Film Review: ‘Green Room’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 30th, 2015

Jay S., Here…

green-room-movie

As a hobby musician, I’ve played a few sketchy venues.  I’ve had occasions where I had to worry about whether or not I would be paid, and I’ve even had a couple of times where my physical safety held the forefront of my thoughts.  In his latest triumph, “Green Room,” writer-director Jeremy Saulnier (‘Blue Ruin‘) takes ahold of those themes and runs screaming into the woods, dodging bullets, machetes, and outpacing the foaming jowls of kill-hounds.  During the Q&A at Austin’s Fantastic Fest, Mr. Saulnier told the audience about, as a teen, attending Punk-Rock shows and being perplexed and off-put at having to share the event with skinheads and neo-Nazis.  This experience he credited as being the seed that eventually led to the screenplay for his thrilling movie, “Green Room.”

Film Review: ‘The Walk’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 30th, 2015

Janet W., Here…

the-walk-joseph-gordon-levitt

Fade to white and what appears to be Joseph Gordon-Levitt with blue eyes?  You guessed it that cute little boy from 3rd Rock from the Sun and 10 Things I Hate About You.  Recall in 10 Things I Hate About You when Gordon-Levitt’s character, Cameron, was pretending to teach French to his lady love, Bianca.  I guess Joe moved past that mumbling mess he tried to pass off as French.  Blue eyes are not the only addition, the French accent is thick and very Maurice Chevalier.  Don’t get me wrong.  I love the French language and accent.  I admit though that the appearance of Joe with these cosmetic changes at first was a little jarring.  Obviously, he is no longer the little boy I used to watch.  He slipped into the guise of Philippe Petit seemingly effortless to bring us The Walk

Film Review: ‘Doglegs’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 26th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

"Sambo" Shintaro, Doglegs co-founder, and star of the documentary film Doglegs, strikes a fighting pose in Japan in this handout photo

I’m always excited to see a documentary in general, no matter what the subject matter is, but the icing on the cake is when I get to view a documentary on a subject that I never knew existed. Not only do I get to learn about this new subject matter, but I also get to go into the lives of the people who take part in whatever case study we’re watching. This wonderful documentary here by Heath Cozens is called ‘Doglegs‘ and gives us a glimpse at some of the lives who are involved in a pro-wrestling league in Japan. The kicker with this pro-wrestling league is that it consists of disabled people, some of whom can’t use their legs, arms, or even stand up straight.

Film Review: ‘Lazer Team’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 26th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

Rooster-Teeth-Lazer-Team-World-Premiere

It’s very rare when a movie like ‘Lazer Team‘ comes out. It’s over-the-top, ridiculous, raunchy, and very silly. However, it works on every level and I found myself having an excellent time in the theater from start to finish, laughing so hard, it hurt. Matt Hullum and Burnie Burns, the duo that is responsible for the iconic ‘Red vs. Blue‘ series wrote and directed this hilarious feature film. ‘Lazer Team‘ happened because the fans made it happen with a strong crowd funding campaign that ended up earning three times more than what they asked for, and it’s evident in the movie.

Film Review: ‘The Blackcoat’s Daughter’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 26th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

february

We’ve seen our fair share of demonic possession movies over the past several decades with some standing out in the spotlight and scaring us for years on end. Then there is the other side of this coin where these demonic possession movies fall very short from making any kind of sense other than to produce cheap scares. That brings us to the movie ‘February‘ or as it’s being called now ‘The Blackcoat’s Daughter‘, written and directed by Oz Perkins, who is more an actor than a director, this being his directorial debut.

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 26th, 2015

Hillary T., Here…

150917_MOV_Sicario.jpg.CROP.promo-xlarge2

Sicario is spanish for “hitman.” It’s laid out for you right when the movie starts. And from that point on, it’s a gripping and menacing thrill ride. Sicario starts with FBI agent Kate Macer (Emily Blunt, in another action role, SUPERBLY done) leading a raid in Arizona on a house owned by a cartel drug lord. She mistakenly discovers in a firefight inside the house bodies buried within the walls.

Film Review: ‘Demon’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 24th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

Screen Shot 2015-09-24 at 8.01.59 PM

Every couple has their own expectations and fantasies for their wedding day. It’s usually filled with flowers, rings, songs, and tons of drinks, hugs, and kisses. Every goes home, snuggles with their loved one, and almost always lives happily ever after. Most people say that your wedding day is one of the best days, if not the best day of your life, but that’s not the case with Marcin Wrona’sDemon‘, which is more or less an odd tale about the Jewish myth of the dybbuk.

When I heard that the game ‘Angry Birds‘ was being made into a movie, it was obvious what the story-line would consist of: pissed off birds and smug, slightly stupid and villainous pigs battling. Janet W., Here…

11150716_1109273022419802_1101831245724898286_n

The Civil Rights Movement addressed a crucial need for not just the Black community, but for the United States as a whole.  Long before the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s, efforts were made, baby steps if you will, to transform Black people from being and being viewed as slaves to being treated as the humans they are.  Some people showed love and helped.  Others showed fear and fought to keep people separated.  One of the “grandfathers” of this effort and a shimmering example of the former is Julius Rosenwald the powerhouse that built Sears into one of America’s first and most successful department store chains.

