Film Review: ‘Colossal’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 30th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

anne-hathaway-colossal-2

Filmmaker Nacho Vigalondo has certainly etched his name in stone in the genre arena of cinema. With films like ‘Timecrimes‘, ‘Extraterrestrial‘, and some shorts in ‘V/H/S Viral‘ and ‘ABC’s of Death‘, the Spanish filmmaker has made a name for himself for executing original ideas with heart and meaning behind whatever sci-fi or horror backdrop he uses. Not many people have done as great a job as he has on a consistent basis, while providing excellent characters and monsters all in the same film. Whenever there is a film with Nacho Vigalondo’s name attached to it, you need to run to the theater, grab your favorite candy and simply enjoy what’s about to be shown, because you won’t be forgetting it anytime soon.

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

It-SXSW-1-1

Clowns don’t scare me, however Tim Curry as Pennywise made me not sleep at night for a long time. It might have been his jovial, yet sadistic nature, sharp teeth, or yellow eyes, but it left a permanent mark on me forever. Other clowns just make me laugh. ‘IT‘ was a TV Movie based on Stephen King’s novel that came out 1990. It was a terrifying event that left some iconic images in my head for years to  come.

‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Has a Trailer!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 28th, 2017

HI everyone, Bryan here…

Screen Shot 2017-03-28 at 11.48.23 AM

All the cookies should be given to Sony, because they have finally learned to share ‘Spider-Man‘ with Marvel Studios. We saw the actor Tom Holland in the Spidey-suit in ‘Captain America: Civil War‘, and was probably the best Spider-Man we’ve seen thus far, but I imagine we will see about 1245 more versions of this character over the next couple of years. Hell, we still need Spider-Man to go into Darkness or something like that.

Ah, the age old question: ‘Are we alone in the universe?’ In the film ‘Life,’ a diverse team of astronauts try to find a definitive answer to that query and volunteer for a daring mission to outer space. After successfully retrieving a sample from Mars, they discover a single cell organism amongst it, which could prove the existence of life outside the realm of our planet. The explorers immediately begin conducting scientific experiments on the fast developing extra-terrestrial; affectionately calling it Calvin. However, their fondness is soon erased when the creature suddenly demonstrates it’s not there to make friends, and the false sense of confidence it’s lured them into could cost them their lives.

Film Review: ‘Trainspotting 2’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 23rd, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

We all got glassed twenty years ago with Danny Boyle’sTrainspotting‘ movie, and we stuck around for two decades to find out which cunts would come back. Luckily, everyone came back for ‘T2 Trainspotting‘, because this sequel is highly entertaining and has some heart beneath all of the scams, drugs, and violence. Some 20 years later, Renton (Ewan McGregor) is back in Edinburgh after hiding out in Amsterdam from the events of the first film. He runs into Spud (Ewen Bremner) who is still addicted to heroine and is not in a good place. The two eventually meet up with Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller), who now owns a run-down pub.

Top 10 Ryan Gosling Scenes in Movies!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 17th, 2017

Audrey E., here….

Screen Shot 2017-03-17 at 9.59.40 AM

Ryan Gosling is a true patron for the arts. Proof of this can not only be found in his selective partaking in films with telling characters, but also in his accomplished side projects. There’s his under-appreciated dark wave and gothic indie band, Dead Man’s Bones, and we can’t forget his courageous 2014 directorial debut in the fantasy drama, Lost River. He’s come a long way from his humble beginnings as a Mouseketeer on The All New Mickey Mouse Club, and despite the pressure from Hollywood to keep up appearances, Ryan concentrates on staying true to himself and what matters most: his art. Today I’ve put together a list of my Top 10 favorite Ryan Gosling performances in film and why this talented Canadian, a true 21st century James Dean, is more than meets the eye.

A resurgence of the 1990s is happening and Hollywood seems to be taking notice with ‘Game of Death,’ a Canadian horror film that opens with bright, pixilated credits – an homage to the decade’s early style of gaming. In a surreal turn of events, a group of seven unlucky millennials: Tom (Sam Earle), Beth (Victoria Diamond), Ashley (Emelia Hellman), Mary-ann (Catherine Saindon), Tyler (Erniel Baez), Kenny (Nick Serino) & Matthew (Thomas Vallieres) after a summer afternoon of drinking and drugs in a pool house, unwillingly become slaves to a board game that, just like ‘Jumanji‘ (can we pretend like the 2017 remake isn’t happening, by the way?), won’t let you quit until it’s finished.

There are tons of original stories and ideas out there. Get after it Warner Bros. Sources close to the project have said that a remake of ‘The Matrix‘ is in the works, which isn’t necessarily new news, since we reported on this a couple of years ago. It wasn’t so much of a remake back then, but maybe an expanse on the storyline or even a sequel.

