Film Review: ‘Goodbye Christopher Robin’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 19th, 2017

Written by: Audrey Evans

If asked to refer back to their fondest memories, most adults would likely gloat about experiences from their youth. And honestly, what individual hasn’t reminisced about days of innocence and longed for that childhood comfort of a bedtime story? In ‘Goodbye Christopher Robin,’ we’re given a glimpse into the life and inspiration behind Author A.A. Milne’s book Winnie-the-Pooh – a children’s classic that is collectively referred to as the most cherished of all time. Though true life stories are often challenging to represent, Director Simon Curtis uses his aptitude for history to create an authentic bio-drama that dodges the sentimental distaste of many, and also explores the paramount effects of childhood celebrity and war.

Speaking of movies, Criterion has unveiled the first films they will release for 2018, starting in January, which looks like it’s gonna be BADASS! I mean, are we really getting ‘The Breakfast Club’ on Criterion? YES, yes we are. Does that mean we will get more John Hughes’ films in the future? Let’s hope so. Film Review: ‘American Made’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 29th, 2017

Audrey E., here….

Cocaine is a hell of a drug. Globally, it is the second most popular and in the ’80’s, it was king. And Director Doug Liman wants you to know that one American is partly responsible for not only the narcotic’s rise in popularity, but also for fueling one of the largest cartels in global history. In the new action biopic, ‘American Made‘, Tom Cruise flies high and returns to familiar aviation territory as Barry Seal, a TSA pilot turned drug smuggler. This role really puts Tom back into his adventurous element and is easily one of his best performances in recent memory. He proves that his charm and charisma isn’t lost, and personal judgements aside, sometimes it takes crazy to play crazy.

Goodbye Christopher Robin has a Trailer!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 4th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

Looks like Fox Searchlight made a Winnie the Pooh movie without Winnie the Pooh. Instead, they Star Wars prequel-ed it and are bringing us a film called Goodbye Christopher Robin, which nobody wants to see. The film stars Domhall Gleeson, Margot Robbie, and Kelly McDonald that all takes place before Winnie the Pooh was even a thing. In fact, it’s about creating the honey-loving bear and his friends, along with some boring family love and drama. At least there looks to be some Nam-style war flashbacks. Honestly, I might just take a nap and you all can fill me in on this.

Film Review: ‘Live By Night’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 11th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

I’m a big fan of Ben Affleck. When he stepped into the director’s chair with ‘Gone Baby Gone‘, he showed the world that he was one hell of a filmmaker that had a strong passion for cinema and how it’s made. ‘The Town‘ was also a gritty crime caper that was well shot with excellent performances, which paved the way for Affleck to twin the Oscar for his best directed film to date – ‘Argo‘. When it was announced that Affleck was going to write, direct, and star in ‘Live By Night‘, a prohibition era gangster film with similarities to ‘Goodfellas‘ and HBO’s ‘Boardwalk Empire’, I was extremely excited, because Affleck had not led me astray with his films that he’s directed so far.

Film Review: ‘Sing’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 19th, 2016

Beka P., Here…

sing-3

SING is a film set in a world where animals act just as people do- they dress and talk like we do, they work like we do, they have vices and problems and dreams just like we do. They also have singing competitions like we do, but thankfully this is no American Idol. This film is an absolute delight. Whether you take your kids or go with adults, it’s honestly one of the most enjoyable films I’ve seen all year. Grown men all around me were laughing deep belly laughs, an older woman next to me was singing along, and the kids in the back were giggling with glee. It’s fun for everyone.

Film Review: ‘The Revenant’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 7th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

the-revenant-fn01

Could this finally be the year for Leonardo DiCaprio to take home that Oscar gold? It very well could be for his performance in ‘The Revenant‘. This is a movie that went through a few directors and actors before it landed on the ‘Birdman‘ director Alejandro G. Inarritu and Leo. At one point the studio wanted Park Chan-wook (‘Oldboy‘) to direct Samuel L. Jackson in the film, but that all fell through. Then the film went to John Hillcoat to direct Christian Bale in the film, before landing on Inarritu and DiCaprio.