WWE: O’ What a Night of Champions 2015!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 20th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

185_NOC_09202015jg_0915-3399209481

Formally called Vengeance, ‘Night of Champions‘ quickly became a popular PPV in the WWE universe ever since it debuted back in 2001 where The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Kurt Angle, and Chris ‘Y2J’ Jericho battled each other over the course of a few matches with Jericho winning in the end, becoming the first Undisputed champion. This year, Night Of Champions took place in Houston, Texas and had some spectacular moments. In fact, one of the matches had me yelling out praises throughout. We will get to that match in a minute. In other segments though, things fell a little short, mostly dealing with Sting, who definitely didn’t deserve to be in the main event with current champ Seth Rollins, and who didn’t deserve to have his image and likeness on all the promo art. Don’t get me wrong, I like Sting. He’s a damn fine wrestler. Or shall I say, he WAS a damn fine wrestler back long ago, but not so much anymore. There is far too much talent in the back locker room to give Sting a shot at the championship. First off, Sting doesn’t show up to almost anything, but a couple time a year, whereas everyone else are having matches day in and day out in the WWE. And it just doesn’t make sense to have a guy like Sting who is barely there, more than twice Seth Rollins’ age, and not involved in any long story line to make this match believable, let alone anyone thing for a second that Sting could win the WWE title belt. But first, let’s start at the beginning.

Film Review: ‘Black Mass’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 16th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

Screen Shot 2015-09-16 at 8.01.58 PM

It’s okay to look at ‘Black Mass‘ as a distant sequel to the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean‘ movies. Both have bad guys, wars, guns, monsters, and Johnny Depp. Maybe I’m reaching a bit there, but it’s still fun to think about them as distant cousins in movies. The story of James ‘Whitey’ Bulger has been told a lot, especially recently. If you’re unfamiliar with who Bulger is, he was one of the most vicious and heinous human beings to ever walk the planet. He was even the FBI’s Most Wanted man for more than a decade, as he spent most of his time in Boston as a mafia boss who committed murder amongst other things.

A year later, we have the sequel to the popular young adult novel series ‘The Maze Runner‘ with ‘The Scorch Trials‘. in my previous discussion about the first film, first time director Wes Ball certainly knew how to film and construct some excellent action sequences that were highly suspenseful and kept the adrenaline flowing like vicious rapids. We’ve seen many stories, films, and television specials about Bobby Fischer, who has a reputation for being the greatest Chess player to ever walk the Earth. It’s also well documented on how Fischer fell into madness and became a recluse from his paranoia until his death in 2008. Fischer was for sure a strange and chaotic man, but he was also a genius and fairly charismatic when he wanted to be. Needless to say, Bobby Fischer’s life is as interesting as it is sad and is worth telling, which is why so many people have told it over the years.

Based on the 1996 Mount Everest Disaster where several climbers lost their lives, director Baltasar Kormákur (‘2 Guns‘) shows us what happened in those days that led up to that horrifying experience. I consider myself a little bit of a daredevil here and there. I love to bungee jump whenever I can, although I admit it’s been a while since I have, but I don’t think I have the guts to climb a mountain like Everest, which is the tallest mountain on the globe at almost 30,000 feet in the air. But year after year, people trek out there and climb it and succeed, where others don’t.

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

Finally, we have M. Night Shyamlan back in rare form with his new horror-comedy film ‘The Visit‘, which definitely doesn’t look like a Shyamalan movie at all. In fact, this is one of those “found footage” movies that rejuvenates this sub-genre of filmmaking once again. The world was introduced to M. Night Shyamalan back in 1999 with his hit film ‘The Sixth Sense‘, which quickly led the young director to superstardom as one of the coolest and imaginative directors of this modern era. Not only that, but he re-invented the “twist ending” again, which became a trademark of his down the road.

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 3rd, 2015

Fernando M., Here…

BSBEmmaFitzpatrickFranKranzJoeyKernIMG_2684

It’s sophomoric, juvenile, low budget, lacks any name recognition actors, but I dare say I had a good time watching it.

Blood Sucking Bastards is what happens when a comedy troupe gets together and says, “Hey, remember that great movie, Office Space?  What if it had vampires?”  Actually, I am 90% sure those were the exact words uttered to start this creative process.  As you can imagine, this kind of idea would only appeal to a very small percentage of the population.  Fortunately for that small percentage, this movie did get green-lit.

Matt Damon’s return to the Jason Bourne franchise was an iffy issue if Paul Greengrass wasn’t returning to direct, as well. Luckily, both announced their return last year and the cast has been filling in steadily, since then. Tommy Lee Jones and Alicia Vikander are  slated for the flick and new waves are being made today as one of the villains was announced.

The family friendly film, ‘A.R.C.H.I.E.‘ has just found the voice of their main character, the robotic dog named Archie, in the form of Michael J. Fox. Fox has got the perfect voice for a trusted friend and under-estimated hero as he proved with ‘Stuart Little‘, recently he closed the only season of ‘The Michael J. Fox‘ show when it wasn’t picked up for another season and has been a recurring character in ‘The Good Wife‘ which he will return to in the new season.

Movie Quotes

[Being told he can go home]
Private Ryan:
Hell, these guys deserve to go home as much as I do. They've fought just as hard.
Captain Miller:
Is that what I'm supposed to tell your mother when she gets another folded American flag?
Private Ryan:
You can tell her that when you found me, I was with the only brothers I had left. And that there was no way I was deserting them. I think she'd understand that.
