Film Review: ‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 20th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

Matthew Vaughn is back in the director’s chair with ‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle‘, the sequel to the hit 2015 action-comedy film that made over $414 million. The ‘Kingsman’ story line was originally written in comic book form from Mark Millar (Kick-Ass) and Dave Gibbons (Watchmen) and follows a super secret British spy service that protects the world from various threats. It’s like James Bond, but more fun, more violent, and with more laughs. With sequels, especially in the action world, the words “bigger, better, faster” are usually used everyday on set, in an attempt to out-do the previous movie. That can mostly be said for this sequel too, but with The Golden Circle – – it all works.

Hey guys, Jana here,

Guess who’s back, back again? No, it’s not Slim Shady, it’s Kingsman. In round two, ‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle‘, director Vaughn gathered some of the usual gentleman, like Taron Egerton, Mark Strong and, yes – Colin Firth. He’s combined it with a healthy dose of American badass in the form of Channing Tatum, Halle Berry, Pedro Pascal, and Jeff Bridges to bring us a new adventure I can’t wait to feast my eyes on.

Amazon is continuing to make strides in their original comedy series offerings. Amazon is not new to the comedy game with strong foot holds in the genre with original hits like ‘Transparent‘, ‘Mozart In The Jungle‘, ‘One Mississippi‘, and ‘Catastrophe‘. These just aren’t fan favorites, but have been lauded by critics and their peers as well with Golden Globe and Emmy awards. For the new comedy, there were two names that propelled Amazon into action: Danny DeVito and Jeff Goldblum.

Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn are ‘Snatched’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 7th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

thumbnail_25315

There is a new trailer for a movie called ‘Snatched‘, which stars Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn as mother and daughter who vacation in the tropics together, but somehow end up “snatched” and kidnapped by some evil people. So Goldie Hawn came out of retirement to do this movie? It’s been 15 years since we last saw Goldie in a film, but I guess she is passing the torch to Amy Schumer here. The film is directed by Jonathan Levine who made ‘50/50‘, ‘Warm Bodies‘, and ‘The Night Before‘.

by Janet White on Jan 27th, 2017

Hello Everyone, Janet W. here…

A prospector… Gold Rush pioneers or Yosemite Sam have nothing on the belief of Kenny Wells (Matthew McConaughey). Kenny comes from a prestigious line of miners. Repeatedly shunned by many investors, he hunted for new opportunities to pump life back in the Washoe name. All Kenny had in the world was Kay (Bryce Dallas Howard) who gives new meaning to the phrase “stand by your man.” Suddenly, Kenny sees the pathway to his future in a dream. Along with the scientific expertise of Mike Acosta (Edgar Ramírez), Washoe’s blood turns red and hot. Read the rest of this entry »

Interesting news is afoot with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (This is the End, Preacher). The writing/directing duo purchased the rights to the ‘Where’s Waldo‘ franchise back in 2011 and it looks like MGM is ready to greenlight a live action version of it. You remember ‘Where’s Waldo‘ – the guy in the striped wool hat that is dressed in red, white, and blue, with glasses that you spent hours looking for in many books. The screenplay is written by Kyle Hunter and Ariel Shaffir, who according to Deadline have been taken under the wings of Goldberg and Rogen for some time now.

And if does win, we all go streaking. That being said…I can’t believe that ‘Me and Earl and the Dying Girl‘ was not nominated for anything. Come on. It’s one of the BEST films of the year. It’s also interesting to see no love for the final season of ‘Mad Men’ her either. Oh well.

I have seen films about the Holocaust and the invasion of countries by the Nazi regime.  Along comes Woman in Gold a true story about one woman’s fight against Nazi-sympathizing Austria.  Mrs. Maria Altmann (Helen Mirren) loses her sister and within her sister’s belongings finds a postcard of Gustav Klimt’sWoman in Gold” painting.  Shortly after this find, Austria announces their intent to restore stolen artwork to their rightful owners namely the Jewish families who were robbed by the Nazis when they invaded Austria.  Randy (Ryan Reynolds) is a down on his luck attorney who failed at his solo practice.

Director John Madden and his writer Ol Parker are back for this second trip to India with more or less the same tropes and conflicts from the first outing. ‘The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel‘ won’t change the game or genre, but it’s still filled with enough charm and laughs to satisfy you through its 122 minute run-time. Console Wars

Blake Harris has a new novel dropping in May of this coming year entitled ‘Console War‘. Sony Pictures has already snapped up the feature rights from Atlantic Books. The behind-the-scenes business thriller that chronicles how Sega, a small, scrappy gaming company led by an unlikely visionary and a team of rebels, took on the juggernaut Nintendo and revolutionized the video game industry. Culminating in a David and Goliath face-off. The battle was vicious, relentless, and highly profitable, eventually sparking a global corporate war that would be fought on several fronts: from living rooms and schoolyards to boardrooms and Congress. It was a once-in-a-lifetime, no-holds-barred conflict that pitted brother against brother, kid against adult, Sonic against Mario, and the US against Japan.Atlantic will publish ‘Console Wars: Sega, Nintendo and the Battle that Defined a Generation’ in August.

