May/2018

Hi Bryan Here….

Criterion rolls out the red carpet yet again with the re-release of the instant cult classic ‘Dazed and Confused’.  This time it is on glorious blu-ray.  This movie will live on forever.  There really isn’t another movie like it.  The characters, the music, the dialogue are all quoted and duplicated today.  This film started the careers of tons of big named actors including: Parker Posey, Ben Affleck, Matthew McConaughey, Milla Jovovich, Joey Lauren Adams, and a few others.  This re-release is virtually the same as the previous criterion release, but in blu-ray.  And let me just say, it is worth the upgrade.  The picture and sound are top notch.

Bryan’s Best and Worst of 2014 List!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 22nd, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

Wright_39_s_Top_10_Films_of_2014

I can’t believe how fast this year has gone by. 2014 was an interesting year to say the least, most of which was great. Movie-wise, I think 2014 had some excellent films filling its theaters, but of course it had some real stinkers too. Below is my list of the Best and Worst films of 2014 with some added categories down at the bottom. I believe this year I watched over 145 new films, theatrically speaking and it was very difficult to narrow them down from 25. After some chocolate snacks covered in marshmallow cream, I finally had a TOP 10. But when you talk about the Best movies, you have to mention the worst too. My list tends to be a tad bit different from others, but hey, I’m twisted. I highly encourage you to seek out these movies – good or bad and enjoy the rest of your year.

Hey guys, Jana here,

Lionsgate is prepping the action-packed thriller ‘Acts of Violence‘ for distribution onto Blu-ray, Digital HD, and DVD available on March 27. The high-octane flick stars Bruce Willis (‘Die Hard‘ franchise), Ashton Holmes (‘A History of Violence‘), Shawn Ashmore (‘X-Men 2‘, and TV’s ‘The Following‘), and Cole Hauser (‘2 Fast 2 Furious‘). Hauser will forever be Benny in my mind from 1993’s ‘Dazed and ConfusedSophia Bush (‘John Tucker Must Die‘), and Mike Epps (‘Resident Evil:Extinction‘). Under the direction of Brett Donowho (‘Salvation‘)

‘Last Flag Flying’ waves over Blu-ray!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 14th, 2017

Last Flag Flying‘ is coming to Blu-ray on January 30th and will be available digitally on January 16th. The film is directed by Richard Linklater (Dazed and Confused, Everybody Wants Some, Boyhood) and stars Steve Carell, Bryan Cranston, and Laurence Fishburne, and is based on Darryl Ponicsan’s book of the same name. The movie focuses on three older men who all served in Vietnam together. Fast forward many years later, they are all reunited when one of their son’s has died in the Iraq war and they road trip to bury the fallen. It’s a different kind of movie for sure in Linklater’s list of movies, but he proves that he can tackle any subject, even if it isn’t as silly or fun as the above mentioned films of his. There will be audio commentaries, behind the scenes featurettes, deleted scenes, and more included on this Blu-ray. Below is more information on the release.

Tis the season to be thankful for many things. Family, friends, food, jobs, and Bruce Campbell. It’s Thanksgiving time and we here at Boomstick Comics just love movies. We love everything about them. Even the bad ones. While you’re eating those delicious bites of Turkey, watching ‘Charlie Brown Thanksgiving‘ or the Dallas Cowboys Game, we want to share with you some movies that we are thankful for. These movies have touched us in some way and have helped shaped our creative lives. Maybe this list will inspire you to make your own list and share it with us. These are the movies we are thankful for and dearly love.

Film Review: ‘Gold’!!

by Janet White on Jan 27th, 2017

Hello Everyone, Janet W. here…

Gold - Ramirez, McConaughey & Howard

A prospector… Gold Rush pioneers or Yosemite Sam have nothing on the belief of Kenny Wells (Matthew McConaughey). Kenny comes from a prestigious line of miners. His grandfather founded Washoe Mining Co. and built a sterling reputation until his death. Under Kenny’s leadership, the company suffered a plummet in profits. Repeatedly shunned by many investors, he hunted for new opportunities to pump life back in the Washoe name. All Kenny had in the world was Kay (Bryce Dallas Howard) who gives new meaning to the phrase “stand by your man.” Suddenly, Kenny sees the pathway to his future in a dream. Along with the scientific expertise of Mike Acosta (Edgar Ramírez), Washoe’s blood turns red and hot. Read the rest of this entry »

Favorite Films of 2016!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 30th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

blake-lively-and-the-shark-the-shallows-39717776-1000-544

The end of 2016 is here, which means everyone’s Top 10 list is out already or getting ready to be released. I’m not going to do a Top 10 in order again this year, because there are just so many amazing films I feel so passionate about, that it is difficult to rank them. If you think this is a weak year of films, then you are surely mistaken. I will say that most of the big budget blockbusters this year were duds, but the indie films were nothing short of amazing. So below is the list of films that I truly loved this year. These films will be ones that I watch over and over again, and you should to. I watched 254 films that were released this year (Yes, I counted) and survived to tell the tale. As always, please let me know if any of your favorite films made my list. Enjoy!