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (1991) is in the top 2 Disney animated movies of all-time. I’ll only allow The Lion King, which has a live action version due in 2019 or 2020, to be ranked ahead of it. This isn’t a debate. These are facts. Beauty and the Beast (animated) is a masterpiece from songs to characters, which is why I loved that this new live-action movie stayed so true to the animated version. It was an extremely enjoyable two hours with some really great moments and I look forward to seeing it again.

Hey guys, Jana here,

nerdist723

Bobby Cannavale is one of those guys you might not recognize by name, but when you see his face, you’ll recognize him from a dozen different projects. Some of them being Marvel’s Ant-Man‘, the absolutely brilliant ‘Chef‘, ‘Will & Grace‘, ‘Boardwalk Empire‘, and my personal favorite, ‘Nurse Jackie‘. He’s recently coming off the recently canceled HBO series ‘Vinyl‘ and has picked another series to call home for the time being, this time it’s USA’s Mr. Robot‘.

Check Out The Trailer For ‘The Little Mermaid’!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Mar 9th, 2017

Hey guys, Jana here,

the-little-mermaid-hans-christian-andersen

The trailer just landed for ‘The Little Mermaid‘, now before images of a red-headed Ariel singing Disney songs jumps into your brain, this is NOT the Disney version. While the film shares the name of the popular animated flick, the story line is much different. A young reporter and his younger sister travel to a small town in Mississippi to find who is believed to be the real Little Mermaid.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Moana’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 9th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

616wPom8RSL

THE FILM

Moana‘ is the latest animated film from Disney, releasing a few months after their big hit ‘Zootopia’. No matter what film Disney releases, the usual messages and tone are consistent in every film. However, Disney magically manages to make each film feel very fresh, unique, and original with excellent characters, animation, and story lines that not only captivate me with each film, but to the masses as well. ‘Moana’ is no different here, as it looks visually stunning, as well as have an top notch story with excellent voice talent and songs.

Well, a bachelorette party gone wrong since a male stripper ends up dead at a Miami beach house.

The ‘GeoStorm’ Trailer is Here!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 8th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

Screen Shot 2017-03-08 at 1.53.42 PM

.In what looks to be the absolute WORST film of the last five years, ‘GEOSTORM‘ finally has a trailer. What is ‘GeoStorm‘ exactly? First off, let me just say that this film was supposed to come out a couple of years ago, but keeps getting pushed back – for obvious reasons. Mainly because, it looks like a giant SHIT-STORM of Epic proportions. This film is directed by Dean Devlin who really hasn’t done a directing gig, but rather produced the ‘Independence Day‘ films. So take that information and replace alien invasions with giant tornados, tsunamis, and snowballs the size of Mt. Rushmore hurling into skyscrapers.

Film Review: ‘Kong: Skull Island’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 8th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

Kong-Skull-Island-Final-Official-Trailer-6

We’ve seen a ton of versions of ‘King Kong‘ over the decades from the 1933 version to the Jeff Bridges version in the 1970s, and even more recently, the 2005 version that was directed by ‘Lord of the Rings‘ director Peter Jackson. ‘King Kong‘ has been a staple in entertainment and pop culture since he debuted in the early 30s and he is showing no signs of stopping, thanks to Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures who are taking their cues from Marvel and creating their own universe called the ‘MonsterVerse‘.

Film Review: ‘The Last Word’!!

by Janet White on Mar 7th, 2017

Hello Everyone, Janet W. here…

The Last Word - DJ

At the end of her highly accomplished life journey, Harriet Lauler (Shirley MacLaine) searches for something to do in The Last Word.  A wanderer in the land of denial about her clear case of OCD, Harriet makes her hairdresser watch as she cleans up the haircut she just received.  Suddenly, some spilled wine and a newspaper and light dawns on Harriet’s dome…she would orchestrate her obituary.  Anne Sherman (Amanda Seyfried), an obit writer for the local newspaper, is content in mediocrity though she dreams of more.  The wackiness and heartfelt joy that follows is the epitome of a female buddy film. Meet your New ‘Star Trek’ Captain!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 7th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

Screen Shot 2017-03-07 at 11.14.09 AM

It’s beyond me that there hasn’t been a ‘Star Trek‘ series in more than a decade. Even with all of the recent films, it would seem fitting to have a new series. I know, CBS has said they are doing a new series called ‘Star Trek: Discovery‘, which has been in and out of being made, but it looks like it’s gaining steam now – FINALLY! There is a new captain that will be played by Jason Isaacs.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Deadtime Stories’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 6th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

91GOv1XP4JL._SL1500_

THE FILM

I simply can’t get enough of horror anthology films. It’s like getting three or four horror movies all in one. With films like ‘Chillerama‘, ‘Trick R Treat‘, ‘Body Bags‘, and ‘Creepshow‘, we’ve been exposed to a ton of great little horror shorts that have lived in our lives for decades. Some have been good, while others not so good. One thing is for sure though, all have been entertaining and memorable. Back in 1986, when a lot of these horror anthology films were being released, Jeffrey Delman made his own with ‘Deadtime Stories‘.

