Why I Love Movies!

by Red Zeppelbon on Aug 31st, 2015

Hey guys, Jana here,

PicMonkey Collage

When someone in the entertainment industry dies, especially suddenly, everyone reacts differently to the news. Some people just regard it as a bit of news for the day and go on entirely unphased. Then there’s another response some can have, it’s a personal, visceral one, at that. I fall into the latter category.

Wes Craven – 1939-2015!

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

I really hate writing these, but one of my favorite directors of all time has just passed away. He wasn’t known for having the best camera shots like Kubrick, nor was he known to make big budget blockbusters like Steven Spielberg. No, he was known for scaring the absolute hell out of us over the years with his iconic horror movies. This man is known as Wes Craven.

No Escape opens in black with opening credits and the sound of insects chirping.  Suddenly we focus on two glasses of clear beverage.  The camera follows the waiter carrying the glasses through the hotel/mansion until they arrive at the security/food taster.  Upon receiving his approval the waiter continues to the Prime Minister of Thailand and his visitor.  You wonder if something is in the glasses and if the Prime Minister will meet his end.  They both drink and finish their meeting.  As the visitor is escorted out by security, suddenly alarms sound.  The security officer takes off for the Prime Minister.  He is found bloody and dead.  Rebels walk up to the security officer and he draws his blade.  To defend himself?  No, he slices his own throat.  Oh, right, this is a Weinstein film.  Cut to titles that transition into clouds and an airplane window.

Film Review: ‘Learning to Drive’!

Learning-to-Drive-Movie

Learning to Drive opens at the completion of driving instruction with Darwan Singh Tur (Sir Ben Kingsley) speaking words of wisdom and reality to his student driver.  Next we are guided through a typical day of a hardworking Indian in America.  Two jobs and a house full of relatives/friends from his village, Darwan is a stereotype of who Indians are.  I do not like stereotypes whether factual or not.  People are curvy (multi-faceted) and should not be pressed into any particular box/label.  However, in Learning to Drive, I see the Indian stereotype treated with honor and maybe even understanding.  I do not follow the Sikh religion nor do I understand it, but the worship was portrayed with reverence.

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 20th, 2015

Paul N., Here…

kahlil-gibran-the-prophet

Cartoons are often split into two categories: those for children, and those for adults. On the one hand, you have Disney classics, and on the other you have most anime. The two types have very distinct target demographics, and filmmakers gear their films to appeal to these specifics. On very rare occasion, you’ll get a film like Disney’s Fantasia that combines the two so beautifully that it appeals to both demographics. Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet, attempts this same feat with admirable gusto, falling just short of success.

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ (2D Version)!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 20th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

91+ZPgXjUCL._SL1500_

THE FILM

It’s a damn shame that every action movie can’t be as good as ‘Mad Max: Fury Road‘. So many action films will try, but will ultimately fail for a variety of reasons. Pure action filmmaking and movies just don’t get better than this movie. ‘Fury Road‘ is a troubled story to say the least. Original creator George Miller who made the original three ‘Mad Max‘ films had the idea for this fourth installment back in 1998. That’s 17-years ago. This project wasn’t necessarily put on a hold shelf, but a few things had happened to delay the film from being made. From 9-11 to foreign policy, to Mel Gibson’s infamous arrest, there were a variety of things that prevented this movie from seeing the light of day.

In a little bit of an ironic twist, The Jungle Cruise was vaguely based on a film to begin with – ‘The African Queen‘ with simulating 1930’s adventures from a British explorer’s lodge aboard a tramp steamer. From there, the waterways were open leading you through various tropical locales simulating a riverboat cruise down several major rivers of Asia, Africa and South America.

When in the world will someone get one of these right?  I can’t count the number of times I’ve been disappointed by a video game movie.  It’s a lost cause.  There’s no other way about it. The biggest victims of these green lit movies are the new directors that are given the helm.  There is some definite potential for Aleksander Bach.  He should be happy that he was able to do something with what he was given to work with.  All that can really be said is “hey, it’s better than the Hitman movie that came out in 2007.”

Film Review: ‘American Ultra’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 19th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

american-ultra-jesse-eisenberg-600x414

This late summer movie ‘American Ultra‘ mixes a good stoner comedy with high octane action with a great cast and some decent laughs throughout. You can add to that a good amount of bloody violence in the second half of things. That all being said, ‘American Ultra‘ seems to lose its steam far from the climax of the movie, and seems to just go through the motions until the end. Still, it’s a fun popcorn film to end the summer on. Director Nima Nourizadeh, whose only previous film was the found footage party movie, ‘Project X‘, leaves the handheld camera on the table here, and delivers some decent long shots of violence and action, which is a step up in his career.

Blu-ray Review: ‘The People Under The Stairs’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 13th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

THE FILM

I remember first seeing Wes Craven’sThe People Under The Stairs‘ on my television at home, when I rented it on VHS at the local video store, back when they had movie rental locations in the early 90s. I had already seen ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street‘ and knew who Craven was at that point, and I knew I had to see his new film. I instantly loved it, as it followed a kid my age in the film. I thought it was quite funny and scary all at the same time as Craven perfectly balanced the two genres here. It also did quite well in theaters, making over $31 million dollars on a $6 million dollar budget, and went on to become one of the cult classics we still love and cherish on television today.