You can CLICK the titles of each movie where you can purchase the Blu-rays too. Hooray!

4K UHD Review: ‘Argo’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 8th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

71utvof7u7l-_sl1127_

THE FILM

Ben Affleck’sArgo’ is a brilliantly told film.  Affleck has come a long way since ‘Dazed and Confused’ and ‘Mallrats‘.  In my opinion, Affleck has gotten better with each directorial effort with ‘Gone Baby Gone’, ‘The Town’, and now ‘Argo’, which I think is his best yet.  Not only is ‘Argo’ a great film, it has a smart script, good acting, clever humor in a serious and tragic situation, and impeccable period detail that rivals AMC’s ‘Mad Men’.

Hey guys, Jana here,

PicMonkey Collage

Summer time means a million things to different people, but some things we can all agree on. Cook outs, swimming, catching lightning bugs, camping and baseball. It’s just as pure as mom’s apple pie and the star spangled banner and every spring, a new season swings into action and a new hope is born for your team to be a contender and play through October. The national past time has been the basis for a lot of movies and I’m making some sense of them all with my Top 10 favorite baseball movies.

Film Review: ‘Everybody Wants Some’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Apr 6th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

everybody-wants-some-image1

In my mind, Richard Linklater can do no wrong. He is one of the best filmmakers working today and he continues do break ground with iconic films that will forever be seared into our memory. Recently, his film ‘Boyhood‘ garnered a ton of awards and was a milestone in filmmaking as he took twelve years to film the story of a boy growing up around his broken family. It was one of the best movies of that year. From ‘School of Rock‘ to ‘Bernie‘ to ‘Slacker‘ to the ‘Before‘ trilogy – we’ve seen Linklater grow as a filmmaker and deliver excellent characters and great soundtracks over the years. Perhaps his best known or cult favorite film was from 23 years ago, which of course was ‘Dazed and Confused‘.

Director Richard Linklater has been in the news lately with his Oscar nomination for ‘Boyhood‘, the film that took 12 years to film, before that his name was always hand-in-hand with ‘Dazed and Confused‘ that stunning peek into the last day of school in the 70’s and made names out of Matthew McConaughey and Ben Affleck.

Blu-Ray Releases for January 6th, 2014

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 6th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan  Here…

blu-ray

It’s been a long while since I’ve done a Blu-ray column for the site. Hell, it might be two years since the last Blu-ray release column was released here. But I figure since it’s 2015 and there aren’t any apocalyptic scenarios or a rat infestation in the house yet, so now must be as good a time as any to start this fun column back up. As usual in this article, you will get some info about the disc and the extras that come with the movie as well as a personal opinion about the movie and a picture-link to purchase the film over at AMAZON where you can save quite a bit of money, and it will give a small percentage kick back to this site so we can continue bringing you excellent stories and bizarre tales. So click on the pictures and start saving.

Jana’s Best/Worst of 2014!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Dec 15th, 2014

Hey guys, Jana here,

PicMonkey Collage

It’s been a big year for the entertainment world. Netflix’s initial push to bring movie-theater worthy films straight to streaming customers and bypassing the big screen altogether set off a chain of deals that will take those fresh releases and push them directly into homes allowing us to bypass a $15.00 soda, but denying us the $20.00 popcorn you can only get at the theater. Then came the deluge of series and movies being made for exclusive run with everyone from Netflix, Amazon to Crackle and everything in between. Top that off with the huge breach of privacy Sony experienced. New releases were flooded onto P2P sharing sites and private emails from the film company’s big wigs that show us how the infrastructure of Sony really works, not to mention what those involved really think of some of their superstars.

Film Review: ‘Boyhood’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 17th, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

original

If you’re unfamiliar with the name Richard Linklater, then you’re in for a real treat. Linklater is a Texas filmmaker who is known for making iconic movies in and around Austin and Dallas, Texas. His films include ‘Slacker‘, ‘School of Rock‘, the ‘Before‘ series, ‘Bernie‘, and the iconic and legendary piece of cinema ‘Dazed and Confused‘. But nothing could have prepared us for his newest film called ‘Boyhood‘, which is a cinematic milestone and achievement and something that will be talked about and praised for many years to come.