The Golden Globes were last night and Tina Fey and Amy Poehler killed it. They were amazing.  Even former president Bill Clinton showed up to talk about Spielberg’s ‘Lincoln‘.  Even though I really liked the film ‘Argo‘, I was shocked when it won best film and director for Ben Affleck. I was happy to see ‘Django Unchained‘ win for best supporting actor for Christoph Waltz and screenplay for Tarantino. If this is any pre-cursor to the Oscars, I’d be completely let down if ‘Argo‘ takes it all.  Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great film, but not the best film of the year.  I expect it to and want it to win the best adapted screenplay.  Just my opinion.  Below are the full results from last night’s show.

Hi Bryan Here…

I want you all to give a warm welcome to Boomstick’s new contributing writer, Dr. Joel Hawkins.  He hails from the underground sewers of North Texas and is at least two of the following: gay robot, french polynesian eskimo, slovakian zombie, green blooded canadian, and avatar.  His favorite color is rainbow and when he is not eating cake covered in lucky charms, he is a master at slaying dragons and writing articles about films, television, and music.  Welcome Dr. Joel Hawkins.

Matthew Vaughn (Kick Ass, X-Men: First Class) has a new adventure he’d like to take now that he’s left the School of the Gifted.  Unaware as to whether he’ll direct or produce, Vaughn shared a dream of his with Deadline of hoping to invite Clint Eastwood, Warren Beaty, and Jack Nicholson back to “the lead again” instead of the supporting roles they’ve played so much lately.

Film Review: ‘Hotel Artemis’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 8th, 2018

Writer Drew Pearce, best recognized for Iron Man 3 (2013) and Mission ImpossibleRogue Nation (2015), has entered his first directorial credit into the heated competition of summer blockbusters. Set up with a unique concept of a secret hotel/emergency-room for criminals in futuristic Los Angeles, ‘Hotel Artemis’ sounds promising on paper, right? But upon execution, the result is a mediocre thriller whose only saving grace is the appearance of Jeff Goldblum and a few comical one-liners from supporting cast.

4K UHD Review: ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 1!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 7th, 2018

THE SERIES

HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones’ series is one of the better series to come out in the last 20 years.  Based on the books by George R.R. Martin, which are called ‘A Song of Fire and Ice’, this series adaptation is top notch in every aspect.  If you haven’t seen HBO’s ‘ Game of Thrones’ or read George R.R. Martin’s novels, then I highly suggest you do a few things.  First, purchase this 4K UHD set.  It will be one of the best purchases you will make this year so far.  Second, set your DVR’s to record the last season coming up in a few months.  And third, get the books, because they are truly a great read.  This is one of the best HBO series to have ever been aired and it will sorely be missed when it’s gone.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 25th, 2018

THE FILM

There is always hope for a new ‘Star Wars‘ movie. Two years ago with ‘The Force Awakens‘, Disneyand JJ Abrams reinvigorated the franchise into becoming the #1 movie of all time. Not only was it financially successful, but it brought a new love to the film series, since the prequels almost destroyed all that ‘Star Wars‘ had built up since 1977. It was a new day in the ‘Star Wars‘ universe with new characters crossing paths with our favorite original characters, which made our collective nerdy hearts soar with happiness and nostalgia.

4K UHD Review: ‘Justice League’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 13th, 2018

THE FILM

(This film portion was written by Dan Moran)

There are several things about Justice League that are good. I think the cast is terrific. Gal GadotBen AffleckJason Momoa, and Ezra Miller are great in their roles. They each have a character moment (earned or not) that makes me interested in seeing their next solo adventure. DC/WB has put some talented filmmakers in charge of the next slate of movies. Justin Lin doing Aquaman sounds great, Patty Jenkins taking Wonder Woman on her next adventure, and Matt Reeves writing and directing The Batman. These are world-class filmmakers who have a great actor in the title role and hopefully that leads to some great story telling. I have no idea who is directing The Flash but I did enjoy him as the comic relief character in Justice League and would like to see if he is more than that in the future. Even Henry Cavill’s “new” Superman was delightful as he is reborn in this film and is no longer a whiney douchebag with terrible parents. Man of Steel 2 is actually on my radar now! But those are the nicest things I can say about Justice League. I loved the cast and I look forward to their solo adventures because having them all together in whatever Justice League was/is/supposed to be was a horrific insult to the fans of DC and moviegoers in general.