Best Movies of 2015, According To Jana

Another year has come and gone and brought with it about a billion movies, some were total crap and a waste of time, but others…oh they were worth every bit of time I spent. If you’ve read the books, you knew what was coming in this fourth season of ‘Game of Thrones‘ on HBO, but for most of you, I’d imagine you were quite shocked, which is of course, nothing new in the world of Westeros. So over-the-top comedies and machismo action flicks will not be found as they are created with the intent of being ridiculous.

I love comic books, really I do, but the entertainment world is killing them! Today’s kids probably don’t even realize there were these papers covered in bright colors that told a story through word bubbles and POW’s and ZAP’s, we called them comic books. We used to pick them up and read a story about our favorite supes. Why would anyone pick up a comic book when they can just pull out the movie or series about that hero? The supe up for screen treatment is Supergirl.

It was a huge night for WWE’s developmental brand NXT. NXT Takeover: R Evolution, shown exclusively on the WWE Network (just $9.99 a month if the rumors are true) from Full Sail University in Orlando, FL, was everything a wrestling show should have and could have been. Four times a year,  the NXT Superstars are given the opportunity to showcase their talents live, and last night, they gave everything they had to entertain the fans. The pre show started with sad news as NXT Superstar, Corey Graves, announced his retirement from in ring competition. His reasons being medically based. Did that mean we would no longer see him, hell no, he also announced that he would be debuting that night as an NXT commentator! If you think about superhero television shows, or if you’re like me, you think of the dreck that was ‘Lois and Clark‘, ‘Mutant X‘, or ‘The Tick‘?  If it’s not one of those shows, then it’s probably something equally abysmal. With the resurgence of super-powered peeps making such an excellent showing at the box office – because why would they be creating so frakking many of them if they weren’t making some serious coin? So it stands to reason that the small screen is looking for new hit projects in the same vein.

Hey guys, Jana here,

hemlock-grove

If you haven’t watched ‘Hemlock Grove‘, yet, you’re missing out…or you just don’t have Netflix, either way, you’re missing out!  This series grips you from the first scene and it’s not let up in the two seasons it’s been exclusively on Netflix. In an unsurprising turn, the VOD company has renewed the original series for a 10-episode third season that’s heading out way in 2015.

The twice Emmy nominated thriller has some pretty decent star-power filling out its ranks. Famke Janssen, Bill Skarsgard and Dougray Scott are all featured. Janssen, best known from her days as Jean Grey in the original ‘X-Men‘ franchise, but has come into her own, shall we say, inner-bitch. Her characters are always underhanded, evil or they just want to eat children as in the case of ‘Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters‘ Oh! Don’t forget her absolute lack of concern for her daughter in ‘Taken‘. I adore Liam Neeson, but that movie-wife wanted to carry the testicles of every man she hooked up with in her perfect designer bag.

Film Review: ‘Calvary’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 7th, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

Kelly Reilly and Brendan Gleeson in Calvary

John Michael McDonagh is the older brother of Martin McDonagh (the director of ‘In Bruges‘ and ‘Seven Psychopaths‘). John’s first film was in 2011 and was called ‘The Guard‘, which starred actor Brendan Gleeson who played a police officer. It was a great film. With John’s second film, ‘Calvary‘, which also stars Gleeson, the duo push the bar even further with an exceptionally great film about forgiveness and faith. ‘Calvary‘ has so many layers and perfectly mixes some very emotional segments with some brilliant dark humor, that I feel it needs to be seen by as many people as possible. This is one film that will have you thinking and talking about it for days on end.

You know how One Direction causes pubescent girls across the globe to squeal with glee? Now take that intensity and obsessive behavior and attach it to millions of guys that follow comic books and video games the way a stock trader follows the Nasdaq, then you can understand the genius of Screen Gems bringing out Sam Raimi at Comic-Con today.

