No, this is not just a friendly PSA, there’s a story here. Universal Pictures has scrapped their planned project with ‘Clifford The Big Red Dog‘ and put him back in the shelter where Paramount Pictures has stepped in and adopted the sweet, red pooch. Film Review: ‘The Legend of Tarzan’!!

by Janet White on Jun 30th, 2016

Hello Everyone, Janet W. here…

Tarzan - Brothers

Every woman loves the strong and silent type, yes? Well, I say only for a while. Women are more than their looks and I’d say the same in regards to men. Both sides have bad apples, but on the whole, our actions and words are as integral to who we are as our appearance. Yet in The Legend of Tarzan’s portrayal of Tarzan, silence dominates and makes this King of Beasts a robot, not just mute, but cold and detached for the majority of the film. They should have subtitled the film, “A Man of Few Words”, because The Legend of Tarzan, starring Alexander Skarsgård as Tarzan/Lord John Clayton was just that.

Hey guys, Jana here,

Meet the most beloved sitcom horse of the ’90s – 20 years later. ‘BoJack Horseman‘ was the star of the hit TV show “Horsin’ Around,” but today he’s washed up, living in Hollywood, complaining about everything, and wearing colorful sweaters. Voiced by Will Arnett, with other voices provided by Amy Sedaris, Alison Brie, Aaron Paul and Paul F. Tompkins.

bleed-for-this

Miles Teller is an actor who showed amazing skill, determination and dedication on the five time Oscar nominated, three time winner ‘Whiplash‘ from 2014. He hasn’t really been that impressive in other roles because they forced him to be “small” and ‘Whiplash‘ was balls to the wall drama, none of the saccharine, schmaltzy teen love story crept in to that performance and ‘Bleed For This‘ shows why he’s made for the big stories.

Film Review: ‘Roseanne For President’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 29th, 2016

Screen Shot 2016-06-29 at 10.42.40 AM

That laugh. That iconic friggin’ laugh. It’s been awhile. Maybe I’m out of touch with culture, which I don’t think I am, but I have not heard that laugh in so incredibly long. Immediately, I think back to my childhood and the interior of the Connor house, not too far off from my own at the time. The sound of that nasally chuckle takes me back like a song. (*Joel proceeds to smash a Smashmouth record*) Side note on being “taken back”, did anyone else grow up thinking the show “Dinosaurs” was a story-arch/dream-sequence within the Roseanne show? You know, the flannel shirts and all with John Goodman?

Film Review: ‘The BFG’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 29th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

maxresdefault

I’m just thankful that Steven Spielberg is not doing awful period pieces like his last films, including ‘Lincoln‘, ‘War Horse‘, and ‘Bridge of Spies‘. Yes, those films won Oscars, but I’m willing to bet you’ve only seen the once and will never see them again. I’m thankful and excited that Spielberg has returned, at least for a few films into his magical world of sci-fi, which he excels at. This time around, Spielberg is tackling the children’s story of ‘The BFG‘ or ‘Big Friendly Giant’, by the great author Roald Dahl (‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory‘, ‘Matilda‘, ‘James and the Giant Peach‘, and ‘The Witches‘).

Film Review: ‘The Purge: Election Year’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 29th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

the-purge-3-trailer-still

Are you ready to cleanse your sins away and ‘Purge’ once again? Well, the movie industry certainly is with ‘The Purge: Election Year‘. Funny, it is an election year in the real world and with Donald Trump on the card, an actual ‘Purge’ might just happen. You might laugh at that notion and I do too, but it’s more plausible than ever before. Writer/director of all ‘The Purge‘ movies, James DeMonaco, actually got his start as the writer of the Robin Williams‘ film ‘JACK‘, which if you look at it closely, they are all practically the same movie. Of course, I’m kidding.