4K UHD Review: ‘Thor: Ragnarok’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 26th, 2018

THE FILM

Thor is starring in his third stand-alone film called ‘Thor: Ragnarok‘ and brings a much needed change to the character in the best possibly way. Thor now has a fun personality and great comedic timing, mostly due to Chris Hemsworth amazing acting chops here. In addition to that, the film is steeped in a hypnotic, yet hyper-active color scheme that looks like Willy Wonka and Andy Warhol got together and decorated a city. In fact, Wonka’s theme ‘Pure Imagination’ is a song that plays in the film. It’s not all cold and stiff dialogue here anymore with brown or earth toned aliens and robots that Thor has to use his hammer to fight. Everyone and everything is covered in bright primary and pastel colors that creates a breath of fresh air in this stale universe. That’s all thanks to filmmaker Taika Waititi for giving his unique vision on this big budget film ($180 million). In previous Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, particularly with Thor, things have been sour and gloomy.

Back in 2013, horror master Stephen King released the novel ‘Doctor Sleep‘, which was his sequel to ‘The Shining‘. It was only a matter of time before we got a movie adaptation of it. Eli Roth (The Bear Jew and director of ‘Cabin Fever‘) has remade the 1974 violent revenge film ‘Death Wish‘. Instead of Charles Bronson, we now have Bruce Willis. This film was originally slated to release in theaters over the Thanksgiving holiday of last year, but the studio decided to push it now to March 2, 2018. The guy behind ‘Narc‘, ‘Smoking Aces‘, and ‘The Grey‘ (Joe Carnahan) has written the screenplay too. ‘The Killing of a Sacred Deer’ is coming to Blu-ray!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 2nd, 2018

One of my favorite and Top movies of 2017 is coming to Blu-ray on January 23rd. Of course, I’m talking about ‘The Killing of a Sacred Deer‘ from director Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster). The film stars Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman, and Barry Keoghan. I have described this movie as a sibling to Stanley Kurbick’s film ‘Eyes Wide Shut‘, because of the glaring similarities. Not only is it similar, but it’s a damn good film that stays with you long after you watch it. There looks to be only one extra here and no 4K UHD release yet, but let’s hope that changes. I can’t wait to watch this again and  relive the awkwardness and suspenseful situations this movie delivers.

Jana’s Best of 2017!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jan 1st, 2018

Hey guys, Jana here,

I know these “Best of 2017” lists should technically be published in 2017, but why would I start 2018 any differently than I lived the majority of my adult life: Procrastinating and underachieving. What can I say? That’s my wheelhouse.

For a year that put a spotlight on some of the shittiest behavior by some of the Hollywood elite, it was actually a good year for TV and movies. I didn’t limit myself in number because as I moved on with the brackets, I felt like I was making ‘Sophie’s Choice‘ on some of these, so they’re all getting in! I’m feeling my inner-Oprah here, You’ve made the list! You made the list! EVERYBODY made the list!! In order to spare myself any arguments, I’m stating up front that my picks for the “Best of 2017” are not edited in regards to scandal or hideous human behavior.

Favorite Movies of 2017!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 27th, 2017

Was 2017 a great year for movies? Of course it was. There were some excellent films to be released in 2017. There were also some bad ones for sure, but the focus on this article are some of the Best films that stuck with me long after viewing. Most people will give you their Top 10 list, but this is no Top 10, because there are just so many movies that I loved and feel passionate about, that I find it difficult and unpleasing to rank them.

Instead, these are my favorite movies of 2017, which I hope you’ve seen already. If you haven’t yet, you’re in for a real treat and I can’t wait for you to see them. Some of these films are still in theaters, while some are on Netflix, 4K UHD, and Blu-ray, so you’ll be able to quickly see any of these if you haven’t. I watched over 270 movies that were released in 2017 and these are my absolute favorites. I hope you get to see all of these, because I know you’ll love them. In no particular order…..

‘Mama Mia: Here We Go Again’ Sequel is Almost Here!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 21st, 2017

It looks like ‘Mama Mia!‘ is getting the sequel treatment with ‘Mama Mia!: Here We Go Again‘ with everyone returning to their roles. It doesn’t look like Meryl Streep with be the main star here this time, but her and Cher will be seen in the movie. The first film was fun enough and the ABBA music still resonates, but I wonder what music group will be picked this time around. I just hope this isn’t a hasty rehash of the first film.

Blu-ray Review: ‘The Hitman’s Bodyguard’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 22nd, 2017

THE FILM

On paper, ‘The Hitman’s Bodyguard‘ sounds like a solid gold winner. You have Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson in a violent action-comedy with enough “motherfucks” for two films, that is directed by the guy who made ‘The Expendables 3‘ – Patrick Hughes. Those looking for a ‘Deadpool‘ style character from Reynolds will be disappointed, as he’s the straight arrow here, or as straight as Reynolds could possibly be. Samuel L. Jackson on the other hand is amped up to 11, as he plays Kinkaid, an assassin for hire who will testify in a global crime ring against a foreign mad man, played by Gary Oldman, complete with a hard Russian accent.

