Some people start out acting in movies and that’s the pinnacle of their dream. So they search out the bigger parts in better movies. For all the comic book fans around the globe, we live in a great time of moviemaking. Over the past decade, we’ve seen Hollywood take the superhero genre by storm, releasing comic book movie after comic book movie with A-list stars, talented directors, and epic budgets to bring our childhood heroes to life on the big screen. This successful genre has even garnered many awards, as well as numerous television shows on almost every network. It shows no signs of slowing up. Marvel has paved the way for superhero franchises, building on each superhero character that culminated into the ‘Avengers‘ movies, showcasing each superhero across the other superhero movies, providing a big bridge to gather all stories together. It’s been an  excellent financial and critical success.

Love them, hate them or tolerate them, superhero movies are a staple in the grand pantheon of entertainment. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of slow-down for the summer blockbuster favorites, if anything there are more and more in the woodwork just waiting for their moment in the sun. Marvel took a wide lead over their DC counterpart in both quality and quantity of films produced, but DC is looking to make a comeback and that’s starting with this summer’s ‘Superman V Batman: Dawn of Justice‘. From there, we have stand-alone movies that feature our favorite comic book supes and among those in the works is ‘Justice League: Part One‘ and ‘Aquaman‘.

Film Review: ‘Midnight Special’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 17th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

maxresdefault

I’m a complete sucker for the sci-fi genre, and as of very recent years, we’ve seen an uptick in solid, satisfying sci-fi movies of all kinds. However, the original ones from our childhood of the 70s and 80s always come back to us once or twice a year to warm the nostalgic feelings. I’m of course speaking of ‘E.T.‘, ‘Starman‘, ‘Blade Runner‘, and ‘Close Encounters of Third Kind‘. All of those films have made a significant impact on a bunch of people’s creative and personal lives. There have been too few films that have reached this caliber of moviemaking, but Jeff Nichols’s film ‘Midnight Special‘ might just have a spot at the top with these greats, despite a few minor flaws.

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 17th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

I didn’t know a whole lot about ‘Hello, my Name is Doris‘, other than that Sally Field was starring in the film as true genuine free spirit of sorts, but when the director’s name flashed on the screen in the opening credits, I knew immediately I was in for a real treat. That director is Michael Showalter, who you might remember from ‘Wet Hot American Summer‘, ‘Stella‘, or ‘The Baxter‘, which was his last big directorial feature film some eleven years ago. ‘Hello, My Name is Doris‘ walks a fine line between the comedy and dramatic realm, but Showalter’s screenplay and directorial effort walks the line quite well, mixing some genuine and silly comedy with some intense dramatic moments.

Film Review: ‘Divergent 3: Allegiant’!

DISCLAIMER: I have not read any of the ‘Divergent‘ books, nor have I seen any of the previous movies in the ‘Divergent‘ series, although you could read our reviews HERE and HERE, but with me, you’ll have a fresh take on the series. So now that we’ve gotten that out of the way… let’s get to the point, which is that this movie was completely ridiculous. ‘Allegiant‘ is the third installment in this young adult series and only covers half of the third novel, so do not expect to get all your “allegiance” (yes, I went there) out with this one flick. So what can you expect? Boy, oh, Boy! You can expect heavy CGI, a pretty terrible script, about 25 minutes more ‘Allegiant‘ than necessary, unanswered questions, and some eye candy.

Film Review: ’10 Cloverfield Lane’!

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

Screen-Shot-2016-01-15-at-7.53.37-AM-620x400

Has it really been 8 years since we saw New York destroyed in ‘Cloverfield‘, which was the “found footage” film produced by J.J. Abrams about a giant monster in NYC. That film was highly secretive before it came out, and nobody really knew anything about it, but it did well at the box office and there was a lot of talk of a sequel for a number of years. A couple of years ago, things started popping up on sites that said “Untitled J.J. Abrams” project, and as of a couple of months ago, we got the first glimpse of a trailer called ‘10 Cloverfield Lane‘, produced by Abrams again and directed by first time feature director Dan Tratchenberg (Portal short). The studio and Abrams himself said that this was not a direct sequel to 2008’s ‘Cloverfield‘, but it was a blood relative or spiritual successor to it, because where do you really go from the end of ‘Cloverfield‘?

