Jenny Mollen is a fantastic writer capturing America’s heart, (especially her husband’s Jason Biggs) and attention with her irreverent stories, ‘I Like You Just The Way I Am‘, and her latest book, ‘Live Fast Die Hot‘. Blu-ray Review: ‘Jungle Book’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 30th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

61Pcq43NUDL

THE FILM

How many renditions have there been of ‘The Jungle Book‘? More than a dozen over the years for sure, and it seems like Disney has more than just one project of ‘The Jungle Book‘ in play at the moment, or shall I say ‘The Jungle Book‘, meaning Disney has one and Warner Bros. has one.  The first project is Jon Favreau’s version, which is a live-action film, based on Rudyard Kipling’s famous book. The film itself is stunningly beautiful, as we see in the first shot of the film, which is deep inside the jungle with the young Mowgli running and hopping through the trees. The use of 3D here was actually quite good, specifically the amount of depth it gave the film and surrounded you with all that is the jungle.

Fede Alvarez burst onto the scene a few years ago with his short film on YouTube called ‘Ataque de Pánico!‘ It was so well received and well done that a few weeks later, Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, and Rob Tapert were calling him non-stop and even offered the Uruguayan filmmaker the chance to direct the remake of ‘The Evil Dead‘, which came out 2013 to rave reviews and fan appreciation for what it was. Since then, Fede has a few projects in the works coming up, as he is one of the top new filmmakers to watch in the horror genre.

Film Review: ‘War Dogs’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 19th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

thumbnail_24172

War Dogs‘ looks good on paper and the trailer for the film sells the movie’s comedy and fun moments. It seemed like the perfect project for director Todd Phillips (‘The Hangover’ trilogy, ‘Road Trip’, ‘Old School’) as he reunites with Bradley Cooper and adds Jonah Hill and Miles Teller to this story, based on true events about two school friends who love to smoke up and run guns for the government – some of which might be illegal. This is a very different film for Phillips from what we’re used to, and unlike the trailer, the film isn’t all that funny. Sure, there are some moments of small laughter here and there, due to Jonah Hill’s character, but the rest is Phillips’ wink to a mix of gangster movies, including ‘Scarface’, ‘Goodfellas’, ‘Casino’, and even a bit of ‘Drive’.

Rob Zombie has just announced that his latest horror flick ‘31‘ will be hitting theaters for just one night. He has partnered with Fathom Events to take over screens in over 400 theaters on September 1st. Zombie crowd-funded the production for ‘31‘ and offered fans some of the most excellent things, he knows we want in return: autographed posters, a name in the credits, the chance to be an extra in ‘31‘ and some awesome props from his movies, like masks from ‘Halloween‘ and the giant crosses from ‘House of 1000 Corpses‘.

Film Review: ‘Hell or High Water’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 12th, 2016

Liz T., here…

635983225162133223-326266K11-C-07930

Director David Mackenzie’s latest film, Hell or High Water, is a perfect example of how slow and steady wins the race.  The film is a little slow to start, but once it gets going, it’s fantastic. The story centers around two brothers, Toby  Howard (Chris Pine) and Tanner Howard (Ben Foster) who are desperately trying to save their mother’s farm and keep it in the family. The brothers are literally under the gun to find the money and decide the quickest way to make the deadline is to rob banks. Toby is intelligent, calm, cool and collected and the brains behind the operation. Tanner is an ex con hothead who relishes the crime spree and does little to control either his rage or his inclination toward violence.

Nickelodeon To Air ‘Rocko’s Modern Life’ Movie!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Aug 12th, 2016

Hey guys, Jana here,

rockos_modern_life1

Nickelodeon is celebrating 25 years of Nicktoons and in honor of that benchmark we are getting a one hour movie based on, my favorite, ‘Rocko’s Modern Life‘!!! It’s not going to be a huge feature movie that will hit theaters, but a one hour TV special and I suppose I can live with that because the current time period will get some fresh Rocko commentary. The series aired from 1993-1996 but has lived on in syndication and DVD.

Film Review: ‘Pete’s Dragon’ (2016)!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 12th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

Petes-Dragon-Movie-Disney-2016

Disney is knocking out some remakes to their beloved classics as of recently and it seems that they are enlisting the help of some great indie filmmakers to take the reigns of their future tentpole films and revamps. The latest being the remake of ‘Pete’s Dragon‘, which originally came out in 1977 and mixed live action with animation. It was a big hit for the studio and became universally loves by children of the 70s and 80s. Cut to present day, and we have Disney making a decent size budget live-action remake of the film with state-of-the-art visual effects and A-List talent behind the film. Not to mention a great indie filmmaker from the DFW area named David Lowery (Ain’t Them Body Saints), to co-write and direct this remake.

After some waffling back and forth, it looks like the sequel to ‘World War Z‘ is gaining some forward momentum right now and the current ray of hope is with a new director that’s circling the project. Director J.A. In a move that will surely have people claiming that Hollywood is trying to ruin their childhood, and why can’t they just leave it alone, along with my favorite – are there no original ideas anymore? Comes the announcement that Warner Bros. is revamping ‘Ocean’s Eleven‘ with ‘Ocean’s Ocho‘. Of course there’s a twist – the cast consists of women. If you’re claiming the George Clooney led ‘Ocean’s Eleven‘ from 2001 doesn’t deserve a reboot, just remember that film was a reboot of the ‘Ocean’s 11’ ensemble original from 1960. Frank Sinatra was Danny Ocean and was surrounded by his rat pack buddies. So go ahead, take a few minutes and get the whining out of your system, I can wait.

Film Review: ‘Tickled’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 10th, 2016

Screen Shot 2016-08-10 at 8.43.42 AM

Directors David Farrier and Dylan Reeve had a hit at Sundance with their documentary ‘Tickled‘. The buzz is justified and the movie is more than memorable. However, be forewarned. You will not leave the theater smiling or giggling. In all likelihood, you will leave this film horrified and possibly a little frightened about how a seemingly harmless ad can turn into one’s worst nightmare.

Film Review: ‘Suicide Squad’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 3rd, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

picture-of-margot-robbie-suicide-squad-photo

There seems to be a good movie hidden somewhere in ‘Suicide Squad‘, but the film itself makes it nearly impossible for you to find where those good moments are. The film is its own worst enemy, because it promises something new and fresh in the first dozen or so minutes, but then nose dives into the mountain from there on out. This is certainly writer/director David Ayer’s most ambitious project and I can’t tell if it’s his mistake or the collection of DC/Warner Bros. executives who forced the notes on him to make this film not succeed, because again, the first part of the movie gathers your hopes up for something fun. Ayer wrote ‘Training Day‘ and ‘U-571‘, then transitioned into directing with ‘End of Watch‘ and ‘Fury‘, which were both new and fresh takes on tired genres. I was hoping that Ayer could breathe new life and put the DC Comic movie franchise on the right track, but alas, that is not the case.