‘Overboard’ Gets The Reboot!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Mar 6th, 2017

Hey guys, Jana here,

MV5BMjIzMjMxOTgzM15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMTAwODM2NA@@._V1_SY1000_CR0,0,666,1000_AL_

This might just be my least favorite topic, but it’s news, so here goes. Another remake is ramping up, this time it’s the 1987 Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell rom-com, ‘Overboard‘. It’s not exactly ‘Gone With The Wind‘, but it is a Garry Marshall movie and it was a staple of my childhood and I don’t want to see it Frankensteined!!

Film Review: ‘Devil in the Dark’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 6th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

Screen Shot 2017-03-06 at 4.41.35 PM

Note to self. Why would anyone go camping in the woods anymore? With films like ‘The Blair Witch‘, ‘The Evil Dead‘, ‘The Cabin in the Woods‘, and yes – even ‘Jurassic Park‘ – why would anyone want to subject themselves to monsters, demons, dinosaurs, or a witch? It seems fairly obvious to stay out of the woods for an extended period of time. Just stick to city parks, right? In ‘Devil in the Dark‘, we follow two brothers head out into the British Columbia wilderness for a long hunting trip. Vancouver is a nice city, full of everything you need. Why would anyone venture out into the vast and mysterious wilderness of B.C., even when you’ve had experience with supernatural phenomenons before? This does not stop brothers Clint (Dan Payne) and Adam (Robin Dunne) from taking that trek into the woods.

Film Review: ‘Beauty and the Beast’ (2017)!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 6th, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

Screen Shot 2017-03-06 at 12.22.19 PM

While Disney is busy making ‘Marvel‘ movies and new ‘Star Wars‘ films, they are finding it difficult to make original films these days, which is why they are taking their back catalogue of animated movies and remaking them in the live-action format. We’ve seen it with ‘The Jungle Book’, ‘Cinderella’, and the recent ‘Snow White’ films. Disney has no plans on stopping either, as with the release of ‘Beauty and the Beast‘ and their upcoming ‘Lion King’ live action remake. After watching this new version of ‘Beauty and the Beast‘, I don’t have high hopes for future live action Disney films whatsoever.

Film Review #2: ‘Logan’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 3rd, 2017

Dan M., here….

thumbnail_25047

Even when the dust settles and recency bias fades, I can’t imagine LOGAN not being considered one of the greatest superhero films of all time. For me, LOGAN is in the same class as Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Spider-Man 1-2, Iron Man, Reeve’s Superman, Burton’s Batman, etc. I believe all of those comic films work as films and stories first, comic fun second. There are plenty of “fun” comic movies I thoroughly enjoy and love but I wouldn’t classify them as well-crafted films. LOGAN is a great story and character arc first and comic fun second. It just works on every level.

Film Review: ‘Before I Fall’!!

by Janet White on Mar 3rd, 2017

Hello Everyone, Janet W. here…

Before I Fall - Party

Before I Fall, based on the novel written by Lauren Oliver, opens with an out of focus shot of Samantha Kingston (Zoey Deutch). Sam, as she is affectionately called, is for all intents and purposes, perfect.  She is pretty, dates the best looking jock, and is part of the top clique in the school. Four friends, Sam (Deutch), Lindsay (Halston Sage), Ally Harris (Cynthy Wu), and Elody (Medalion Rahimi), ruling the school, doing everything together, and partying hard are the ingredients of your typical high school drama. Next, the viewer is inundated with a montage of the people in her world beginning their days in different ways. Suddenly a dread comes over me, am I stuck watching a teenybopper film?  Read the rest of this entry »

Writer director M. Night Shyamalan (‘The Sixth Sense‘) went from one of the most exciting directors to a cliche joke seemingly overnight after ‘The Village‘ and, especially, the floating turd that was ‘Lady in the Water‘. The man heralded as “the next Spielberg” has seen his stock rise in 2015 with ‘The Visit‘ and once again with ‘Split‘ which many put on par with ‘The Sixth Sense‘. It’s ‘Split‘ that is gathering attention today with the announcement from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment of it’s release to Blu-ray, DVD, Digital HD and On Demand.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Bad Santa 2’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 1st, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

813kR5bMECL._SL1258_

THE FILM

Back in 2003, we got a different kind of Christmas movie with ‘Bad Santa‘. It was full of vulgarity, sex, drugs, and alcohol. Not exactly your typical holiday spirit Christmas film. However, it was damn funny with some excellent witty dialogue and even had a bit of heart and soul to it, and cemented Billy Bob Thorton’s anti-hero Santa into cult status. If your new to the ‘Bad Santa‘ story, it follows a bank robbing duo who dress up as Santa and his elf and rob department stores on Christmas.

‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ Has a New Trailer!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 1st, 2017

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

C5zqMU-XQAIbjvc

It’s getting close to the release of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2‘ and to celebrate that, we have a brand new trailer. It’s a good trailer, however, I think it gives quite a bit away in it. That being said, I trust James Gunn fully and know he will have some shocks and surprises throughout.
