Film Review: ‘[Detroit]’!!

by Janet White on Jul 29th, 2017

Hello Everyone, Janet W.  here…

Fifty years ago (to the day I screened Detroit), atrocities occurred in Detroit, Michigan. July 25, 1967 has been a day of woe for generations past and will be for those to come. Effectively capturing the events of this time, Detroit offers a raw in-your-face journey into the debasement of human beings simply because of their color. Such actions led to outrage which brewed to boiling over due to criminal misconduct and murder performed by police officers escalated to several days of rioting and worse. Black people helping the crooked cops unlawfully abuse and imprison other black people. Read the rest of this entry »

Film Review: Atomic Blonde!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 27th, 2017

Dan M., here….

Atomic Blonde isn’t a perfect movie. It has an overly complex plot and is about 20 minutes longer than it needs to be, but all of that is overcome by some of the best action sequences in recent memory with an absolutely badass performance by Charlize Theron.

The New IT Trailer Does Its Job! Damn Scary!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 27th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

The new trailer for Stephen King’s IT remake is here and looks damn good and very scary. We get a ton of new footage here with more short glimpses of Pennywise the Clown, the famous blood in the sink scene, and much more terror. I have a feeling this remake is going to be one of the scarier films of recent memory, judging just by the trailers.

Hey guys, Jana here,

When a young boy disappears, his mother, a police chief, and his friends must confront terrifying forces in order to get him back. It’s a fairly non-descript premise for the series that grabbed the country’s attention and hasn’t let go, yet. Of course, I’m talking about ‘Stranger Things‘. The proof of that is the way Hall H erupted during their panel at San Diego Comic-Con where Netflix gave us a “Thriller” trailer for season 2. There are more questions than answers we have in the new trailer, but one question that was answered is “Does Barb come back for season 2?”

‘Westworld’ Season 2 Looks Bloodier Than Ever!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jul 23rd, 2017

Hey guys, Jana here,

Westworld isn’t your typical amusement park. Intended for rich vacationers, the futuristic park allows its visitors to live out their most primal fantasies with the robotic “hosts.” However, the robotic hosts have evolved an artificial consciousness that is similar to, yet diverges from, human consciousness. No matter how illicit the fantasy may be, there are no consequences for the park’s guests, allowing for any wish to be indulged; but there is a price to be paid.

Film Review: ‘[Girls Trip]’!!

by Janet White on Jul 22nd, 2017

Hello Everyone, Janet W. here…

We’ve seen this storyline before. Four friends come together, experience a separation, reconnect and hijinks abound. In Girls Trip, Ryan (Regina Hall), Lisa (Jada Pinkett Smith), Sasha (Queen Latifah), and Dina (Tiffany Haddish) met in college, became the Flossy Posse and were thick as thieves. Then life happened and disrupted their efforts to stay close. An opportune event, New Orleans’ Essence Festival, changes all of that…

Film Review: Dunkirk!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 19th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

There’s never been a war film like Dunkirk, which I’d say is a masterpiece in filmmaking, lead by Christopher Nolan (Inception, The Dark Knight Trilogy). Even though Dunkirk cost $150 million to make, you really wouldn’t know it, as it’s simplistic, yet grand view of the Battle and Evacuation of Dunkirk in 1940 is perfectly captured here. Dunkirk is why we still go to the movies. It’s one of the most intense movies I’ve ever seen and is one of the reasons to get out and see it in IMAX. Other war films try add sweeping music to add an emotional effect or certain camera angles to drum up more dramatic suspense.

Fresh off the wings of his most commercial movie to date, Pete’s Dragon (2016), Director David Lowery floats back to his Indie roots with the dreamy fantasy drama, ‘A Ghost Story.’  This ponderous portrait of life, loss and existence will undoubtedly make art enthusiasts coo over its alluring framework and vision, but for those anticipating an intensely haunting experience, be prepared for more mood than material. Hi everyone, Bryan here….