A Deeper look into the ‘The Holiday’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 21st, 2017

In 2006 a little movie by the name of ‘The Holiday’ was released unto the world from the place where all darkness flows. It now signifies the start of “Holiday Movie Season” for countless women across the globe. I believe it is solely responsible for the Hallmark Channel’s holiday film slate every November-December. However, the imitators don’t even come close to the unique mess this film is. I actually don’t think I’ve seen the movie in one full sitting the past 5 years but it has been in such a rotation in my home that I’ve caught it in enough chunks to have seen it at least 10-12 full times since it came out in 2006. I really want to break down the absurdity of this movie to get everyone in the holiday spirit.

4K UHD Review: Westworld Season 1!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 11th, 2017

THE SERIES

HBO’s new flagship show ‘Westworld‘ entered with a big bang in its first season. Since ‘Game of Thrones‘ is ending soon, HBO was ahead of the game and needed its new sci-fi action original show and ‘Westworld‘ was its name. That rhymed a little bit. Based on Michael Crichton’s story and film from 1973 of the same name, ‘Westworld‘ takes a theme park (much like Disneyland) to the next level. What do I mean by that? Well, let’s say you entered the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean‘ ride at Disneyland.

Film Review #2: ‘Thor: Ragnarok’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 4th, 2017

Taika Waititi legitimately reinvigorated  the marvel brand with Thor: Ragnarok. A lot of the criticism that Marvel movies get is that there are no stakes and we know that the heroes will always win. No kidding? That’s every superhero movie. No one thought Iron Man would die, no one thought Cap would die, no one thought Batman was dead in TDKR, no one thought (cared?) Superman died in BvS. Waititi proves that not taking a paint by numbers destroy the world story too seriously can be a damn blast.

The world of pro-wrestling has been around for many years and has certainly seen its ups and downs, most noticeably being the WWE. There have been many promotions through the decades, which have made a lot of people very successful and it continues to this day. At some point down the road though, there was one company that surpassed everyone by leaps and bounds and brought the pro-wrestling arena into the mainstream. Of course I’m talking about World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), or the artist formally known as World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in its teenage angst years. For a long while, there were two major companies that featured the best of the best in the pro-wrestling world. WWE and WCW. They didn’t play well together at all on and off screen.

Film Review: ‘Mark Felt’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 12th, 2017

Written By: Beka Perlstein

As I watched Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House, I couldn’t help but feel like I was watching a movie about modern day politics. I wasn’t around during the Nixon years, so the story itself was intriguing to me, but as the film played I just became increasingly frustrated that history was seemingly repeating itself. Mark Felt was as they said, “the G-Man’s G Man.” He worked for the FBI for 31 years and it’s made clear at the outset of the film that under Hoover, he was the guy that held the key to Pandora’s Box. Felt knew when to talk, when to keep his mouth shut, when to bark and when to bite. Everyone in Washington knew not to cross him for fear of their secrets leaking. But that wasn’t Mark Felt. He. Did. Not. Leak.

Written By Bryan Kluger:

THE FILM

(This film review portion was written by Dan Moran.)

The fifth installment of Disney’s nearly $4 billion dollar franchise is a Pirates movie through and through. It is about 20 minutes too long, has a needlessly complex plot, fantastic action set pieces, and way too many characters. I found it to be a real roller coaster viewing experience, where some points I was loving every single second of what was on screen and others I wanted to check my phone to see how much longer was left. There were no scenes in this entire movie that I was just ‘Ok’ with. I was either loving it or tolerating it. When it was all over I was pleased with the ending and, more importantly, that it ended.

4K UHD Review: ‘Kick-Ass’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 2nd, 2017

THE FILM

Back in 2008, Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. created a new comic book that was kick-ass, that they in fact named it ‘Kick-Ass‘. It was basically Spider-Man if Spider-Man had no superpowers and was had a hardcore R rating. The amount of creative energy, violence, comedy, and character development that went into the comic was magical as it was entertaining and wonderful. Millar just had a way with words and story plot that made this comic book called ‘Kick-Ass‘ solid gold. It was to nobody’s surprise that only two years later, we got a feature film directed by Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake, X-Men: First Class, Kingsman) and produced by Brad Pitt, that ignited a new breed of R rated superhero films.

The Warner Bros./DC Comics Cinematic Universe has been trying to get off its feet for a while now with no success, besides some decent box office money. Hi everyone, Bryan here….

Again, how old am I? It’s the 25th anniversary of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (The Movie) and is getting a Blu-ray release and for the first time ever – a digital HD release #DigitalVampires.  Joss Whedon sure struck gold with this horror-comedy vampire genre that took place in high school, which spawned one of the best tv shows ever made.
