015 when the Top 3 was, Mad Max: Fury Road, Mad Max: Fury Road, & Mad Max: Fury Road.

4K UHD Review: ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 15th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

THE FILM

Things are not looking up for Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) in this third installment of Suzanne Collins‘ young adult book series ‘The Hunger Games‘. In an effort to squeeze as much money as they can, the movie studio decided to split the third and final book into two parts, much like the last two ‘Harry Potter‘ films and the recent trilogy of the single book of ‘The Hobbit‘. On one hand, the fans will get two movies. On the other hand, there will be a lot of filler between these two films to stretch them out to their two-hour run time.

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

Grab your wands, spell books, wizards and witches, because the world of ‘Harry Potter‘ is back for the long haul with J.K. Rowlings‘ book ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to find Them‘. This film is the first in a set of five upcoming movies and begins with a good amount of character introductions, but not necessarily origin stories. Instead of taking place in a somewhat modern day London or even that of the magical place of Hogwarts, ‘Fantastic Beasts‘ takes place in the 1930s in New York, which is around the same time that King Kong would have been climbing buildings. So before Harry Potter himself was even born, this whole fantastic tale took place, which follows a young man named Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) who travels from England to the USA to release a beast of a bird in Arizona to be free. Scamander is a bumbling and clumsy young man, so it’s easy to see how and why he would lose his literal briefcase full of beasts out on New York, which is the main stage and story for the film.

Film Review: ‘The Legend of Tarzan’!!

by Janet White on Jun 30th, 2016

Hello Everyone, Janet W. here…

Tarzan - Brothers

Every woman loves the strong and silent type, yes? Well, I say only for a while. Women are more than their looks and I’d say the same in regards to men. Both sides have bad apples, but on the whole, our actions and words are as integral to who we are as our appearance. Yet in The Legend of Tarzan’s portrayal of Tarzan, silence dominates and makes this King of Beasts a robot, not just mute, but cold and detached for the majority of the film. They should have subtitled the film, “A Man of Few Words”, because The Legend of Tarzan, starring Alexander Skarsgård as Tarzan/Lord John Clayton was just that.

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 16th, 2015

Rebecca S., Here…

cdn.indiewire

Brooklyn” is a sweet look at life in a 1950’s version of the borough for a young Irish immigrant. Saoirse Ronan plays Eilis, a naïve girl sent to America to find a better future and a life away from her small town with her devoted sister, played by Fiona Glascott.  While that is the over-all story being told here, it is also a story of a girl who meets boy. The movie itself is gorgeous and every location feels authentic, however the film drags in certain places, making it easy for the mind to wander at times.

by Red Zeppelbon on Jun 25th, 2015

Hey guys, Jana here,

Emma-Watson-image-emma-watson-36677313-3500-2332

Dave Eggers, the scriptwriter and novelist that shares 2nd place of an IFJA Award with Spike Jonze for the script of ‘Where The Wild Things Are‘ has a few pieces of literature he authored that are being retooled for the big screen. Among the titles are ‘Zeitoun‘, ‘A Hologram For The King‘, and ‘The Circle‘. There is one thing Hologram and The Circle have in common besides the same writer and that’s mega-star, Tom Hanks.

Film Review: ‘Poltergeist 2015’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 22nd, 2015

Janet W., Here…

Poltergeist-2015-trailer-image-3

Horror, according to Webster: Something that causes feelings of fear, dread, and shock.

Someone should have enlightened the production team of this definition prior to their exploring the “re-imaging” (not remake) of this staple of the horror film genre.  I would not expect real horror in this film.  You will get a Scary Movie version of cheesy horror.  Everything in the 2015 version of Poltergeist is topsy-turvy from its 1982 predecessor.  The Freelings (1982) give way to the Bowens (2015).  Fear, suspense, and horror give way to one-liners and gratuitous special effects.

Hey guys, Jana here,

The world of Harry Potter was huge when it consisted of seven of the greatest children’s books to have ever been written, it expanded to depths no one could have predicted when Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint embodied Harry, Hermione and Ron on the big screen, and now J.K. Rowling is expanding the world once again.

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 13th, 2015

Janet W., Here…

ella-and-the-prince-in-cinderella-2015-movie-wallpaper_1660098631

We all know the story of Cinderella.  A kind and sweet young woman loses her parents and is stuck with a horrid stepmother and two selfish personified stepsisters.  They make her a slave in her own home.  The beauty of the fairy tale was that despite her circumstance Cinderella remained her wonderful self and blessed with her dream in the loving arms of the prince.  Amidst this story is the magical presence of loveable mice and Cinderella’s fairy godmother.