Film Review: ‘Only Yesterday’!!

by Janet White on Mar 10th, 2016

Hello Everyone, Janet W. here…

Only Yesterday - T

When you’re trying to find that next step in life, it helps to go back to the beginning, unless the beginning comes back to you.  Only Yesterday opens with Taeko (Miki Imai), at 27 years old, who is split between her functional life in city and her beloved summers in the country.  As Taeko prepares to make her annual trek to the country, her co-workers and sister tease her about being single at her age and not having fun like everyone else.  Taeko is not like everyone else, she thinks for herself and doggedly only does what she wants to do.  Enter Young Taeko (Youko Honna), Taeko’s 5th grade self and sort of a spirit guide, to help her reflect on who she is and why she is different than others.  Together they search for the path forward to happiness and contentment.

Martin McDonagh is the mastermind behind the stellar hit from 2008, ‘In Bruges‘, as both writer and director, he created a hilarious, witty film that I just adored. I’m thrilled to discover hes the same force bringing ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri‘ to life, with start of production set for April.

Hey guys, Jana here,

Michael Keaton

If there’s one thing the film world needs, it’s more spy movies! How about adapting Vince Flynn’s 14-best-selling novel series, ‘American Assassin‘? OK, so I didn’t think of it first, CBS Films and Lionsgate did because that’s the next film coming down the action pipeline. Not only that, but they’ve just brought in an A-lister that was part of not one, but two films that won the Best Film category for an Oscar for the last two years – Michael Keaton.

Film Review: ‘Knight of Cups’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 9th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

maxresdefault

There are two types of people in this world. Those who love Terrence Malick films and those who don’t. I tend to be the former in all aspects, from his films ‘Days of Heaven‘, ‘Badlands‘, and ‘The Thin Red Line‘. Recently, Malick has become more experimental with his filmmaking, with the amazing ‘Tree of Life‘ and ‘To the Wonder‘. Malick hasn’t been telling traditional narratives in a sense of the standard Hollywood formula, but rather has told a story with very little dialogue exchanged between characters as they walk through cityscapes and nature with a narrator voice over, detailing a stream of consciousness.

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

beach

Interesting news is afoot with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (This is the End, Preacher). The writing/directing duo purchased the rights to the ‘Where’s Waldo‘ franchise back in 2011 and it looks like MGM is ready to greenlight a live action version of it. You remember ‘Where’s Waldo‘ – the guy in the striped wool hat that is dressed in red, white, and blue, with glasses that you spent hours looking for in many books. The screenplay is written by Kyle Hunter and Ariel Shaffir, who according to Deadline have been taken under the wings of Goldberg and Rogen for some time now.

Hey guys, Jana here,

HBO is upping their game for the season 6 release of ‘Game of Thrones‘, not that they’ve needed to. With the ending of season 6 came the presumption of Jon Snow’s death and the entire downtime since that final episode has seen conspiracy theories crop up that are more far-fetched than the last. This is what any good series wants between their seasons. It’s no surprise that GOT has picked at that not-so-healing scab that is Snow’s demise with posters, trailers and now – a new red band trailer that lets us see a bit more in all its unedited glory.

Hey guys, Jana here,

Nicolas Cage Wallpaper @ Go4Celebrity.com

Nicolas Cage is stepping into the vacant director’s chair on ‘Vengeance: A Love Story‘. The chair has only been vacated recently by Harold Becker. Becker and the financier, Michael Mendelsohn, had a disagreement on the budget of the project. Producers wanted to take a $1M cut from the original budget and Becker claimed the quality of the film would be affected too greatly to consider. The two parted ways at that.

‘Hardcore Henry’ Trailers Are A Must-See!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 7th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

hardcorehenry_poster

I don’t know much about ‘Hardcore Henry‘, but now I’m all over it. This film looks insanely good. It might perhaps be the BEST film of the year, judging by these two trailers. The film will release on April 8th of this year with the lucky SXSW’ers getting a chance to see it this coming Sunday! I’m so jealous.