THE FILM

Film Portion Reviewed by Janet White:

In typical 70s film fashion, Free Fire opens with an aerial scan of the city below.  Curvaceous, bold letters displayed nearly every cast member and some of the crew.  This got very old, long, and kept the pace slow.  Two men waiting in an alley… (Sounds like a bad joke, it was).  Stevo (Sam Riley) and Bernie (Enzo Cilenti) meet up with Justine (Brie Larson), Chris (Cillian Murphy), and Frances (Michael Smiley) for a shady gun buy with Ord (Armie Hammer), Vernon (Sharlto Copley), Martin (Babou Ceesay), Gordon (Noah Taylor), and Harry (Jack Reynor, how did they turn this hottie into a slob?).  Great cast, right?  Well, great casts alone do not a great film make.  The dialogue and plot points must harness and ride with that talent.

Celebrate the Life of George Romero!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 16th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan and Jana here….

George A. Romero 1940-2017

What a sad day this is. Just the other day, I was thinking and hoping that George Romero had one more zombie film in him left. That’s not the case as the Godfather of the zombie genre and one of the best filmmakers in the horror genre has died today at the age of 77 from lung cancer. With the past few years, the zombie genre has infiltrated every form of media. The Walking Dead, Resident Evil, and tons zombie epics have come in the forms of comic books, TV shows, films, and video games. There wouldn’t be any of this, if it weren’t for George Romero who brought us a super small budget film in 1968 called Night of the Flesh Eaters, later changed to Night of the Living Dead, which gave us the zombie we know today.

Hi everyone, Bryan here…..

BBC has announced the arrival of the 13th Doctor for the famed Doctor Who television series. Taking over the role from the departing Peter Capaldi is none other than Jodie Whittaker, who is the first woman to take on the Doctor role in the sci-fi series. Whittaker is in Broadchurch and was the main woman in the excellent Attack the Block movie from a few years ago.

Favorite Movie Scene of the Day #13!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 14th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

Since it’s Friday and this is the 13th installment of the Favorite Movie Scene of the Day, it made sense to pick a scene from the iconic Friday the 13th franchise. Out of the 12 films, where does one begin to pick a scene? There are so many great death scenes, ridiculous dialogue, and tits flying around with blood, that I need to just make a montage of everything I love about this franchise. I just don’t have the time right now. It’s unfortunate that it’s rather difficult to find all of the films in one place these days.

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

It looks like Disney is releasing more in 4K UHD since they announced their first 4K release with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 the other day. I expect the flood gates to open up real soon, which means, Pixar, 2D animated classics, Marvel, and LucasFilm releases will be coming out in 4K. Bittersweet news, I know. Sweet, because it will look amazing in 4K finally. Bitter, because the wallet will take a big hit. Expect to purchase the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales‘ in 4K UHD on October 3rd with the digital version releasing on September 19th.

Bring in the Horror Holiday Cheer with Better Watch Out!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 14th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

I’m a sucker for holiday horror movies. They are so much fun and full of blood and holiday cheer. There’s a new film called ‘Better Watch Out‘ that will be released in theaters and on VOD on October 6th, which is just in time for Halloween. This very short teaser trailer is quite funny, which shows a couple of women singing Christmas carols, where a third woman is running from an unidentified attacker, where she quickly gets chopped up. I’m all in.

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

You just can’t keep Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio away from each other. The two are prepping a new film that is based on the true crime thriller ‘Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI‘ by author David Grann. This insane true story is set in the 1920s where the members of the Osage nation in Oklahoma were brutally killed after someone discovered oil beneath their land. This went on for a while as a serial murder rampage, which was one of the first big cases the FBI investigated.

Favorite Movie Scene of the Day #12!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 13th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

This scene still scares me. While the whole movie itself is kind of silly in moments, this particular scene still makes the hairs on my neck stand up straight. The first Child’s Play movie was actually quite serious, but the many sequels that followed went into over-the-top silly territory, which is fine, but that original 1988 movie still haunts me. I remember seeing Child’s Play on VHS right when it came out and having nightmare that this possessed doll named Chucky would come and get me. I’d be lying if I didn’t think the same thing from time to time even to this day.