Will Smith’s name and company, Overbrook Entertainment, has been linked to what’s been referred to as a ‘Fresh Prince of Bel-Air‘ reboot, but that’s not quite accurate. The studio is definitely involved in making a family comedy that has a slight resemblance to the series that transformed the Fresh Prince from the rapper we loved, to the on-screen entertainer that’s taken over the world.

Film Review: ‘Straight Outta Compton’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 12th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

08Suge2-articleLarge

Music biopics are one of my favorite genres of film. I love seeing a musical artist or band portrayed on screen and their rise to fame, complete with how they came up with their platinum hits, warts and all. As of lately, we haven’t seen a ton of these biopics with the exception of the excellent ‘Love & Mercy‘ about Beach Boys member Brian Wilson. Most of the biopics usually focus on one person or a band and go up until they hit it big, but that’s not the case with ‘Straight Outta Compton‘, which is more of a bio-epic than a biopic. Instead of following one person, the film follows three main characters with a treasure trove of other superstar artists.

The latest Hollywood remake to hit theaters is the hit tv show from the mid-60’s ‘The Man From U.N.C.L.E.‘, which lasted four seasons and was partially developed by Ian Fleming just as the James Bond franchise was taking off. If you were alive during the mid-60s, you would have known that this ‘U.N.C.L.E.‘ television series was one of the best things on tv at the time, as it centered on an American spy and a Russian spy, working together to take out the bad guys in a very 007 kind of way.

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

The Diary of A Teenage Girl‘ sounds like it’s a bubble gum pop movie with the latest MTV stars, void of any real emotion or reality, complete with the worst of music today. Fortunately for everyone involved, that’s not the case here with Marielle Heller’s great film, ‘The Diary of A Teenage Girl‘. This indie movie is just full of surprises as we get a graphic glimpse inside the life of one high-schooler’s sexual encounters over the course of about a year. Based on Phoebe Gloeckner’s graphic novel and set in 1970’s San Francisco, the first moment of the film has our main character Minnie (Bel Powley) narrate to us that she just had sex for the first time as she’s walking through the park.

Ten Great Lesser-Known Films Starring Big Name Actors!!

You might find yourself reading the following list, thinking “Hey! I’ve seen all these movies! How dare you claim them to be ‘lesser-known’!” My response to you, should you say such a thing, is “congratulations.” You see, just because you are a film nut like me, doesn’t mean that the rest of the populace is. The following is a list of ten good films with big-named actors that somehow slipped under the general radar. I’m not saying they are completely unknown, but based upon ticket sales, it certainly seems like they slipped the notice of the general public. These are all solid films that, should you enjoy these actors, you definitely want to check them out (the films, not the actors – although to each their own, I guess).

Film Review: ‘Do I Sound Gay?’!!

You’ve read the title of this film and its review, so go ahead, get your snickering and jokes out of the way now; I’ll wait. Feeling better? Good. Now we can begin a serious discussion. The idea that a specific style of speech is exclusive to homosexual males is an interesting one that deserves at least a glimpse.

Writer-director-star, David Thorpe crafts a “personal documentary” style film in an attempt to answer the mystery behind the gay male voice. Pulling primarily from his own personal experiences, he weaves together personal anecdotes, historical references, and numerous testimonials with the grace and skill of a much more seasoned filmmaker; especially when one considers that this is his cinematic debut.

Film Review: ‘Fantastic Four’!

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

Fantastic Four‘ has always been a fun comic book. Ever since the early 60s, these four heroes have entertained us in each crime fighting, earth saving, and alien destroying issue. With Reed Richards, Johnny and Sue Storm, and Ben Grimm, there was nothing that these four couldn’t handle. One of my favorite story arcs was from the mid-2000’s where Ultimate Fantastic Four had to deal with zombies. It was an excellent storyline, one that I wish will be told on the big screen at some point. Speaking of the big screen, the Fantastic Four have never seen a good adaptation.

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

We’ve all come to know that Meryl Streep is one of the greatest actresses in the world. With each role she plays, she fully immerses herself into her character, which usually leads to Oscar nominations and wins. There almost isn’t a year that goes by where Streep isn’t nominated for something, and truth be told, she usually deserves it. Over the years, we’ve seen Streep play many roles, most of which are dramatic performances with a few comedic and musical roles thrown in for good measure. Hell, she even played a witch in ‘Into the Woods‘, but we’ve never seen Streep like this before in Jonathan Demme’sRicki and the Flash‘.

THE SERIES

It’s hard to believe this little gem of a show has now had seven full seasons. Creators Seth Green and Matthew Senreich have molded a stop motion show of action figures into a cult phenomenon that is one of Adult Swim’s biggest series. If you’re unfamiliar with the series, each episode is less than 15 minutes in length and is a series of very short comedy skits, all using stop motion with action figures. The catch is that it’s definitely geared towards adults, since the comedy is very R rated.