Hello ladies! Look at your man, now back to me – whoops, sorry about that. As you know, it’s Valentine’s Day once again. And as this overly-commercialized excuse for a holiday rears its ugly head, we take a reflective look back at our lives and at the choices we’ve made concerning our relationships. Some of you will realize that maybe the gap-toothed ex-con biker named “Bubba” might not have been the best choice for a mate (“but he’s a real sweetheart once you get to know him!”). Unfortunately, now you’re “in like Flynn” with his whole clique, and before you know it, you’re drinking homemade moonshine with the rest of his recently released buddies in the middle of backwoods nowhere (if you hear banjos – run). That isn’t to say that everyone makes bad decisions. Some women seem to have a gift for finding the right people to surround themselves with – or have a real knack for how to handle the bad apples that come along – and that can make all the difference between a smooth sailing adventure and a total train wreck experience.

Top 10 Books That Need To Become Movies!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jan 10th, 2015

Hey guys, Jana here,

bookstack

I love to be entertained, whether it’s watching a great movie, ballgame, series, listening to Led Zeppelin or reading a book, I always have at least two of them going at once. Reading gets a lot of time and attention from me, so it stands to reason that I would have a list of favorite books, not just favorites that I love to read, but favorite titles that should be given the big screen treatment.

Blu-Ray Releases for January 6th, 2014

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 6th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan  Here…

blu-ray

It’s been a long while since I’ve done a Blu-ray column for the site. Hell, it might be two years since the last Blu-ray release column was released here. But I figure since it’s 2015 and there aren’t any apocalyptic scenarios or a rat infestation in the house yet, so now must be as good a time as any to start this fun column back up. As usual in this article, you will get some info about the disc and the extras that come with the movie as well as a personal opinion about the movie and a picture-link to purchase the film over at AMAZON where you can save quite a bit of money, and it will give a small percentage kick back to this site so we can continue bringing you excellent stories and bizarre tales. So click on the pictures and start saving.

Hey guys, Jana here,

Premiere Of FX's "American Horror Story: Coven"

In the wake of wickedly successful series like ‘Game of Thrones‘ that prove period pieces are bankable projects, BBC has set the cast for their newest series epic, ‘The Last Kingdom‘. Bernard Cornwell is the author of at least 8 novels that comprise ‘The Saxon Stories‘, the first in the series being ‘The Last Kingdom‘. The series is a continuing historical novel about 9th and 10th century Britain. We meet Uhtred Ragnarson, born a Saxon then kidnapped by raiding Danes who raise him from the age of 10, teaching him how to be a warrior. When his Danish father is killed, Uhtred joins King Alfred of Wessex. The series takes history and slightly embellishes events, details and people, so that what is presented is not a straight true historical story, but a marriage of historical fact and fictional characters.

‘Dragonwolf’ Blu-Ray Review!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Nov 20th, 2014

Hey guys, Jana here,

51myx4irw-L

THE FILM

Dragonwolf‘ is a typical martial arts film in a lot of ways. If you want something slightly entertaining with fight scenes, this will do nicely. If you’re hell-bent on seeing quality fights, pick up a Bruce Lee flick. Watching this made me so sad though, I really wanted to like this. The finished product doesn’t even deserve an entry to my ‘Eh’ category. You know what I mean, “Hey ‘Dragonwolf‘ is on, wanna watch it?” “Eh, why not?”

Film Review: ‘Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 20th, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

the-hunger-games-mockingjay-part-1-jennifer-lawrence1-600x360

Things are not looking up for Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) in this third installment of Suzanne Collins‘ young adult book series ‘The Hunger Games‘. In an effort to squeeze as much money as they can, the movie studio decided to split the third and final book into two parts, much like the last two ‘Harry Potter‘ films and the recent trilogy of the single book of ‘The Hobbit‘. On one hand, the fans will get two movies. On the other hand, there will be a lot of filler between these two films to stretch them out to their two-hour run time.

First I would like to apologize for the delay in reporting, but you know, Halloween isn’t just one day. It’s a month long celebration of costumes and shenanigans, as well as my favorite time of year. Dallas Comic Con’s Fandays fell on the third weekend in October this year. by Red Zeppelbon on Nov 1st, 2014

Hey guys, Jana here,

Halloween is in the air, which brings to mind all of the ghosties, goblins and furry beasties. Werewolves have been neutered in mainstream media lately. All you have to do is check out a ‘Twilight’ flick to see the new lows the monsters have come to. That is what they used to be – monsters – they’ve been romanticized the way vampires always have been and it’s changed the way I perceive them and I hate that.

TV Review: ‘Peaky Blinders’!!