Nine Inch Nails Is Back With New EP and Single!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jul 13th, 2017

Hey guys, Jana here,

Nine Inch Nails has never really been gone, if you ask me, but they’re back with a new five-song collection release titled ‘Add Violence‘ on Friday, July 21st. Leading the pack of this new release is the upbeat single ‘Less Than‘. You’ll find the video below, it will make you absolutely giddy, or maybe that’s just me. Blu-ray Review: The Fate of the Furious!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 13th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

THE FILM

We’re eight movies into this franchise, which would have you assume that these films would have lost steam, been remade, or have a completely new cast. That’s not the case at all with ‘Fate of the Furious‘ or the 8th installment of the ‘Fast and Furious‘ franchise, because there are no signs of this franchise slowing down, being remade, or losing any of its fun cast.

The Pilgrimage Trailer Looks Hardcore!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 13th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

“I’m on a pilgrimage to see a moose!” Well, not so much here, but there’s a new movie coming out on August 11th called Pilgrimage that looks hardcore. From what I can tell from the bloody violent trailer, it looks like a cross between Braveheart, a supernatural horror film, and Scorsese’s recent Silence film, but you know, with more decapitations and blood. Jon Bernthal (Walking Dead) and Tom Holland (Spider-Man: Homecoming), along with Richard Armitage (The Hobbit) star in the film, and takes place in Ireland in the year 1209 where a group of monks being a pilgrimage to escort an ancient relic. Things get out of hand, human heads end up on giant sticks, sword fights ensue, and blood is shed. This seems right up my alley.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is coming to 4K UHD!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 13th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

I can’t believe it’s finally happening. Disney is releasing their first 4K UHD release with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which couldn’t be a more perfect debut release in the new format. Disney has been holding out for a while now, while other studios have been releasing their new and vintage films in 4K. It was only a matter of time. There will be Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos included on the release as well, along with quite a few fun bonus features. You’ll be able to watch the film on digital platforms, starting August 8th, and purchase the actual 4K UHD Disc on August 22nd. So now I’m impatiently waiting for Disney to start announcing some vintage vault films and shows, re-releasing in 4K UHD. It’s only a matter of time, but expect my wallet to dwindle down with the following announcements.

Favorite Movie Scene of the Day #11!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 12th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

When David Wain, Michael Showalter, and Michael Ian Black showed up on the entertainment scene, they brought comedy into a new direction with their unique humor and jokes in the Stella shorts. If you haven’t seen those, I highly suggest you check those out. A little bit later on, they made a tiny movie called Wet Hot American Summer, which became an instant beloved cult classic that has spawned multiple sequels/prequels in tv series form on Netflix. Speaking in terms of specific scenes though, one in particular comes to mind that makes me laugh out loud every time I see and think about it.

Film Review #2 – War For The Planet of the Apes!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 12th, 2017

Dan M., here….

War For the Planet of the Apes is the best movie I have seen this summer. It is astonishingly well done. Every aspect of this movie *at a minimum* worked. Some of the basic moments and scenes would be considered high points for lesser franchises. There is a ton to spoil in this film but I will not be doing that in this review. Hopefully in a few weeks once people have seen the movie we can discuss the moments that made this movie so damn good in greater detail.

Film Review: War For The Planet of the Apes!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 12th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

I believe we all thought that Tim Burton killed the Planet of the Apes franchise back in 2001 with his horrible version of man vs. ape. Luckily in 2011, the studio breathed new life into the franchise with Rupert Wyatt’s early telling of what is to become with Planet of the Apes with astonishing visual effects, acting, and one hell of a story. That film – Rise of the Planet of the Apes showed that one ape named Caesar (Andy Serkis) was to become the first highly intelligent and humanized ape, but it came at a great cost with a virus that wiped out most of Earth’s population. In the sequel Dawn of the Planet of the Apes that was taken over by Matt Reeves (Cloverfield), Caesar and his ape friend are battling for their lives against the humans that have survived the virus outbreak. Now we have arrived at the conclusion of this epic trilogy – War For The Planet of the Apes, with Reeves in the director’s chair again as we see an aging and grayish haired Caesar tending to his family and still battling the demons of his former human-hating friend Koba, whom was killed in the previous film.