Hey guys, Jana here,

American_Psycho_Musical

Ever hear of two things that shouldn’t go together but end up working? A bit of chocolate in your homemade chili, Kevin Youkilis  as a Yankee, Catherine ZetaJones and Michael Douglas? OK, well maybe not them so much, anymore, but you get my point. ‘American Psycho‘ – the book by Bret Easton Ellis that made a 2000 movie with Christian Bale, evolved into a musical? Yup, you read that one right. Off-Broadway theater company, Second Stage is going to present the U.S. premiere. This has been discussed and debated, but ultimately it’s happened and coming to America next!

Film Review: ‘The Grand Seduction’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 11th, 2014

Janet W., Here…

la_ca_0418_the_grand_seduction

The Grand Seduction with Taylor Kitsch sounds yummy, but this film is not that type of party.  In the quaint town of Tickle Head, Newfoundland, the word of the day is “welfare”.  The small harbor is struggling to stay afloat while generation after generation of fisherman had lived and worked in the small town.  Sadly, since the fishing has dried up, the whole town is apparently on welfare.  Their spirit is parched for any sense of self-worth.  Mostly the older generation refused to leave, so when a petrochemical company is looking for a location for their new waste processing plant, the town bands together to get the contract.

Film Review: ‘Edge of Tomorrow’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 5th, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

edgeoftomorrowposter

I’m very glad that the science-fiction genre is back and doing very well these days. The more sci-fi in theaters, the better. And we have what seems a pretty good lineup this summer of movies that involve everything you could want in a science-fiction film. Here to start off June 2014 is ‘Edge of Tomorrow‘, formally titled ‘All You Need Is Kill‘, which is based on the 2004 novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka of the same name. Director Doug Liman (‘Swingers‘, ‘Go‘, ‘The Bourne Identity‘) took a swing at this $178 million dollar budget film and hit a home-run.

Heard About ‘Stage Fright’, The Horror Musical!?!?

by Red Zeppelbon on Feb 6th, 2014

Jana B. here,

Stage Fright

Genre-bending features are not a really new thing. When they’re done right though, we stand up and cheer. Remember ‘Zombieland‘, a grisly zombie flick that made us scream – with laughter? ‘The Cabin in the Woods‘, ‘Shaun of the Dead‘, ‘Rocky Horror Picture Show‘? If the movie can be categorized by more than one descriptor, it’s a genre-bender. ‘Rocky Horror Picture Show’ for example can go into Sci-Fi, Comedy, Musical and Horror categories. After all that explanation, I can tell you that I am excited for the release of the horror comedy musical, ‘Stage Fright‘.

‘Mortal Kombat’ Movie Loses Director!!

Kevin Tancharoen, the director that had a new generation excited for another live action ‘Mortal Kombat‘ movie, has decided he’s seen enough of the fight scene.  “After 3 years of Kombat, I’ve decided to move on to other creative opportunities. I wish everyone involved in the movie big success,” Tancharoen Tweeted Friday. His departure comes after he directed the popular and widely viewed 10 episode web series, ‘Mortal Kombat: Legacy‘. Besides spending time caught up in the world of Scorpion, Sub-Zero and Raiden, he also directed the reboot of ‘Fame‘ and ‘Glee‘: The 3D Concert Movie.

I never thought I’d write this sentence, but Arnold Schwarzenegger is currently in talks to star in the reboot of Troma’sToxic Avenger’ film. This project will be introduced to potential buys at Cannes this year of all places. I didn’t think Cannes would take any Troma film. But it looks like this re-imaging of ‘Toxic Avenger‘ will be a big budget project. Steve Pink is taking the reins of the film. Pink directed ‘Hot Tub Time Machine‘ and will direct the sequel. This is odd, but amazing news.

Film Review: ‘Jack the Giant Slayer’!!!

by Woozie on Mar 1st, 2013

Fairytales are always fodder for reinterpretation and expansion in movies. Sometimes they fall flat and sometimes they add to the beloved story we knew as children. The movie Jack the Giant Slayer stays true to the whim and wonder of the original story and adds in a bit more for the modern movie fan.