Film Review: ‘Swiss Army Man’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 28th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

thumbnail_24201

There are only a few times a year where a movie completely catches you off guard and there are fewer times where a movie will be imprinted and branded into your mind forever. ‘Swiss Army Man‘ is one of those films. It’s funny, disgusting, beautiful, and simply amazing on just about every level. This is where cinema is at its best. Director and writer pair Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (knows as Daniels) have masterfully crafted a screenplay and beautifully shot film that that covers just about every aspect of being alive and human. It’s almost a coming-of-age story in a weird sort of way and is full of pure, amazing life, even though there is a corpse throughout the entire film. This movie takes those small, precious, awkward moments in life and puts them flat on the table for everyone to see. It’s a little bit gross and weird, but it’s also amazing and beautiful. I don’t think any two people could have played the two parts any better than Paul Dano or Daniel Radcliffe did. They are simply phenomenal in their roles and bring such a heartfelt performance to each of their characters, that you can’t help but want to spend more time with them.

carnage-park

Alright, folks. Today, we’re going to brew up a little horror/thriller action. Let’s take a little Leatherface, mostly his hobbies and the essence of a sewing fetish. Add in quite a few heavy doses of The Hills Have Eyes – you know, the whole booby trap (THAT’S WHAT I SAY!) bit? For the final part of the mix, we’re going to sample a little bit of Mick from Wolf Creek lore. Pour it into a bowl once churned together, and we have ourselves a nice little Carnage Park.

The story of America’s most prolific serial killer will be told by Michael Sheen (‘Kingdom of Heaven‘) in his directorial debut. He will also star as the “Green River Killer” himself, Gary Ridgway. Ridgway had a vicious love/hate relationship with prostitutes and he was convicted of murdering 49 victims throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s but later confessed to at least twice that number and was spared the death penalty by being cooperative with locating victims. The first five victims were found in the Green River leading the media to create the “Green River Killer” moniker.

Film Review: ‘Intruder’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 24th, 2016

Joel H., Here…

Screen Shot 2016-06-24 at 10.13.04 AM

It has to be a lot of fun to mess with the mind of an audience in filmmaking. Intruder, like many home-related thrillers, leaves me looking over my shoulder as much as any of them. While I know that noise I just heard in the other room is my washer wrapping up it’s final cycle, my mind instead immediately races to “WHAT COULD I MACGYVER AS A WEAPON IN HERE!?” Now that I have a straightened out paper clip taped to the end of my remote, let’s continue.

Film Review: ‘The Shallows’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 23rd, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here….

shallows2

Note to filmmakers: When you make a movie, DON’T use slow motion for over 80% of your film, especially in the horror/thriller genre. It takes the audience out of the moment and is the horrid case with the new killer shark movie ‘The Shallows‘. After sleeping on it for a night, this film might be one of the worst and silliest films to come out this year. It’s just terrible filmmaking on just about every level. It’s poorly written, poorly shot, and doesn’t make a lick of sense. Blake Lively, who plays a young woman named Nancy does a decent enough job with the material she’s given, but after reading the screenplay, I would have walked far away from this film and never looked back, even if I got to go to Australia for a few weeks and film.

Nicolas Winding Refn has given us some fairly memorable images on the big screen over the years. ‘Drive‘ might be his most successful and most main stream film to date. That film was critically acclaimed and praised by almost everyone. He followed that movie up with ‘Only God Forgives‘ and it didn’t do so well, both financially and critically. Refn and his wife even made a documentary about it, but Refn left a sour taste on the film community, at least for a little while. This might have been a blessing in disguise though, as Refn has decided to completely do his own thing from now on.

Film Review: ‘I Dream Too Much’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 20th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

vasuma_new_profile

It’s not too often that we see a “coming-of-age” film that features an almost all female cast. Usually, the coming-of age movies center around boys or young men. If and when women are the center focus, it usually involves some sort of relationship or romance with a guy. Refreshingly and fortunate for us, Texas filmmaker Katie Cokinos flips the genre on its ear with ‘I Dream Too Much‘, which focuses on a college-bound young woman who discovers herself, while staying with her great aunt in upstate New York.