Look Who Will Be in the Live Action Lion King Remake!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 10th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

Unfortunately, Disney is remaking The Lion King in the form of a live-action debacle, similar to the recent horrid turd of a film Beauty and the Beast. Fortunately though, they have Jon Favreau in the director’s chair. I trust him. He gave us Iron Man and the recent live-action remake of The Jungle Book, which was loads better than that Beast movie. There are literally no humans in The Lion King story, unlike Jungle Book or Beauty and the Beast and if it follows the same pattern with the same exact camera shots and songs as its animated predecessor, it’s more than likely going to lose whatever emotion and lovable quality it had in the lifeless eyes of the CGI live-action animals.

Favorite Movie Scene of the Day #10!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 7th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

This film is so amazing and so remarkable and fresh in every way possible that I can’t seem to watch it enough. I’m of course talking about Topsy Turvy, directed by Mike Leigh and starring and A-List cast. I’m a huge fan of films that cover the making of movies or in this case, a stage play. The inner workings of the behind-the-scenes of a film or stage play are hectic, stressful, hilarious, scary, and down right comical all in one bag. Just look at the films Son of Rambow or the recent Birdman.

Film Review #2: Spider-Man: Homecoming!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 7th, 2017

Dan M., here….

Spider-Man: Homecoming is a really good “Marvel” (too lazy to explain all the Sony stuff) movie that is hopefully the breath of fresh air the MCU needs. It had much smaller stakes, much more realized supporting cast and World that they operated in, a good villain that made sense, and a finale that didn’t turn into a $45million CGI punching. If the future of the solo Marvel films is going to be smaller universe conflicts that are more narrowly focused like this and Ant-Man? I am here for it. Leave space to Guardians & Thor, the end of the World to the Avengers, and weird dimensions to Doctor Strange. Give me low level criminals that Spider-Man has to fight before a math test to break those huge films up any day of the week.

Favorite Movie Scene of the Day #9!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 6th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

One of my favorite pastimes is singing out loud while driving or riding in the car with someone. I imagine most of us at one point or another have belted out our favorite tunes by ourselves or with our friends in the car, no matter how short a trip. There’s just something fun about singing along with our favorite musicians at the top of our lungs. Perhaps the best scene dedicated to singing in the car with your friends was conceived by Penelope Spheeris who gave us the iconic and amazing documentaries The Decline of Western Civilization that took an in depth and personal look at the punk rock scene. If you haven’t seen these films, I highly suggest you do immediately.

Favorite Movie Scene of the Day #8!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 5th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

I’m sure there are going to be a ton of Martin Scorsese directed scenes in this column, but the first one is definitely from Casino, which had Scorsese, Robert De Niro, and Joe Pesci come together for a third time to make a film again. With the huge success of Goodfellas, De Niro and Pesci basically play very similar characters to that film, but this one is set in Las Vegas in the Tangiers casino, which is a fake casino, but based off the real life people and Italian mafia they were all connected to. Casino is a fascinating film and one of the better gangster movies of all time.

Film Review: Spider-Man: Homecoming!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 5th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

Another Spider-Man movie with a different Spider-Man? Enough is enough already, right? You’d be wrong with Marvel’s first whole Spider-Man movie called Spider-Man: Homecoming. We’ve seen enough Spider-Man origin stories to last a life time, and luckily Marvel doesn’t give us another one. In fact, like we saw in Captain America: Civil War, Spidey (Tom Holland) already has the cool suit made by Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), as he helped the Avengers basically fight each other.