Elijah Wood Leaves The Shire To Make Horror Films!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Oct 1st, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

Elijah Wood, most known for his role as Frodo, in the Lord of the Rings trilogy has teamed up with Josh C. Waller and Daniel Noah to form  an indie film company called ‘The Woodshed’.  The Woodshed will focus on horror/sci-fi films mostly according to  Deadline.  If this sounds weird to you, it shouldn’t be.  Elijah has been an avid horror and genre fan for a long time.  Don’t forget he was the sadistic killer and cannibal in ‘Sin City’, he was in the horror film ‘The Faculty’, and he is the sinister killer in the remake of ‘Maniac’.  His horror chops are very strong, plus he loves the genre.

2012 Emmy Award Winners!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 24th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

Below is the list of the winners for the 2012 Prime-Time Emmy Award Winners.  I don’t  see how ‘Modern Family’ and ‘Two and Half Men’ win anything.  They shouldn’t win any kind of award when they go up against shows like ‘Mad Men’, ‘Game of Thrones’, and ‘Breaking Bad’.  The Emmy judges need to be fired and never allowed to pick winners ever again.  However, much congratulations to ‘Homeland’, ‘Downton Abbey’, Aaron Paul, ‘Veep’, and ‘American Horror Story’

‘Rocky Horror Picture Show’ Remake: NO. JUST NO!!!

Do you remember the first time you saw The Rocky Horror Picture Show? Walked into a theater, got the red V marked on your forehead, received your baggie containing your tools. The Bishop Charlotte Reporting….

I only have one complaint about The Poe Twisted Anthology. It was a great read, done by groups of terrific artists and writers who really had a handle on the works of Edgar Allen Poe. But (possibly because they have such a good handle) it is not much more twisted than Poe himself, who wrote such macabre works as The Black Cat and The Pit and the Pendulum (which I was surprised to find was not in the anthology.) I think I was sort of expecting to find stories beyond Mr. Poe, and simply found some that were at his level. Not that he didn’t set the bar pretty dratted high.

‘Me and the Devil’

Airdate 7/24/2011

True Blood episode “Me and the Devil”, while good in its own right, was clearly a filler episode. It moved and built up the many story lines that the show is working this season. On that note, it almost feels like the show is trying too hard to keep this many story lines going and keeping them interesting. The episode itself felt rushed and hurried. The transitions from scene to scene were abrupt and not what I’m used to when watching True Blood. Each scene basically gave us 5 minutes with each story line. It was a little on the frustrating side. It was like getting a massage five minutes at a time, when it starts to feel good it changes. But again as a whole I did enjoy the episode. Now on to a re-cap of the story lines!

I always look forward to seeing the next mockumentary Christopher Guest puts out.  He started out with This is Spinal Tap, and brought us other gems as Waiting For Guffman, Best In Show, A Mighty Wind, and For Your Consideration.

While some people didn’t care much for the last film, he still has made some of the funniest films out there with some great music as well.  I for one liked “For Your Consideration”.

Now after hearing this news that his next group of crazies he plans to mock is the group that collects old comic books, vintage records, old barbies and toys, and more.  Already I am laughing out loud at the premise.  Hopefully somebody like Comic-Book Guy from the Simpsons will be in the movie.

Guest will be joined by Harry Shearer and Michael McKean, two actors who have been with him since his Spinal Tap days (which they also co-wrote alongside him). No mention of Eugene Levy, however—though I imagine that he will remain as integral a part of the production as he’s ever been. In addition to starring in Guest’s films, Levy has also helped him write all of their screenplays. It would be regrettable if that wasn’t the case on this film as well.

Other Guest regulars include Jane Lynch, Parker Posey and John Michael Higgins, all of whom are being sought for the film. Lynch’s Glee schedule could pose a problem, but otherwise it’s likely that most of the gang will be returning.

We need Fred Willard, Eugene Levy,  and Catherine O’ Hara to sign on as well.  I am sure they will.

Fat Mancho:
You want a Rolls-Royce, you don't come here, no no. You go to England, or wherever the fuck they make it. If you want champagne, you go see the French. If you need money, you find a Jew. But, if you want dirt, or scum buried under a rock somewhere, or some secret nobody wants anybody to know about, there's only one place to go: right here, Hell's Kitchen.
