Film Review #2: Wonder Woman!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 31st, 2017

Dan M., here….

Wonder-Woman-Diana-in-the-trenches

Let’s cut to the chase, Wonder Woman is great and one of the best modern superhero origin movies ever made. It deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as the original Superman, Batman Begins, Iron Man, etc. It is a nearly flawless introduction to a truly interesting character who cannot only carry her own film but will hopefully help carry future DC films the way Iron Man does with Marvel ones.

Film Review: Wonder Woman!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 31st, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

Screen Shot 2017-05-31 at 10.49.30 AM

The Warner Bros./DC Comics Cinematic Universe has been trying to get off its feet for a while now with no success, besides some decent box office money. However, most people would tell you that the new DC Comics‘ films are just not up to par with their rivals over at Marvel for many reasons. These people would be right. Perhaps one of the best moments of Batman v Superman was in fact Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. It was just a shame she only had a few minutes of screen time in that film. The rest was mostly trash. Luckily, Warner Bros. and DC Comics decided to finally make a Wonder Woman movie, which is the first superhero film to feature a female superhero as its main protagonist, as well with a female director with Patty Jenkins. The result is satisfying, making Wonder Woman a damn good film with a few flaws.

Film Review #2 ‘King Arthur: Legend of the Sword’!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 30th, 2017

Dan M., here….

I realize that I am late on this one. I was out of town when it came out and frankly, there were just higher movies on the list I needed to see. Well I got to see King Arthur: Legend of the Sword finally and let me tell you… it is really good. Out of every summer movie this year that I have seen, including Fate of the Furious and Guardians Vol. 2, I left the theater thinking about a sequel to King Arthur the most.

Blu-ray Review: GET OUT!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 25th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

NE2UEHKXb05S62_1_1

THE FILM

When you say the name Jordan Peele, you would most likely think of the brilliant comedic stylings of Key and Peele or Peele’s time on MadTV. You might even crack a big smile, thinking of Peele’s recent film Keanu. But I’m willing to bet you wouldn’t think of the words “horror maestro” when you see Jordan Peele’s name come across the screen. And that’s exactly what Peele can add to his resume résumé with his new movie Get Out, which he wrote and directed for the genre mogul Blumhouse.

Film Review: BAYWATCH!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 23rd, 2017

Dan M., here….

baywatccast

We need to get one thing straight as we start this review. Baywatch is not a movie to be judged on it’s plot. This movie exists in the same realm as Horrible Bosses, Spy, We’re The Millers, 21 Jump Street, & Neighbors. It has just enough plot so that it can get from joke to joke or gag to gag as efficiently as possible. It succeeds in this regard and has a really high “joke landing” percentage. More importantly, as a vehicle for unbelievably attractive people to let loose and be funny, Baywatch goes above and beyond. It is a showcase for these actors to show they’re really, really funny.

Dan M., here….

Screen Shot 2017-05-23 at 10.54.40 AM

The fifth installment of Disney’s nearly $4 billion dollar franchise is a Pirates movie through and through. It is about 20 minutes too long, has a needlessly complex plot, fantastic action set pieces, and way too many characters. I found it to be a real roller coaster viewing experience, where some points I was loving every single second of what was on screen and others I wanted to check my phone to see how much longer was left. There were no scenes in this entire movie that I was just ‘Ok’ with. I was either loving it or tolerating it. When it was all over I was pleased with the ending and, more importantly, that it ended.

Review #2 of ‘Alien Covenant’!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 22nd, 2017

Dan M., here….

Alien-Covenant-Teaser-Trailer-020

A crew gets a distress signal from a planet. Crew lands on that seemingly abandoned planet. Planet has aliens. Aliens infect or attack humans. A survivor or two must fight said alien to get off the planet. Rinse and repeat. That isn’t to say the Alien: Covenant is a bad movie, it really isn’t but as far as the broad strokes are concerned it is a paint by numbers Alien movie. A marked improvement from Prometheus because it has better characters but the formula to this point is getting a bit stale for me. I didn’t hate this movie. I know it sounds like I did but really I’m just ready for it to evolve a bit more.

Film Review: Everything, Everything!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 18th, 2017

Audrey E., here….

It’s no secret that in recent years the Young Adult genre has exploded in popularity, most notably after the phenomenally successful Twilight novel produced box office gold with 2008’s film adaptation. And since then, wherever there’s a bestselling book, there’s surely a major motion picture sticker following suit. At first glance, ‘Everything, Everything‘ might seem like another insufferable adolescent romance, but this one actually explores earnest issues and is surprisingly funny!  Read the rest of this entry »

Film Review: ALIEN: COVENANT!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 17th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

Screen Shot 2017-05-17 at 8.30.04 PM

We live in a time where all of our favorite films and television programs from decades ago are getting sequels, rebooted, and remade. The ALIEN franchise that we have all come to love over the years has had its share of revamps. Luckily, the original filmmaker Ridley Scott, who made ALIEN back in 1979 came back a few years ago and made an early sequel to the franchise with PROMETHEUS. Clearly, Scott isn’t done telling stories in this horrifying universe, and we now have a sequel with ALIEN: COVENANT, which breathes new life into this stale franchise and promises more sequels and even more scares. What we loved about the original ALIEN is certainly present in a lot of COVENANT.