Hey guys, Jana here,

peaky-blinders-fin_2705945b

I’m an addict. When I see a new TV series that I fall in love with, I marathon every episode until I reach the end, or a cliffhanger. Both of those conditions were incredibly true for my newest addiction – ‘Peaky Blinders‘. ‘Peaky Blinders‘ falls into one of my favorite topics when it comes to what I’m watching and it’s all about mafia. The show was produced by BBC and aired the first season beginning in September of last year. Then Netflix entered the equation by acquiring exclusive US distribution rights from the Weinstein Company and Endemol. It became available for streaming on September 30, 2014. Look it up, add it to your list and enjoy. It’s absolutely brilliant!

You Must Watch The ‘What If’ Trailer!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 3rd, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

What-If-600x650

Mark the movie ‘What If‘ at the top of my list of movies to see this year. This trailer is great. ‘What If‘ is a romantic comedy starring Daniel Radcliffe (‘Harry Potter’), Zoe Kazan (‘Ruby Sparks’), Adam Driver (‘Girls’), and Rafe Spall (‘Hot Fuzz’). It’s a story we’ve seen before, but this looks like it’s done perfectly. Basically, Radcliffe plays Wallace who falls in love with a new girl named Chantry (Kazan), but quickly finds out she has a boyfriend. So it’s kind of a wrong-place, wrong-time type scenario.

Film Review: ‘Mr. Peabody and Sherman’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 6th, 2014

Rebecca S., Here….

When I was a little girl, I would snuggle up on the couch with my dad and watch reruns of his favorite cartoon, Rocky and Bullwinkle. He would tell me all about “moose and squirrel”, Boris and Natasha, George of the Jungle, and Dudley Do-Right… but the one I loved best was Peabody’s Improbable History. It was clever, snarky, educational in the worst way, and full of horribly great puns (which I am still a sucker for). I was worried when going to see the new DreamWorks (Shrek, How to train your Dragon) movie Mr. Peabody and Sherman, that it would not live up to the kitschy cool of the original 5 minute shorts. I was pleasantly surprised to find a smart, fun movie that kept the cool (and the horribly great puns).

Now that I know there is a 3D live-action version of ‘Tarzan‘ going full speed ahead starring the Swedish bombshell, I’m more than a little excited about the idea of Skarsgard appearing on screen most of the time sporting only a loincloth. Showtime Announces Two New Series!!

I love watching premium network series. It started with ‘The Sopranos‘. I was absolutely fascinated by how many times they cursed, how much violence it showed, and don’t forget all the T&A in the sex scenes! I should also include the story line arcs that I never wanted to end, as well. I just couldn’t believe this wasn’t a stand alone movie, but a series I got to watch every week! As time went by I had my attention divided to include ‘Big Love‘, ‘Weeds‘, ‘Nurse Jackie‘, ‘Dexter‘….and on and on and on. I’ve spoken with many people about their thoughts on seeing ‘R.I.P.D.‘ this weekend, and 9 out of 10 of them have said it looks terrible. In addition, I’ve heard a lot of studio people talking how this summer blockbuster that cost an estimated $130 million won’t even top out at $15 million this weekend. It’s a tough call as several movies come out this weekend, including a horror film that’s been generating a lot of good buzz. ‘R.I.P.D.‘, which is based on a Dark Horse comic series was surprisingly a lot of fun. Sure, it was silly stupid fun, but none-the-less, entertaining.

Well, here is the new poster for ‘The Hangover III‘, which is set to release on May 24th. From the looks of this, Las Vegas is in for one wild and destructive time.  Plus it reminds me of Warner Bros.‘ ‘Harry Potter‘ posters.  Synopsis: “The Hangover Part III” is the third and final film in director Todd Phillips’ record-shattering comedy franchise. This time, there’s no wedding. No bachelor party. What could go wrong, right? But when the Wolfpack hits the road, all bets are off. So, i guess this will be the last film of the series. That is until warner decides to reboot it in a few years with a different cast. Looks epic.

Film Review: ‘Hansel and Gretel’

by Woozie on Jan 25th, 2013

Hi, Suzanne here,

Screen shot 2013-01-25 at 7.20.46 AM

Most people hold special nostalgia for the fairytales they grew up with, making new spins on these classic stories difficult to handle. Many fail by adding too much to the original story, and while Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters doesn’t really succeed, it actually does well to not take itself too seriously and pay homage to the tale, using it as a launchpad for a continuation of the gruesome Grimm Brothers tale. Though not a movie that will become anyone’s favorite or have much of a shelf life past 2013, it’s a good time for those who like to enjoy rolling their eyes at camp movies.
