Hey guys, Jana here,

♪♫Who’s the cat that won’t cop out when there’s danger all about?

(Shaft)

Right on ♪♫

If you were unsure the answer was anything other than “Shaft”, you best be getting yourself a film-education right fast and in a hurry. If you just can’t seem to get that done, Netflix will give you a primer when they reboot the classic 1971 film that was already rebooted once in 2000.

NewLine is partnering with Netflix to produce and distribute the flick with a $30 million budget. What the deal contains is that Netflix would produce more than half of that $30 million budget for international rights and the ability to offer the film two weeks after New Line gives it a theatrical release. In the deal, the end result will give director Tim Story (‘Ride Along‘) more overhead that can go into film production than he would have alone from New Line.

Now as for what the reboot will look like, it has a script by ‘Black-ish‘ creator Kenya Barris and, like the 2000 film will again feature Samuel L. Jackson in the role of John Shaft and much like the 2000 film, Richard Roundtree is set to appear again in his iconic role. Jessie T. Usher (‘Independence Day: Resurgence‘) will play Jackson’s character’s son. Per Deadline “He will play a young cyber expert FBI agent who, despite being estranged from his father, is forced to work with him on a case. It becomes a collision between old school and new school.”
