Hi everyone, Bryan here….

cb941c80-df09-11e6-8dc8-1fe8c8155e51_unbreakable-split

M. Night Shyamalan was the next greatest filmmaker in the world. With films like The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and Signs – the talented filmmaker was set to be the next Spielberg, Lucas, Scorsese, Hitchcock, and Gilliam combined into one person. It was working for him. Then, Shyamalan went on a “bender” and made a ton of shitty films, but I do believe this was a case of Hollywood taking control and not letting him do anything creative.

Film Review: ‘The Promise’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Apr 21st, 2017

Audrey E., here….

maxresdefault

If done right, who doesn’t appreciate a muscular war film decorated with a cherry of passion on top? Based on true events, ‘The Promise,’ directed by Academy Award winning filmmaker Terry George (Hotel Rwanda), had the capacity to convey a burning love story intertwined with the real Armenian genocide during World War I. However, inspired thematic violence and even Christian Bale can’t guarantee your film’s success.

Film Review: ‘[Free Fire]’!!

by Janet White on Apr 21st, 2017

Hello Everyone, Janet W. here…

Free Fire - Gun Gang

In typical 70s film fashion, Free Fire opens with an aerial scan of the city below.  Curvaceous, bold letters displayed nearly every cast member and some of the crew.  This got very old, long, and kept the pace slow.  Two men waiting in an alley… (Sounds like a bad joke, it was).  Stevo (Sam Riley) and Bernie (Enzo Cilenti) meet up with Justine (Brie Larson), Chris (Cillian Murphy), and Frances (Michael Smiley) for a shady gun buy with Ord (Armie Hammer), Vernon (Sharlto Copley), Martin (Babou Ceesay), Gordon (Noah Taylor), and Harry (Jack Reynor, how did they turn this hottie into a slob?).  Great cast, right?  Well, great casts alone do not a great film make.  The dialogue and plot points must harness and ride with that talent.  Inundated with morons and piss-poor shooting for a calamitous combination, Free Fire leaves the audience either shaking their heads or bowing over laughing.  Between the mumbling of lines and poor volume control, I missed bits of the dialogue for sure.  It is as if they were aiming to repeat what Tarantino did with Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs, but they were not clever enough.  Complete with wondrous never-ending bullet supplies and a villain’s miraculous ability to stave off death repeatedly aka “movie magic,” Free Fire simply does not make much sense.  Could a person, shot in their right arm, fire a weapon (even automatic rifles) with their right hand? The trailer for ‘MENASHE’ is here.

by Gumbercules9000 on Apr 19th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

menashe_still_sundance_-_publicity_-_h_2017

A24 does film right. Their up coming film ‘Menashe‘ looks so heart-warmingly good that I might have to see this film three times on opening night. This is a Yiddish-language film mostly and is set in the Hasidic neighborhood of New York that follows a man who recently lost his wife and looks to raise his son alone. There’s even a scene where a ton of Gefilte fish falls off a truck. I laughed out loud. Enjoy the trailer.

Dan M. Gives His Thoughts on ‘Fate of the Furious’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Apr 16th, 2017

Dan M., here….

fate-of-the-gurious-952x563

Fast & Furious: Civil War

(Feel free so scroll to the bottom if you’re here to talk Jason Statham.)

After the death of Paul Walker and the 7th film there has been lots of speculation as to where the Fast & Furious franchise would go and the 8th movie definitively answers that question: Anywhere it damn well pleases. By the end of The Fate of the Furious, the loudest, most insane, and dumbest (in a good way) entry in the series, the stage is set for 100 more of these films and I’d sign up for 99 of them. While many franchises are working as hard as they can to justify spinoffs and team up films, the Fast & Furious put itself in a position to justify a number of spinoffs. As a film universe goes, Fast & Furious is behind only Marvel.

Film Review: ‘Fate of the Furious’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Apr 13th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

the-fate-of-the-furious-2017-movie-5k-qhd

We’re eight movies into this franchise, which would have you assume that these films would have lost steam, been remade, or have a completely new cast. That’s not the case at all with ‘Fate of the Furious‘ or the 8th installment of the ‘Fast and Furious‘ franchise, because there are no signs of this franchise slowing down, being remade, or losing any of its fun cast.

Guess Who’s Playing Cable In ‘Deadpool 2’??

by Red Zeppelbon on Apr 12th, 2017

Hey guys, Jana here,

Cover-Spring Arts (Josh Brolin Sin City 2) 3-9

One of the most desirable roles in comic book movies has finally been cast. The curiosity is at an end. We finally know who will play Cable in ‘Deadpool 2‘, and it’s Josh Brolin. I’ll admit his casting doesn’t sit quite right with me, when I think of Cable, I think of Stephen Lang, but I’m certain Brolin will make the role his own and win over the fan base.

Film Review: ‘Into the Who Knows’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Apr 8th, 2017

Beka P., here….

INTO_THE_WHO_KNOWS

Into the Who Knows is billed as a kid’s adventure, all-age crowd pleaser. I had high hopes for this film, but I just can’t say that I’m on board with that description. I am not sure what age this film would appeal to, but it doesn’t strike me a young kid’s film and I wasn’t that into it as an adult. And since it’s a movie about a young boy and his imaginary fox best friend, I am going to go ahead and say that it’s not going to appeal to teens. Perhaps there is an audience out there that would love this film, but I think it’s going to be a small demographic. That being said, it’s also not an adventure movie.

Dan M., Here….

fast-and-furious-04252011

I saw The Fast and The Furious when I was 14 or 15. As someone who grew up watching Point Break on VHS and other 80s/90s action movies it was right in my wheel house. I have never been a car guy but I still remember that summer talking with my friends about Honda Civics, Nos, and spoilers that we’d all be getting when we turned 16. The first movie is a step by step remake of Point Break, right down to letting the “bad guy” go at the end with “I owe you a 10 second car” instead of “Vaya Con Dios.” It stared two relatively unknowns in Paul Walker and Vin Diesel who will never be confused with Daniel Day Lewis but were born to play these parts. Ultimately was a fun summer popcorn movie that no one thought they’d hear from again, let alone turn into an almost 4 billion dollar franchise.

Film Review: ‘[Going in Style]’!!

by Janet White on Apr 7th, 2017

Hello Everyone, Janet W. here…

Going In Style - Robbing Bank

Going in Style, a remake of the 1979 film of the same name, struts out of the Warner Brothers’ catalog to fill theaters with laughter once again. Joe (Michael Caine, formerly played by George Burns), Willie (Morgan Freeman, formerly Lee Strasberg), and Albert (Alan Arkin, formerly Art Carney) mix it up to form a hilariously bad trio bent on robbing the establishments that robbed them of their pension. For thirty plus years they worked for Wechsler Steel Company who suddenly relocates out of the country and dissolves their pension fund. Faced with foreclosure, a need for a kidney transplant, and the knowledge that they were robbed to pay their former employer’s utility bills drive Joe, Willie, and Al to rob WSB bank.