Film Review: ‘Daddy Don’t Go’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 19th, 2016

Joel H., here…

Screen Shot 2016-06-19 at 10.49.35 AM

I’ve always had a dad. He’s always been there, both he and my mom actually. I can’t pretend to know what it’s like to have an absent father. My wife, however, had a decent amount of detachment from her father. I know her pain through her expressing those feelings and emotions. I get the idea of not having a father in that vein, but only in that vein. It’s truly unimaginable. Being a dad, myself, at this point, I can’t imagine leaving my son. I simply can’t take the thought of him not having me as a part of his life. Understand, that’s not a boast in any capacity, other than just being a proud father, but he loves me. He loves my wife just as well. The thought of him losing either of us, who care most and love him most… It’s paralyzing. ‘Daddy Don’t Go‘ shows us the same thing by following the lives of four underprivileged fathers in New York City, and their fight to remain [good] in their children’s lives against all odds. Each one has a different story and background, but they all equal in heart. Over the course of two years, we see stories and situations progress and some end up seemingly cyclical.

Film Review: ‘Central Intelligence’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 15th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

centralintelligence620350

What would a Summer-Movie-Season be without Kevin Hart and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson? This summer, the two team up in an action-comedy called ‘Central Intelligence‘, directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber (‘Dodgeball‘ and ‘We’re The Millers‘) and co-written by actor/writer Ike Barinholtz (‘Neighbors‘). With so many buddy-cop action comedies out there, it’s sometimes difficult to tell one of them from another. Sure, there are the greats like ‘Lethal Weapon‘, ‘Turner and Hooch‘, and ‘Tango and Cash‘, but what does modern day buddy-cop action comedies hold that the past films don’t? When relating this to ‘Central Intelligence‘, it seems like the filmmakers thought it would be a lot of fun to put these two personalities together and basically let them riff off each other for a couple of hours. Throw in a some guns and a half baked plot about world security and terror, along with a message about being bullied, and you have yourself ‘Central Intelligence‘.

Film Review: ‘Finding Dory’!

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

Screen Shot 2016-06-14 at 4.59.43 PM

Another Pixar sequel is here, and this time it takes place under water with ‘Finding Dory‘, the sequel to the 2003 hit ‘Finding Nemo‘. Wow, has it really been thirteen years since Pixar made $940 million off that cute orange fish? Well, Pixar is in the sequel making business these days, and with ‘Finding Dory‘, they seem to have made an enjoyable and entertaining sequel that has some funny moments, but misses the mark on the heart and soul of the first film – not to mention the lack of creative story telling devices that the first movie had throughout. I’m sure this sequel will make a huge splash with all audiences, but the kids are more likely to eat this up than the adults.

I can easily say that Rob Zombie’s31‘ is one of my most anticipated movies of 2016. I know it shouldn’t be, but Rob Zombie is such a fun filmmaker in the horror genre, that I consistently look forward to his original films. I don’t count his ‘Halloween‘ remakes, because they weren’t really any good. However, ‘The Devil’s Rejects‘, ‘House of 1000 Corpses‘, and ‘Lords of Salem‘ all were highly entertaining and showed that Zombie progressed as a filmmaker. There are a handful of horror movies over the last decade that really satisfy us horror fans. Films like ‘The Babadook‘, ‘It Follows‘, and ‘The Conjuring‘ will still be talked about for years to come. One name in the horror genre, or at least in recent years is James Wan. This man burst onto the scene with ‘Saw‘, which was basically genre changing and spawned a ton of sequels. Wan also made a few other horror films, all testing the bounds and pushing us into a new horror direction, while still respecting his influences.

Film Review: ‘Puerto Ricans in Paris’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jun 7th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

Screen Shot 2016-06-07 at 1.38.05 PM

I’m not so sure on the ‘Puerto Ricans in Paris‘ title, other than to possibly make way for a string of franchise films with similar names with his comedic duo, but Ian Edelman’s first directorial effort is a funny buddy cop film that leaves the big action beats on the back-burner and instead, relies on the comedic genius and calm demeanor of its stars. Edelman created the HBO show ‘How to Make it in America‘ and brings along two of its stars in Luis Guzman and Edgar Garcia, who play Eddie and Luis respectively, two New York police undercover police officers who take down people and businesses making counterfeit handbags, clothing, and sunglasses. You know, most of you have been to New York and have paid less than $100 for a seemingly “REAL” Louis Vuitton handbag. Eddie and Luis are the guys that stop these people from making the counterfeits and passing them off as real.