Hey guys, Jana here,

Zack Snyder has placed J.K. Simmons in the middle of another superhero world, this time making him Gotham City police commissioner Gordon in his upcoming ‘The Justice League‘. This is the same man that anchored Sam Raimi’sSpider-Man‘ at the Daily Planet as J. Jonah Jameson beginning in 2002 and running through three films before the property was rebooted.

Ironically, just last week Simmons stated that he’s open to playing Jameson again in the latest MCU reboot of ‘Spider-Man‘ that is starring Tom Holland, Marisa Tomei and Zendaya.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Crimson Peak’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 6th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

THE FILM

When Guillermo Del Toro makes a movie, you pay attention, but a ticket, strap yourself in the seat, and prepare your eyeholes for something that is guaranteed to thrill you, chill you, and fulfill you. With a resume that includes ‘Pan’s Labyrinth‘, ‘Hellboy I & II‘, ‘Blade II‘, ‘Pacific Rim‘, and ‘The Devil’s Backbone‘, you know for sure, you’re in for something special when Del Toro is involved. That brings us to his latest masterpiece of cinema, ‘Crimson Peak‘. Now I know that the trailers for ‘Crimson Peak‘ paint a picture that makes this look like a straight horror film, which is not the case here.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Creed’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 6th, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

91HQIKsJ-2L._SL1500_

THE FILM

Another year, another ‘Rocky‘ movie. Some of you might be saying, “When is enough, enough?” More times than not, you might be right with any string of sequels that goes back the third installment, particularly with the ‘Rocky‘ franchise. Sure, the first ‘Rocky‘ film from 1976 was spectacular, and arguably one of the better movies ever made. It even won a ton of Oscars that year, including Best Picture. ‘Rocky II‘ came shortly after, which was still excellent, but starting with ‘Rocky III‘, things got silly and the films lost some focus. Still, audiences world wide packed theater houses to see the Italian Stallion (Sylvester Stallone) underdog his way up to the top, never quitting and giving his best. It’s a great message.

Hey guys, Jana here,

diffmain

The Dallas Film Society is, once again, preparing for the Dallas International Film Festival (DIFF) which will run from April 14-24. Since it’s inception in 2007, the festival has been a lynch-pin in the film-release cycle as it represents the world and U.S. debuts of dozens of pictures. Creators and acting talent mingle with distributors, deals are made and we see the results on our own screens, it’s a magical time in the life of a film.

John Williams

The DFS has announced their ten lead off selections that will set the tone for the festival this year along with a few special selections that are certain to give you the warm fuzzies in the form of a special Salute to the Music of John Williams with a special screening of ‘E.T. – The Extra Terrestrial‘ and a special concert at the Dallas City Performance Hall featuring The Dallas Winds. This is all in conjunction with Williams being selected as this year’s AFI Life Achievement Award honoree.

Big Hero 6‘ is headed to new life as an animated series on Disney XD and is set to premiere in 2017. This news leads me to ask one big question: Is Fall Out Boy going with it? I fully endorse a world where more kids are singing “Immortals” and less kids are singing “Let It Go“!

Film Review: ‘Whiskey Tango Foxtrot’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 2nd, 2016

Beka P., Here…

cq5dam.web.1280.1280

If you love Tina Fey, you will love Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, but if you thought you were in for Sisters takes Afghanistan you are going to be sorely disappointed. Let me be clear, I really enjoyed this movie. I liked it on a lot of levels. However, one thing I really dislike is when movies are billed as one thing and then show up as something else. It’s kind of like online dating… no one likes it when someone unrecognizable shows up to dinner.

Film Review: ‘Zootopia’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 2nd, 2016

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

Zootopia

Finally, Disney has resurrected the animated animal film genre with ‘Zootopia‘ The genre was for sure getting stale with yet another ‘Ice Age‘ and ‘Madagascar‘ film coming out every year or so. That’s not to mention the ‘Kung-Fu Pandas‘ or any of the other sloppy films that have come out in recent years. That is until ‘Zootopia‘ has given new life to the world of talking animals with an incredible voice cast, hilarious bits that will leave you laughing out loud, a story that is highly entertaining, and great and very relevant messages throughout. Both adults and kids will find many things to love about ‘Zootopia‘, which is a thing Disney has been getting right for a number of years now.