Hello Everyone, Janet W. here…

King Arthur - Trio

Forget every film about the story of King Arthur, because King Arthur: The Legend of the Sword has nearly nothing to do with them. Uther Pendragon (Eric Bana, Yum!) is still Arthur’s father and Igraine (Poppy Delevingne) is his mother, but there is an uncle thrown into the mix, Vortigern (Jude Law). I cannot recall the character in medieval tale (and I took a course on King Arthur in college). Anyway, Law played him pretty well. I will not give it away, but I do not think I have seen Law like this ever. Mordred is a sorcerer instead of the Arthur’s son from Morgaine Le Fay? Yes, this is King Arthur told in a novel method. The Red Band Trailer to ‘Baywatch’ is So Satisfying!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 10th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

Why make a Baywatch movie remake? Well, if you have Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron, and Alexandra Daddario in it, you’re gonna have a good time and make some money. The TV show from the 80s and 90s was full of cheese, drama, and mild entertainment. It looks like this rated R remake is going the hardcore route with blood, big explosions, and tons of vulgar humor, which satisfies every hole on your body. I had no idea this film was turning out like this, but I’m now super excited to see this one. I have a feeling that my jaw will hurt from laughing and smiling so much from start to finish here.

Blu-ray Review: Orange is the New Black: Season 4!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 8th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

Screen Shot 2017-05-22 at 6.24.28 PM

THE SERIES

In the past, Orange is the New Black has developed a darkly comic and often tragic story with their series over the past few seasons, and this fourth season is no different, although it would seem things are more on the comedy side this time around than unhappy faces at the women’s prison. The show’s writers and producers can certainly weave current politics and social issues in to the show with ease in each character, but with season four, it seems like certain plot points are over-the-top.

I love the weird, oddball, and sometimes anti-hero characters so much, the dialogue, and the feel of the whole movie, that I really connected to it and enjoyed it on every level. This group of heroes are not the norm and I relish in all their conflicts, endearing moments, and witty banter. That brings us to Vol. 2 that reunites all of our favorite characters as they go on missions to save the galaxy.

Blu-ray Review: ‘How to Steal a Million’!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 3rd, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

THE FILM

In 1964, Audrey Hepburn made My Fair Lady, which was met with critical claim and financial success. After all of the chaotic press tours, media coverage, and award shows that followed that film, Hepburn joined the cool, fun film How To Still A Million in 1966 with Peter O’Toole, along with William Wyler as director (Ben-Hur, Roman Holiday, The Best Years of Our Lives). Not exactly a light-weight. How To Still A Million can be compared to Ocean’s 11, The Thomas Crown Affair, or the recent Trance film if it were a comedy and light-hearted.

Blu-ray Review: ‘You’ll Never Get Rich’!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 2nd, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

YoullNeverGetRich_BD_HighRes__69755.1491195814.1280.1280

THE FILM

In 1941, Columbia Pictures wanted to make a film that that was current, fun, and had A-List stars. Being the time of World War II and having the iconic actor/dancer Fred Astaire on board, it would seem like the studio had a big hit on their hands with You’ll Never Get Rich, which is a musical comedy that takes place during the war. Even though it was nominated for an Oscar for Best Song, this film doesn’t seem to be thought out or well executed on any level.

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

THE FILM

We all miss Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau. They had such excellent chemistry together through the years.  They starred in ten feature films together from Grump Old Men to The Odd Couple and everything in between. The duo had such comedic timing and love for each other that it just oozed off screen in and into everyone’s hearts. Their first film together was called The Fortune Cookie and cemented a life-long friendship and partnership in film that would last decades.

4K UHD Review: 3:10 to Yuma!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 1st, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

THE FILM

Filmmaker James Mangold has certainly made a name for himself in the Western genre of cinema with the likes of 3:10 To Yuma and more recently Logan. The guy knows how to tell a thrilling story set in the old west as we’ve seen before. Prior to this 2007 version of the film, author Elmore Leonard (Jackie Brown, Get Shorty), wrote a short story, which was adapted into a 1957 film called 3:10 To Yuma. Mangold thought it would serve as a great remake in these modern times and he wasn’t wrong, while he added a few new story conflicts to this great 2007 version.