Film Review: ‘Endless Love’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 13th, 2014

Fernando M., Here…

endless-love-2013-636-370

I just watched a two hour Abercrombie and Fitch commercial disguised as a romance film.  “Endless Love,” contrary to its title, is actually about fleeting and superficial teenage love.  This movie is built for teens; ready to capitalize on their angst, their desire to piss off daddy, and their raging libidos.

Hollywood is Remaking ‘Ben-Hur’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 15th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

MGM is back in business.  With its success from ‘Skyfall‘ and ‘The Hobbit‘, the once bankrupt studio is rolling in the dough and is purchasing a project, which is a remake of ‘Ben-Hur‘ from 1959 that starred Charlton Heston. Keith Clarke wrote the spec script, which he has done a couple documentaries and a narrative film called ‘The Way Back‘, which starred Colin Farrell, Jim Sturgess, and Ed Harris.

Hi, Bryan and Lisa S. Here…..

9d8c1968aa60cdb4dca86ed6790187e2

I had some help writing this article with writer, Lisa S.   Lisa hails from netherworld of the Northwest and is not above watching zombie movies for 24 hours straight.  She loves all kinds of scary movies and is an avid music fan.  You might even find her perusing the used DVD bin at your local movie store looking for old Ernest movies and Sifl and Olly discs.  Lisa helped quite a bit with this article and you can expect her read many more of her articles on this site from this point forward.  Give her a warm welcome and visit her online book and record store HERE.

Now let’s get to the list.  Here are Boomstick’s Top 20 Female Badasses in film and television.  I tried to keep it in the horror/sci-fi genre, but a couple of action star made it in there.  These females are the most hardcore we feel, by how much ass they kick, their courage, and their sex appeal.  We dare you to find better role models and badasses than this.  Enjoy the list.

Bryan’s Review of Linklater’s ‘Bernie’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 4th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

Richard Linklater’s film, Bernie, was inspired by an article in Texas Monthly Magazine by Skip Hollandsworth titled ‘Midnight in the Garden of East Texas’.  The article was an editorial about a murder committed in the small East Texas town of Carthage, Texas.  Hollandsworth’s editorial argued that the entire town supported the killer, rather than the victim.  Regardless of the fact that the killer confessed, the evidence proved his guilt, and a court sentenced him to life in prison, the entire town still believes he is innocent.  This real-life story translated into a hilarious dark comedy.

Classic Waxxx: Ten Years After “Ssssh.”

by NapkinArt on Aug 2nd, 2011

When one starts talking about the British Invasion, one of two things come to mind: 1) The American Revolution and 2) The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Who and every other hit rock n’ roll band that came to America from the ‘other side of the pond’ in the 1960s. However, little do people realize that Alvin Lee and his band Ten Years After also hails as part of the musical British Invasion.

Now, I will admit that my knowledge of Ten Years After was quite limited, mostly limited to their one live performance of “I’m Going Home” from the “Woodstock” documentary in 1970, a performance I liked initially, but became bored with after subsequent viewings. But, suffice to say I’m happy to have acquainted myself with more of their catalog over the last couple of years, and my opinion has drastically changed for the better. Read the rest of this entry »

WWE: Hell In A Cell 10/25/2015 Recap!!

by Angelic Heel on Oct 26th, 2015

Angelic Heel once more…

Hell in a Cell is known as the most brutal structure in the WWE. No other match brings with it the sense of foreboding at the mere mention of its name. The WWE Universe waited in anticipation as the Pay Per View that bore the name of the most dreaded match unfolded before them (shown on the WWE Network for the low low monthly rate of $9.99 or free for the first month #BetterThanNetflix) The night saw every Championship defended, as well as honor defended and legends put to rest. The night was filled with ups and downs that kept one guessing and in the end, the WWE delivered as the most demonic structure in sports entertainment lived up to its hype. Did you miss it? Find out what happened now!

School of Rock Adapted To Series for Nickelodeon!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Aug 5th, 2014

Hey guys, Jana here,

63d13fcdb1e9d1d376855bd9393c86ed

I’m still surprised there is a world where Jack Black and kids go great together, but that’s what 2003’s ‘School of Rock’ proved to be true. Nickelodeon likes the idea so much they have given a straight-to series order for a TV show based on the film. Teaming up with Paramount TV, Nickelodeon brings back director Richard Linklater (‘Dazed & Confused’) and pairing him with writers Jim and Steve Armogida (‘Crash and Bernstein‘) and Scott Rudin (‘No Country For Old Men‘) will executive produce.
